He applied the “open source” concept in which anyone can join and the public decides. Patchara, or @iPattt on Twitter, is also a user of online social networking services such as Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, and has been blogging for years. He has been twittering more intensively for four months and has almost 1,200 followers on the site. “Twitter combines the two

You must be real otherwise people will not pay attention to you,” he says. “Activities both online and offline can enhance the potential to strengthen your brand.” In this way, individuals can own a brand without having to

depend on the costly mainstream media for publicity. Patchara and his close friends had once had a music band. But the group was forced to dissolve after it couldn’t bear the cost of promoting itself through the media. Now iHear Band has become famous on Twitter – and the more people talk about it, the faster it becomes more successful in real life. The band is also going to perform at the “Twittcm” event at a Wawee Coffee branch in Chiang Mai, and has been hired to perform at other events. Patchara said Twitter opens the chance for users to be close to famous people. Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, or @thaksinlive, veteran politician Chaturon Chaisang, or

@chaturon, and Patee Sarasin, or @patee122, have replied to his “tweets”. “In real life, we would never have a chance to talk to these people,” he says. According to Patchara, Tweeple who joined the event and met their counterparts in person are more eager to get updates on their friends’ online. Meanwhile, other Tweeple who have heard people talking about the gatherings do not want to be “out of trend” by missing the next event. Tweeple also take part in other activities including “Twittbkk”, which has been held for a third time, and a BarCamp gathering, where every attendant must stand up and speak on any topic he or she fancies.

Harrod’s owner urging his ‘fellow Scots’ to detach themselves from ‘the English and their terrible politicians’

WHATEVER HELP IS NEEDED FOR SCOTLAND TO REGAIN ITS INDEPENDENCE,I WILL PROVIDE IT... I’M READY TO BE YOUR PRESIDENT. Mohamed Al Fayed The Fulham Football Club owner is the father of Dodi Fayed, the lover of Diana, princess of Wales, who was killed in the same 1997 Paris car crash. Fayed has long alleged that the couple were killed in an establishment plot involving Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip.

ohamed Al Fayed, owner of plush London emporium Harrods, told The Sunday Times newspaper he was ready to become the first president of an independent Scotland. The Egyptian tycoon, 80, who owns an estate in the Scottish Highlands, said he was urging his “fellow Scots” to detach themselves from “the English and their terrible politicians”. Fayed, who has been repeatedly refused a British passport, said he hoped to be offered Scottish citizenship if a planned referendum on Scottish independence leads to Scotland leaving the United Kingdom – and then becoming a republic. “You Scots have been living in a coma for too long,” he told the broadsheet. “Whatever help is needed for Scotland to regain its independence, I will provide it. When you Scots regain your freedom I’m ready to be your president.” The Scottish National Party (SNP), in power in the devolved Edinburgh administration, is committed to holding a referendum on independence. But Fayed is not impressed with Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond, the SNP leader. “I will do anything for Scotland, but I don’t want this Alex Salmond,” he said. “I asked to meet him but he refused.”

Some 6,000 people make themselves comfortable as they participate in the Breakfast on the Bridge event at Sydney Harbour Bridge yesterday. The event is part of the Crave Sydney festival, a major celebration of Sydney’s way of life, offering 31 days of food, art, comedy and outdoor fun, including the Sydney International Food Festival.

Fans attempt ‘Thriller’record Dancers have launched a worldwide attempt to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the greatest number of people simultaneously dancing to Michael Jackson’s hit song “Thriller”. Some 230 people donated food or money to the food bank in the Canadian city of Vancouver for the right to contort themselves into the zombie poses of Jackson’s song, which blasted out of loudspeakers Saturday as howls reverberated off surrounding high rises in a central plaza. Fans in more than 200 cities around the world were expected to take part in the celebration dedicated to the memory of the King of Pop, who died on June 25 at the age of 50 after taking a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs. The global event was ostensibly launched in Vancouver, but started at the same place around the world, according to a clock on a conference call by organisers. “When we take our first step people in China will take their first step,” said coordinator Graeme Lea in Vancouver. Although separated by thousands of miles, the celebration in Vancouver mirrored a similar event in a park in the Argentine capital where about 400 Michael Jackson fans shook to the beat to the singer’s 1982 hit. In France, some 60 people aged from 11 to 73 signed up to take part in the ‘Thriller’ dance extravaganza in the western village of Gourin. AFP

Hollywood star Brad Pitt, 45, emerged unscathed from a motorcycle accident. The US photo agency X17online reported that the actor crashed with his vehicle after an incident with a photographer. Pitt, who wore a helmet, pulled his motorcycle to the berm of the road and fled into a building to escape the paparazzi. He was picked up later by his assistant. X17online reported that the photographer followed Pitt with a car and came too near to his bike. Pitt lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a car in front of him, before he was thrown to the ground. The father of six was visibly upset and had angry words with the photographer. – DPA

