F-16Cs belonging to the US Air Force’s demonstration squadron arrive at the Don Mueang air base yesterday. A practice session is scheduled for today and a demonstration will be performed tomorrow.

Bt210 million is being pumped into Thai football with the likelihood of more assistance in the near future to promote the game at all levels, Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart said yesterday in a House session. Sanan, who supervises the Sports Authority of Thailand, said the Authority had secured Bt100 million for Thai provincial leagues and another Bt110 million for the Thailand Premier League. Alongkorn Maneekart, Nakhon Phanom MP for the Pheu Thai Party, raised the issue in an impromptu session. As well as asking the government for more funds for the game, Alongkorn raised concerns over too few live broadcasts of Thai football, growing hooliganism among supporters, and increased gambling on football. Sanan said he would look into problems regarding illegal gambling and match-rigging by players and team officials. He pledged to seek a larger budget for future years.

More live TV matches

By Suparat Iamtan

PM’s Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtaey, who supervises state-owned Channel 11, promised more matches would be aired live on weekends while noting that Channel 9 had proposed broadcasting live matches next season. Democrat MP Samart Maluleen, vice chairman of the Football Association of Thailand, said that this year’s budget had increased the government’s sport fund to Bt620 million. He said the Bt100 million promised to provincial leagues would be a big boost to football at the grassroots level.

orning commuters passing Metropolitan Police headquarters’ monument yesterday were puzzled to see two fully-uniformed officers standing to attention in the hot sun for more than an hour. They were actually being punished for missing one of the daily flag-raising ceremonies for police instituted as part of a new government policy. Police Division 5 deputy superintendent, Pol Lt-Colonel Jumpol Kananurak, said he ordered the two public-relations officers, Sergeant Noppadol Sritaptim and Sergeant

Somyod Pleeprai, to stand guard as an example to other officers so as to prevent any future violations of their supervisors’ instructions.

Orders from above Jumpol said that attending the daily raising and lowering of the national flag was a government policy aimed at promoting national unity. He said police in all provinces were required to hold an evening flag-lowering ceremony at 6pm every day until December 5. After serving his punishment, Sergeant Noppadol explained to reporters that he

After the October 6, 1976 coup, the Tanin Kraivixian administration revived the practice, with daily ceremonies at 8am (which state officials were required to attend to set an example for the public) and 6pm. Amplifiers were installed at intersections to broadcast the national anthem at these times, and pedestrians were asked to stand still and motorists to stop their vehicles as a mark of respect.

the orderliness of the line-up, he stayed away but was later punished. Calling for justice, he urged his supervisors to understand what had really happened.

oogle and Yahoo! have joined a growing roster of e-mail service providers with users duped by hackers into betraying passwords to accounts. After Microsoft blocked access to thousands of Hotmail accounts in response to hackers plundering password information and posting it online, the list of victims was growing to include users of an array of e-mail services.

“We recently became aware of a phishing scheme through which hackers gained user credentials for Web-based mail accounts including a small number of Gmail accounts,” Google said. “As soon as we learned of the attack, we forced password resets on the affected accounts. We will continue to force password resets on additional accounts if we become aware of them.” Cyber-crooks evidently used “phishing” tactics to trick users of free e-mail services into revealing account and access information. “We are aware that a limited number of Yahoo! IDs may have been made public,” Yahoo! said. “Online scams and phishing attacks are an ongoing issue.”

German writer wins Nobel for literature Romanian-born Herta Mueller honoured for work that ‘with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed’ A P , Stockholm

R

omanian-born German writer Herta Mueller won the 2009 Nobel Prize in literature yesterday, honoured for work that “with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed”. The 56-year-old author, who

emigrated to Germany from then-communist Romania in 1987, made her debut in 1982 with a collection of short stories titled “Niederungen”, which was promptly censored by the Romanian government.

Uncensored in Germany In 1984 an uncensored ver-

sion was published in Germany and her work depicting life in a small, Germanspeaking village in Romania was devoured by readers. That work was followed by “Oppressive Tango” in Romania. Because of her vocal criticism of Romania’s government, and its feared secret police, she and her husband left the country. The Nobel includes a 10-million-kronor (Bt46.8-million) prize and will be handed out on December 10 in the Swedish capital.

he FBI investigated whether Anna Nicole Smith plotted to kill her tycoon husband’s son as they battled for his father’s fortune, but the former Playboy Playmate who died in 2007 was never prosecuted, newly released files show. Smith’s FBI records, obtained exclusively by The Associated Press, say the agency investigated Smith in 2000 and 2001 in a murderfor-hire plot targeting E Pierce Marshall, who was at the centre of a long legal fight to keep the starlet, model and stripper from collecting his father’s oil wealth, valued in the hundreds of millions. The younger Marshall died three years ago of natural causes. There is no indication how authorities became aware of any alleged scheme, but agents interviewed Smith on July 3, 2000. Told why she was being questioned, “Smith began crying and denied ever making such plans”, a report said. An attorney for Smith’s estate, Kent Richland, was surprised by the allegations. “I have not heard anything about that,” he said.

