n the wake of the recent murder of a woman in a remote area in Bangkok, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday ordered district offices to tidy abandoned, overgrown plots to reduce the risk of them being used by criminals to prey on their victims.

Owners of the plots will initially be asked to either rid them of high grass and bushes or prevent access by building fences. If they miss the deadline, they will be asked to pay for city gardeners to complete the job, Sukhumbhand said. The tax burden would be increased for any uncooperative owners.

Overgrown plots that are left abandoned for 10 years would be repossessed by the state.

“However, this will be a measure of last resort,” said Sukhumbhand.

An initial report shows that 145 bus stops in 40 outlying Bangkok districts have abandoned and overgrown plots of land nearby. The capital’s remaining 10 districts cover downtown or urban areas and have no such risk areas.

Other measures to bring greater security to the city’s streets include installing another 3,000 CCTV cameras this year.

Lighting is also being improved.

Survey of Bangkok residents finds that traditional beliefs are changing fast

o show how belief in traditional proverbs reflects changes in modern Thai lifestyles, Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU) is asking Bangkok residents whether 15 old adages still prove true to their lives.

“This is the seventh time we have conducted the survey,” DPU senior researcher Dr Apichai Apichartbutra said yesterday. Under the latest round, 1,118 people were questioned late last month.

Faith in seniors falls “The findings show that Bangkok residents now believe less in the saying ‘Follow in an

adult’s footsteps and you won’t get hurt’,” Apichai said. The “belief index” dropped from 98.64 to 95.10 points (100 points is a measure of the historically normal level of beliefs, explained DPU research centre head Sorachai Bhisalbutra.)

Apichai said the results indicate that city dwellers these days have more faith in themselves than in their seniors.

“Young people today are quicker decision-makers,” he concluded.

For the adage “Save your satangs till you get one baht”, the belief index dropped from 99.02 to 95.99, suggesting that the capital’s citizens were less worried about saving their money.

Gamblers’ favourite adage Other proverbs, however, scored higher than 100 points, reflecting a continuing fierce belief in their truth.

One such was “You can compete in a boat race, but not in luck”, the belief index for which soared from 96.64 to 106.83 points.

“This suggests that Bangkok residents prefer to wait for a lucky break rather than rely on hard work to build a better life for themselves,” Apichai said.

“It seems that many people have less confidence in proverbs with an ethical focus,” he concluded.

Sorachai said the belief indexes reflected public sentiment at different junctures in the country’s history.

“We are conducting the survey once every three months,” he added.

wiss authorities said on Monday they expect to rule this week on a bail request by Roman Polanski as he fights US extradition on child sex charges, with Hollywood’s finest demanding his release.

The 76-year-old Oscar-winning director is facing a lengthy legal battle to avoid justice in the United States in connection with a 1977 sex case involving a 13-year-old girl after he was arrested on an international warrant in Zurich 10 days ago.

Polanski’s lawyers have said they lodged two requests for his release. “We will learn during the week of the decision by the Federal Justice Office,” office spokesman Folco Galli said, although bail is rarely granted in extradition cases.

The danger for the Maldives is so acute that Nasheed has raised the possibility of buying a new “homeland” in Australia, India or Sri Lanka for the nation’s 330,000 citizens.

A

lternative-rock pioneers Moderndog blew out their 15 birthday candles with a party last Friday at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium surrounded by friends and more than 2,000 faithful fans who happily chorused “Happy Birthday” in front of the special cake. It was, for the most part, a good bash, though some fans were a little disappointed with the two-and-ahalf-hour show, which was packed with lots of guests, a boring magic show and lots of costume changes but not enough music.

Unlike their 10th-anniversary gig – a solid rock concert at the same venue – the “5 3 15” concert was designed to look back over the decade and a half since the lads made their debut on the music scene. Nearly 30

songs from five albums were newly arranged especially for the show, with some tunes sung by friends who’ve been working with the band since Moderndog formed in 1994.

After a hour’s wait, fans applauded as vocalist Thanachai “Pod” Ujjin, guitarist May-T Noijinda and drummer Pawin “Pong” Suwannacheep and bass player Somat “Bob” Bunyarattavej, who started with the band but quit after they’d recorded their second album, made their way on stage and performed the rearranged “Loi Maa Loi Pai” and “Chewit” from the debut album “Moderndog”.

