Anyone interested in seeing the sky raining stars is advised to prepare themselves just before midnight on the 17th. “If the sky is clear, we will see more than 100 meteors streaming down as the clock ticks past midnight,” National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand official Suparerk Karuhanont said yesterday. The spectacular Leonid meteor shower will be visible to the naked eye, he added. “The Leonids will be more clearly visible at locations with the least electric lighting,” Suparerk said. “But for a closer look, bring along binoculars with 7x to10x magnifying power”. Beaches, mountains and other locations away from the light pollution of big cities will offer the best views. “Stargazers should spend at least 15 minutes in the darkness before the meteor shower comes,” Suparerk advised. He said clear skies would present a memorable scene. “In addition to the meteor shower, sky watchers will be able to see several star clusters including the Pleiades.

‘Slumdog’ stars bunk class, may lose cash Two child stars from the Oscarwinning film “Slumdog Millionaire” may lose their monthly allowance unless they improve their school attendance. Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali – who played younger versions of the main characters in the ragsto-riches blockbuster – have been told to stop skipping class in Mumbai or forfeit a $120 (Bt4,000) per month payment, NDTV news reported. The money comes from the Jai Ho Trust, which was established by the movie’s British director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson to manage the children’s interests. Said Ismail, 11: “My father died and I had to go through the rituals so I couldn’t attend.” Ali, 10, gave a similar excuse, telling the network, “I had hurt my foot with a glass shard and got burnt with a cracker. So I was not going to school.” – A F P
SCIENTISTS MAP
GENOME OF PIG Achievement will lead to insights in agriculture, medicine, conservation, evolution and a more effective vaccine for type-A (H1N1) flu A F P , Washington
A
n international team of scientists announced yesterday that it had produced a first draft of the genome of a domesticated pig, an achievement that researchers say will lead to insights in agriculture, medicine, conservation and evolution and even a new, more effective vaccine for type-A (H1N1) flu. A red-haired Duroc pig from a farm at the University of Illinois was used in the experiment.
The Duroc is one of five major breeds used in pork production around the world and is one of about 200 breeds of domesticated pigs.
‘Unique animal’ “The pig is a unique animal that is important for food and that is used as an animal model for human disease,” said Larry Schook, a University of Illinois professor and leader of the sequencing project. “And because the native wild animals are still in exis-
tence, it is a really exciting animal to look at to learn about the genomic effects of domestication,” he added. The draft sequence will allow researchers to pinpoint genes that are useful to pork production. The researchers said their work will enhance breeding practices, offer insight into diseases that afflict pigs and will assist in efforts to preserve the global heritage of rare, endangered and wild pigs. It also will be important for the study of human health because pigs are very similar to humans in their physiology, behaviour and nutritional needs, they added.
Body odour, boring pyjamas and lacklustre sex have been blamed for the high divorce rate in Malaysia’s northeastern state of Terengganu. Couples who had been married for less than five years and were on the verge of separation told marriage counsellors that predictable sex and body odour were some of the main reasons for their break-up. “I know of one case where a separation was triggered just because the spouse smelled of fish crackers,” said Muhammad Ramli Nuh, the deputy chairman of the state religious and information committee. Muhammad Ramli told The Star daily that at least three in every 10 marriages in the state ended in divorce, adding that the government was now finding innovative ways to perk up the sex lives of married couples. Top of its list is inviting cosmetics firms to introduce “exotic and sensuous fragrances that can arouse sexual desire” in married couples. The government also plans to hold grooming workshops for husbands and wives, adding that marriage consultants will advise couples on the right lingerie to be worn at intimate moments. – DPA

he world’s largest cruise ship cleared a crucial obstacle on Sunday, lowering its smokestacks to squeeze under a bridge in Denmark. The Oasis of the Seas – which rises about 20 storeys high – passed below the Great Belt Fixed Link with a slim margin as it left the Baltic Sea on its maiden voyage to Florida. Bridge operators said that even after lowering its telescopic smokestacks the giant ship had less than a half-metre gap.

