GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Politics boring? But you’re the star! By Jomquan Loapet Nation Channel news anchor

wish everybody would stop saying they are bored of politics and start following political news in a more insightful way. Instead of being irritated and disgusted, try looking at it in a more optimistic light. It’s less about who wins than about understanding the struggle for power. Right now, the division between conservatives, progressives and liberals is the seed for more conflict – history repeating itself. But democratic politics is only a reflection of the public’s choices. The future is in no one else’s hands but our own. We decide who enters politics.

New tourist attraction Surin Provincial Administration Organisation president Thongchai Mungcharoenporn said the centre, known as the Elephant Kingdom, would enable mahouts with their elephants to earn up to Bt10,000 a month and should be selfsupporting after five years. Mahouts will be put to work on reforestation and growing crops for elephant feed while also helping to promote mahout wisdom and knowledge of elephant-related rituals. Elephants could give rides to tourists or perform in shows. With as many as 200 elephants gathered in one place, the centre has the potential to become a major tourist attraction, said Thongchai. The project was launched to protect the creatures from road accidents after HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn expressed concerns about the problem of elephants roaming Bangkok and surrounding built-up areas. The Royal Forestry Department has donated a 7,500-rai plot in the Dong Sai Thong and Phu Din forestlands of Surin’s Tha Thum district as a centre for elephant conservation and mahout wisdom, which the government would fund at Bt22 million a year for five years, said Suwit.

BOILING POINT Demonstrators from all over Asia converge on the international Climate Change Talks in Bangkok D A I LY X P R E S S

T

hai and Bangladeshi farmers, a Nepalese mountaineer, a Filipino fisherman and an Indonesian women’s rights advocate are among more than 2,000 people demanding their voices be heard at the Bangkok Climate Change Talks, which end on Friday. The talks are the penultimate negotiating session before December’s conference in Copenhagen where an ambitious international climate change deal will be agreed. “We are here to show Asians’ power in the negotiations. We want to tell them [negotiators]

that our concerns must be part of the deal,” said Khingkhon Narinthornkul, coordinator for the Thai Working Group on Climate Justice. More than 2,000 people marched yesterday from Santi Chai Prakarn park to the United Nations building in Bangkok, where 4,000 delegates from around the world are meeting to discuss solutions to the effects of climate change.

Direct action The marchers carried banners reading “Cool world not for sale” and “We don’t want

your carbon credit, we want your responsibility”. “All of us agree that there is no hope of resolving the problems if things are left to the negotiators and the UN. That’s why we were here,” said Khingkhon. “We need to scream and shout so that negotiators know we are watching what they are doing,” she added. Demonstrators will put a human face on the issue of climate change today when they put developed countries on trial in a mock court hearing.

Developed nations on trial The court, in session from 9am to 1pm at Prince Palace Hotel, will examine the culpability of developed countries for global warming and claim damages for the hardships in-

flicted on the people of Asia. Thai rice farmer Thongsa Juansang will speak about the hotter and drier weather this year which was followed by intense rainfall that is now threatening her crops.

Personal testimony Nepalese mountaineer Dawa Steven Sherpa will share his experiences of the dramatic and unusual collapse of a part of the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest, and Bangladesh’s Shorbanu Khatun, a survivor of Cyclone Aila, will tell of rising seawater destroying crops and livelihoods. Filipino Elvira Matias Baladad will give testimony of how the erratic weather has shattered his lifelong dream of being a successful fruit orchard owner.