They were then joined by Sukie Kamolsukosol Clapp, formerly of Bakery and the band’s first producer, who jammed on keyboards on “Bangsing” before playing

“Happy Birthday”. Sukie then switched to guitar for “Durian” and the stage went dark.

Then it was the turn of Apartment Khunpa’s bassist Pookan “Mai” Sansuriya, who jammed on “Niyai” and “Wan Sudtai”.

Jump around After a costume change, the

band came back in orange jumpsuits for “Roob Mai Lor” (“I’m Not Handsome”) with guest DJs Dome Pakornlum and Jay Monthon each spinning turntables.

Michael Tang, aka Thailand’s Micheal Jackson, was featured on “Tim”, dancing with Pod. The band played their breakout hit “Bussaba” before wrapping up with Palmy on drums for “Saneha” (“Desire”).

But the fans were not going to let the Dog go home without an encore. As cheers grew later, the band came back and ended the party with “Korn” and a medley that blended “Vatal” “Animal” and “That Song”.

he launch of Madonna’s compilation album “Celebration” took Siam Square by storm last week with a “dance mob” numbering more than 2,000 packing into Siam Paragon’s Parc Paragon.

“We came up with the mob idea and presented it to the record label first, but it seems Japanese fans came up with up with a similar concept and organised their mob first,” says one of the local leaders.

In Japan, 150,000 fans formed a flash mob and danced in unison to the singer’s hits at Shinjuku, according to one dancer, whose interview is posted on YouTube.

Alex Ferguson has been branded a “bully” over his latest verbal onslaught on a referee and warned that Manchester United could face a backlash from outraged match officials.

Ferguson’s comments have caused outrage among leading English referees.

That fury was articulated by Jeff Winter, now retired but until recently one of England’s top match officials, who said he would not be surprised if Wiley decided to sue the United boss over the damage he had caused to his reputation. “It was a cowardly attack - Sir Alex wouldn’t have said it to Alan Wiley’s face,” Winter told the Guardian.

“Every game Alan Wiley takes charge of now where he makes a decision which upsets some fans is going to result in chants of ‘You’re not fit to referee’, he’s going to be known as the ‘unfit ref’.

“Sir Alex won’t care though.

He’s a knight of the realm and he thinks he’s untouchable, bullet proof.

innesota quarterback Brett Favre threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns yesterday against the club where he was a star for 16 years, giving the Vikings a 30-23 victory over Green Bay. Favre, who turns 40 next week, was a winner in his first meeting against his former club in a much-anticipated National Football League showdown centered around the all-time NFL pass leader facing down his former team-mates.

“It’s sweet but it has nothing to do with revenge,” Favre said.

“I’m emotional but I’m always emotional. I knew there was a lot riding on the game. This one carried a little more weight.

“One game does not define my career. I wasn’t out to prove anything. I was out here to play.

It was a lot of fun.”

Favre, who completed 24-of312 passes without an interception, became the first quarterback in NFL history to defeat

every team in the league.

“I guess you’ve got to be remembered for something,” Favre said.

The Vikings improved to 4-0 to make this the first season in NFL history with five clubs at that mark, the others being the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos. Green Bay fell to 2-2.

“That was a big win for us,” Favre said. “We threw the ball better than I thought we would.”

Favre threw his third touchdown pass of the game just 4:20 into the second half, connecting with Bernard Berrian on a 31yard touchdown play that put the Vikings ahead 28-14.

Green Bay answered with a 14-play march to the Vikings 1yard line but a dropped pass in the end zone on fourth down killed the drive and swung momentum Minnesota’s way.

Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen tackled Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter that lifted the Vikings’ lead to 30-14.

Rodgers, the Packers’ replacement for Favre, suffered his sev-

enth of eight sacks of the game – five by Allen – and 19th of the season on the play, which came with 7:21 remaining.

Rodgers responded by driving the Vikings 96 yards on six plays in just 79 seconds on their next possession, capping the march with a 33-yard touchdown pass play to Jordy Nelson with 3:40 remaining.