The Oasis of the Seas, the most expensive and largest cruise ship ever built, leaves the STX shipyard in Turku, Finland, for its maiden voyage on Friday. Hundreds of people gathered on beaches at both ends of the bridge, waiting for hours to watch the brightly lit behemoth sail by shortly after midnight.
“It was fantastic to see it glide under the bridge. Boy, it was big,” said Kurt Hal, 56. Company officials are banking that its novelty will help guarantee its success. Five
times larger than the Titanic, the US$1.5-billion (Bt50.17-billion) ship has seven neighbourhoods, an ice rink, a small golf course and a 750-seat outdoor amphitheatre. It has 2,700
cabins and can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members. Accommodations include loft cabins with floor-to-ceiling windows, and luxury suites with balconies overlooking the sea or promenades. The liner also has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children.

resh from performing the title character in 12 Inch Theatre’s “Carmen” last month, dancer and choreographer Meuanphun “Orn” Ampunsang has invited some “Carmen” pals to join students from her Point Studio, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary, for her new production titled “Phun” (“Dream”). “The English title is written ‘Fun+’ and it’s pronounced ‘Fun Plus’,” she says. “It’s a good opportunity for the students, who’ve been rehearsing for the past three months, to work with professionals and to perform for the public. We’ve quite a big cast too – 28 members. “It’s been my dream to stage a full-scale dance performance. The story is about a child from upcountry who wishes to become a professional dancer in Bangkok. “The first act is called ‘Urban Dwellers’, and we’ll show a wide variety of city people. Some strive for a better future while others yearn for new experiences. They face different obstacles and hardships, which give them strength to carry on. “In the second act, ‘Those Who Are Forgotten,’ the tone is darker, as we show characters most of us do not care about – beggars, for example.
“The final act, ‘Forever Dreams Come True’, shows different aspects of love, including homosexuality, and questions whether we want to love, to be loved and to feel love. “In each act, there are various styles of dance, ranging from classical ballet, to jazz, contemporary and hip-hop – all new choreography by myself plus a scene called ‘Garbage’ by guest choreographer Peeramon Chomdhavat, who’s also an artistic adviser for this performance. Given this variety, it’s my job to make sure that everyone and everything is unified choreographically and emotionally.”
Swiss in the mix The music is composed by Swiss jazz pianist Francois Lindemanne, who was part of the “Piano Seven” seen during Bangkok’s Festival of Dance and Music a few years ago. Orn says that he’ll also perform some of his compositions live. “We’ll evaluate the feedback and if it’s good then we may decide to stage this kind of charity performance annually.” Profits from ticket sales will be donated to the Sutasinee Noi-in Foundation (Baan Home Hug). “It’s a small charity that’s making a big impact in helping HIV-infected children,” says Orn.

2 brought three generations of chart-toppers – Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and the Black Eyed Peas – with them onstage last Friday at another night of mix and match magic at Madison Square Garden. Metallica brought the thunder to Lou Reed and Ray Davies. It was the second of two concerts to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they will be edited into a television special for HBO. During U2’s set, Bono was waxing poetic about the spiritual, physical and political power of rock ’n’ roll until finally the Boss had had enough. “Let’s have some fun with it,” Springsteen said. They performed U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, with Bono and Springsteen trading call-and-response vocals during the final verse.
U2 topped the bill for the four hours of music. True to the spirit of Rock Hall events, producers sought some unusual pairings for artists to pay tribute to influences: Annie Lennox and Lenny Kravitz joined Aretha Franklin onstage, and Sting popped up to sing “People Get Ready” with Jeff Beck. Jagger, who sang “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” with U2, also danced a duet with the Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie on “Gimme Shelter”. Just to show music’s finest aren’t perfect: U2, Springsteen and Patti Smith needed a doover when they mangled “Because the Night”. Metallica paid tribute to influences by playing songs by Bob Seger and Queen. Frontman James Hetfield noted the band’s trepidation when Rock Hall officials suggested artists to share the stage with. “We’re not the most jammy

His first football outing, in a match against foreign diplomats, brought a hat trick, and so did last Sunday’s face-off between the government coalition parties and the Senate, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Lou Reed had a muscular backing for “Sweet Jane” and Ray Davies had the type of riffage he hadn’t seen since the Kinks on “You Really Got Me” and “All Day and All of the Night”. Jerry Lee Lewis began the show with his hit “Great Balls of Fire”, and at the end slowly pushed over his piano stool.

Bridgestone to quit F1 in late 2010

Japanese tyre maker Bridgestone Corp said yesterday it would quit Formula One next year, dealing a further blow to the sport after the recent withdrawal of other high-profile firms amid the global downturn. Bridgestone said it would end its contract as the official tyre supplier to the FIA, raising questions over who would replace it after French rival Michelin pulled out in 2006 and US maker Goodyear left in 1998. Bridgestone has supplied tyres to F1 for 13 years and has been the exclusive supplier to the series since 2007. Its current contract expires at the end of the 2010 season. – AFP

Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull celebrates his victory on the podium at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
VETTEL BULLISH German revels in fourth win of the season at Abu Dhabi AFP, Abu Dhabi
T
he broad smile of Sebastian Vettel and his easy sense of humour signalled on Sunday that he is ready for the future after claiming an historic triumph in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. As the 22-year-old German sat between his “senior” colleagues, newly-claimed world champion Briton Jenson Button and Australian Mark Webber at the post-race news conference, he could barely stop himself laughing. Vettel, delighted to have led his Red Bull team-mate Webber home in a famous one-two victory, revelled in his win and in his repeated joke about Button’s impending, but denied, wedding plans. “Now Seb, that’s enough – I am trying to talk,” said the 29year-old Englishman after Vettel had interrupted him, with the same joke, for at least the third time. Clearly at home among his peers, and clearly full of confi-
dence and natural talent, Vettel raced and talked with the composure of a future champion. On the track, he had dominated the race once Briton Lewis Hamilton, the pole-sitter, had been forced to retire, after 20 of the 55 laps, with gearbox problems. Vettel, who started second, then took over and drove to the flag in flawless style. It was his fourth win of the season and the fifth of his career, confirming him as runner-up in the drivers’ title race. “That was a fantastic race. We had a very good launch, a good start. It was not enough to out-accelerate Lewis but it was close! I was surprised,” said Vettel. “Then going on the long back straight he pushed the [KERS] button and that was it, he disappeared into the distance. I was able to stay close, we knew we were heavier but I was able to keep with him. There was a lot of pressure in the pit-stops. “After that he retired, but it was a fantastic race. I had a gap to Jenson and Mark behind so I was able to pace myself, but the car was fantastic on both tyres. It was a pleasure to sit in the car tonight. To sum up the season, it
is up and down. The second-half we have been very strong – this is the fourth 1-2 for Red Bull, so congratulations to the team. They have been pushing a lot, working a lot. “It is a perfect way to finish the season on a high.” He admitted he was proud to have secured the runner-up spot. “I am very proud. Obviously, I think there was a misunderstanding in Brazil where I didn’t have the chance, so congratulations to Brawn and Button. “After Brazil, coming here we knew we had a very, very strong package and the priority number one was to secure second in the drivers’ championship, and we succeeded. To do it with victory is the best possible result.” Vettel, whose team was the strongest in the second half of the season, is now hoping Red Bull can keep their momentum going and fight at the front of the field again in 2010. “It would be very good to continue like that,” he said. “Now we face a long winter, especially for all us drivers! There’s a long break with no testing: but back in England, back in the factory, the guys are pushing very hard.”
he Phuket Thailand Open, powered by PTT and starting tomorrow at Karon Beach, promises to be the biggest beach volleyball competition ever held in Asia. Tournament director Geoffrey Rowe said the number of players in the tournament, the last stop of the Swatch FIVB World Tour 2009, has increased by 40 per cent from last year. More than 80 teams from 30 countries have confirmed their participation. “The live broadcast will also reach around 2.3 billion households worldwide. Those who will come to cheer their favourite teams at the venue can participate in various activities at the fun booths provided by sponsors,” Rowe said. “It’s an excellent mixture of sport and entertainment. I hope the spectators will enjoy every moment at Karon Beach.” Among the star spikers are world champions April Ross and Jennifer Kessy-Boss from the USA, who will be back to defend their title. Fast-improving Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr, who entered the Swatch FIVB World Tour record books on Sunday by becoming the first women’s team from Switzerland to win an international “open” beach volleyball gold medal, in the Sanya Open in China, are the pair to watch this time, Top players from Germany, Netherlands, Greece, China, Italy, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Czech Republic and Norway will also join the fray in the top-flight tournament, with an attractive US$190,000 at stake. Two matches will be contested in the country quota play-off today.

pack. “Having Didier back in the Champions League this week will be great for us. It’s a big boost, he’s a top-class player in great form,” the England midfielder said, dubbing Drogba the best striker in the world. “He’s neck and neck with Fernando Torres in the goals chart, but for me Didier is the best in the world because of his all-round game.” Nine-times champions Real Madrid should ultimately emerge from Group C even if AC Milan, with seven titles, complete the double today over the expensively reconstituted “Meringues” at the San Siro. Both sides have six points from three games but Real will
again be without the world’s most expensive player Cristiano Ronaldo as he has not recovered from a nagging right ankle injury. Veteran midfielder Guti will also miss the game after falling out with coach Manuel Pellegrini during last week’s humiliating 4-0 Spanish Cup defeat at third division Alcorcon. Assuming Milan – already shocked at home to Zurich before redeeming themselves in Madrid – qualify along with the Spanish giants, whose last crown came in 2002, that would mean the end of the road for Marseille, the 1993 champions, who should nonetheless beat Zurich at the Stade Velodrome.