Man ‘kills wife with acid’ Malaysian police arrested a man suspected of killing his wife and possibly blinding his teenage daughter by splashing acid on them while they slept. The man is believed to have crept into his wife’s separate bedroom early on Saturday and poured a bottle of acid over the two, who were in the same bed in a home in northern Penang state. Neighbours rushed them to a hospital after the 17-year-old daughter ran out screaming, a police official. The man later gave himself up at a police station. The wife died several hours later, while her daughter suffered burns on her face and would probably lose her sight, the national news agency Bernama and The Star newspaper reported yesterday. – AP

PAUL McCARTNEY, ANNOUNCING A CONCERT TOUR FROM DECEMBER 2, ENDING ON DECEMBER 22 WITH A “FESTIVE SPECTACULAR” AT O2 ARENA. “Starting in Hamburg, ending in London and rocking everywhere in between. I’m very much looking forward to ending the year on a high.”

Director Ang Lee’s biggest technical problem in ‘Taking Woodstock’ was finding authentic hippy extras By Ann Hornaday THE WASHINGTON POST

or “Taking Woodstock”, director Ang Lee used three types of film stock, negotiated rights for more than 20 songs and orchestrated a long, complicated tracking shot involving a constantly moving camera, 120 cars and about twice that number of people. But the hardest technical issue he had to solve? Bodies and hair. “The biggest challenge was to get extras who were skinny but who were not working out all the time,” producer and screenwriter James Schamus says. “And who still had pubic hair.” Say what? “When you think about it, that was really a generation of people who weren’t fat, but who weren’t staring at themselves in the mirror all the time,” Schamus says. “Or shaving everything off down there. It encapsulates the difference in 40 years right there.” There are a lot of naked hippies in “Taking Woodstock”. Which means hairy nudity. And there was a time long, long ago, when most people let their nether regions grow wild. That little detail turned out to be pivotal, because establishing period authenticity was most important. And that called for the extras to strip naked. All that skinny-dipping! All that free love! Eventually, their numbers hit critical mass in the tracking shot that depicted the “half a million strong” immortalised in story and song.

Let your hair down For Lee, “Taking Woodstock” represented a chance to shake off the angst that has driven so many of his films. “I was yearning to do a comedy-slash-drama without cynicism,” he told reporters at Cannes in May, when the film premiered. “It took me a long way to get there, but I thought after 13

Ang Lee made a switch from doing heavy dramas to the lighthearted affair of ‘Taking Woodstock’. years I’d earned that right to ... just be relaxed and happy and at peace with myself.” Schamus concurred, noting that in many ways “Taking Woodstock” represents a prequel to their 1997 drama, “The

Ice Storm”, about 1970s suburban alienation and ennui. “‘The Ice Storm’ was really centred around a very specific technical film problem we wanted to solve,” Schamus said, “which was how to film the least com-

fortable, worst sex scene in the history of cinema. “The technical problem for Woodstock,” he continued, “was how you [depict] sexuality and a real sensuality of life without cynicism.”

In many ways, the innocence and optimism epitomised by Woodstock’s “three days of peace and music” was embodied by the era’s youth, who weren’t toned, waxed or bronzed into taut, narcissistic perfection. “They were more relaxed,” Schamus said simply. “They didn’t always have one eye on the mirror.” The laid-back personal grooming habits and slouchy posture of the era became a coded way to communicate tribal affiliation, according to Lee. “I think that relaxation was the way they rebelled against the establishment and their parents,” he said. “And it was a way of connecting, to nature and to each other, without saying anything.” > > O P E N S T H U R S D AY “Taking Woodstock” will be at Paragon Cineplex and the Apex theatres.

FIRING BLANKS Pygmies Gijon give Spanish giants Real a hard time AFP, Madrid

A

fter losing to AC Milan in the Champions League in midweek, Real Madrid dropped two points in the title race with a 0-0 draw at Sporting Gijon on Saturday as they failed to score for the first time this season. Real go top above Barcelona on goal difference but the champions, also beaten at home in Europe by Russians Rubin Kazan, can open up a threepoint lead with a home win over Real Zaragoza. Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini was shorn of striking options with Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain and Ruud van Nistelrooy injured so the onus was on Raul and Kaka. The pair had two of Real’s best chances, with Esteban Granero missing the other, but Real could not find a way through against a Sporting side that remain unbeaten at home and a respectable seventh in the

table. “Football can be like this sometimes,” reflected Real playmaker Guti. “You can create lots of chances but don’t take them. “We had some important attacking players absent today and of course we missed them.” Sevilla, the only Spanish side to win in the Champions League this week, missed the chance to capitalise on Real’s slip following a 0-0 home draw against 10man Espanyol. Sevilla stay three points behind Real after failing to score in the league for the second successive game although that was largely down to some heroics from Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. Espanyol, now unbeaten in five matches, had been reduced to 10 men after defender Nicolas Pareja was sent off for hacking down Diego Capel on the hour mark but Kameni pulled off some fine saves to hold on for a point. “We have to get some points away and try to win at home – that is our strategy,” said Kameni. The Milan defeat had raised defensive issues at Real Madrid again and Spanish international

