Actress and model – and single mum – Wannasa Thongwiset says the economic recession means less TV work for her, and tougher times for her family. “I have a son and a mother to look after on my own, and now that I’m earning less money I have to work harder,” Wannasa says. “That means I don’t get to see my family as much as I would like, which affects our relationship.” “But single parents should try to find a work/family balance, and not let career goals rule their lives. Other family members can help by giving moral support,” she adds.

elped by a divorce rate that has risen to 100,000 cases per year, the number of single parents in Thailand has reached 2.5 million, and most are young people raising one or two children, a Mahidol University (MU) academic has revealed. Urging the government to launch measures to help these single parents, Saireudee Worakitphokhathorn, chief of the MU National Institute for Child and Family Development (NICFD), says that 80 per cent are not confident they can support their children without assistance from the government. Thailand has 11.4 million dependants aged 11 to 22 living in

some 2.5 million single-parent families, says Saireudee, citing a January study on family life. The survey of 1,000 single parents revealed divorce as the No 1 cause of their status, followed by the spouse’s death. One third of these single parents say they are stressed because lack of family stability means they can’t raise their kids to be happy. The main problem is financial, with single parents working longer hours, thus having less time to take care of the kids, she said.

We need help! As more than 80 per cent do not get any welfare, Saireudee is urging the authorities to increase their family income by Bt3,250 per month, provide fi-

Internationally acclaimed pianist Douglas returns to Thai shores for two concerts After his successful debut in May last year with an all-Beethoven programme, Irish-born pianist Barry Douglas is back in Bangkok to open the 2009 Great Artists of the World Series. This time he’s reaching deeper into his repertoire in two concerts at the Thailand Cultural Centre. Yesterday, his fingers delivered four classics by different composers – Schumann’s “Three Romances Op 21”, Beethoven’s “Sonata No 21 in C major Op 53 (Waldstein)”, Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit” and Liszt’s “Dante Sonata DAILY

XPRESS

(Fantasia quasi Sonata)”. “Schumann’s second Romance is easily the most recognisable, but all three are interesting pieces full of colour,” says Douglas. “Next year is the 200th anniversary of Schumann’s birth, and there will be big celebrations.”

Meaningful melodies Douglas played Beethoven’s “Waldstein Sonata in C major” to tune his audience’s ears for the contrast of Wednesday’s performance of “Piano Concerto No 3 in C Minor Op 37” and “Symphony No

5 in C minor Op 67” – both backed by the might of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit” is a haunting tone poem that tied in very well with the struggle between good and evil depicted by Liszt’s “Dante Sonata”. This latter piece has real depth, but most pianists play it too fast, skating over the surface without recognising its musical meaning. Douglas created a sensation when he won the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1986 aged just 26. With the presti-

gious trophy came the guarantee of a successful international career; Douglas now gives more than 100 concerts every year. Branching out into conducting, he kept time for the BSO last year while at the same time performing Beethoven’s “Emperor Concerto”. For his Wednesday concert he’s returning to an all-Beethoven programme, opening with “Egmont Op 84”, followed by “Piano Concerto No 3 in C Minor” and “Symphony No 5 in C Minor”. File-sharers,get a load of this... A landmark trial has opened in Sweden against four men behind The Pirate Bay, a popular online piracy site. The defendants are accused of breaking copyright law by helping Internet users worldwide download protected music, movies and computer games. Despite attempts to shut the site down, The Pirate Bay continues to make copyrighted material available to an estimated 22 million users. Two of the defendants insisted that their site was legal and said prosecutors wouldn’t be able to shut it down even if they are convicted. “They have already failed to take down the site once. Let them fail again,” Gottfrid Svartholm Warg said. The Pirate Bay doesn’t host copyrighted content, but directs users to films, music and other protected material through torrents. Entertainment companies are seeking US$14.3 million (Bt502 million) in compensation for lost revenues. – A P

arth-like planets with lifesustaining conditions are spinning around stars in our galactic neighbourhood, US astrophysicists say. They just haven’t been found yet. “There are something like a few dozen solar-type stars within something like 30 light years of the sun, and I would think that a good number of those – perhaps half of them – have Earth-like planets,” Alan Boss told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. “So I think there is a very good chance that we will find some Earth-like planets within

10, 20 or 30 light years of the sun,” said the astrophysicist from the Carnegie Institution for Science. One light year equals the distance light travels in one year at the speed of 300,000 kilometres per second, or 9.46 trillion kilometres.