Police probe mid-air scuffle Indian police are probing an alleged mid-air scuffle between pilots and crew of an Air India flight while it was cruising over Pakistan en route to Delhi from Sharjah. Delhi police said a flight attendant, who had been onboard the flight, lodged a complaint that she had been hurt and molested by a pilot and the case was being investigated. An altercation between the pilots of the aircraft and two cabin crew members – one female and the other male – began on the ground in Sharjah before flight IC-884 took off on Saturday. Verbal exchanges allegedly developed into a full-blown fight after the aircraft took off, the report said citing unnamed sources. “Blows were exchanged and abuse hurled between pilots and crew mid-air, with bewildered passengers looking on,” The Times of India reported. The incident took place right outside the cockpit and violated all safety norms as the aircraft flew at over 9,500 metres with 160 passengers on board, the report added. The pilots have accused the male cabin crew of misbehaving and compromising safety. – D P A

An Indian man launched a legal challenge to halt the sale of US$28,000 (Bt950,000) pens engraved with the image of Mahatma Gandhi, saying they were an insult to the independence leader. Germany-based Montblanc unveiled the limited-edition fountain pens, which are plated with white gold and rhodium, in Mumbai last week to mark the 140th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth. Dijo Kapen, from the Centre of Consumer Education in the southern city of Kottayam, filed a petition in Kerala’s high court challenging Montblanc’s right to market the pens. Kapen said the idea was an inappropriate tribute to a man who renounced material possessions, and he cited a law that prohibits the use of Gandhi’s image for business purposes without the permission of the government. But Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi said Gandhi’s image had long been put to commercial use and that Montblanc wished to pay homage the iconic peace campaigner. Only 241 of the pens will be up for sale. – AFP

66-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus Rex named Samson failed to sell at a Las Vegas auction on Saturday after the top bid of $3.6 million (Bt120.5 million) fell way below the minimum price. Samson, a female T-Rex found on a South Dakota ranch in 1992, also trailed the record $8.36 million that Sue, another T-Rex, sold for at a 1997 auction. So what about a child snatched by a stranger? About 800,000 children are reported missing in the US each year. The vast majority are runaways, followed by parental abductions, said Ernie Allen, president of the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. About 58,000 children are kidnapped by strangers. Then there are the approximately 115 children a year like Jaycee Dugard, who are snatched then murdered, ransomed or kept for several years. There are technological tools that give parents some peace of mind, from clip-on alarms to GPS locators that can be dropped in a backpack or stuffed in a teddy bear, but experts caution that the gadgets are not without their limitations and can even raise safety concerns of their own. Myths about successful child-tracking items include implantable GPS-enabled microchips, but industry experts say they do not exist on the market. rue Fantasia and Work Point Entertainment, better known for TV work than theatre, have together produced a stage musical with pricey tickets – Bt3,500 for the best seats. For another Bt500 you could see “Mamma Mia!” “The Legend of Re Khai Fun: Chaliang the Musical” clocks Mint, centre, excels in singing and acting while Nat, left and Bow tended to drop out of character when singing.

in at three and a half hours, and there’s a 20-minute intermission too. True Fantasia seems to have realised that not everyone from the cast of “Academy Fantasia” is made for a musical and has selected only those who can sing, act and fit a character. Work Point, however, is sticking to its old student-comedy format. This is a “jukebox musical” – the songs are all well-known

hits. Success lies in how the songs are reinterpreted and laced into a plausible dramatic story. Unfortunately, success proves elusive in this show, which suffers from too many unnecessary gags and superfluous songs, the story line struggling to connect to Chaliang’s lyrics, which in turn refuse to goose the script along.

Breathtaking Mint The cast is a mixed bag. The most outstanding performer is Mint AF3, who excels in both singing and acting, fuelled by sheer energy and charm, a spotless musical-theatre star. With the hero’s charisma, Boy AF2 shows why he’s the most successful actor from the TV reality series. And Tol AF4 shows he’s a true villain with

