Transsexual Miss World calls for greater tolerance
Miss International Queen 2009 Haruna Ai, 37, from Japan is flanked by first runner-up Kangsadal Wongdusadeekul, 21, from Thailand, right, and second runner-up Daniela Marques, 28, from Brazil. Ai, who beat off stiff competition from 20 other contestants from 13 countries, won $10,000 (Bt334, 500), a year’s stay at a Pattaya hotel and a $500 surgical voucher.

eople across the country have geared up to celebrate the world-famous Loy Krathong Festival tonight. During the colourful event, rivers and canals will be glittering with beautiful candlelit floats or krathong just as the night sky comes alive with stunning fireworks under a silvery moon. To add to the spectacular scene, revellers – especially in the North – will also release floating lanterns. “Our Loy Krathong activities will be called the Festival of Yipeng (Floating Lanterns),” says Wilas Panyawong, the chair of the Night Bazaar
Operators Club. The Night Bazaar is an attraction in Chiang Mai.

for greater tolerance as she was crowned the world’s most beautiful transsexual at a pageant in Pattaya. Haruna Ai, 37, beat off stiff competition from 20 other glamorous contestants at the Miss International Queen 2009 who came from as far as Brazil and the United States to the beach resort. “I am very, very, very happy,” a tearful Ai told AFP minutes after the previous title holder carefully placed a faux-diamond tiara on her head. “I want contests like this to show everyone that they should love each other and live freely. The way of life in Japan is more traditional and transsexuals cannot live freely, but in Thailand they can do what they want,” she said. The contest, which was called off last year because of political turmoil in Thailand, is taken just as seriously as more traditional pageants. The statuesque beauties – all of them born men – strutted their stuff at Tiffany’s Show Pattaya, billed as the world’s largest transsexual cabaret. The first round saw them in kitschy national dress. The lights then sank low as the contestants paraded in elegant evening gowns and later modelled pink swimsuits, while giant fluorescent kites soared over the stage. Japan’s Ai won $10,000 (Bt334, 500), a year’s stay at a Pattaya hotel and a $500 surgical voucher after judges picked her over runners-up Karngsadal Wongdusadeekul from Thailand and Daniela Marques of Brazil.

Tourism boost Activities will kick off at 6.30pm today at a square near Thapae Gate. A grand procession featuring elaborate lanterns will then start from there before it moves along Thapae Road, turns right at Uppakut Intersection, goes along Changklan Road or the Night Bazaar, and ends up in front of Pantip Plaza shopping centre. “We believe the activities will boost tourism in the province and provide tourists with a lot of fun,” Wilas adds.
In the other northern province of Lampang, at least 3,500 lanterns will be released into the sky. The floating lanterns are selling like hot cakes in Chiang Rai. Locals there will also float small, decorated vessels on the river and canals. Meanwhile, vendors in
Phitsanulok have reported brisk trade with their environmentally friendly krathong, which are made of cornhusk and coir. The Loy Krathong Festival kicked off on Saturday in Sukhothai, with tourists turning out in large numbers. “We believe the three-day festival will generate a cash flow of more than Bt50 million here,” says Sukhothai Governor Jakkarin Plianwong. The Sukhothai Historical Park provides an impressive setting for Loy Krathong revellers to enjoy themselves. They will feel like the clock has been turned back more than seven centuries. Also, a special krathong from the Royal Family will be floated in Sukhothai as a highlight of the festival there.

Iraqi who runs down daughter jailed in Arizona
No trick: 2,000 kids knock on door of White House It was not your usual night at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Saturday, with the White House lit up pumpkin-orange and thousands of little ghosts and goblins trick-or-treating the president of the United States. Barack Obama’s first Halloween as president saw him dishing out candy and pastries baked by his chef to many of the estimated 2,000 children – many in elaborate costumes – from 11 area schools on the north portico of the White House, as some of his top staff stepped into frightful or fuzzy character. First Lady Michelle Obama by his side – playing her part as a purring Cat Woman clad in a yellow-and-black leopard print top, fuzzy ears and black eyeshadow – Obama stayed in more presidential character, wearing slacks, a checkered shirt and a black sweater. Obama was heard wishing several of the children a simple “Happy Halloween” as he doled out packets of candy and dried fruit bearing the presidential seal. – A F P