But a hurried 2-point conversion pass attempt fell incomplete, leaving the Packers down 30-20 and needing two scoring plays rather than one to pull even.

Green Bay pulled within 30-23 on a 31-yard field goal by Mason Crosby with 55 seconds remaining, but Crosby’s onside kick attempt failed when Minnesota’s Sidney Rice grabbed the ball and the Vikings ran out the final seconds.

Rodgers finished with a career-high 376 passing yards and earned praise from the man whose job he took, the NFL’s alltime passing leader.

“We will be meeting with them on October 13 as we feel the team deliberately lost the games against Australia and New Zealand,” Jamshed Dasti, chairman Standing Committee on Sports in the Pakistan Lower House, said yesterday.

Pakistan were defeated by Australia in the last group match last week before losing to New Zealand in the semifinal. “They lost to Australia just to keep India out of the tournament,” Dasti said.

Australia might not have qualified for the semi-final had Pakistan won against the defending champions and India could have advanced had they defeated West Indies by a big margin.

“There are lots of doubts on the performance of the team and we feel it has to be cleared by the PCB officials and the team management,” Dasti said. “The way we lost in the semi-final, it has left the whole nation disappointed and the PCB has to give answers.”

Piquet, though, told Brazilian media that he felt he was the main loser in the affair. “I did the sport a service but have ended up the victim,” Piquet, sacked by Renault in July, told O Globo television in an interview broadcast on Sunday night. “I made a mistake in accepting

what they asked me to do in that situation.”

But he insisted: “I was the most affected by this business.

o-owner George Gillett has urged Liverpool fans to blame manager Rafael Benitez for on-field failings and insisted more money has been pumped in to the team than into rival outfits.

“We have invested more money than our competitors in keeping with the history of the club,” the American businessman said.

“In the last 18 months we have invested £128 million on top of what has come in. That means it should be getting better.

“Now if it’s not getting better, it’s not Gillett and [co-owner Tom] Hicks, it’s the manager, it’s the scouting,” the newspaper quoted Hicks as telling a fan meeting at the club’s Kirkby academy last week.

With Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Cup play-offs,

another loan deal with AC Milan expected to follow and a fourth World Cup on the horizon, David Beckham’s future appears rosy, even at age 34.

By helping the Galaxy reach the play-offs for the first time in four years, he has won over many of the critics who turned on him when he went on loan to Milan the first time.

By returning to the Italian club for another spell he will keep England coach Fabio Capello happy that he is playing in a higher standard of football as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa nears.

By saying he might then return to the Galaxy after the World Cup, it shows he means to honour his five-year contract in the MLS. If it all works out, Beckham could go to Milan as a championship winner in the MLS, turn around the Italian’s club’s dismal season, and then help England win its first title since the 1966 World Cup. More likely, this could be David Beckham the diplomat, keeping everyone sweet in the knowledge that his playing career is surely coming to an end in two years or so.

“I’ll finish when I feel my legs can’t take any more, then I’ll start enjoying family life,” he said on Sunday. “I want to play as long as possible. I have two years left on the Galaxy contract and then, who knows?”

More immediately, Beckham is putting on his England shirt, flying into the country from Los Angeles ahead of two more World Cup qualifying games against Ukraine on Saturday and Belarus the following Wednesday.

If there is a down side to Beckham’s world right now, it’s the fact that he must now realise that the days of him being a regular starter for England are long gone.

Right now he would probably walk into the starting line-up at Milan.

Beckham is expected to return to San Siro once his season is over with the Galaxy and Milan’s current poor form suggests the Serie A club needs him. If he moves to Milan for his second spell, Beckham will probably stay there until the end of the season and then comes the build-up to the World Cup. That return would be in late 2010 with Beckham then dragging 35-year-old legs around the football field without much of a break – MLS to Serie A to the World Cup in South Africa and back to the US It’s a globe-trotting career Beckham never expected when he began his career as a 17-year-old with Manchester United, never expecting to leave Old Trafford.

Now in his mid-30s, his goal is keeping three teams happy at the same time.
