’m very impressed by Ratthapark [“Feem” Wilairot, Thai 250cc rider]. To make it in this sport you need to be talented and have the will to win – there are so many tough competitors at this level. The 250cc World Championship is not easy. And, truthfully, I’ve been surprised at the progress he’s made since joining it two years ago. He’s really quite impressive.

Hitting a high note Blind Thai piano student wins international prize after thrilling Canadian judges with her composition By Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong D A I LY X P R E S S

“T

he blind are not helpless – all they need to be successful is the courage to develop their special talents,” says a 21-year-old Mahidol University student, just back from Canada where she won the prestigious Maple Prize. A third-year piano student at MU College of Music, Ubolwan “Paeng” Piakaew performed from September 30 to October 4 at the second International Piano Concert by People With Disabilities, in Vancouver. She thrilled the judges with her own composition, “Beautiful Canada”, based on a Canadian folk song with a mix of Thai sounds, and DAILY

walked away with the Maple Award and the US$300 cash prize. Though she was born blind, Paeng says she has always aspired to be a pianist and composer and practised hard for that dream. Explaining that her artistic vision is to combine the sounds of the piano and Thai musical instruments, she said her next ambition was to study in Austria and soak up its great history of classical music.

Sensitive hearing Paeng was four years old when her mother, suspecting the child had especially sensitive hearing in compensation for the visual impairment, began sending her to piano lessons.

,,

I BELIEVE THAT IF YOU ARE DETERMINED ENOUGH TO DO SOMETHING, YOU CAN DO IT. Ubolwan “Paeng” Piakaew “The first time I heard piano music, I was overwhelmed by how beautiful the sound was. That has been my inspiration to study hard ever since,” says Paeng, adding that she spends about 10 hours per day practising.

Condition ‘no obstacle’ Being sightless means she has to concentrate harder so as to remember the notes by heart, but she never thought her condition was an obstacle to study, work or other daily activities. “I believe that if you are determined enough to do something, you can do it. But you have to love what you do. I love to play piano so I’ve practised very hard since childhood,” she said. Since using both hands to play meant she couldn’t feel the Braille music scores, Paeng chose to have her teacher play and record songs, which she could then listen back to and memorise. Her favourite piece to play is Chopin’s “Scherzo No 2” because, she says, it evokes so many emotions and always keeps audiences engaged.

National Artist Sanith Dittapan died after suffering from a stroke, announced National Culture Commission SecretaryGeneral Somchai Seanglai yesterday. Sanith was 87. The Abhidhamma rites for this former Silpakorn University lecturer in painting are ongoing until Sunday at Pavilion 5 of Nonthaburi’s Wat Cholapratan Rangsarit, after which his body will lie in state for 100 days. The Office of the National Culture Commission has donated Bt120,000 to publish a book of Sanith’s works. Born May 12, 1922 in Bangkok, Sanith’s masterly paintings drew praise from fellow artists and critics alike. During the 50 years he devoted to art, he pioneered the rendering of traditional Thai stories in modern styles, mastered portrait painting in oils and played key roles both in art education and conserving artworks for the nation.

The 20-year-old hit back hard when the unknown assailant punched her for not handing over a cigarette, forcing him to flee. “When she said no, he got upset and lashed out at her – and she lashed right back,” a police spokeswoman said. “She punched him three times in the face with a karate punch and kicked him with a karate kick. She did pretty well – not that we’re encouraging that sort of thing.” The woman, who has been practising karate for 10 years, was not available for comment. AFP

scar-winning actor and political activist Sean Penn arrived in Cuba hoping to interview its revolutionary icon Fidel Castro. Cuban television showed Penn walking in the town of Nueva Gerona on the Isle of Youth, accompanied by Cuban painter Alexis Leyva. US entertainment news website TMZ reported earlier that Penn was writing a story

for Vanity Fair magazine about how the Obama administration has affected Cuba. Since taking Penn office in January, US President Barack Obama has moved to ease a half-century of tension with Cuba, with small steps such as relaxing rules on visits and money

transfers to the island. The Obama administration has said it will not, for now, seek to end the US economic embargo, instead urging Havana to show progress on human rights. Obama recently asked Spain to send a message to Cuba urging its President Raul Castro to step up efforts to improve relations with Washington. “Tell Raul that if he does not take steps, neither can I,” Obama told Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, according to the El Pais daily which cited a diplomatic source.