S

cientists said the dramatic red dust storm that blanketed Sydney two weeks ago provided an unexpected benefit to the environment. Photographs went around the world of the red dust cloud that enveloped Sydney on September 23, with many saying it looked like the end of the world. Now scientists monitoring the effect the dust had on Sydney Harbour and the surrounding ocean have discovered that nutrients in the topsoil boosted microscopic life in the waters. This increased carbon capture and showed that increasing nutrients in the ocean could help counter the effects of global warming.

Storm moved 140,000 tonnes of soil every hour

Anna Nicole Smith, in these January 2001 photos, points at E Pierce Marshall, accusing him of illegally interfering in the relationship she had with her late husband J Howard Marshall II.

The huge storm carried about 140,000 tonnes of soil every hour from central Australia across thousands of kilometres to the east coast of Australia. An estimated 4,000 tonnes of dust settled on Sydney. Another 3 million tonnes landed in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. Professor Ian Jones, director of the Ocean Technology Group at the University of Sydney, said

SCIENTISTS HAVE DISCOVERED THAT NUTRIENTS IN THE TOPSOIL BOOSTED MICROSCOPIC LIFE IN THE WATERS. the nutrient-rich topsoil dumped on Sydney contained up to 1 per cent nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphates. “After the dust is deposited on the sea surface, the nutrients dissolve in the sunlit region of the ocean and are used by the phytoplankton to multiply,” Jones said. Measurements taken following the dust storm confirmed phytoplankton tripled in Sydney Harbour and in samples taken 10 kilometres offshore. “As a consequence of this, the extra phytoplankton in the Tasman Sea will be capable of capturing 8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, about the equivalent of a year’s CO2 emissions from a coal-fired one-gigawatt power station,” said Jones.

A man accused of throwing his four-year-old daughter off a Melbourne bridge has pleaded not guilty to her murder. Arthur Phillip Freeman was ordered to stand trial yesterday in the death of his daughter Darcey in January. Prosecutors told the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court that 36-yearold Freeman was driving his three children across the West Gate Bridge when he stopped, lifted Darcey out and allegedly tossed her from the bridge. Darcey Freeman fell 58 metres into the Yarra River and later died in the hospital. Prosecutor Gavin Silbert said the incident happened moments after Freeman phoned his ex-wife and told her she would never see their children again. – AP

Love-triangle case to go ahead A US judge refused to throw out charges against an ex-Nasa astronaut who allegedly drove across the country wearing diapers to confront her suspected rival in a love triangle. A defence lawyer for Lisa Nowak, 46, called on the Orlando judge to dismiss the charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary and battery arising out of the bizarre 2007 incident. Nowak, who allegedly wore the adult diapers so she would

Nowak not have to make bathroom breaks, was dismissed from the astronaut corps in 2007 after her arrest for allegedly attacking another officer, Colleen Shipman. At the centre of the allegations is a report that Nowak, who now works for the US Navy, allegedly pepper-sprayed Shipman, a US Air Force captain, who she believed shared her romantic interest in Nasa shuttle pilot Bill Oefelein. Nowak, a mother of three who has flown aboard Nasa’s space shuttle Discovery, drove 1,500 kilometres from Houston,

Texas, to Orlando International Airport to confront Shipman,. But defence attorney Donald Lykkebak said the allegations of the pepper spray were contradicted by Shipman’s statements to medical personnel who treated her at the scene.

