GOOD MORNING BANGKOK!

Tackle the problem of traffic jams By Tossaporn Wongwaikolayoot Nation Channel reporter

think the government should solve the traffic-jam problem by integrating the city with rural areas. The money that is used to develop the BTS or MRT or construct new roads should instead be used for hospitals, schools and other facilities. And MPs should pay attention to rural development in a more serious way and not just when it’s time for an election.

case involving the alleged A theft of three rare Khorat big-mouthed frogs from the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station will be heard today at Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Court. Station director Thaksin Achawakhom said the new frog species was discovered last year by an expedition from the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research accompanied by American amphibian specialist David McLeod from the University of Kansas. The discovery was published in the peer journal Zootaxa, where it was given the name Limnonectes megastomias.

World Film Festival director Kriengsak ‘Victor’ Silakong, sitting centre, announced at a press conference yesterday that the seventh edition of the festival will be held from November 6 to 15 at Siam Paragon. The festival is co-organised by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, the Ministry of Culture, The Nation, Daily Xpress, Major Cineplex Group and Paragon Cineplex. >> More on the festival, page 6

Rare and unusual Thaksin said he had found that three of four frogs raised in the incubation pond in front of the station were missing last June and filed a police complaint against a suspect identified by witnesses. However, the witnesses have since retracted their testimony, he added. Black, with a large, long body and wide head, Limnonectes megastomias can be found only in the deep jungle of Nakhon Ratchasima. The frogs made headlines around the world earlier this year for their unusual appearance and diet. The male of the species has oversized powerful jaws that contain a pair of fangs which helps it to catch and eat birds and other frogs. DAILY

Anger over Internet connection speeds grows; consumer watchdog bares teeth D A I LY X P R E S S

fter an increase in complaints about Internet connection speed not being as advertised, the Telecommunications Consumer Protection Institute has promised to publish results of tests late next month. The results will give consumers an accurate picture of which providers’ services are as advertised, said Institute director Prawit Leesathapornwongsa yesterday, after reporting there had been 128 complaints about suspiciously slow connections last month.

Connection check Internet users can check

their own connections at www.SpeedTest.or.th, which gets 440,000 visits per month. Prawit said the Institute would also put pressure on providers to offer refunds for days when consumers didn’t use the Internet.

Prepaid phones slammed A matching number of complaints last month – 128 – was made to the Institute about prepaid phone services being cut off on a certain date despite still being in credit. Prawit said the Institute would initially ask providers to re-establish the service to anyone who complained, then

study the case in detail before sending it to the National Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s Committee for its consideration.

More complaints In related news, a group of consumers has filed a complaint with the Institute that details six problems: the erection of phone masts without consulting local communities; the sending of “junk” cellphone messages; prepaid cellphone services being cut on a certain date despite being in credit; hidden extra fees for satellite broadcasters’ services; Internet providers’ irresponsibility over frequent signal disconnections; and providers’ lack of promptness in fixing problems with land-line phones.

he Fine Arts Department (FAD) has ordered a temple in Phuket to halt building on a Guan Yin sculpture and other large constructions, as they damage the authenticity of a historic site. FAD deputy director general Khemachart Thepchai said recently that he had told the abbot of Wat Phranangsang to bring a stop to the construction after his department received complaints from local residents, who asked the FAD to inspect work at the temple.

Damaging Following the inspection, it was found that the temple had not gained the required permission from the department to build the sculpture, an arch and other large building works, which would damage the integrity of the historic site, said Khemachart. The temple has been ordered to demolish the offending constructions. Khemachart will meet with the director of the office of fine arts and highranking monks in Phuket today to explain FAD regulations. “To repair, demolish, change or move objects, or even build anything on a historic site without permission is prohibited. Offenders face up to three years in jail and/or up to Bt300,000 in fines,” he said.