Judge orders 3 to trial
in Anna Nicole case He says there’s enough evidence against ex-model’s lawyer-boyfriend, doctor and psychiatrist to try them A P , Los Angeles
T
hree key players in the troubled world of Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith have been ordered to stand trial after a hearing that plumbed the drug-fuelled depths of her final years and the alleged roles of her boyfriend and two doctors in feeding her addiction to prescription drugs. A judge who heard sometimes shocking testimony about the flood of drugs provided to Smith ruled there was sufficient evidence to try the defendants on charges of con-
spiring to give the reality TV star sedatives and opiates. Defence lawyers had argued that her lawyer-boyfriend Howard K Stern, Dr Sandeep Kapoor and psychiatrist Dr Khristine Eroshevich tried desperately to save the doomed model in her waning years, including a period when she gave birth to a daughter and lost her grown son to a drug overdose.
‘Poured pills in her mouth’ One of the last pieces of prosecution evidence intro-
duced was a transcript of an investigator’s interview of a Smith friend who said she saw Stern placing pills in her mouth. “He poured them in her mouth like you would a bird,” Gina Shelley said in the interview. Superior Court Judge Robert J Perry stressed that his ruling required only minimal proof that would cause a reasonable person to suspect the defendants committed the crimes. He dropped one charge that Eroshevich gave Smith placebos, finding there was not sufficient evidence. Smith died of an accidental overdose of at least nine medications in February 2007 at a Florida hotel.
An Iraqi immigrant accused of running down his daughter with his car because she was becoming too “Westernised” was returned to Arizona to face aggravated assault charges. Faleh Almaleki was arrested when he arrived at Atlanta’s airport, sent from the United Kingdom after authorities denied him entrance. He was returned to the Phoenix-area city of Peoria, booked and taken to a county jail. He is accused of striking and then running over his 20-year-old daughter and her boyfriend’s mother with his Jeep on October 20. Noor Almaleki remains hospitalised in serious condition after undergoing spinal surgery. The other woman, Amal Khalaf, is in serious but stable condition.
Hawke praises Madonna Actor Ethan Hawke praised Madonna for her boldness in speaking out against discrimination against Gypsies, words that provoked boos from thousands of fans at her concert in Romania. Hawke, visiting Romania to help promote his mother’s charity supporting education for Gypsy children, placed the pop superstar alongside Bob Marley and John Lennon as part of a tradition of artists speaking out against racism. “She transcended being a pop star,” he told reporters. “She drew international attention and shone the spotlight on a level of racism and the need for greater education.” “I don’t have an agenda, Madonna doesn’t have an agenda. We aren’t politicians,” Hawke said. – AP

AN OSCAR FOR JACKO?
,,
Sony is pitching ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ for Best Picture and other honours at the Academy Awards A P , Los Angeles
S
ony thinks its new Michael Jackson documentary could be a contender for best picture. Spokesman Steve Elzer says the studio will submit “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” for Academy Awards consideration this year. It missed the deadline to be considered for a 2009 documentary Oscar, but the film about the late King of Pop’s preparations for a series of comeback concerts will be eligible in several other categories at the Academy Awards, including sound, film editing, director and best picture. “This Is It” opened worldwide last Wednesday and drew praise from critics and fans, who say it restores Jackson’s reputation as an entertainer. Director Kenny Ortega, a long-time Jackson collaborator who was overseeing his concert comeback, crafted the film from more than 100 hours of footage recorded during rehearsals for the London shows, which were to have begun in July. Jackson died on June 25 at age 50. “What we did here was focus on telling a good story and creating a film for the fans really enabling them to understand what Michael Jackson had dreamed for them,” Ortega says. But he added, “Awards, Oscars – that’s all great wishful thinking.”

‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ is playing in cinemas until November 10.
It could happen It may be more than wishful, says Steven Gaydos, executive editor of the Hollywood trade paper Variety and a self-described cynic. With the Academy Awards best-picture slate expanded to 10 films this
WHAT WE DID HERE WAS FOCUS ON TELLING A GOOD STORY AND CREATING A FILM FOR THE FANS ...TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MICHAEL JACKSON HAD DREAMED FOR THEM. Kenny Ortega, director year rather than the traditional five, “This Is It” could find itself among the contenders, he says. To qualify, the film must complete a seven-day run in Los Angeles County and filmmakers would need to “submit the proper paperwork”, says Leslie Unger of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Elzer says Sony will submit the Jackson film for consideration for best picture “and other appropriate categories”. The movie’s music is not eligible for Oscar consideration because it wasn’t created specifically for the film. But Ortega could find himself in contention for a best-director nod, Gaydos says. “He did a masterful job.”

