Students at Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) 2 School in the Wang Thonglang area of Bangkok plan to take the unwanted water and use it to flush toilet bowls, thus saving resources.

“We’ll run wastewater tubes from washbasins on the upper floors to a wastewater-treatment tank. After being treated, it’ll be released into a greasetrap tank before being stored in another tank, from where it will be used to flush toilets on DAILY

the lower floors,” said Krittaphon Achineethongkham, 15, one of four students from the school who initiated the system.

Tackling water wastage The project arose after a group of students noticed water emptied from washbasins was being wasted and that water used to flush toilets was being used in a wasteful manner.

Krittaphon said he and his friends had already finished a model of their water-reuse system and that the school was preparing to install a full-scale system in its building.

“With our system, waste-

water from washbasins won’t go to waste. Apart from installing it in our school building, we plan to distribute it to people and shopping centres in our community,” he said.

Meanwhile, another project, initiated by students from Chaiyabhumbhakchumphon School, is seeing roofs built from used plastic water bottles, thus reducing rubbish and preserving the environment.

Reusing plastic “It takes about 100 years for plastic to disintegrate, and almost 1,000 plastic bottles of drinking water are used at our school each day. So we thought about how we could make use of the huge numbers instead of throwing them away,” said Teerapong Damkengsuntorn, 17, one of the project’s creators.

Nuntawan Duangpamorn, 16, another of the creators, said they had used more than 1,000 used bottles to build a roof over an announcement board six months ago, costing the school only Bt1,000 for screws.

Involving the community They are asking pupils to give them their empty water bottles so they can build another roof over a pavilion in the grounds.

“We’ll promote our idea to people in the local community, too,” Nuntawan said.

These two examples are among 40 environmental projects to win awards from the Song Bulsook Foundation as part of its “Green Generation” campaign on the theme “I Can Act Green” aimed at young people.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has vowed to prosecute students who resort to brawling. He made it clear in his TV programme “Confident in Thailand with Prime Minister Abhisit”.

Related agencies are trying to adjust the curriculum for students at Pathumwan Institute of Technology and Rajamangala University of Technology's Uthen Thawai campus to make them feel they are all friends and to help them develop a mindset aimed at helping other people.

It was also noted that news reports on the issue could probably influence students to continue brawling.

However, Abhisit insisted that he wouldn’t interfere with the media, but asked them to report the news candidly to avoid stoking the conflict between both academic institutes and to heal divisions in society.

Boy kills boy A police officer’s 12-year-old son accidentally fired a gun, killing his 12-year-old friend in Lampang’s Jaehom district.

Aek (not his real name) and Nonthanan Chankantha had played a computer game at Aek’s house, following which Aek took out his father’s .38 revolver and “playfully” fired at Nonthanan. A bullet hit Nonthanan in the head. He died later.

The police have taken Aek to the Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre in Lampang.

Forty-eight youths from 23 countries roll up their sleeves, dip their feet in a muddy field and get down to planting rice in a real-life experience D A I LY E X P R E S S

t’s not every day that you see 48 youths from 23 countries packed together in a paddy field. But when participants at the Asem Interfaith Cultural Youth Camp started planting rice at the Bhumirak Centre in Nakhon Nayok, some simply refused to stop.

“We’re German, we need to finish this,” joked Michael Schaumann. Alongside him was Vera Keuper, another German who was quietly looking for more space in the paddy field to plant rice.

They weren’t the only ones to jump into the muddy field

and enjoy the activity. The field turned into a tapestry of blondes and brunettes, ranging from those with fair to dark skin. Every one represented different faiths, but all were united in a single activity which has fed the world since the beginning of mankind.

All the participants later tried milling the rice through traditional non-mechanised “machines”, and even went on a vegetable-planting spree.

Michael later explained to the head of the centre, Panya Pulivekin, that this was a rare opportunity to try rice plant-

ing as this was not done in Germany. The participants were taken to the Bhumirak Centre and shown how His Majesty the King’s self-sufficiency economy philosophy is put into action.