Woman in Philippines cracks US case Police say three people who tried to rob a man’s suburban Oklahoma City apartment were caught by his wife in the Philippines, who saw them on the webcam the couple uses to communicate while they are apart. Midwest City police Chief Brandon Clabes says officers nabbed the three burglary suspects over the weekend after Maribel Chouinard spotted them and called her husband, an air force master sergeant at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. The husband called police, who found two teens near the apartment and later found the third suspect. Clabes says all three were identified from a photo line-up e-mailed to Chouinard in the Philippines. Master Sergeant Jim Chouinard says he met his wife overseas and she’s waiting for her visa to be processed. – A P

oman Polanski lost the first round in his battle to avoid extradition to the United States for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl. Already locked in a Zurich cell for the last 12 days, Polanski learned he will remain incarcerated for an extended period as the Swiss Justice Ministry rejected his plea to be released from custody. Swiss authorities expressed fear he might flee the country

if freed from prison. The director of such film classics as “ Ro s e m a r y ’s Baby” and “Chinatown” has been wanted by US authorities since fleeing sentencing 31 years ago. “We continue to be of the opinion that there is a high risk of flight,” said ministry spokesman Folco Galli. Galli said the threat was too

great for the government to accept bail or other security measures in exchange for the release of the film-maker. Polanski was apprehended on September 26 as he arrived in Zurich to receive an award from a film festival. Authorities in Los Angeles consider him a convicted felon and a fugitive, and Switzerland says there has been an international warrant out on him since 2005. Legal experts say Polanski stands a minimal chance of a speedy release, even if his lawyers have suggested he be held under house arrest in his chalet in the luxury resort of Gstaad.

Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor is to undergo a heart operation to repair a “leaky valve”, the iconic Oscar-winning actress announced. The 77-year-old Englishborn movie legend said in a post on micro-blogging site Twitter that she was to have a new procedure that would not involve open heart surgery. “Dear Friends, I would like to let you know before it gets in the papers that I am going into the hospital to have a procedure on my heart,” the actress tweeted. “It’s very new and involves repairing my leaky valve using a clip device, without open heart surgery, so that my heart will function better. “Any prayers you happen to have lying around I would dearly appreciate. I’ll let you know when it’s all over. Love you, Elizabeth.”

Man steals in fit of ‘birthday blues’ A Taiwanese man has been nabbed for allegedly robbing three convenience stores, saying he was upset that nobody had celebrated his birthday. The 33-year-old, identified only by his surname Tseng, said his “erratic behaviour” was prompted by the birthday blues. According to the police, Tseng admitted to suffering from psychiatric disorders, and he had a record of theft. Tseng, who robbed the three stores in Taipei within 23 minutes, was found drunk and carrying 13,200 Taiwan dollars (Bt13,700) in cash at the time of his arrest. – AFP

here’s plenty to satisfy film buffs at the seventh edition of the World Film Festival of Bangkok, with more than 100 features and shorts screening at Paragon Cineplex from November 6 to 15. Termed by organisers as “seventh heaven for movie lovers”, the fest opens with indie director Anocha Suwichakornpong’s much-anticipated debut feature “Jao Nok Krajok” (“Mundane History”). Long in the works, “Mundane History” is a family drama, focusing on a wheelchair-bound son, his father, a male nurse and a grand old house that has seen better days. The narrative is an allegory on Thai society, says Anocha. Her production was supported by the 2006 Produire au Sud Bangkok, the biennial workshop for new producers and directors in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka held by the Produire au Sud Foundation of the Festival of 3 Continents, the French Embassy in Thailand and the World Film Festival of Bangkok.

The festival groups films into eight categories: Asian Contemporary, Cinema Beat, Cine Latino, Doc Feast, Short Wave, Guts Nouveau, Music & Dance a la Carte and Retrospective. “This year, we have focused more on indie films rather than big-name productions that crop up at the major film festivals,” says Kriengsak “Victor” Silakong, the festival director. “That’s why you’ll

see movies from Bulgaria, Portugal and Argentina.” In addition to “Mundane History”, there will be a solid selection of indie Thai cinema. Making its local premiere will be “A Letter to Uncle Boonmee”, which is part of avant-garde filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s larger multi-platform “Primitive” art project, which has recently opened in Liverpool. Indie maverick Thunska Pansittivorakul mixes politics with sex “This Area is Under Quarantine”. Latest Turner shock: Boredom What, no freak-outs vying for this year’s Turner Prize? Other than the cow-brain fudge? By Martin Gayford BLOOMBERG