Madonna arrived in Malawi to visit the girls school she is building in the impoverished country where she adopted two children, an official for the star’s charity said. The 51-year-old celebrity was accompanied by her four children – Lourdes, 13, Rocco, 9, as well as her two adopted children. Madonna adopted the Malawian-born Mercy, 3, this year and David, 4, in 2008. Madonna was to take part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the school yesterday. Her Raising Malawi, a charity founded in 2006 when she first visited the country, helps feed, educate and provide medical care for some of Malawi’s orphans. Malawi, a nation of 12 million, is one of the poorest countries in the world. About 500,000 children have lost a parent to Aids. Madonna will also meet with President Bingu wa Mutharika and visit some of the orphanages her charity supports. – AP

ful rather than abhorrent practice,” club chairwoman Hatijah Binti Am said as members from around 30 families attended a gathering in Bandung, West Java, for the opening of the first Indonesian branch last week.

“Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, so polygamy can be a way of life there too,” Rohaya said. Polygamous relationships are believed to be gaining in popularity in secular Indonesia, but it’s impossible to say how many there are because the marriages are performed secretly at mosques and are not recorded by the state. Indonesia’s 1974 Marriage Law permits a man to have a second wife if his first is an invalid, infertile or terminally ill. However, there is no way to monitor adherence to the rules.

Saudi woman to be lashed over sexually themed television show A Saudi court sentenced a female Saudi journalist to receive 60 lashes for her links to a broadcaster that aired a TV talk show in which a young Saudi man boasted about his premarital sexual conquests. The woman, who works for Lebanese TV network LBC, had been ordered to stand trial along with another female producer of the Bold Red Line talk show. The episode, aired at the end of July by LBC, shocked many in the country, where the state enforces a puritanical brand of Islam. Rosanna Al-Yami, who is under a travel ban as she awaits her punishment, said that the judge dropped all charges that she had been directly involved with the episode. However, Al-Yami said she was sentenced to 60 lashes for having been a part-time employee for LBC’s Saudi operations. The judge said that LBC had lacked the appropriate operating licence. – A P

LOVE’S STOLEN MOMENTS A new romantic drama promises to have the soft-hearted weeping into their tissues By Kitchana Lersakvanitchakul D A I LY X P R E S S

romantic drama that will hit the big screen just in time for Christmas carries a message of enduring love and loss that is guaranteed to have moviegoers weeping into their hankies. Napat Pavaputanont na Mahasarakham, managing director of NGR Productions, who’s backing “Rak Thi Ror Khoi” (“October Sonata”), says she was immediately drawn into the story when director Somkiat Vithuranich presented her with the screenplay. “I had no idea how to produce this kind of movie,” says Napat, whose studio was behind last year’s “Long Tor Tai” (“The Coffin”), a successful horror film co-produced with Singapore and starring Ananda Everingham and Karen Mok, and the canine tale “Ma Mha Si Kha Khrub” (“Mid Road Gang”). “But I was really determined to make it after reading Somkiat’s screenplay and knowing that I had the support of several people including [veteran producer and director] Euthana Mukdasanit.”

He’s also very idealistic when it comes to love,” says Rachwin, who will also star in MC Chatrichalerm Yukol’s “King Naresuan 3”. “Like Rachwin, the scene where we part is the one where I try to express really sad feelings.” > > O C TO B E R I N D EC E M B E R “Rak Thi Ror Khoi” will be in cinemas on December 23.

SKIN DEEP Don’t sag, get yourself a Nefertiti chin I’m approaching my 50th birthday and my facial skin seems to be sagging, especially beneath the jaw. What can I do? It’s gravity that creates jowls. The muscles and platysma skin covering our lower neck and upper chest begin to look like one continuous piece of tissue, with no contrasting sharp jaw line. Fortunately, dermatologists now use botulinum toxin – Botox – to recontour the jaw. Botox is injected to relax the platysmal muscles that pull the face down, letting other muscles do their job of keeping the facial skin up. This new technique is called the “Nefertiti lift”, after the beautiful queen of ancient Egypt, who supposedly had a perfect jaw line. The Nefertiti lift is suitable for people who want a nonsurgical “mini-lift” for the lower face. To make sure you’re a candidate for it, just ask a dermatologist.

Strachan takes over at Boro

CSKA Moscow sack coach Ramos Russian champions CSKA Moscow have sacked Spanish coach Juande Ramos after just 42 days at the helm, the club’s press service reported. Ramos replaced Brazilian legend Zico on September 10, but the side have struggled and are currently lying fifth in the Russian Premier League with 43 points, 10 points behind leaders Rubin Kazan with four matches remaining. Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of city rivals FC Moscow was the last straw for the Red Army side’s management, who announced their decision to part company with the Spaniard. – AFP

I don’t think we had any doubts to be honest,” said Keita. “We showed today that we are a great team and go out to win. On a personal level I am happy with my first hat-trick although I am not really a goal-scorer.” Ibrahimovic joins Valencia’s David Villa at the top of the scoring charts on seven goals while Lionel Messi has six goals after scoring a fine chip. .Earlier Spanish international