exemplary subtlety and sincerity. There is credible acting from Lukpong AF4, Nat AF4 and Bow AF5, but when the music starts, they think they’re putting on a concert, so they drop their dramatic characters. Tee AF4 is never convincing in his role as a father, but veteran actors Suprawat Pattamasoot, Yanee Tramote and Pawanrat Naksuriya are all delights and solidify the overall performance. “Re Khai Fun” is entertaining, sporadically, but you’re better off enjoying Chaliang’s music by simply listening to the CDs – or seeing them onstage in person. The finalists in the Thailand Open on Sunday weren’t exactly household names, so who really cared whether Frenchman Gilles Simon or Serbian Viktor Troicki won? Those ubiquitous drumbanging, costumed cheerleaders were there to call out, “Who’s cheering for Viktor?” and “Who’s cheering for Simon?” The roar was equal for both players, so they tried, “Who’s cheering for Abhisit?” The response for the prime minister, on hand to present the winner’s trophy, was quite deafening, if that’s any kind of a poll to go by.

12.2-megapixel camera designed with the traveller in mind, the Samsung ST1000 comes with built-in GPS and wireless network capabilities. Turn the GPS on and the camera conveniently displays your current location on its screen. Press the shutter button, and it geo-tags the shot by recording latitude and longitude. The location data is automatically embedded into each image’s EXIF file and the geo-tag data can be utilised on social media photo-sharing websites like Google Earth, Google Maps and Flickr to pinpoint where on the globe it was taken. The camera also comes with iStudio software that can automatically load the Google Map and pinpoint the location of the shoot with just a few mouse clicks.

When I clicked on a shot taken on my home soi, for example, the picture was displayed on the Google Map along with soi name, city and country. The built-in Wi-Fi adapter makes it very convenient to upload photos or videos from the camera directly to Facebook, Picasa and YouTube or even Samsung’s own website (www.SamsungImaging.com). Key in user name and password and you connect the camera to a hotspot or your home wireless router. Once connected, photos can also be sent via email. What’s more, the built-in Wi-Fi feature allows you to display the photos on hi-definition LCD or Plasma TVs that support the Digital Living Network Alliance. Sony’s PlayStation Portable is the highest-powered handheld video-game machine on the market, but it’s usually my third choice when it comes to on-the-road action. It’s all a matter of size. Apple’s iPhone, which has become a solid casual-gaming platform, slides easily into a trouser pocket. Nintendo’s DS fits a little more snugly. But even the slimmest version of the old PSP is still too bulky to carry on everyday errands. The newest model of Sony’s handheld, the PSP Go, is less demanding. It’s just a little bigger than an iPhone. Sony has accomplished this feat with a number of tricks. The video screen is slightly smaller diagonally, though it has the same wide-screen ratio and looks as sharp as ever. The controls that were once

on the sides of the screen are now on a panel that slides out from under the screen. Most significantly, there’s no longer a slot or a drive for the Universal Media Discs that contain PSP games and videos. There’s no longer a need to carry a UMD for each game. Instead, all your media can be stored on the PSP Go’s 16-gigabyte hard drive or on a tiny memory stick. That also means no more trips to the game store. Instead, you have to download software from Sony’s PlayStation Store – a process that shouldn’t be too alien now that Apple has trained everyone to download media AFP

through iTunes. Sony says there are more than 225 games available, as well as 2,300 movies and 13,300 TV episodes. The game library runs the gamut from elegant puzzlers like Echochrome to elaborate role-playing dramas like Jeanne d’Arc. There are PSP originals like Patapon 2 and remakes of PlayStation 1 classics like Metal Gear Solid. And there will be a whole section of PSP Minis, inexpensive casual games like PacMan and Tetris that are meant to compete with the offering in Apple’s App Store. Sony is delivering two fullfeatured racing games to coincide with the PSP Go’s launch. Gran Turismo is the showstopper, de-

livering the wealth of realistic cars and racetracks we’ve come to expect from the series. It’s missing some features from its home console brethren – most notably, a career mode – but it looks and feels wonderful. MotorStorm: Arctic Edge is less ambitious, although its renderings of snow-packed off-road courses are eyecatching. It’s more of an arcade racer, so you have nitroboosted engines, ridiculous jumps and the ability to keep racing after crashes that should be debilitating. It’s reckless, fast-paced fun. If you already own a PSP,

you’ll want to hold onto it, because there’s no way to transfer your UMD-based games to the PSP Go. That and the hefty price tag are the two biggest drawbacks to the new device. However I won’t miss the noisy, sometimes sluggish UMD drive, and I like the evolution into a download-only device. It feels sturdier than its predecessors, without the wiggly controls of older PSPs. And its compact size makes the PSP go, at long last, a worthwhile travel companion. On the Net: http://bit.ly/7kOS1