t’s a strange Turner Prize exhibition that has just opened at the Tate Britain in London. There’s no sensation, no video, no blood and no outrage. Without the shock factor, what can you say about this year’s event? There’s a disquieting element in the works of Roger Hiorns, though it comes from reading the list of materials. All of his works are titled “Untitled”, but one is made of an atomised aircraft engine and three others include brain matter. In neither case is the experience of actually looking at the end product unpleasant or alarming. The most visible fragments of brain – the bovine variety, boiled and freeze dried – resemble fudge. Vital signs A sudden pain behind your breastbone could be a precursor to a heart attack By Nina C Zimmermann DEUTSCHE PRESSEAGENTUR Munich

I

t’s not unusual for people to feel a pain directly behind their breastbone and think that it can’t be their heart, since everyone knows that lies to the left side of the chest. It’s not unusual, but it’s wrong. While people think

that the problem is in their airways, it is often actually their heart, says Helmut Gohlke of the German Cardiological Association. The condition, known as angina, manifests itself as pain behind the breastbone. It’s an illness where the blood flow to the heart muscle is restricted. If not recognised and treated in a timely manner, it can lead

to a heart attack and death. Circulatory disorders remain a major killer, but people ignore symptoms like angina. So what are the symptoms of angina? The pain behind the breastbone radiates mostly to the throat, the upper abdomen and the left arm. It is typically described as a dull, oppressive sensation of constriction. Women often complain about lack of air. All those afflicted say the pain comes suddenly and in intervals, but does not last for days on end. Steady forms of angina are prompted by exertion, like physical work or stress. The pain usually disappears with rest. Things are reversed in the more dangerous, unstable

form of the disease. The pain appears out of nowhere, meaning there is a danger of a coming heart attack due to the complete blockage of a blood vessel. Both forms require an immediate trip to the doctor. Who is affected? Essentially anyone whose oxygen supply is insufficient for their heart’s needs can get angina.. That means coronary vessels are blocked by arteriosclerosis and can’t provide the heart with sufficient oxygen. But not everyone knows if they suffer from that symptom. Risk factors include a family member who suffered heart problems, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, smoking and, above all else, diabetes.

THE WASHINGTON POST

Between worrying about making ends meet during a recession, staying healthy during flu season, and dealing with everything else you have going on in your life, the stress adds up. But there are some easy – and free – things you can do to cope with all the tension. Here is what James S Gordon, the author of “Unstuck: Your Guide to the SevenStage Journey out of Depression”, suggests:

G Meditate. Several times a day, practise slow, deep breathing with eyes closed and belly relaxed. G Exercise regularly. It increases moodenhancing neurotransmitters in the brain and decreases the levels of stress hormones. G Reach out to friends or family for comfort and support. Sometimes just talking with others can help you put things in perspective.

SERENA REVEALS ALL

The presence of Danai Udomchoke and Tamarine Tanasugarn will make Thailand the top contenders in the SEA Games tennis competition in December. The country’s No 1 players, who announced two years ago they would never play in the SEA Games, have recanted and will represent the country once again. Apart from Danai, the men’s team also features Thai No 2 Kittipong Wachiramanowong and the defending doubles champions Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana. Thirty-two-year-old Tamarine, who will be playing her last SEA Games, will be joined by Suchanan Viratprasert, Wimbledon junior champion Noppawan Lertcheewakarn and Nudnida Luangnam. Former national players Thanakorn Srichaphan and Vittaya Samrej are the national coaches. – Daily Xpress

Serena Williams’ decision to appear nude tells a lot about her growing confidence after she revealed her insecurity over her body shape.