ompared to the domestic and European woes of fivetimes European kings Liverpool, life is bliss for Manchester United and Chelsea as Premier League glory and the knockout phase of the Champions League beckon. Liverpool, six defeats in seven games, have run into a brick wall in the Premier League where a first title in 20 years already looks beyond them. Failure to win at Lyon tomorrow could derail their Champions League ambitions after defeats to the French side and also Fiorentina. Meanwhile it’s been relatively plain sailing for United and Chelsea, both at home and abroad. Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2008 European champions are just two points off the Blues in the league while in Europe both sides have posted three wins already. Despite veterans Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand both being ruled out of today’s game United will expect to polish off rivals CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford having already secured full points in Moscow. Chelsea, having already humiliated Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge, will be confident they can get the point they need to advance from Group D, particularly with Didier Drogba having completed the threematch ban imposed for an onpitch outburst after last season’s semi-final loss to Barcelona. Serena Williams won her second career WTA Championships title yesterday with a commanding 6-2 7-6 (7/4) victory over sister Venus, a triumph which earned her a cool US$1.55 million. Serena, who will finish the season as world No 1, also won the trophy in 2001, making her only the second player, after Justine Henin in 2007, to capture two Grand Slam titles and the WTA Championship in the same year. Serena won all five matches at this event, including a group-stage win over defending champion Venus, and such was her dominance in Sunday’s final that she gave up just seven points on serve. The 85-minute romp was her 13th victory in 23 meetings with her sister, a family rivalry stretching back to 1998. “It feels fantastic. I definitely wasn’t expecting to win when I came here because I hadn’t been practicing very well,” said Serena. “I kept fighting against a really tough player but Venus kept hitting the ball back. That’s never easy and it’s really frustrating.” Venus, who also lost her Wimbledon title to Serena this year, said she did all she could in the final. “I gave 100 per cent. It’s the end of the season. It’s been a good week and I have no complaints. Serena played a great match. She didn’t make many errors,” said Venus. With the last of her 41 career titles coming nine months ago, it will be little consolation for the 29-yearold that she will end 2009 at six in the world, up from seven.

Ross Fisher after winning the World Match Play.
oss Fisher won the 36-hole World Match Play Championship final on Sunday with a convincing 4 and 3 victory over Anthony Kim. Fisher had an eagle at the par-4 22nd hole and birdie at the par-5 23rd to put him 3-up at the Finca Cortesin golf course. Kim won the next hole but then missed putts on the 25th and 26th holes. Kim later missed
several hole-winning putts down the stretch. “Fortunately the putter finally got a little bit hot,” said Fisher, who became the fourth Englishman to win the event. “It was slow to get going but when I needed some crucial putts there were some really good putts I holed today.” Fisher, who was sharp around the greens early in the day, never trailed his American oppo-
nent as the first 18 holes were played in cool, overcast conditions before the sun came out in the afternoon. “It was tough. This course is very demanding, not only mentally but physically,” said Fisher, whose 126 holes completed included a playoff against Masters champion Angel Cabrera on Saturday. “Fitness was probably a big aspect.” Kim tried to rally on the sec-
ond 18, putting his drive within 15 feet on the 24th hole and then making the birdie putt, but he couldn’t hold it together around the greens, lipping out from about a foot on the 26th. Trailing by three holes with eight to play, Kim just couldn’t get his putter rolling. “It was an up-and-down battle all day and I never seemed to get anything going. That’s what cost me today,” Kim said.

Karlsson admits he was stung by his team’s defeat in last year’s edition and wants to see Europe’s best players come together to do battle in Thailand. “I want to make sure we are fully prepared for the fourth edition of the Royal Trophy as we need to re-assert ourselves as the strongest team in world golf,” said Karlsson. “The upcoming event is very important for us – especially as we will be playing under Seve Ballesteros, as European captain. The Yankees, whose 201 million-dollar payroll is baseball’s largest, have not won a World Series crown since 2000 but are on the verge of extending their record all-time title run, already the greatest success mark in American sport. “We haven’t accomplished anything yet,” Damon said. “We’ve won three games. That’s not what we set out to do. We would like the fourth.” New York can claim the crown by winning game five today when southpaw pitcher Cliff Lee, Philadelphia’s game

