nna Nicole Smith was ill, confused and isolated in a hotel room with a cornucopia of prescription drugs in the days before her death, an investigator testified in a criminal case stemming from the celebrity model’s overdose death.
‘She couldn’t sit up’ California Department of Justice investigator Danny Santiago testified that witnesses said Smith was unable to walk unassisted into the Florida hotel, and she was so
weak she could not sit up to drink liquids. The testimony was presented in a preliminary hearing involving charges that Smith’s former lawyer-boyfriend Howard K Stern and two California doctors conspired to illegally provide Smith with controlled substances before her drug-overdose death at age 39. Superior Court Judge Robert Perry, who will decide if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial, noted the defendants have not been accused of killing Smith and questioned the relevance
when prosecutor Renee Rose asked Santiago about Smith’s cause of death. Stern, Dr Sandeep Kapoor and Dr Khristina Eroshevich have pleaded not guilty. Their attorneys have said they are undecided or unlikely to call defence witnesses during the preliminary hearing.
Prescription drugs Santiago also identified prescription drugs found in the hotel room as the prosecutor showed pictures of bottles and hundreds of pills. Some of the prescriptions were in Stern’s name, although some used an alternate spelling, Stearn, and some had been prescribed by Eroshevich, Santiago said.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is calling out his wife Maria Shriver for apparently violating a state law he signed – holding her cellphone while driving. The celebrity website TMZ.com posted two photographs showing Shriver holding a phone to her ear while she’s behind the wheel. On his Twitter feed, Schwarzenegger wrote to TMZ.com founder Harvey Levin: “Thanks for bringing her violations to my attention. There’s going to be swift action.” Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear says that by “swift action”, the governor means he’ll ask his wife not to hold the phone while driving. In a note accompanying the video, TMZ responded to Schwarzenegger’s tweet by saying, “... your scofflaw wife was at it again”. nyone with a love for dolls will no doubt have already visited Central Plaza Rama III at least once over the last 10 days to check out “Doll Mania 2009”, the annual festival that touches on all things to do with dolls and which, sadly, closes for another year today. But what an event it was! It got underway with a fabulous fantasy fashion show on the theme “Four Elements”. Titled the “Legend of God’s Warriors”, the show featured Athichart “Um” Chumnanont as the Wind God, Patchada “Roam” Nampan as the Earth God, Marvin Taweepol as the Water God and Phathit “Phai” Phisitkul as the Fire God. At the end of the performance, Um, Roam, Phai and Marvin reappeared alongside the SD 17 model ball-jointed dolls (BJD) from the Four Elements collection, with each actor dressed in the same outfit as their doll. Um looked a real treat as the SD 17 boy “Reisner” doll in an attire that

was dripping diamonds and emeralds worth Bt600,000. The festival showcases dolls from around the globe from such big name creators as Japan’s Volk and Korea’s Latidoll, as well as doll makers from Hong Kong and Thailand. Blythe and BJD enthusiasts also loaned their limited edition dolls to the event. “BJDs are the new trend because they are made from high quality materials. BJDs also come with gimmicks that make them more intriguing than other types of dolls. Some Blythe-doll collectors have now started to collect BJDs, though that doesn’t mean they’re abandoning their Blythes,” says Phannipa “Mod” Ruksawong, one of Thailand’s largest collectors and owner
of one of the first Reisner’s SD 17 BJD. “The term BJD refers to any doll that is articulated with ball and socket joints, which allow this type of doll to look more realistic and to move more freely than dolls with hinged joints. BJDs were originally created by Japan’s Volks, who manufactures various collections of BJDs,” she explains. “Korea became the second to produce BJDs when they introduced Latidolls. The popularity of BJDs has since grown and more countries have started to produce BJDs in various styles.” The main Reisner doll highlighted at “Doll Mania”, says Mod, has a blonde wig, which can be replaced, wears linen clothing and accessories made
of gold and brass and costs a cool Bt600,000. Add to that the diamond and emerald jewellery worth more Bt3 million and we’re not talking child’s play. “Actually, the combined value of the Four Elements collection is more than Bt5 million,” Mod grins.