A year after saying she would never do it, Williams has bared her body for a magazine DAILY XPRESS

S tennis star Serena Williams on the cover of a magazine won’t turn any heads, but what if she’s wearing nothing but a bright smile? That’s exactly the surprise the tennis star will serve her fans when the latest issue of ESPN Body Issue hits the newsstands. Artistically posed, the nude 28-year-old’s image is a piece of art meant to celebrate her body. However, recently she told Britain’s Daily Mail that she had always struggled to accept her figure and thought her thighs and arms are far too big. The fact that she was willing to appear nude after revealing insecurities about her body to the media tells a lot about her growing confidence. “I want women to know that it’s okay. You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out,”

U

she told the Mail. In some way, the magazine’s release serves as a celebration for her triumph in returning to form on court. Williams climbed back to the top of the world rankings after her victory over Ekaterina Makarova in the second round of the China Open in Beijing. Her latest “exposure” follows the negative headlines Williams made last month when she launched a furious verbal assault against a line judge at the US Open. Her reputation was in jeopardy and many TV viewers around the world, shocked by her aggressive response after being called for a foot fault, have not forgotten the incident. “You’ve got a body the same as half the population on the planet. Big deal. Put it away. Don’t want to see it,” says a tennis fan from Melbourne, Australia, on The Daily Mail’s website forum. Reader Helen Hobart from Australia commented: “I couldn’t care less about this spoilt poor excuse of a sportswoman ever since she verbally abused and threatened the lineswoman at a recent event. She only apol-

ogised because she was worried about damaging her reputation, because she certainly wasn’t sorry in the press conference after her match. She has no class.” Tweeting tennis fans have also been busy. Twitter user YummyJummy comments “Common girl Serena Williams is showing all her ass-ets on the new cover of ESPN magazine. WHY would she do that.. she is better than that.” There are compliments too.

Elaine, of Birmingham in the UK writes: “Wonderful! Now THAT is a healthy, toned and fit sportswoman’s body.” Many also remark on Williams’ beauty. “Serena is looking absolutely beautiful,” says Led from London, while fellow Londoner Kim wrote: “Love it! No pressure to be skinny. Serena doing it for the girls!” Williams, however, is not the first US tennis star to have posed naked. Last year her rival Ashley Harkleroad, who was crushed by Williams in the French Open, hit the headlines for appearing on the cover of the August issue of Playboy. Harkleroad told Associated Press prior to the release of the magazine last year that she didn’t think it was a big deal and she was proud of her body. In 2008 when Williams heard about Harkleroad’s Playboy appearnce she said she respected her fellow tennis player’s decision but ruled out going publicly naked herself. “I can’t say right now that it’s even crossed my mind to be in that mag,” Williams said. One year has obviously changed all that.

PRESIDENTS CUP GOLF

Twins edge Tigers to reach US play-offs

A BIG DISTRACTION Norman’s big week starts with talk about separation AP, San Francisco

reg Norman couldn’t hide the obvious discomfort as he sat at a table yesterday for the opening press conference at the Presidents Cup, his right arm suspended by a black brace from shoulder surgery a week ago. Norman returns to the spotlight this week as captain of an International team that has never won on American soil. Adding to the attention was his statement four days ago that he has separated from tennis great Chris Evert, his wife of 15 months. He went public on the eve of his big week because her absence from Harding Park would only lead to speculation. Now that he’s here, Norman was determined to keep his private life just that. “I’m not going to talk about any of my personal life right now,” Norman said. “The situation right now is we are here for the Presidents Cup, and it’s all about the Presidents Cup, and my guys are in a great state of mind about being positive and getting out there and playing. And come Thursday, they are going to perform. I know they will perform in a positive fashion.” In one week, the Presidents Cup became about more than just golf. Along with Norman’s announcement that he has separated from his wife, Kenny Perry arrived in San Francisco needing one big hug from his extended family on the PGA Tour. His mother, Mildred,

died on Thursday of blood cancer. The funeral was on Saturday in Kentucky, and Perry decided to play the Presidents Cup because his family insisted. “You hate to lose one of your heroes,” Perry said. Even talking about her before only a half-dozen reporters, he worked hard to keep his emotions in check. He said his goal for the week was “not to bring the team down,” yet he was inspired already by how his team-mates have lifted him up. Emotion has worked its way into the Presidents Cup over the years. Jack Nicklaus was the captain in 2005 the year his 17-month-old grandson drowned in a hot tub. On the eve of the singles matches, the

I’M NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT ANY OF MY PERSONAL LIFE RIGHT NOW. Greg Norman American players presented him an oil portrait of his beloved Jake, and the room filled quickly with tears. The next day, they delivered him the gold cup. This year, there is trouble in

so many corners. Along with Norman’s marital woes and Perry grieving over his mother, Phil Mickelson remains in the throes of a tough year as his wife and mother recover from breast cancer. It remains doubtful that Amy Mickelson will join the wives this week. Few other golfers have dealt with as much loss as Norman over the years, mostly inside the ropes. Perhaps this is the time for players to rally around a captain. Norman would have none of it. “We haven’t even talked about it,” he said. “We talked about my shoulder, absolutely. It’s pretty hard to ignore that. But at the end of the day, somebody’s private life is their private life. They respect that.”