Today’s Birthday: It’s time to get your ducks in a row financially, emotionally and physically. Start with your home and personal life and follow through by making the self-improvements that will boost your confidence. Set your budget, life and goals to suit your needs instead of trying to please everyone around you.

Yesterday’s Puzzle Answer Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.

ARIES *** March 21-April 19 Your emphasis should be on work and getting along with the people you do business with. A challenge will suddenly appear and a fast reaction will be necessary to avoid trouble later. TAURUS *** April 20-May 20 Strive for perfection and productivity. Work from home if it will help you accomplish more and open your doors to the people who can offer you the most assistance. Romance is looking good. GEMINI *** May 21-June 20 You may have some great ideas but trying to get others to buy into your plans will not be easy. Don’t waste time getting others on board — develop your ideas and present them as your own.

DIFFICULTY RATING ★★

A romantic situation can help turn your life around. LEO ** July 23-Aug. 22 Do what you can for others. As soon as you become too me-oriented, someone will point out your faults. A trip will pay off as long as you don’t go overboard. A past partnership will come in handy.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY

A change at work may be sudden and unexpected but necessary. Don’t get emotional. SCORPIO *** Oct. 23-Nov. 21 A change in a relationship will pleasantly surprise you. Don’t lose sight of your budget when making upgrades to your home or electronic equipment. A trip will be educational and rewarding. SAGITTARIUS *** Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Prepare to give your job all you’ve got. One slip and you will fall through the cracks and miss out on an opportunity. This is not the time to rely on others to pull things together. CAPRICORN ***** Dec. 22-Jan. 19 Personal and domestic changes will confirm what you had already anticipated. Act swiftly and with confidence and you can complete all the plans and projects you have on your to-do list. Elisabeth Shue

Referee Craig Thomson admits he should have given Celtic a second penalty in the defeat by Scottish rivals Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday. With Rangers one up from a Kenny Miller goal, Thomson spurned calls for a penalty in the 12th minute when Shaun Maloney went down under a tackle from skipper Davie Weir. Thomson admitted his error through the Scottish Football Association’s head of referee development, Hugh Dallas. “Craig is disappointed at his error of judgement when he decided against awarding a penalty in the 12th minute. I think that it says a lot for the character and professionalism of Craig that he has been more than willing to hold his hands up on this one.” – AFP

arren Sharper returned one of his two interceptions 99 yards for a touchdown to spark New Orleans past the New York Jets 24-10 on Sunday in a matchup of American football unbeatens. Sharper, a 12-year veteran whose 59 career pick-offs are the most of among active National Football League player, has five interceptions and two touchdowns this season as the Saints are off to their best start since 1993. “Defence did a great job. They set us up with great field position all day,” Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. The Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos matched the Saints in improving to 4-0. The Broncos achieved their best start in six seasons with a 17-10 victory over Dallas while the Colts defeated Seattle 34-17. Also staying unbeaten were the Saints’ next foes, the New York Giants, who ripped winless