he fourth Honda Winter Festival on November 28 promises a relaxing, if frosty, outing to the Bonanza Khao Yai Hotel’s Greenfield site, with plenty of music bouncing off the hills of lower Nakhon Ratchasima. “It seems like the cold weather has come earlier this year,” sneezes Vinij Lertratanachai, chief executive of the Fresh Air Festival, which is organising the Honda event. So he wants everyone to sit close together – romantic and, yes, warm – and sing along with the more than 30 bands he’s lined up. You’ll need to know the lyrics to songs by ETC, Palmy, Moderndog, Joey Boy, Buddha Bless, Scrubb, Friday, Jetsetter, Yong-Koi, Noi Pru, Mint Maleewal, Panadda Ruangwut, Tik Shiro and Kob Songsith. And also the music of Charas Fueang-arom, Pingpong Sirasak, Surasee Itthikul, Waen Thitima, Pan Paibulkierti, Pramote Vilepana, In Budokan, Oui Rawiwan, Ford Sobchai, Paew Napada, Aoo Tannatonn, Oak Smith, Ruj The Star, Dan Worrawech, First Slot Machine, Waan Thanakrit, Padcha, Girly Berry, Four Mod, Mint Athawadee and Jui Juis. If your bum is still freezing, get up and move around. There’s a “zoo” to look at – crocodile, elephant, panda, tiger and friends all made of recycled paper – and a field of windmills too. “We will be together amid fantastic nature,” says Phithak Phrukthisarikhon of Honda Automobile (Thailand). “We’ll have 5,000 boxes of seeds for different kids of trees that we’ll distribute so people can plant them at home.”

Rudklao Amratisha is undoubtedly the brightest star onstage in the musical “Lom Hai Jai” (“Breath”), continuing until November 22 at the Ratchadalai Theatre. She’s appeared in many stage plays, but this Rudklao musical offers her another level on which to show off her terrific acting chops. Rudklao is probably the only performer seen in productions by both Scenario and Dreambox – “Khang Lhang Phap” for the first and “Koo Karma the Musical” and “Mae Nak” for the latter. Can she top that? Yep. Earlier this year she received a master’s degree in interpreting – she speaks several languages.

England’s Ross Fisher led American Anthony Kim by one after the morning round of their 36-hole Volvo World Match Play final in Spain. But it could have been better for the 28-year-old. After his opponent three-putted the 568-yard 18th for par Fisher did the same. The Wentworth golfer took the lead on four separate occasions, but could never double it. Kim levelled with birdies on the seventh, ninth and 13th, but fell behind again by bogeying the 464-yard 16th. In the 18-hole third-place playoff, meanwhile, Australian Robert Allenby holed-in-one with a 230-yard five-wood at the sixth, but had to birdie the last to take the game into sudden death. – Agencies