Telescopes ‘will find them’ Boss is convinced that the Earth-sized planets could be found either by the Kepler space telescope the US space agency Nasa plans to launch on March 5, or by the FrenchEuropean telescope-equipped Corot satellite that has been in orbit since 2006.

“I will be absolutely astonished if Kepler or Corot don’t find any earth-like planets, because basically we are finding them already,” Boss said. The images from those new planets, he added, should identify “light from their atmosphere and tell us if they have perhaps methane and oxygen. That will be pretty strong proof they are not only habitable but actually are inhabited”. Raymond Jeanloz, professor of astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley, delved further into the matter. “I can strongly reinforce Alan Boss’s point that life is in some sense inevitable, if the same basic building blocks of life that exist on Earth are present [there].”

“Nighthawks” armed with metal detectors are illegally raiding England’s most sensitive heritage sites and plundering the booty. English Heritage, the public body looking after sites such as Stonehenge, said thieves were using state-of-the-art equipment and information they shared online to find antiquities and sell them on the Internet. The chances of detecting the so-called nighthawks were low and the penalties for being caught were light, it said. – AFP

alling all fashionistas: Oscar wants you. The film academy is adding a “Project Runway” element to the Oscars this year by asking the public to vote on which dress the trophy presenter will wear. The academy tapped seven emerging designers to create gowns for the competition. They unveiled their entries last week during the annual Oscar fashion show at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ headquarters. The winning dress “will be seen on Oscar night probably more than any other gown on the red carpet”, says Oscar fashion coordinator Patty Fox. She and show producers Laurence Mark and Bill Condon selected the competing designers. Moire Conroy, Alan Del Rosario, Sam Kori George, Marianne Kooimans, Maria Pinto, Nicolas Putvinski and Robert Rodriguez each had about three weeks to design their dress. Del Rosario, who already counts Michelle Pfeiffer and Debra Messing among his clients, was inspired by “old Hollywood glamour” in creating his strapless silk-and-lace mermaid gown.

Muscle in the bustle Maria Pinto, famous for making Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Day dress, calls her Oscar entry “modern Marie Antoinette”. The strapless silver column “is a study of control and re-

Putvinski cites New York City skyscrapers as the inspiration for his flowing white gown with folds of silver across the front. Conroy was inspired by the ’60s summer of love for her floaty grey chiffon design, while George was inspired by champagne – specifically the Taittinger girl – for his strapless silver crepe gown adorned with handmade orchids. Kooimans showed an intricately embroidered, one-shouldered dress dripping with antique diamond brooches. Oscar-worthy gems decorated each of the dresses. Neil Lane, a red-carpet regular who has worked with Marisa Tomei and Angelina Jolie, says he expects vintage looks and subdued glamour at the Oscars this year. Fox says that while she didn’t offer the design contestants any guidelines, she hoped they’d embrace classic colours and styles. “All the fashion gods were with us,” she grins.

vant-garde director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s latest short film, “Phantoms of Nabua” will premiere online tomorrow. The work is part of “Primitive”, his multi-platform art project that opens on Friday in Munich. Another film that’s part of “Primitive”, “A Letter to Uncle Boonmee”, premieres on Friday in the Bavarian capital. “Primitive” was filmed in Nabua, a village in northeastern Thailand that was subject to anti-communist purges by the Thai military. In “Phantoms of Nabua”, teens kick a flaming football in front of a flickering movie screen. “They took turns kicking the ball, which left illuminated trails on the grass. Finally they burned the screen, revealing behind it a ghostly white beam of a projector,” explains Apichatpong.