“It was really nice to see how mankind can live side by side with nature without harming it,” said Viktorie Miksatkova, a representative from the Czech Republic. Although the most labour intensive part of the camp, the questionnaire re-

vealed that this was one of the participants’ favourite activities of the programme.

The camp – approved at the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting in Beijing and hosted by the Thailand’s Foreign Ministry in cooperation with the Education Ministry, the Culture Ministry and the Office of the Higher Education Commission – brought together 29 foreign participants from 22 countries and 19 Thais in the February 6-12 programme.

Mexico City sets kissing record Mexico City puckered up to set a new record as nearly 40,000 people locked lips in the city centre for the world’s largest group kiss.

Carlos Martinez of Guinness World Records verified the record of 39,897 people who entered the gated kissing area of the city’s Zocalo main square on Valentine’s Day, besting Weston-super-Mare, an English town that set the previous kissing record in 2007.

“We did it! Long live Mexico,” said Mexican singer-actress Susana Zavaleta, who serenaded the crowd before the kiss with the classic Mexican ballad, Besame Mucho, or Kiss Me a Lot – also the name of the event.

The Valentine’s Day kiss was meant to show love at a time when a crackdown against drug traffickers has led to widespread violence across the country.

The giant Zocalo, which can hold 100,000 people, was halffilled as mostly young couples embraced and held one another in a lip lock for 10 seconds.

MAJOR ADVANCE IN FIGHTING AIDS Quest to use transplanted genes to combat HIV gets a big boost A F P , Paris

T

he world’s largest experiment using gene therapy to combat the Aids virus has yielded “a major advance”, demonstrating that the technique is both beneficial and safe, scientists said yesterday.

Data from an advanced phase of the test process confirms that the quest to use transplanted genes to roll back the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is valid, they said.

Doctors led by Ronald Mitsuyasu of the University of California in Los Angeles recruited 74 HIV-infected volunteers for the experiment, whose results are reported on-

line by the journal Nature Medicine.

Half the group were given blood stemcells that had been infiltrated by a crippled virus containing a key gene, while the other were given a harmless lookalike substance.

Effective enzyme The gene encodes something called an RNA enzyme, or ribozyme for short – a small molecule that, like a spanner thrown into a machine, is intended to block HIV from replicating once it infects a cell.

Stemcells are progenitor cells, which means that when they replicate, future genera-

tions of those cells will carry the same genetic code.

The goal was to see whether these novel stemcells, by being shielded from HIV thanks to the ribozyme, would survive the body’s immune defences and whether HIV, denied a haven for reproduction, would retreat.

Forty-eight weeks after the so-called OZ1 experiment began, there was no statistical difference between those who had received the gene and those who were given the placebo.

But at the 100-week mark, there was encouraging news: in the gene group, the viral count was significally lower.

And the count of CD4 cells – immune cells that are depleted

by HIV – was higher.

Ronnie Biggs, Britain’s notorious Great Train Robber, is in hospital with pneumonia.

The 79-year-old has been taken from prison to a nearby hospital in Norwich, eastern England, Michael Biggs said, adding that his father’s health was poor.

Biggs is among Britain’s most notorious criminals, with the Great Train Robbery of 1963 holding legendary status.

“He’s stable but he’s had three strokes, two heart attacks, and his body’s covered in skin cancer. It’s a pretty bad situation he’s in as he cannot speak. It’s a bit pathetic that he’s still in prison,” said the younger Biggs. – AFP

Guns for roses Police in South Carolina gave away roses on Valentine’s Day. All you had to do to get one for your sweetie was turn in a gun.

Hoping to get the weapons off the streets with the “Guns for Roses” programme, authorities gave a free rose and a gift card for an electronics chain store to anyone who turned in a gun.

irector Claudia Llosa’s “The Milk of Sorrow”, a movie that addresses the fears of women abused during Peru’s turbulent recent history, won the Berlin film festival’s top Golden Bear award.