Singapore monk faces jail for fraud A high-living Buddhist monk who ran a multimillion-dollar medical charity in Singapore is facing up to seven years in jail after being convicted of fraud. A trial court on Wednesday found Shi Ming Yi, 47, guilty of conspiring with his personal aide Raymond Yeung, 34, to cheat the Ren Ci charity of S$50,000 (Bt1.2 million). “Though Shi Ming Yi was given many opportunities to come clean when his statements were recorded, it is evident that he did not do so and moved from one story to another,” said District Judge Toh Yung Cheong, who will hand down the sentence in November. Evidence produced by the prosecution during the 21-day trial showed Shi and Yeung conspired to cheat the charity, which was founded by the monk in 1994 and still provides subsidised medical care to elderly patients. Yeung is a Hong Kong-born Australian citizen who befriended the monk in 2000 and moved to Singapore to work with the charity. – AFP

fter her successful comeback to the music scene a few years back and two concerts that proved immensely popular with audiences of all ages, diva Jennifer Kim is all set to launch a new career – as a producer. She’ll be using her new company, Lamsen, to finance her next concert, as well as other showbiz ventures. “Actors and actresses often become the producers of TV dramas but it’s rare that singers organise than their concerts. I’ve been offered a lot of events and I obviously want to seize these opportunities, as I don’t know what will happen

In 2007, Kim found herself back in the media spotlight following the unexpected success of the sell out concert, “Snow Kim with Seven Men” organised by GMM Media, which went on to sell more than 300,000 VCD and DVD copies. The following year, she was back on stage with “Kim Raider vs X-Men” with similar results. Earlier this year, she picked her debut award, winning the prize for Best Female Artist at the Nine Entertain Awards 2009. Next month, she is coming up

The budget is set at Bt20 million, but that sum doesn’t include the priceless jewellery she’ll be wearing on stage. “I’ve always done my best to put on a great show and this one won’t be any exception,” she says. “Putting on a concert is hard work. Looking for ‘Easy Love’? Masters of the remix – if not spelling – MSTRKRFT will flail the Fist of God tonight on the Royal City Avenue By Manta Klangboonkrong D A I LY X P R E S S

C

anadian electronic duo MSTRKRFT debuts in Bangkok tonight with music like you’ve never heard before. Jesse Keeler and Al-P are the terrible spellers behind the tune unit pronounced “Mastercraft”. They met as punks in 1997 and together goosed up studio recordings for Black Cat #13, Femme Fatale and Death from Above. Their own first LP, “The Look”, came out in 2006, featuring hits like “Easy Love” and “Work on You” and several remixes of tunes from other bands. We pried the headphones off Al-P long enough for a chat in advance of tonight’s gig on RCA.

What’s in the backpack? We’re finishing up the tour cycle of our just-released album “Fist of God”, playing Australia, Japan, South Korea and of course Thailand. We’re also preparing for our next album when we get back home to Toronto. So it’s true – there’s music in Canada. Canada actually has quite a few internationally successful acts right now, as we’re seeing on our Australian tour. Besides us, there’s DJ A-Trak from Montreal, who was a DJ for Kanye West. The funny thing about Canada, and Toronto specifically, is that you never get big at home first. You have to become successful outside of Canada, and then people at home will notice you.

What’s your favourite remix? Recently it’s the mix we did for Usher, which was – much to our disappointment – never officially released, because it contained elements of Eric Clapton’s “Layla”. But I think any music connoisseur would agree that our usage was clever, insightful and tasteful. That’s more than I can say for most of the sample-based music being released today. It’s quite frustrating for us in that we’ve never dared use any samples, out of respect for the original artists, and out of respect for ourselves and our dying craft. How did you get John Legend singing on “Heartbreaker”? We’d done a remix for his “Green Light” that he actually liked, and he told us so personally. That rarely happens when we remix an artist, let alone an artist of John’s calibre. Instead of paying for that mix, we agreed that John would do vocals on our album. He liked the “Heartbreaker” instrumental, and he liked the lyrics that Nick [from Space Cowboy] wrote for it, so we ended up in the studio in New York City with him for two days.

nother excellent film by Filipino director Joselito Altarejos, whose “The Man in the Lighthouse” I mentioned last week, is “Antonio’s Secret”. Its sensitive portrayal of a gay teen’s coming of age ends with an explosive same-sex rape. Watching the film, one learns that the Philippines’ anti-rape law protects not only women but people of all gender identities. That’s also the case in Thailand, but it could change here if some Neanderthals get their hands on the law. Barely two years ago a coalition of women’s groups, childrights groups and LGBT groups finally succeeded in having the legal definition of rape expanded beyond that committed against “females other than one’s own wife”. The law now protects women from sexual assault by their own husbands. It affords equal protection for males and LGBT persons, assaults against whom in the past were classed as “indecent acts” and carried much lighter penalties (if the police deigned to investigate them at all). Now there’s a proposal to amend this protection, reverting to the definition of rape as applying only to attacks women – excluding post-operation TGs. The exact same offences against others would again be regarded as merely “indecent acts”. One can only wonder what motivates this regression to Stone Age mentality, where only female virginity counts – not physical or psychological trauma.