Raul Albiol was dropped to the bench with Argentine Ezequiel Garay taking his spot at centreback. Sporting had lost 7-1 and 4-0 against Real last season so must have feared the worst. Sporting goalkeeper Juan Pablo denied Esteban Granero with an outstretched foot early in the second half and then a fingertip save to thwart a fierce Kaka free-kick. Substitute Rafael van der Vaart almost caught Pablo out with an overhit cross but the goalkeeper recovered just in time to palm the ball over. “This is like a win for us,” said Sporting coach Manolo Preciado. “We worked so hard and you could see how tired we were at the end.” At Atletico Madrid, unpopular coach Abel Resino may have gone but the fans jeers continue after the club failed to beat nineman Real Mallorca struggling to a 1-1 draw at the Vicente Calderon. A last minute equaliser from Borja Valero denied Atletico victory after Diego Forlan had put them in front from the penalty spot.

angers manager Walter Smith hopes the club can find a new buyer quickly after confirming the Old Firm giants are being run by bankers. The Gers boss said Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS), part of the Lloyds group, are now in charge at Ibrox since chairman David Murray stepped down at the beginning of the season. Rangers have debts of around £30 million and HBOS has the club on a mercilessly short leash, moving to appoint their own representative, Donald Muir, to the board of directors last week. The club announced in January that every player on their books was up for sale and with no new players having been bought by the club since August 2008 Smith says a new owner needs to be found, sooner rather than later. “They have placed a representative of the bank on the board so as far as I’m aware that’s the situation [that the bank is running the club],” said Smith after his team’s 1-1 draw with Hibs on Saturday. “It’s obviously not a good situation. It’s not a situation that I don’t think anyone wants the club to be in.”

Schalke safe, says Magath A F P , Berlin

S

chalke 04’s coach Felix Magath insisted yesterday the Royal Blues are not in danger of bankruptcy despite reported rising debts of nearly ¤300 million which must be explained to Bundesliga bosses. “This is all silly stuff: these old, old things have already been discussed over and over again: it's the same thing,” said Magath.

Ancelotti reveals family fears

BALL BOY IS SORRY Teen apologises for his mistake that cost Kop points A F P , London

teenage Liverpool fan who caused one of the oddest goals in English football history came out of hiding yesterday to apologise profusely for belting a beach ball onto the pitch. Callum Campbell, 16, told the Sunday Mirror newspaper it was he who whacked the inflatable onto the pitch, triggering Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on October 17. The youngster has faced death threats for his part in a defeat that dented the Reds’ bid to win the Premier League title and locked himself indoors for two days. “It was me,” Campbell told the tabloid. “I’m the one who did it. I’m the one caught on camera. I’m so, so sorry. This is my worst, worst nightmare.” In the fifth minute of the match, Black Cats striker Darren Bent fired a shot on target, but it hit the Liverpoolbranded beach ball, taking a big deflection and completely bamboozling Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina – who went for the wrong ball. Millions around the world have seen the bizarre incident. When the beach ball came Campbell’s way before the kick-off, he punched it onto the Stadium of Light pitch. It went into Reina’s goal but blew out as Sunderland went on the attack. “When I got home I went into the garden and threw up. I was physically sick – and that’s before the death threats started appearing on the Internet the

The referee should never have allowed the goal. I just hope the real fans understand and forgive me. “How was I supposed to know what would happen? It was just a bit of fun, and if I could turn back the clock and do it differently, throw the ball into the crowd instead of on to the pitch, then I would. “I’m really, really sorry it happened like it did. “It’s bad enough when Liverpool lose, like in a normal

BUT MY MUM TELLS ME IT WASN’T MY FAULT – AND THAT’S WHAT I HAVE TO BELIEVE. Callum Campbell way, but this was just one big disaster.