The exhibit then moves to FACT in Liverpool from September 25 to November 29.

ay goodbye to that matte makeup: 2009 is all about luminous skin, with faces that look like they’ve barely been touched. So says Korean makeup artist Myeong Suk B with MAC who updated the trends for this year’s international catwalks. She told Daily

Xpress about the US brand’s latest collection for the face and eyes. Though the tanned look isn’t popular with Thai women, she says the “revolutionary nature” look goes well with our tanned skins. “It’s Kate Moss goes to Africa,” she says. Typically, a bronzing powder can be applied on the cheeks to make them glow, though

Suk recommends a brown blush powder for a natural look. For the eyes, Suk waves away the thick black eyeliner that’s been trendy this winter and suggests using a dark kohl pencil smudged lightly with the fingers on the lash line. Use mineral shades, melted liners, and cream textures to give that “rock goddess” look. If you are more into colour then try a gentler look with lilac. Sweep it all over the lids, highlighting the centre and inner corner of the eye. Use a blush that complements the eye colour, sweep the cheeks up so that it blends with the lilac colour of the eyes. If you don’t like lilac, then opt for marshmallow pink, peach sorbet, or pistachio green.

Dread for Drenthe DPA, Madrid

R

Danny Welbeck of Manchester United fires the ball past Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater to score his team’s fourth goal.

oyston Drenthe has asked not to be picked to play because he is suffering from anxiety, according to Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos. Ramos said: “He is a young boy and he needs the help and the affection of the people who work with him. As the coach, I am prepared to give him all my support, because he is a player with a lot of potential. “Playing in front of 80,000 fans in the Bernabeu is not easy.”

FANTASTIC FIVE? Ferguson eyes unprecedented Man United trophy haul after FA Cup win AFP, Derby, England

A

lex Ferguson insisted that his quest for five trophies is not an impossible dream after Manchester United remained on course for an unprecedented haul of silverware by beating Derby 4-1 in the FA Cup fifth round. Having already claimed the Club World Cup and a place in the League Cup final against Tottenham next month, United can extend their advantage at the head of the Premier League to five points with victory over Fulham tomorrow. erguson, whose team are also in the Champions League last 16, certainly believes he has the squad to attempt a cleansweep. After making seven changes against Derby including relegating Nemanja Vidic to the bench and leaving out Dimitar Berbatov entirely, the Scot is determined to give himself every chance of keeping his team fresh for the run-in. “The squad has been fantas-

tic. They have carried us through and got us through some difficult games,” said Ferguson whose team have been drawn against either Swansea or Fulham in the FA Cup last eight. “With the game on Wednesday in mind I made some changes and the squad did very well again. “That is encouraging and we are delighted to be in the next round of the FA Cup. It would have been nice to have a home draw, but we are one game away from the semi-final and that should give everyone a great incentive. Derby coach Nigel Clough has been up close and personal with United more than any other manager recently. Since taking charge six weeks ago this was his third encounter with the European champions and after the way United breezed over their latest hurdle, Clough thinks people should begin to take their quintet quest more seriously.

Rafa wants new deal, not full control Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has called for his contract negotiations to be brought to a positive conclusion after denying he wants total control of transfers. The Spaniard’s deal runs out in the summer of 2010 and he believes the continued uncertainty over his future, and those of several members of the Anfield backroom staff, is hampering the club’s long-term planning. “Anyone that has just a year left on his contract does not have anything at all and I have only got a year and a half left,” Benitez told The Guardian. “When people, either within the club or from outside it, realise that the manager only has that much time left then he is dead. “I’ve got 10 or 12 assistants whose contracts are up in June. How can a manager lead a proj“It is possible that they can do all five. That was the most impressive performance they have put in against us,” Clough said. Cristiano Ronaldo scored one of United’s goals from a relatively rare outing in a central striking role, to add to others from Darren Gibson, Portuguese winger Nani and substitute Danny Welbeck, while Miles Addison got one back for Derby.

ect properly if the continuity of his staff is not secure for two or three years?” One of the reputed stumbling blocks to Benitez’s contract negotiations has been his alleged insistence that he is given a free rein on transfers, where chief executive Rick Parry currently holds ultimate power. But he added: “I would like to clear one thing up – I never asked for complete control. I did, however, ask for the power to be able to make my own decisions and run the team the way I see fit.” When Benitez’s time on Merseyside does come to an end, he admits it would be a privilege to take charge of Real Madrid. “I hope to be here for a long time but of course Real Madrid would be the perfect ending to anyone’s career,” he said. “But my career is not at an end yet.”