Motives aside, perhaps someone forgets that such distinctions are unconstitutional, since the country is no longer governed under the 200-year-old Three Emblems Law, which some amendment supporters cite as legal standard. The 2007 constitution prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sex – which in the official statement of intent specifically includes sexual orientation and gender identity. The unequal protection for males and transgenders makes it doubtful that justice under the proposed new law will be carried out in a fair manner. The amendment supporters cite “judicial and prosecutorial difficulties” in the current law, betraying their obsolete mindset and undermining their stated desire to modernise the law with, for example, measures against Internet-related crimes. It’s also paradoxical to increase penalties for sex crimes against the elderly, disabled and pregnant women while taking away stringent protection for others. Transgenders and boys are, if anything, as vulnerable, because they have been historically neglected in this regard. Sex laws are getting tougher around the world, questions of justness and effectiveness aside. Poland looks set to become the first European Union country to chemically castrate convicted paedophiles. Now more than ever, it’s imperative for our justice system to get the basic principles right. Share ideas on gay issues vai asiantrekker@yahoo.com

Blyth leads in Indian Open

Dokic’s father on hunger strike Tennis player Jelena Dokic’s jailed father has launched a hunger strike to protest the 15month prison sentence he received for threatening the Australian ambassador. Damir Dokic’s lawyer, Bosiljka Djukic said she had been informed by Dokic’s wife that he was no longer taking any food, water or medicines in the prison in the northern town of Sremska Mitrovica, where he is serving the sentence. “I am very worried,” Djukic said. “He does not deserve this.” The 50-year-old Dokic was arrested in May after reportedly saying he would blow up Australian ambassador Claire Birgin’s car over the negative articles in the Australian press in which Jelena Dokic accused him of beating her. Upon arrest, police also found large quantities of weapons in Dokic’s home. – AP

Australian Adam Blyth shot an eight-under par 64 to lead after yesterday’s first round of the $1.25-million Indian Open. Blyth’s bogey-free round began with birdies on his first three holes, and the 27-yearold sank eight birdies in all for his “best round in five years on the Asian Tour.” Blyth had a one-stroke lead over Lee Sung of South Korea, who fired six of his seven birdies on the back nine. Another strong finisher was India’s Chinaswamy Muniyappa, who overcame his two bogeys to finish on sixunder par 66. New Zealander Michael Campbell, a former US Open champion, had a disappointing four-over 76. Former Indian Open winners Mardan Mamat of Singapore (73) and Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant (75) also struggled. – AP

Rafael Nadal celebrates after defeating James Blake in the China Open yesterday.

A TOUGH ROAD Nadal edges Blake to reach China Open quarters AFP, Beijing

W

orld No 2 Rafael Nadal fended off a tough challenge from hard-hitting American James Blake to advance to the quarter-finals of the China Open yesterday with a 7-5 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 win. Top seed Nadal and the 29year-old American thrilled the crowd on centre court at the Olympic tennis venue for nearly two-and-a-half hours with their blistering ground strokes and powerful serves. The pair traded early breaks in the first set and then remained even until 5-5, when Blake surrendered his serve again, giving the 23-year-old Spaniard the opening he needed to close out the set. In the second, Nadal, who won Olympic gold on the same court last year, broke Blake at love to go up 3-2, but the relentless American refused to give up, fighting off a match point and clawing back to 5-5.

Nadal quickly broke him again to go up 6-5, but Blake, the world number 24, again showed his mettle, using nifty net play to break the Spaniard and force a tiebreak, which Blake won in spectacular fashion. In the third, Blake missed a golden opportunity to break Nadal at 2-2, when he had the Spaniard at love-40, and he paid for it when he double-faulted to fall behind 5-3. Nadal then served out the match at love. “It’s an important win because James is always a very tough opponent,” Nadal said. “He’s a really good player. I think he has one of the best returns... very fast. James played unbelievable in the tiebreak.” Nadal said he was not frustrated when he failed to close out the match in straight sets, noting: “I was playing really well. I was really happy.” “When I had the chance, I played aggressive. ... Winning in three sets always gives you extra confidence.” In the quarter-finals, Nadal – who won the China Open in 2005 – will face Russia’s Marat Safin, a crowd favourite and

2004 champion here, who upset Chilean seventh seed Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets, 6-3 6-4.