“It would have taken someone a couple of seconds to move it away, or put a foot on it and flatten it, but nobody bothered. And then it started to roll about. Just at the wrong moment. “But I accept I shouldn’t have thrown it on to the pitch in the first place.” His uncle Tony Moore said: “Let’s say Liverpool are just three points short of winning the league at the end of this season – he’ll be beside himself, thinking they were the points that cost them.” At Campbell’s request, part of the fee for his interview was donated to the Hillsborough Disaster Fund.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti was forced to skip title rivals Manchester United’s clash at Liverpool after returning to his native Italy to visit his 86-year-old father Guiseppe, who is ill. The former AC Milan manager also missed his side’s preparations for Saturday’s 5-0 trouncing of Blackburn Rovers to be at his father’s bedside but was hopeful he was recovering. “Sunday, we have a free day and I will go back to Italy,” said Ancelotti. “I will return on Monday [today] as I think my father will be better. “These are difficult days but I think after Monday he will be better and I can stay here quietly and without problems.” On Saturday, two goals from Frank Lampard and one apiece from Michael Essien and Didier Drogba after Gael Givet had put through his own goal were enough to take Chelsea above United to the top of the Premier League. Chelsea were also buoyed by the return of midfielder Joe Cole, who started a game for the first time since suffering a knee injury in January. The England international was involved in dangerous attacks from the very first minute at Stamford Bridge – he headed a clear chance wide then – and left the pitch to an ovation from the fans. Ancelotti was also impressed. “He is a great professional and I know that after eight months it is not easy to play like today,” he said. “That was a surprise. I am happy for him.” – A F P

Lennon spared boss Redknapp’s wrath AFP, London

H

Stoke City’s Glenn Whelan after scoring the winning goal.

arry Redknapp refused to blame Aaron Lennon’s attitude for Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Stoke after the winger’s decision to limp off through injury helped dent the Londoners’ fine start to the season. Spurs were being frustrated by the Potters at White Hart Lane on Saturday when Lennon limped to the sidelines

with an ankle problem and asked to go off. Redknapp, his manager, had already used his full complement of strikers and was seen to ask Lennon to reconsider, but the winger maintained he was too injured to carry on. Tottenham duly played the last 15 minutes with 10 men and Stoke capitalised on their numerical advantage to plunder a late winner through a

clinical Glenn Whelan. Redknapp opted for diplomacy when asked about Lennon’s decision. “I was hoping he could stay on but he couldn’t and suddenly we were down to 10 men,” he said. “We had made three substitutions which I don’t like doing because it can give you a problem, and it did. “Aaron just said he couldn’t

carry on and that was that. I didn’t give him a nudge – I just said to him we would only have 10 men and could he play on, but he said his ankle was too sore. I don’t want to say any more, I don’t want to cause an issue.” If that sounds conciliatory, Redknapp’s terse manner suggested he might have been more stern with Lennon in the privacy of the dressing room.

ROSSI IN 7TH HEAVEN Italian Yamaha rider champion again; Stoner takes M’sian title AFP, Sepang, Malaysia

D

efending world champion Valentino Rossi claimed his seventh MotoGP title in a thrilling race in wet conditions yesterday at the Malaysian Moto GP. Australian Casey Stoner won the race but the 30-year-old Italian secured the title by coming in third on his Yamaha. Spain’s Dani Pedrosa was second. Rossi said he was delighted to seal the championship title with one race to go, in Valencia on November 8. “Today’s race went a bit like how the season has gone because we were so fast on the dry tyres, but right before the start of the race it started to rain so we had to go out on the track without any

wet setting,” said Rossi. “It’s a great achievement, and for me it’s the ninth championship, the seventh in MotoGP.” Rossi paid special tribute to his team-mate Jorge Lorenzo. The 22-year-old Spaniard finished the race fourth but had been the only rider still in contention for the world title. Lorenzo, who was second on the grid, ended up starting from the back of the field after his number one bike could not start in the pits. He had to ride his spare machine. “Throughout the season I had great rivals, at the end especially Jorge my team-mate, who stayed very close to me, and we had some great fights. He’s a great rival so congratulations to him,” said Rossi. “But we are on the top and now we’ll relax and try to take in this achievement. The ninth championship is great. I’m so happy,” he added. I am like the old chicken – 30 years now – but I have made another egg! That’s nine!,” he joked.

Heavy rain delayed the start of the race by 35 minutes and played a major part when the action finally got underway. Rossi started on pole but failed to hold his lead and went wide into the first corner with a pack of riders, led by Pedrosa and Stoner, who had overtaken him with ease.

atthapark “Feem” Wilairot finished sixth in the 250cc division of the Malaysian Grand Prix yesterday. It was the second successive year that the Thai had recorded a top 10 finish. The 5.543km Sepang circuit certainly is one of the favourite tracks of the Thai Honda PTT SAG rider as he came eighth last year. Starting the race from sixth on the grid, the 21-year-old kept a blistering pace to storm into third place in the second lap. However, Ratthapark’s challenge wilted in the latter stages, leaving him fighting for the fifth spot with Hector Faubel of Spain. For a large group of Thais brought by AP Honda to support Ratthapark at the venue, it was frustrating to see him overtaken by his Spanish team-mate in the final lap. “Today the start was awesome. But the back pain, which I am having for sometime, caused me to lose the rhythm,” he said.