They are going to come out fighting and so are we.” Teams with a 3-1 edge have won the World Series 34 of 40 times, the most recent failure being when St Louis dropped the last three games to Kansas City to lose the 1985 Series. Chase Utley blasted a solo homer in the seventh inning and Pedro Feliz added another in the eighth to pull the Phillies even at 4-4, setting the stage for the Yankees’ dramatic ninth inning against relief pitcher Brad Lidge.
One strike from ending the inning, Lidge surrendered a single to Damon and were undone when he stole second base, then raced to third on the play, Lidge and catcher Carlos Ruiz having failed to protect the base to deny Damon. “There was some miscommunication,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “That’s the first time we’ve had it happen to us this year.” Damon gambled to put himself in prime scoring position. “I have some decent speed. I just went off instinct and fortunately it worked out,” Damon said.
Favre overcomes boos and the Packers AFP, Green Bay, Wisconsin

rett Favre won another big game at Lambeau Field yesterday, but this time it was to the dismay of Packers fans who once idolised him. The iconic quarterback led Minnesota to a 38-26 National Football League triumph, the Vikings’ second victory over his former team in less than a month. This one came on the hallowed ground of Lambeau Field, where Favre was greeted by lusty boos from his former admirers. Favre remained unruffled by the raucous reception, completing 17 of 28 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns. “Packer fans cheer for the Packers first,” Favre said. “I know that. But I hope that everyone in the stadium watching tonight said, ‘I sure

Vikings defenders pum-
melled Favre’s heir, Aaron Rodgers, sacking him six times. Rodgers responded, producing three second-half touchdowns that prevented a Vikings rout but weren’t enough to secure a victory. Favre departed the field amid a welter of cameras,
pumping his fist to a mix of jeers and cheers. He had been roundly booed during pre-game warm-ups, introductions and every time he took a snap in the early going. But there were also signs of mixed emotions from some fans in the stadium – who paired Vikings and Packers colours or held up signs backing the player who led Green Bay to the playoffs in 11 of 16 seasons with the Packers. Rodgers said he was more concerned with losing to a division foe than to Favre. “I hate losing to whoever’s the quarterback for them,” Rodgers said. Elsewhere, the Indianapolis Colts won their 16th straight regular season game, improving to 7-0 for this season with an 18-14 victory over San Francisco.

STARING AT THE
SACK?
Rafael Benitez is accused of putting success in Europe before Premiership glory.
Liverpool and Ireland legend Ronnie Whelan believes the end of Rafael Benitez’s reign at Anfield is in sight after the club’s stuttering start to the season. Whelan, who won six English titles in his playing days at Anfield, has accused Benitez of putting success in Europe before the club’s quest for Premier League glory. And he believes Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Fulham, which left Liverpool nine points adrift of league leaders Chelsea, could signal the beginning of the end for the Spaniard. “It’s all gone wrong with the manager and he’s shown exactly where his priorities lie,” Whelan told Ireland’s RTE Television “He wants to win the European Cup so he can get a job in Europe. For me, his days have got to be numbered at Liverpool.” Whelan’s criticism was sparked by Benitez’s decision to substitute Fernando Torres after an hour at Craven Cottage because of concern over the groin injury the Spanish striker is carrying. Benitez desperately needs Torres to be fit for tomorow’s Champions League trip to Lyon, where a defeat would probably end Liverpool’s chances of progressing to the group stages. Despite that, Whelan was adamant that Benitez should have kept Torres on the pitch on Saturday. “He’s taken players off who are the only players who are going to give you a chance of winning the game,” he said. “And he drags them all off because he’s got a game on Wednesday. “When I saw the team I thought he’s not bothered about this game. He’s putting all his eggs in one basket and I can’t see why he’s done it.” Benitez defended his decision to withdraw Torres from the fray with the score standing at 1-1, pointing out that there had been a major doubt over whether the striker would play any role in the match. “We will see in the next couple of days how he is going to react to this,” Benitez said. “We knew it was going to be difficult for him to play and we had to decide. “The other day [against Manchester United], he played 80 minutes but needed four days to recover. He still has some problems but we had to decide whether to start with him [at Fulham] or use him from the bench. We decided that it was better to start with him, so he could warm-up properly. It was a difficult decision, as we knew it could be a risk and we might lose him for even more time. I prefer to lose a player for 20 or 30 minutes, not one month.”

Favre welcomed back with boos
Pellegrini’s job on line in Milan match
The boos are still ringing in Brett Favre’s ears after his first game in Green Bay since signing with those hated Minnesota Vikings. From the time he jogged onto the grass at Lambeau Field for pre-game warm-ups until he left four hours later with his arms raised in triumph, he was treated like a traitor, not a man who was revered here for 16 years. >PAGE 27