Cristiano Ronaldo at a photocall of Castrol, which is launching a 12-month ranking of players from top 5 leagues.
GIVE US THE TIME Ronaldo wants patience from Real fans and players AP, Madrid
C
ristiano Ronaldo wants patience, both from his Real Madrid team-mates and the Spanish club’s demanding fans. The Portugal winger, who moved to Madrid from Manchester United in the offseason, has scored nine goals in seven appearances – all wins – since leaving England. But an ankle injury has recently forced him to the sidelines, where he has been watching his star-studded team struggle. “I’ve already missed some games to injury but it’s not like I’m the saviour,” Ronaldo said in an interview. “I’m just a player that will give to help the team to win, but the team needs to work. I think things will improve.” Ronaldo has missed Madrid’s past six games, one of those being a 4-0 loss at Alcorcon in the first leg of the fourth round of the Copa del Rey. That result put the pressure on coach Manuel Pellegrini, who has pleaded for more time. But how much more time can
be given to a team that spent more than US$365 million in the off-season for players such as Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso? “I don’t know, only time will tell,” Ronaldo said in Spanish. “I can’t say to you tomorrow, or after a month. I just hope it’s as quickly as possible because if not we’ll lose games or points and that’s not good for the club or for us the players, either. “It’s difficult when we lose a game, or another with a little pressure, but that’s normal and it’s a club that’s used to it and players should be ready for that.” The biggest factor for the early season sluggishness, Ronaldo believes, is the return of Madrid president Florentino Perez and his purchase of several new players. “It’s a club where you can’t learn, you have to be ready when you arrive here and us players have to give our best to continue improving,” Ronaldo said. “I’m certain – 100 per cent certain – that the team will reach a high level, but that takes time.” In the Spanish League, Madrid trail defending champions
Barcelona by one point and Ronaldo believes the difference in experience has much to do with their contrasting starts. “We know if we get better we’ll reach a good level and we’ll be able to fight against [Barcelona], who have a clear base foundation of great players who go out playing the same way with the same difference,” he said. “Madrid is not like that. But, little by little, I’m confident the team will improve and we will play well. I’m sure of that.” Lionel Messi is one of Barcelona’s best players, and the Argentina forward is the clear favourite to take Ronaldo’s Golden Ball and Fifa Player of the Year titles away after helping his team become the first Spanish club to win three major trophies in a season. Ronaldo said Barcelona’s never-changing system is the main reason for that. “He’s got a great team at his back and it’s a lot easier when you have so many great players of quality around you,” Ronaldo said. “When you play in a team under construction, it’s much more difficult and Barca has a team that for many years has been great.”
disastrous stoppage-time own goal by Gerard Pique denied Barcelona the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Osasuna on Saturday as the champions saw their lead over Real Madrid cut to a single point. Barca looked poised to win in Pamplona after Seydou Keita followed up his hat-trick against Real Zaragoza last weekend with a 73rd-minute strike but with seconds left former Manchester United man Pique diverted a cross into his own net for a Halloween howler. “Gerard [Pique] tried to clear the danger and almost did but it ended up in the net,” lamented Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. “It is frustrating especially as it was so late in the game but these things can happen.” On the domestic front unbeaten Barca stay top, though, 10-men Real closed in with a 2-0 home win over Getafe courtesy of a brace from Gonzalo Higuain. Real bounced back from their mid-week King’s Cup shambles against Alcorcon by defeating their derby rivals despite playing almost three quarters of the match with ten men. Sevilla stayed in touch with the leading duo by winning 20 at Xerez. Elsewhere, new Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores got off to a losing start on his league bow falling 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
Napoli stun Juventus Napoli fought back from a two-goal deficit for the second time in three days to shock Juventus 3-2 in Turin on Saturday and prevent Ciro Ferrara’s team from closing the gap on leaders Inter Milan. Marco Borriello scored a brace as improving AC Milan moved up to fourth with a 2-0 defeat of newly-promoted Parma, who dropped to sixth.

RED DEVILS ON COURSE Blues in Fergie’s sights as Man United eye top spot AFP, Manchester, England
ir Alex Ferguson turned his attention to next weekend’s clash with Chelsea after a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers left his champions two points behind the Premier League leaders. United looked well below par before seeing off a stubborn Blackburn side at Old Trafford on Saturday thanks to expert finishes from Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney. But, as he has said repeatedly in recent weeks, Ferguson bristled at suggestions United are still struggling to find the form that has taken them to the last two European Champions’ League finals and the last three Premier League titles. As far as the veteran Scottish boss was concerned, United were on course. “The good thing about this club is we’re experienced enough to know how difficult it is to win this league,” said Ferguson. “It’s not going to be any different this year. “We know mistakes are going to happen, we know you lose games you don’t expect to lose but you go for the consistency and hope to carry on with that consistency. If we get to January and we’re still in there then we will have a great chance.” United are currently battling with a number of injuries ahead of next weekend’s meeting with Chelsea with Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand both ruled out of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with CSKA Moscow. Nemanja Vidic also sat out the Blackburn match, leaving

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring against Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford. Ferguson fielding an unfamiliar pairing of Jonny Evans and Wes Brown in the heart of the defence. “A lot was made about Ferdinand and Vidic being out today [Saturday],” said Ferguson. “But when you have Wes Brown and Jonny Evans as back-up, you’re not doing bad. “If you take Ferdinand and Vidic out, then there are not many better pairings in the Premier League than Evans and Brown.” Victory might have been more comfortable for United but there was an astonishing miss from French winger Gabriel Obertan, who had his first taste of Premier League football as a second-half substitute and marked the occasion