any patients want to get a second opinion after being told they have a life-altering condition or after their doctor recommends a treatment that is risky or that isn’t covered by insurance. Judith Storf, a counsellor at an independent patient advisory service in Bielefeld, Germany says patients often feel the possible therapies have not been thoroughly explained or they want to review the diagnosis. Sometimes patients say that their doctor has advised them to seek a second opinion. Germany’s nationwide association for physicians in Berlin also endorses the principle of getting a second opinion. “If you seek advice from two or even three consultants about investing money then when it comes to your own heath, you should do the same,” says the association’s president Joerg-Dietrich Hoppe. This applies especially when a diagnosis means a life-altering condition has been detected. Not only a tu-

mour diagnosis, but also diagnoses of degenerative illnesses that could impair one’s ability to make decisions. “In such cases, patients should proceed with the
greatest measure of certainty,” says Hoppe. Storf advises patients to avoid using Internet search engines that supposedly spit out the name of another doc-
tor. “The quality and reliability of these techniques tend toward zero,” she says. A better way is to go to a local independent adviser. “They have the advantage of having a good overview of what physicians offer. Even if they cannot recommend a doctor, they can identify several.” Patients also can consult their health insurer, many of which offer help from specialists who can be reached on a hotline or by appointment. In the event of getting two very different medical opinions, always consider what appears to be better for one’s own interests. Could one of the doctors perhaps have a financial interest in one particular treatment method? Are there accepted standard medical treatments for the condition? The patient must then make a decision. “This is the downside of being a responsible patient,” says Elss. “When you have gathered all the information, you have to make a decision.” To act only out of a sense of duty toward the doctor is not advisable.

The warm, moist air in heated indoor pools calms the respiratory passages of asthmatics, explains Professor Harald Morr, chairman of the foundation. This reduces the risk of an asthma attack caused by physical exertion, which often occurs, for example, when asthmatics jog in cold weather. It is important, however, to choose a swimming pool that is well ventilated and one where hygiene is held to an exact standard. Pools that use chlorine-free disinfectants such as UV light are more suitable than those that use
chlorine, says Morr. Pools that have a strong smell of chlorine in the air could trigger an asthma attack in sensitive children who have a tendency to have allergic reactions. Children between the ages of seven and 12 with asthma were examined in the study. Half of them had swimming lessons for six weeks. The others did not. Researchers found that children in the group that had swimming lessons snored less, breathed more through the nose and their rib cages were less deformed. The positive results of swimming were still recognisable up to one year after the end of the training, the lung association said.

Teen prodigy Noppawan Lertcheewakarn was awarded Bt400,000 for her outstanding performance at Wimbledon where she won both girls singles and doubles trophies. Noppawan, the first Thai to reign as junior world No 1 and claim a junior Grand Slam singles title, was handed the incentive from the National Sports Development Fund by Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kajornprasart . Davies, who plays for French club Sochaux, underwent several hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Centre Medstar, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. The injuries make it unlikely Davis will play in next year’s World Cup. The tibia and femur in Davies’ right leg were broken. He also sustained facial fractures and a fracture in his left elbow in the accident, which took place at about 3.15am local time in the suburbs of the US capital. Davies will be hospitalised for at least a week and additional operations will be required to stabilise his broken elbow and possibly the facial fractures. “Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation,” said Dr Dan Kalbac, a US team doctor who collaborated with the doctors at the hospital. “Due to Charlie’s fitness level, his prognosis for recovery and his ability to resume high-level competition is substantially improved.” The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia and claimed the life of Ashley J Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Maryland, according to US Park Police Sgt David Schlosser. There were three people in the vehicle, and Davies and Roberta were passengers.

The report came after The Guardian and other leading dailies said the 61-yearold Swede, who twice led England in the tournament during his five years as national manager, was to meet North Korean soccer chiefs in Beijing later this week. Eriksson was to travel with the club’s executive chairman Peter Trembling. Williams ends Toyota deal Formula One team Williams will have a new engine supplier next season after their contract with Toyota was ended. An extension of the Toyota deal was signed earlier this year but it was mutually agreed to end the deal. Renault and Cosworth are considered the most likely contenders to supply Williams in 2010. Williams had used Toyota engines since 2007, but never won a race with them. Meanwhile, Rubens Barrichello says he is negotiating with Williams for the 2010 Formula One season. Barrichello, currently with Brawn GP, says the English team is one of his options for next season. “I haven’t signed with anybody yet,” the 37year-old Barrichello said. “But it’s true that I’m talking with Williams and Brawn.” AP

utch yacht designer Peter van Oossanen has cast doubt on the legitimacy of Australia’s famous 1983 America’s Cup win by saying he, and not the celebrated Ben Lexcen, designed the famous winged keel. Lexcen has for the past 26 years been recognised as the man who designed the groundbreaking winged keel that was credited with Australia II’s win over Liberty in the memorable series. But van Ooosanen said yesterday that Lexcen played only a minor part in developing the keel. Instead, van Oossanen said he and fellow Dutchman Joop Slooff, an aerodynamics expert, were the brains behind the design. Van Oossanen said Lexcen, who died in 1988, contributed
about 10 per cent of the development work. If true, that would make Australia II’s victory illegitimate, as America’s Cup rules at the time said the design work must be done by nationals of the entrant country.