The Minnesota Twins completed an astounding lateseason rally to reach the Major League Baseball playoffs by edging Detroit 6-5 in 12 innings in a tie-breaker showdown yesterday. Alexi Casilla singled home Carlos Gomez from second base with the winning run, lifting the Twins to their 17th triumph in their past 21 games to overtake the Tigers and capture the American League Central division title. “This is absolutely the most unbelievable game I have ever played and seen,” Minnesota’s Orlando Cabrera said. “I’m really proud of my team-mates. We came back in September. When we were down we came together and said we had to pull this out and we came back. We didn’t give up.” Minnesota advanced to a first-round American League best-of-five playoff series against the New York Yankees that starts today (Bangkok time) in New York, the Twins having just 20 hours from winning joy before the first pitch in New York. Before a Metrodome record baseball crowd of 54,088, the Twins delayed their final start in the stadium. A new open-air ballpark will debut next April but at least one play-off game will be played there. The Yankees, who went 7-0 this season against the Twins this season, have won 23 of their past 26 games against the Twins and will start rested ace CC Sabathia against Minnesota in game one. AFP

FOOTBALL

Oil tycoon makes pitch for AC Milan

TO REAL WITH LOVE Roberto Carlos says he will play for free at old club Madrid D P A , Madrid

oberto Carlos is prepared to return to Real Madrid for free, according to an interview published by sports daily AS yesterday. The Brazilian left-back was the idol of the “madridista” fans 1996-2007 because of his powerful surges down the left, his never-say-die attitude, his dynamite free-kicks – and his vital goals. He left Real in 2007 – having helped them to three Champions Leagues and four Spanish Ligas – after a feud with then sporting director (and former team-mate) Pedja Mijatovic. Carlos moved to Fenerbahce, but made it clear to AS that he intends to leave Istanbul in December. “I am here in Madrid,” he said, “to show my new wife, Mariana, the city, where I have been really happy. We are expecting a baby, it will be my eighth one.” He then confirmed his decision to leave Turkey in two months time. “I am 36 years old,” he said, “and I have two years of football left in me, and I would to return to Brazil and play for some team there. I really miss my home, my family, my country.” The Brazilian said that “there is another possibility: I would be prepared to play six months for Real for free, from January to June ... I spent wonderful years in Madrid, winning everything, and I consider it my home.” When asked about the plan

Roberto Carlos, who wants to leave Fenerbahce in December, is keen to help develop Real’s young talents. of Real president Florentino Perez to bring the club’s former stars back to the Estadio Bernabeu (he has already brought back Zinedine Zidane, as “sporting advisor”) he replied that “it is very important for me to return to Real Madrid. “I would prefer to do so as a player, but if that is not possible then I would like to work here with the youth teams, teaching them everything that I know.” He added that the current Real team, the most expensive side in football history, is “a great one, despite Sunday’s defeat against Sevilla. players of a very high level.” When asked about the criticism levelled at coach Manuel Pellegrini following the Sevilla defeat, he replied that “this is normal. Now what they have to do is to start again. Real have a team good enough to win the Champions League, which is the most important thing from them this year.” He defended Pellegrini by saying that “he has demonstrated [at Villarreal 20042009] that he understands football, and he has to be respected for this.” He also said that Kaka “is number one in the world” and that Cristiano Ronaldo “has made a wonderful start in Madrid”.