Villa returned with a bang scoring his seventh goal of the season as Valencia defeated 10-man Almeria 3-0 on Sunday to move into the top four. “This was an important game for and three points that could make the difference between Champions League football at the end of the season,” said Valencia coach Unai Emery. Depor saw a four-game winning run come to an end in emphatic fashion, crashing to a 4-0 defeat at Valladolid. “Nobody in the dressing room is talking about the Champions League,” insisted Depor coach Miguel Lotina.

hailand will field a strong contingent of 30 athletes for the 18th Asian Athletics Championships from November 10-14 in Quangzhou, hoping that the youngsters will gain experience with the exposure in the continent’s top event. In the Asian meet in Jordan two years ago, Thai athletes bagged three gold medals, including the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays, to finish eighth overall. Their chances in the two relay events in Quangzhou are quite good despite the presence of strong athletes from hosts China, Japan, India, Qatar and Sri Lanka. However, Thailand will not be sending Buoban Phamang, the reigning women’s javelin champion and gold medallist in the Doha Asian Games, this time. She is still recuperating from a shoulder injury sustained at the Beijing Olympics last year. The 16-member men squad will be spearheaded by track king Wachara Sondee, the Doha Asiad bronze medallist who anchored the team that won the 4x100m gold in 39.34 seconds in Jordan. “We are sending a contingent that is a mixture of experience and raw talent. I hope the youngsters will gain experience,” said national head coach Pol Maj-General Suppanut Ariyamongkol.

‘REDS OUTPLAYED US’ Ferguson expects United to bounce back from loss A F P , Liverpool

ir Alex Ferguson warned Manchester United’s Premier League rivals that his side’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool will only strengthen their determination to retain the title. United cut a strangely subdued look as second half goals from Fernando Torres and David Ngog at Anfield on Sunday condemned the champions to their first defeat in 12 matches. Ferguson was forced to admit United had been outplayed and out-fought. But the United manager believes the frustration of a result which allowed Chelsea to move two points ahead of them at the top of the table is certain to prove the catalyst for a powerful winning run. “We will always react. That is the important thing about our club,” Ferguson said. “They have always had to do that. It is not something unusual for us. At some points of your season you are going to have disappointments. “Last year we lost 4-1 at home to Liverpool, got hold of the bit again and went on to win the league and that is our challenge.” After four successive defeats, Liverpool knew another loss would end their title hopes, so it was no surprise that Javier Mascherano, Fabio Aurelio and Lucas snapped into tackles with abandon. But United midfielders Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes were overwhelmed and Ferguson conceded they offered little in the way of a re-

Torres opened the scoring in the 65th minute when he got clear of Rio Ferdinand and lashed home a sublime finish. A bad day for United got even worse when Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic, already on a booking, was dismissed for a clear professional foul on Dirk Kuyt – his third successive red card against Liverpool. David Ngog added Liverpool’s second goal in stoppage time and Gary Neville, an unused substitute, appeared to exchange words with home fans near the dugout as United’s frustration boiled over. “All in all Liverpool were the

WE WILL ALWAYS REACT.THAT IS THE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT OUR CLUB. Alex Ferguson better team and created more chances,” Ferguson said. “They deserved their victory. We created few chances. We have let ourselves down with our penetration.

“I think we got caught up in the atmosphere and the wounded animal aspect of it. “Their fans were fanatical and every decision they put the referee under pressure all the time.” Ferguson felt referee Andre Marriner had been unable to cope with the red-hot atmosphere and slammed the official for failing to award a first half penalty for Jamie Carragher’s foul on Michael Carrick. “I felt Carrick in the first half was a penalty and of course the controversial one that everyone will be talking about was when Carragher brought Michael Owen down on the edge of the box,” Ferguson said.

Arsene Wenger admitted his Arsenal side cannot afford to continue to let opponents off the hook after conceding a two-goal lead against second-bottom West Ham in a 2-2 draw here at Upton Park. The Gunners were set to close the gap on secondplaced English champions Manchester United to just one point after Robin van Persie and William Gallas fired the visitors into a firsthalf lead in this all-London clash. But West Ham rallied to claim a draw thanks to second-half goals from Carlton Cole and Alessandro Diamanti and, having seen his side concede a late equaliser in the Champions League clash with AZ Alkmaar last week, the Frenchman admitted his side have work to do. “We were in control but as long as you don’t score the third goal the game is not won,” said Arsenal manager Wenger. “In fairness West ham did continue to fight until the last minute and we conceded two goals from two set pieces. Generous ones. “We are an intelligent team and an intelligent team makes the maximum result with the game they produce. That is what we did not do,” he said. “We complicated our game a little bit and had five or six chances in the second-half.” He added: “It is a major missed opportunity of course. You don’t have the luxury to miss opportunities in our job. You need to get points when you deserve to get points and sometimes when you don’t deserve to get the points.”