Tsonga blows away Gasquet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame swirling on-court winds to beat his compatriot Richard Gasquet for a place in the quarter-finals at the Japan Open tennis tournament yesterday. The 2008 Australian Open finalist and second seed displayed fine reflexes at the net to complete a 4-6 6-2 6-2 win played out as winds from Typhoon Melor lashed the country. Defending champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic outclassed Andreas Beck of Germany 6-4a 6-1, while Australian former world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt eliminated France’s Fabrice Santoro 3-6 6-3 6-1. Tsonga described the nearly unplayable conditions as “very tough” after his 99-minute second-round match. “I think I served better than [Gasquet]. That made the difference,” he added.

eteran Tamarine Tanasugarn, who has been sidelined by an elbow injury since August, returns to the WTA tour with a first stop in Osaka next week. The 32-year-old has been off court since losing to Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in the first round of the US Open. To rest an injury that has been nagging her since Wimbledon, she withdrew from three Asian circuit events – in Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing – which saw her ranking slump to No 111 this week. Tamarine, who had been taking pain-killing injections, was advised to take rest before returning to full practice. After a month of recovery, she said the elbow was fine and ready to take the workload that the game demands. “I’m able to serve harder now than at the US Open. The pain is gone and I’m feeling much better,’’ said Tamarine who will play in Osaka, Taiwan, Astana (Kazakhstan), India, Japan and at the SEA Games. The winner of three WTA titles was concerned about her falling ranking but is determined to return to the top 100 by December, which would ensure her direct entry into the main draw of the 2010 Australian Open. “My goal is to get back into the top 100. When I regain confidence with my serves, I should be playing well, because I don’t have any problem with the groundstrokes,’’ said Tamarine, adding that she might skip some events if she is able to crack the top 100 in Taiwan. She also served notice that she would only be playing the women’s team event at the SEA Games in Laos this December.

Fergie unveils Busby stamp

THE WAITING GAME Porstmouth keeper James faces up to World Cup battle AFP, Watford, England

s David James watched his England team-mates celebrate qualifying for the World Cup finals on his television, an unpleasant thought crossed the Portsmouth goalkeeper’s mind. What if he was still be watching from the sidelines by the time England kick off their campaign to win the World Cup in South Africa next year? In the five games James had missed as a result of a series of injuries, West Ham’s Robert Green had performed well enough and, more importantly for England coach Fabio Capello, the team had kept on winning. James only had to look at the treatment handed out to Michael Owen – banished from the squad entirely – and David Beckham – reduced to a bit-part substitutes role – to know that experience and reputation are no guarantee of selection under the Italian. Now James is fit Capello faces a tough choice between him and Green and the former Liverpool star acknowledges that he may not regain his place for tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine. “I don’t even know if I’m going to start on Saturday. Mr Capello, from here until the World Cup, will be making the right decisions,” James said. “If I’m not the one who starts the game and it’s for the benefit of England, that’s fine. “The process, my whole existence here, is for England to be successful. That doesn’t necessarily include playing because,

David James insists he is happy to fight for his England place. at the end of the day, it’s the squad that will be victorious, not just the eleven players on the field.” The 39-year-old, once dubbed “Calamity James” for a series of mistakes made during his time at Liverpool, is never mentioned as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, yet he has rarely let his country down. Manchester United’s Ben Foster, who will miss the Ukraine game through injury, was regarded as James’s main rival going into this season, but the youngster has produced enough nervous displays for his club to suggest he may not be ready for the pressure of the World Cup just yet. James believes the scrutiny of

IT’S A DIFFICULT JOB PLAYING FOR ENGLAND,PERIOD, WHETHER YOU’RE A GOALKEEPER OR A CENTRE-FORWARD. David James being England’s number one can prove too much for younger