Albanian oil tycoon Rezart Taci is prepared to purchase AC Milan for US$1 billion, even though Silvio Berlusconi has not put the club up for sale. “We’ve spoken about it. He told me that he doesn’t intend to sell, but I know that if he turns in that direction he would look at my proposal,” Taci told yesterday’s Gazzetta dello Sport. “We’re talking about the president that has won more than anyone. ... But maybe Milan isn’t such a key part of [Berlusconi’s holding company Fininvest] anymore.” Milan sold off thier top player, Kaka, to Real Madrid this off-season to stave off financial crisis, and the club is off to a rough start in Serie A with only nine points through seven rounds. Earlier this year, Taci withdrew from a bid to take over Bologna. But he said he’s “sure to have the necessary finances” to purchase Milan, adding that he would also be open to taking over a minority portion of the club.

Sign up Vieira: Drogba Didier Drogba wants Chelsea to bring in exArsenal star Patrick Vieira if the club can waive a Fifa transfer ban. The Premier League leaders are appealing against the embargo on signing new players. Drogba says veteran midfield hardman Vieira should be the first name on Ancelotti’s wish-list for the January transfer window. “It would be a good move for Chelsea to bring Patrick in,” the Ivory Coast centre forward told The Sun.

Angry Maradona may resign as national coach DPA, Buenos Aires

Diego Maradona is furious with his co-trainer.

ith Argentina’s participation in the World Cup at risk, coach Diego Armando Maradona was openly weighing his resignation as national coach yesterday. At issue was not only open criticism of his coaching abilities but also the injury of Pablo Zabaleta, who annoyed Maradona with his insistence on continuing to play for his

club, Manchester city, at a crucial time. “We have two difficult [qualification] matches ahead of us. That really hurts,” the World Cup Champion player from 1986 said, adding that such behaviour must stop. “We can discuss after the [matches] whether I will continue under my own conditions,” he said. Maradona’s anger was aimed

at co-trainer Carlos Bilardo, who failed to block the deployment of Zabaleta with Manchester. In addition, Carlos Tevez, who also plays for Manchester, arrived late on Monday in Buenos Aires. The relations between Maradona and Bilardo have been shaky for some time. “When I was offered the position of national coach by [AFA president Julio] Grondona, I

was the happiest person in the world. But afterwards, things have happened which hardly pleased me,” the 48-year-old football hero said. On Saturday, Argentina face Peru in Buenos Aires. On October 13, the gruelling test continues in Montevideo against rivals Uruguay. Argentina are languishing in fifth place in the regional tournament.

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo is at the centre of a sordid battle between sorcerers with one trying to ruin him on behalf of a spurned lover and another to save him, reports said yesterday. “A rich foreign woman who was betrayed” has paid a Spaniard nicknamed Pepe to “end Ronaldo’s career,” Correio da Manha daily said. Ronaldo, who is often photographed with a beautiful young woman in his arms, is currently carrying an ankle injury, and the sorcerer Pepe is claiming credit for it. Pepe was pictured holding a black wax doll and a photo of the Real Madrid forward with his name scrawled across it. The sorcerer has refused to identify the scorned woman he claims has already paid him ¤15,000, Correio da Manha said. “She paid me to end Cristiano Ronaldo’s career and I’m doing that,” Pepe was quoted as saying. “It’s a job, I have nothing against him personally, but I’ll see it through,” he added. The daily 24 Horas, which carried the same story, said another “fetisher” called Fernando Nogueira, known as the “sorcerer Fafe” was contacted on Tuesday by “someone very close” to Ronaldo “to counter the black magic of this so-called Spanish sorcerer.” Fafe, while casting doubt on the powers of his rival, told the paper he had “burnt candles next to a photo of Ronaldo to put an end to what is being done, if it is true.” The player has since Monday been with the Portugal squad ahead of Saturday’s must-win World Cup qualifier against Hungary. Ronaldo has said he expects to shake off the ankle injury. He was due to undergo tests either yesterday or today, according to the team doctor. Coach Carlos Queiroz expressed confidence on Tuesday that Ronaldo would be fit for the key World Cup qualifiers against Hungary and Malta on October 10 and 14 respectively. Portugal, who are third in Group One with 13 points, need to win both matches and for second-placed Sweden to slip up in Denmark, to book their ticket to the finals in South Africa next year.