yards. “Young Gabby was a bit nervous when he came on,” said Ferguson. “It’s only his second game in seven or eight months so you’ve got to put that in its proper perspective. “But towards the end he started to settle down and did very well. He’s not happy with himself for that miss so that’s a good sign.” Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce, meanwhile, claimed his team should have been awarded a 91st minute goal that was ruled out by the linesman for offside, after substitute Nikola Kalinic converted a saved Benni McCarthy shot. Replays did prove Kalinic was in an onside position when the initial strike was made.
Blues excite manager Ancelotti Carlo Ancelotti said he was thrilled by Chelsea’s response to their early-season setbacks after a 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers left them two points clear at the top of the Premier League table. The Blues lost back to back away league games against Wigan and Aston Villa to raise doubts about whether they were genuine challengers for the title. But they have responded to the 2-1 loss at Villa with four straight wins, including 17 goals and four clean sheets. Ancelotti’s team now have a trip to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League ahead of a crucial game against Premier League champions Manchester United. And although Ancelotti insisted he was not looking beyond the game in Spain, he was pleased with the way the Londoners have bounced back in the league. “It was our aim to stay top and we maintained the two points lead before this game and now we have to think about Atletico Madrid and prepare for a fantastic match against Manchester United,” said Ancelotti after Chelsea made it eight goals in a matter of days against Bolton after a 4-0 midweek League Cup win. “Usually people think about the game against Manchester United but we have another important game during the week and we want to prepare well,” the Italian manager explained. “We have time to prepare for Manchester United but it’s very easy to prepare for this game.”

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez leaves after the defeat.
iverpool manager Rafa Benitez admits he has plenty of thinking to do after an already troubled season took another turn for the worse with a 3-1 defeat by Fulham here at Craven Cottage. Saturday’s setback was Liverpool’s fifth reverse in just 11 Premier League fixtures and they trail leaders Chelsea by nine points, with champions
Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all ahead of them in the table. Benitez also has Champions League qualification to secure and cannot afford another defeat on Wednesday away to French club Lyon, who earlier in the competition won 2-1 at Anfield. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, the undisputed top talents in his squad, are both
struggling for fitness so Benitez is not short of problems. “In football you have to keep calm and try to find solutions,” the Spaniard insisted. “We have to think about what we have to do now. We have too many injuries and I have to analyse how many players I have available.” Benitez attempted to justify his decision to rest Torres on the grounds a similar policy had worked last week against
Manchester United, when he scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory. “We decided to play Fernando against United and that was difficult because he was not 100 per cent fit. Afterwards he needed four days to recover,” explained the manager. “I took him off because we don’t want to lose an important player like Fernando for one month.”

lex Rodriguez homered to break his slump with help from a historic video replay and the New York Yankees pounded Philadelphia 8-5 yesterday to seize the lead of the 105th World Series. Hideki Matsui and Nick Swisher added solo homers while winning pitcher Andy Pettitte helped his cause with a run-scoring single as the Yankees took a 2-1 edge in Major League Baseball’s bestof-seven final that continues today. “This was a big win for us. We feel real good about being up 2-1,” Pettitte said. “Not try-
ing to sound too overconfident or arrogant, but even when we lost the first game we feel like we have a really strong team.” The Yankees, best in the major leagues this season at comeback victories with 51, rallied from an early 3-0 deficit for their seventh come-from-behind triumph in nine play-off wins, moving two triumphs from a 27th championship. “If we’re going to get going, it’s time for us to do it,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. Rodriguez and Pettitte were each heckled with “You took steroids” chants from supporters of the defending champions Phillies after admissions early

Alex Rodriguez this year of long-ago drug taking. Each responded with onfield heroics.
“A-Rod”, who was 0-for-8 in his first World Series, blasted a two-run homer off a television camera that was ruled a double but overturned for the first Yankee runs in the first video review during a major league play-off game. “It was a big hit. It woke our offence up a little bit,” Rodriguez said. “It was a little weird to have the first home run and the replay. I’m just glad we got a good ruling.” Pettitte, who has helped the Yankees to four titles, struck out seven but the 37-year-old southpaw gave up four runs on five hits, two of them homers by Jayson Werth, and grinded out a victory despite accuracy
problems. “I can’t remember winning a game where I’ve struggled like I did tonight,” Pettitte said. “It’s very gratifying to be able to go out there and battle through it.” Swisher homered in the sixth, Jorge Posada hit a run-scoring single in the seventh and Japan’s Matsui, a designated hitter forced into a pinch-hit role, homered in the eighth for the Yankees. Philadelphia’s Carlos Ruiz belted a solo homer in the ninth but Yankee ace closer Mariano Rivera, matching 1950s Yankee legend Whitey Ford with a record 22nd Series appearance, induced the final two outs to secure the victory.
S Korea’s Suh wins in China
Yuvraj and Dhoni steer India to victory
After five years in professional golf, South Korea’s Suh Bo-mi ended her title drought by winning the US$300,000 SuzhouTaihu Ladies Open yesterday. Her winning result was only confirmed at the 18th green where she needed a birdie to win outright. A par would have meant that she would have to play off with Gwladys Nocera as both players would have finished the 54-hole championship with a 5-under total. Suh, who eagled the par-5, 18th in her second round on Saturday, positioned herself for another eagle putt when she hit her second shot to about 20 feet north of the pin. She had a downhill putt which she nervously tapped and saw the ball roll past the cup to about six feet away. She holed the birdie putt to win her maiden title. – A F P