goalkeepers and he said: “It’s a difficult job playing for England, period, whether you’re a goalkeeper or a centre-forward. “You have to go through these experiences. If you have criticism it’s a cliche to say you’ll come out right in the end. You don’t always. Most people won’t. But it’s a part of the process. I’m sure that, come the World Cup finals, we’ve got enough months ahead of us to ensure that the three goalkeepers in the squad will be well tuned and prepared.” However, James expects Foster to emerge intact from his current malaise. “I’m sure he’s in the right place to get the right advice at Manchester United,” James added.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson described the late Sir Matt Busby as “one of the truly great football managers” as he unveiled a new stamp of the club’s legendary former boss yesterday. The Scot who survived the 1958 Munich air disaster and rebuilt the decimated team into European Cup winners a decade later is one of 10 people featured in a series of stamps which celebrate the lives of eminent Britons. Presenting Busby’s stamp to the cameras at United’s Old Trafford home, Ferguson said: “They are all illustrious names in this latest issue of commemorative stamps. “Great Britons indeed and there can be no doubting that Sir Matt Busby deserves his place amongst such eminent company. He was one of the truly great football managers. “Everyone at Manchester United will take great pride from this honour which has been bestowed on the late, great, Sir Matt Busby.” Busby managed United from 1945 to 1969, also winning the FA Cup twice and league championship five times, and is the club’s longest-serving manager, although Ferguson, with 23 years under his belt, is closing in on the record. He was seriously injured in the Munich crash in which eight of his players died, but shaped a new team featuring George Best into European champions. Busby died of cancer in 1994 aged 84. A framed print of the stamp was also given to the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park in Glasgow. AFP

orld Cup veterans Javier Mascherano and Juan Veron have thrown their support behind embattled Argentina coach Maradona ahead of tomorrow’s crucial qualifier against Peru. “Maradona has all our support,” Liverpool midfielder Mascherano said after a closed training session on Wednesday at the general headquarters of

the Argentine Football Association. “He’s the coach and he knows what he does.” His comments come a day after Maradona, acknowledged as one of football’s greatest ever players, said he may quit as coach if he cannot continue on his terms, even if Argentina qualify for South Africa 2010. Estudiantes de Argentina playmaker Veron, who is unavailable for the Peru match

due to a suspension, defended Maradona’s stance. “Diego isn’t satisfied, or doesn’t like something, it’s not bad that he demands certain conditions to continue,” he said. Argentina are in danger of missing out on next year’s World Cup, and most of the blame has been placed on Maradona who has failed to mould a team out of some of

the world’s best players including Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez. Maradona said in a television interview after taking over as coach that he only works in the afternoon because he likes to sleep in. This rankles many Argentines. Polls show a majority feels Maradona is unfit to coach, despite his success as a player.

THESPORT A city official has asked the PGA Tour to remind Michael Jordan that he can’t smoke cigars at Harding Park during the Presidents Cup. US captain Fred Couples invited Jordan to be an honorary assistant captain at the Presidents Cup, and the NBA icon even teed it up during a practice round Monday at Harding Park before the week officially got under way. But when city officials saw a picture of Jordan in the San Francisco Chronicle toking on his stogie, they were quick to remind the PGA Tour that Harding Park is a city property and smoking is not allowed. “You mean about Spare the Air Jordan?” Recreation and Park general manager Phil Ginsburg told the newspaper. “I’ve already sent off an e-mail to the PGA Tour director. It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal, and that we would appreciate their support.” It was not clear which PGA Tour official received the email. Tournament director Tom Clark was not aware of it until he picked up the newspaper yesterday morning. “This is a non-smoking facility,” Clark said. “He probably wasn’t aware of it.” The PGA Tour might have been. It has declined to make Jordan available to the media this week, except for its own website. Asked about his cigars during that Q&A on Monday, Jordan said the number he smokes might depend “because I heard this is a public place, so they limit what you can smoke”. “I’m not even supposed to be smoking, but this was a practice round and no one said anything,” he said. “So I’ve been very cognisant of that to some degree.” Jordan, dressed in a team uniform as he walked with the US team during practice, still had his cigar yesterday. He simply chewed on it without lighting up. “The tobacco usage did become a little bit of a story out there, because I saw Michael with a cigar in his mouth that was unlit,” Stewart Cink said. “He’s trying to set a good example for the rest of the people who see on TV what we are doing out there, just try to set a good example and try to chew his tobacco instead of smoke it.” According to the Chronicle, public golf courses were exempt from the city’s smoking bans until 2006 – one year after John Daly lost in a play-off to Tiger Woods in a World Golf Championship. The Board of Supervisors narrowly voted to apply the rules equally to golf courses as other city parks. That comes with a $100 fine. Couples defined Jordan’s role this week as walking with groups, hanging around the team room and talking to players. “His role is to have fun with the guys,” Couples said. “He’s certainly not telling them how to hit a chip shot. That I can promise you.” He won’t be smoking his cigars, either. At least not at Harding Park.