Kansas City 27-16. Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes but suffered a bruised right heel in guiding the Giants to victory. The Saints have a bye week next week while the Giants face struggling Oakland before what could be another showdown of unbeatens in two weeks. “We expect them to come in undefeated,” Brees said. “It figures to be another big matchup.” New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez completed 14-of-27 passes for 138 yards but was sacked four times and committed four turnovers, including a pickoff by Randall Gay in the final minutes to seal the Saints’ victory. “My mistakes killed us,” Sanchez said. “The defence played well enough to win. That whole game is 10-10 without three interceptions and a fumble.” The Saints’ league-leading attack managed only three points in the first three quarters but dominated with defence, Sharper’s pickoff runback from the Saints’ 1-yard line in the second quarter turning momentum for good. “When I caught it, I kind of stopped and just started

running real slow because I wanted to see what was around me,” Sharper said. “Then I said, ‘Why don’t I turn on the speed a little bit to show people I can still run.’” Defensive end Will Smith sacked Sanchez in the end zone and forced a fumble that Remi Ayodele recovered for a touchdown to give New Orleans a 17-0 lead. Denver’s Brandon Marshall evaded six Dallas defenders to complete a 51-yard touchdown reception 1:46 remaining and Champ Bailey batted away a last-second 2-yard touchdown pass attempt from Tony Romo to Sam Hurd for Denver’s victory. Peyton Manning completed 31-of-41 passes for 353 yards and two touchdowns, matching Fran Tarkenton for third on the alltime TD pass list with 342, to spark the Indianapolis triumph. “We played greatness,” Seattle coach Jim Mora said. “He’s one of the finest of all time.” Manning’s brother Eli of the Giants said he expects to be back in the line-up next week despite his heel injury.

Juve are just awful but still on top in Italy

GALACTICOS CRASH Sevilla put an end to talk of two-horse race in Spain DPA, Madrid

evilla are the toast of Spanish football yesterday, with the country’s media full of praise for their 2-1 defeat of Real Madrid on Sunday. Manolo Jimenez’s team are praised not just because of the style of their victory – they tore into Real from the first minute and deserved to win by more goals – but because of its significance. The memorable win means that La Liga will not be another two-horse race between Real and Barcelona – at least for the time being. Only once in the past five seasons have Real and Barca not finished as the top two teams. Last season Sevilla finished eight points behind secondplaced Real. Now Sevilla share second place with Real, with 15 points from six games, both of them three points behind leaders Barca. Sevilla lost their first match of the season 2-0 away to Valencia and it seemed that – with Real and Barca both winning their first five matches for the first time ever – that another two-horse race was on the cards. However, Sevilla have put together a five-match winning run, thanks to a solid defence in front of veteran keeper Andres Palop – and thanks to a lively attack led by Luis Fabiano. “We played really well and are on a roll at the moment,” said Fabiano. “If we continue playing like that we can compete with Real and Barca at the top.” Sevilla won the Uefa Cup in

Sevilla’s Jesus Navas, centre, celebrates with team-mates after scoring against Real Madrid. 2006 and 2007, plus the Spanish King’s Cup in 2007. However, they lost their sparkle in the last two seasons, partly because of the heart-attack death of young left-back Antonio Puerta and partly because of the defection of coach Juande Ramos to Tottenham. Their defeat of Real, the most expensive side in history, is front-page news in most Spanish newspapers yesterday. According to Madrid sports daily Marca, “Sevilla is the alternative to the big two,” while rival daily AS praises the Seville side for their “rebellion”. “We knew we would lose at some stage,” said Real midfielder Kaka. “We were beaten by a good team and we need to im-

WE WERE BEATEN BY A GOOD TEAM AND WE NEED TO IMPROVE SOME THINGS. Kaka, Real Madrid prove some things. “It was an intense game in which we created chances but we made mistakes from setpieces and got punished.”

Catalan daily Sport claims that Sevilla “are better equipped than last season to keep up” with the twin giants, despite having spent only a fraction on new players this summer than the big two did. Catalan channel TV-3 pointed out that Sevilla “have a stronger squad” than last season, despite having spent little in the transfer market. They single out Monchi, the club’s sporting director, for having put together “an excellent squad, at a reasonable price”. The Sevilla players who receive most praise in yesterday’s papers are goalscorers Jesus Navas and Renato, plus midfielder Didier Zokora and defender Ivica Dragutinovic.