The movie stars Magaly Solier as Fausta, a young woman suffering from a mysterious illness that is said to be transferred through the milk of mothers who were raped or physically abused during Peruvian authorities’ long war against leftist guerrillas.

Silver Bear “This is beautiful ... this is such an honour,” Llosa said after receiving the award on Saturday night. “This is for Peru. This is for our country.”

The festival’s jury grand prize, which comes with a runner-up Silver Bear, was shared by two films.

Argentine director Adrian Biniez’s debut feature “Gigante” tells the story of a supermarket security guard who falls in love with a cleaner, while German director Maren Ade’s “Everyone Else” follows a

couple during a difficult vacation.

Iran’s Asghar Farhadi was chosen as best director for “About Elly”, which looks at thirty-something Iranians’ attitudes to life.

Sotigui Kouyate was named best actor for his part in director Rachid Bouchareb’s “London River”. He plays a French Muslim desperately awaiting news of his son after the 2005 terrorist attacks in London.

Birgit Minichmayr won the best actress honour for her role as half of the awkward couple in “Everyone Else”.

The best script award went to Oren Moverman and Alessandro Camon for “The Messenger”, in which Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster star as US Army officers responsible for informing families about the soldiers’ deaths.

The award for an outstanding artistic contribution went to Gabor Erdely and Tamas Szekely for what the jury called the “sound design” of “Katalin Varga”, from British director Peter Strickland.

Two movies shared the festival’s honour for innovative film-making: Biniez’s “Gigante” and “Sweet Rush”, from Polish veteran Andrzej Wajda.

Croc with huge tusks Imagine meeting a crocodile with huge tusks like those of a wild boar.

Paleontologist Paul Sereno did meet one, or at least the remains of the ancient creature. Sereno calls it boar-croc for its looks, since he hasn’t yet published an article on it with a scientific name.

The University of Chicago researcher found the skull in the Sahara Desert, which many thousands of years ago was moist and supported all sorts of animals, crocodiles and even in the distant past dinosaurs.

Boar-croc doesn’t fit in any known order. It has a crocodile-like snout, but

adds horns and three sets of canine teeth like those of a wild pig adapted for eating meat, he explained.

Once heralded as the answer to oil, biofuels have become increasingly controversial because of their impact on food prices and the amount of energy it takes to produce them.

More carbon dioxide They could also be responsible for pumping far more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than they could possibly save as a replacement for fossil fuels.

“If we run our cars on biofuels produced in the tropics, chances will be good that we are effectively burning rainforests in our gas tanks,” warned Holly Gibbs of Stanfords Woods Institute for the Environment.

Gibbs studied satellite photos of the tropics from 1980 to 2000 and found that half of new cropland came from intact rainforests and another 30 per cent from disturbed forests.

“When trees are cut down to make room for new farmland, they are usually burned, sending their stored carbon to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide,” Gibbs said.

For high-yield crops like sugarcane it would take 40 to 120 years to pay back this carbon debt.

For lower yield crops like corn or soybeans it would take 300 to 1,500 years, she told reporters.

“Biofuels have caused alarm because of how quickly production has been growing: global ethanol production increased by four times and biodiesel by 10 times between 2000 and 2007,” Gibbs said.

Singha Life extends its sponsorship to other Thai designer labels

ootball teams, golf tournaments and concerts have long been popular picks for beer-brand sponsorship but it’s rare to see a beer making an appearance in a boutique and on a catwalk.

But Singha, Thailand’s oldest beer brand, has found a new niche to help sell its suds. The brewery launched its new corporate image in November during the Bangkok International Fashion Week 2008, making its debut on the catwalk with its Singha Life label.

The event also saw the brand introduce its sponsorship of Thai designer label Asava and its support has recently been extended to cover Sretsis.