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez directs his troops.

afa Benitez believes Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United will provide the impetus to get his side’s spluttering title challenge back on track. The win over their bitter rivals eases the pressure on Benitez, who, as Liverpool’s results went from bad to worse over the last month, had come under greater scrutiny that at

any time during his five-year reign. Instead of presiding over Liverpool’s worst spell for 56 years – his fate if United had won – Benitez can now justifiably talk of a brighter future. “We needed to win for the confidence, so I think it will be a big boost for the team,” he said. “All the players didn’t want to lose. They wanted to show

character and this was the perfect response. “It was against a good team so the fans are delighted and then you can see all the players feel the same way. It has to be positive. “Hopefully this will be a turning point. If we can keep the momentum I am sure we have a good team and can win some games in a row. “We need to win against

Arsenal in the League Cup on Wednesday and continue against Fulham on Saturday.” With Steven Gerrard already ruled out with a groin injury, Benitez realised it was worth gambling over Fernando Torres’s fitness. “It was difficult because he was not training much. You could see he was not 100 per cent but sometimes 80 per cent of Fernando can make the difference.”

PENNANT FOR YANKEES New York defeat Angels 5-2 and advance to the World Series AP, New York

T

he New York Yankees won their first pennant in six years yesterday, beating the Los Angeles Angels in the American League championship series to secure a place in baseball’s biggest event. The Yankees won 5-2 in Game 6 of the ALCS behind the savvy pitching of Andy Pettitte and next hosts defending champions Philadelphia in the World Series opener tomorrow night. Cliff Lee is expected to face Yankees ace CC Sabathia in an enticing pitching match-up between former Cleveland teammates – and the past two American League Cy Young Award winners. Ridiculed in the past for his October flops, Alex Rodriguez played a huge role in helping

the Yankees advance through the play-offs, batting .438 with five homers and 12 RBIs. “I couldn’t be more excited,” Rodriguez said. “I feel like a 10year-old kid.” The slugger earned his first trip to the World Series during a 16-year career in which he’s accomplished almost everything else. Pettitte set a post-season record for wins, Johnny Damon hit a two-run single and Mariano Rivera closed it out in familiar fashion with a six-out save as the Yankees won their 40th American League crown by vanquishing the Angels, a long-time nemesis. Now, the Yankees go for their record 27th title – when manager Joe Girardi was hired two years ago, he took jersey No 27 with that in mind. “We’re just trying to enjoy this,” Derek Jeter said. “Hopefully, we can play one more great series.” Not a bad way for Jeter and crew to finish up the first

Since winning their only championship in 2002, the Angels are yet to return to the World Series despite

five AL West titles in the past six years. “At times we played good baseball. At times we shot ourselves in the foot,” Scioscia said. After rain postponed Game 6 for a day, the clear weather and mild temperature at first pitch was a stark change from the first two games of the series.

ational coach Bryan Robson has decided to field his Asian Cup squad in the Phuket Kata Group Cup. The friendly competition, which starts today at Sarakul stadium in Phuket, features four sides: a Thailand XI, newlycrowned Thailand Premier League champions Muang Thong United, Burmese outfit Yadanabon and Hong Anh Gia Lai of Vietnam. Initially the coach thought of fielding players from both the Asian Cup and the SEA Games squads in the Thailand XI. However, after discussions with the coaching staff, the exEngland captain decided to use the players from the Asian Cup squad to prepare them for the forthcoming back-to-back Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore next month.

The reigning Super Bowl champions had not scored two defensive touchdowns in the same quarter since 1995 but the Steelers shut down late Viking marches by forcing mistakes from veteran Favre. “There were a lot of what ifs, a lot of reasons we didn’t win,” Favre said. “The red zone was one of them. They’re physical, and they were as good as we thought they’d be. ... When I came here and looked at our schedule [and saw the Steelers game], I went, ‘Oh-h-h.’” Two other NFL unbeatens in

action stayed perfect. Indianapolis improved to 6-0 with a 42-6 rout at winless St Louis as Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes and New Orleans came from behind to topple Miami 46-34. Pittsburgh improved to 5-2 with a fifth consecutive triumph with some help from fourth quarter blunders by the once-perfect Vikings. A tripping penalty on Minnesota blocker Jeff Dugan wiped out a touchdown for the Vikings and just two plays later, Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel knocked the ball from Favre’s grasp. “It’s easy to look back now and say we should’ve done this or should’ve done that,” Favre said. Woodley grabbed the fumble and raced 77 yards for a touchdown, team-mates blocking out tackle attempts on the runback to give Pittsburgh a 20-10 lead with 6:42 to play.