uvraj Singh and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit impressive half-centuries to steer India to a six-wicket victory in the third one-day international against Australia on Saturday. Yuvraj top-scored with 78 while Dhoni hit an unbeaten 71 as India surpassed the 230-run target with 10 balls to spare in the day-night encounter at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium. The duo put on 148 runs for the fourth wicket off 173 balls on a challenging track to pull India out of trouble after they were reeling at 53-3 in the 16th over. Yuvraj, named man of the match, smashed eight fours and two sixes in his 96-ball knock before being trapped leg-before by oneday debutant Moises

Dhoni then guided his side to victory and a 2-1 lead in the seven-match series. “India definitely outplayed us today,” Australian captain Ricky Ponting said. “We were in a good position when we reduced them to 53
for 3. We needed to take a couple of wickets in the middle of the innings but Yuvraj and Dhoni were superb. We had our moments but did not capitalise.” Led by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2-41), India’s slow bowlers did well to re-
strict the world champions to 229-5, built around a fine 82ball 81 by middle-order batsman Michael Hussey. Ponting, opening the innings, scored 59 while Shane Watson contributed 41 at the top of the order. “On this wicket, I think everybody bowled well,” said Dhoni. “If there was no dew, 220-230 could have been difficult to chase. “But with Yuvraj at the other end it is always easy. We wanted to play out their best bowlers and go after their parttimers. All in all, it was a great team effort.” Australia began their defence on a promising note, dismissing Virender Sehwag (11), Sachin Tendulkar (32) and Gautam Gambhir (six) inside 16 overs but lost their way thereafter.

CHOI JOY IN KOREA Choi Na-Yeon fired a final round 67 to win the USLPGA Hana Bank Kolon Championship by a stroke from Yani Tseng and Maria Hjorth. Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter won his first European Tour event in three years yesterday when he rode his luck to clinch the Barclays Singapore Open by a shot from China’s Liang Wenchong. The Englishman, colour-coordinated in pink shoes, trousers and shirt, played a gruelling 30 holes in the weather-affected tournament, cosanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, and it was a topsy-turvy ride. He had seen a five-stroke halfway lead wiped out in just six holes of his third round on Saturday after paying the price for an aggressive approach before a thunderstorm halted play. But he returned yesterday morning to complete the round and carded five birdies against two bogeys to remain on course for victory, one head of Ryder Cup team-mate Graeme McDowell. Poulter stretched that lead to two shots by the sixth hole but four bogeys in the next six saw him one behind the Irishman. The pressure, though, got to McDowell, and three consecutive bogeys allowed Poulter to regain the lead and he hung on, claiming his first European win since the Madrid Masters in 2006 with a 10-under-par 274. “I missed some shots but that made it interesting,” said Poulter, whose victory will push him up towards the world’s top 10. “It was too close for comfort but I am happy to get there.” He said the run of bogeys that almost blew his chance was frustrating but he used them to his advantage. “I was getting angry,” he said. “I played so well in spurts and let easy holes slip. I felt I had to do something and I did.” Poulter now heads to Shanghai for the WGCHSBC Champions and is confident of carrying over his form against Tiger Woods and a world-class field. “I’m really looking forward to Shanghai. I haven’t been in the winners’ circle for a few years and it’s really nice to get back.” Liang proved to be his closest challenger with the former Asian number one finishing with a 70 for his best showing in Singapore since he was fourth in 2006. Liang was happy with his week, despite missing out on the title. “There are no regrets. Golf is like that. I have to accept how I played,” said China’s top player, who moved up to second on the Asian Order of Merit behind Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.