Trachoo Kanchanasatitya, Singha’s marketing communication director, says that all products – cameras, phones and even beers – are gearing up to join with fashion brands.

In marketing terms, joining a fashion label is great exposure and adds to the brand’s “cool” factor, says Trachoo, even if it doesn’t guarantee a major boost in sales for Singha itself.

“They are able to see the talent of Thai designer and lead us to the world,” says Pimdao, who’s designed a T-shirt collection for Singha’s “Star & Rainbow” collection, the proceeds from which are donated to charity.

Singha’s own brand, known as Singha Life, is selling well, according to Cholawit Sukudom, marketing manager of Boonrawd, racking up a sevendigit figure since it was launched in October. The team includes respected Thai designers like Fly Now’s Chamnan Pakdeesuk.

The singer-actress broke the bad news recently, but declined to elaborate on the reasons she’s filing for divorce.

The new flick is apparently top secret at the studio, GTH. All we know is filming starts in a couple of months.

“I can’t say anything, except that it’s a real surprise role for me,” Marsha hinted. “I think movie-goers will be in tears.”

ark Hughes has admitted that Manchester City are not getting their money’s worth from misfiring Brazilian Robinho.

The £32-million striker was substituted with 25 minutes left following another woeful away performance in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Premier League strugglers Portsmouth.

Robinho has been sensational in home matches since joining City from Real Madrid but has repeatedly failed to recapture that scintillating form on the road.

Saturday’s loss was City’s seventh away defeat in the league and Hughes admitted the frustrating inconsistency was simply down to the likes of Robinho and fellow Brazilian Elano not performing to their best week in, week out. “It was very disappointing from our point of view,” Hughes said.

“The Premier League is the hardest in the world and you need an amount of players per-

forming at the top of their ability. If you don’t hit a certain level as a team you get beaten.

“The opposition try and stop the threat of world class players and Robinho and Elano struggled to stamp their ability on the game.

“We are not the biggest team physically and sometimes we are compromised by that away from home. It is about having the mentality and desire to get the job done.

“We missed the spark of [Shaun] Wright-Phillips but at the end of the day we had enough quality on the pitch to get a better result.”

City were facing a Portsmouth side playing their first game since sacking manager Tony Adams after just 22 games in charge.

The home outfit, under the temporary control of Paul Hart and former Manchester United number two Brian Kidd, were clearly eager to impress any prospective new boss.

Manchester City are preparing to axe Mark Hughes and install Luiz Felipe Scolari as manager, according to the News of the World Scolari was sacked by Chelsea last Monday with the team lying in fourth spot. But despite his short-lived spell at Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian is reportedly eager to remain in England and prove he can cut it in the most popular domestic competition on the planet.

Hughes has been skating on thin ice for quite some time, as the Sky Blues have failed to find any sort of consistency despite the splendid individual efforts of Robinho, Stephen Ireland and several others. The club's Arab owners are hoping the World Cup-winning coach's arrival would help lure Kaka, who nearly signed from AC Milan last month, to the North West of England. There is no word from either City or Scolari himself, however, so these reports cannot yet be considered solid or reliable.

Mexico coach Sven Goran Eriksson to Fratton Park appears to be floundering and caretaker Hart is likely to remain in charge for next weekend’s trip to relegation rivals Stoke.

Davies, 45, saved her best golf for the weekend, going 11-under-par over the final two rounds. She finished with a 7-under total of 285, ahead of Spain’s Tania Elosegui (70).

Davies, the 2004 winner, bogeyed the 18th hole while Elosegui birdied 17, putting the Spanish player into the lead with one hole to go and Davies in the clubhouse.

“At the time I must admit I thought I’d blown it – I pretty much knew it was [Tania] who made the putt on 17,” Davies said.

The blocking of Peer is a surprise because she was given a visa to play in the Qatar Open in Doha last year, a visit which was a considerable success both in tennis and diplomatic terms.