A sound 2-0 beating away to Palermo late Sunday was a worrisome eye-opener for Juventus fans who must have asked themselves how their team can sit just two points from the Serie A top after seven games. Newspaper headlines yesterday ranged from La Gazzetta dello Sport’s “Juve sink in Palermo” to “The autumn of Juventus,” in la Repubblica, and peaked with Turin’s daily La Stampa titling “Nothing at all worked – This time Ciro is unforgivable.” Coach Ciro Ferrara suffered his first defeat since taking over last May and did it in the worst possible way as Palermo walked over Juve in a game that, as defender Giorgio Chiellini said, “could have ended up 4-0 and there would have been nothing to say”. Ferrara, a former international defender with Juve, was ruthless in his analysis, saying that “nothing worked, both from a physical and tactical point of view. “Tonight [Sunday], a great game was played only by Palermo, who had many strengths, but we did nothing against them.” Chiellini and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon were the only Juve players to put in decent performances while Mauro Camoranesi and Brazilian Felipe Melo appeared played farther below standard. Palermo’s first goal owed much to Melo’s poor control in midfield, while Camoranesi, a seasoned offensive playmaker lost too much possession. D PA

AC Milan’s Ronaldinho scores against Atalanta.

C Milan coach Leonardo was literally left speechless by his team’s dire 1-1 draw at 10-man Atalanta on Sunday. Having screamed and shouted at his struggling side from the touchline, he lost his voice, leaving assistant Mauro Tassotti to face the post-match media inquisition. Had Brazilian Leonardo faced the press he would have

had to fend off uncomfortable questions about his team’s deficiencies for the fourth match in a row. The statistics make sorry reading. In their last four matches in Europe and at home they have drawn twice and lost twice, scoring just one goal – that was on Sunday against 10-man Atalanta. The former European champions have only two wins in

seven league matches and one solitary goal at home. And this is a team with the likes of Pato, Ronaldinho, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Filippo Inzaghi and Marco Borriello, not to mention the creative elements of Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf. Against Atalanta, Milan fell behind after some defensive uncertainty allowed Simone Tiribocchi to open the scoring

midway through the first half. But despite substitute Ronaldinho saving the day for the seven-time European champions, centre-back Alessandro Nesta, who provided the defence-splitting pass, was scathing after the game. “Have we bounced back? This was a game we had to win. They had 10 men, we have to be humble and understand that,” he said.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka scores the team’s first goal past Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina. Rafael Benitez refused to write off Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League this season despite watching his side fall six points behind leaders Chelsea after a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda condemned the Reds to their third defeat of the season and left them languishing in fifth place. Three league losses is one more than Liverpool suffered over the whole of last season and Benitez’s team looked anything but championship quality on Sunday as Chelsea overpowered them in the second half. However, Benitez is staying upbeat about their title prospects. “Our target now has to be the next game. Every game is important. We have to

keep calm and working hard,” he said. “This year the top sides will lose games but you have to try to improve and we will try to win against Sunderland next. When the teams at the top of the table drop points and you win, it is better, but we have to keep winning games and stay as strong as possible and see what happens. “It is my opinion you will see top sides losing more games this season. It is good for the Premier League and it means we have to keep calm. “We drew a lot of games last season too, we will now try to win and if we have more wins than draws, we could end with the same amount of points.” Carlo Ancelotti’s side have now opened up a two-

point gap over Manchester United. But perhaps more importantly, it restored the Blues to winning ways in emphatic fashion. Ancelotti said: “It was an important win. It was a difficult match. I don’t know if it was a better performance than in the Champions League against APOEL Nicosia. The Italian added: “Manchester United’s result was a surprise for sure, but this season is about us because we are top of the league.” Despite the defeat Benitez said he had few complaints about the performance of his players and admitted they could simply not find a way past the Chelsea defence. “The performance was not bad. We were playing a very good team in Chelsea.