‘I could have saved Scolari’ Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has suggested that he and Didier Drogba could have saved Luiz Felipe Scolari’s job had the Brazilian played them in tandem. Scolari was sacked as Blues manager a week ago after a run of poor results and performances. Anelka and Drogba vied for a single striking role under the former Portugal boss, who did not believe they could play to-

gether, but the former scored a 15-minute hat-trick in Saturday’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Watford when the Ivorian was brought on alongside him. “Of course we can work as a partnership for Chelsea,” Anelka told The Sun. “I have said it before and so has Didier but Scolari never tried playing us together. “It was me scoring this time, but it might be Didier next time. That’s good for Chelsea.”

FOOTBALL

309 = REAL GLORY Raul breaks Di Stefano’s goals record as Madrid thrash Gijon

,,

DPA, Madrid

T

he great moment for Raul came 15 minutes into Sunday’s away game against lively but naive Sporting Gijon. Spain defender Sergio Ramos tried a speculative cross-shot from the right. Raul, like all great goalscorers, was in the right place at the right time, close to the penalty spot as the cross came over. He stuck out his trusty left foot and poked the ball past Gijon goalkeeper Inaki Lafuente to make it 1-0 – and to break the record of Alfredo Di Stefano. Thirteen minutes from the end of the game, Raul scored his 309th league goal, turning in a rebound after Lafuente spilled a shot from Gonzalo Higuain. The great Di Stefano scored 307 Liga goals for Real, between 1953 and 1964 – at the same time as helping Real to winning six European Champions Cups. Now Raul – who has helped Real to three Champions League titles – has broken the Argentine master’s goals record by scoring 309. Raul has been playing for Real longer than Di Stefano did – he made his debut in 1994 – but that should not detract from the magnitude of his achievement. “This is a good day for me,” said the 31 year-old veteran after the 4-0 romp in Gijon. As usual, though, Raul was quick to put the achievements of the team before his own per-

THISIS A GOOD DAY FOR ME. Raul Gonzalez

Real Madrid’s Raul Gonzalez celebrates after scoring the opening goal against Sporting Gijon. sonal ones, adding that “but what is really important is not the record, but that the team continues to win.” Typical Raul, the consummate one-club team-man, an anomaly in an age when top football stars, encouraged by greedy agents, are usually keen to make big-money switches from one top club to another. He says that he has never been interested in leaving the Estadio Bernabeu, though there has been no shortage of offers. Raul told the Spanish media last year that one of the secrets of his success has been a calm, gratifying personal life. He married famous model

Mamen Sanz in 2000, and has four sons with her. His hobbies are reading, hunting and bullfighting. Two years ago he raised eyebrows by admitting that he slept in an oxygen tent, in order to improve his physical resistance and muscular prowess – and to keep his career on fire after so many years at the top. It has often been said that Raul has no special qualities that make him stand out as a player: he is not especially fast, good in the air or in the dribble – and he does not possess a particularly fierce shot. However, he is the classical “Sniffer”, almost always in the

right place at the right time, to stab home a loose ball that has been bouncing around the penalty area. Few of his goals are memorably aesthetic, but they have all been important, especially the ones he scored in the 2000 and 2002 Champions Cup finals. Ironically, he comes from a family of Atletico Madrid supporters, and played in the youth sections of that club until being poached by Real in 1991, aged 14. When dropped by Spain, Raul was written off as finished by many commentators. However, the goals have not stopped and his influence as club captain has still not waned.

Inter hand off Milan to stretch lead Inter Milan defeated bitter local rivals AC Milan 2-1 in a thrilling derby at the San Siro on Sunday to close in on a fourth straight title. First half goals from Adriano and Dejan Stankovic fired Inter to a nine-point lead over Juventus at the top of Serie A with Milan a further two points back as their Scudetto hopes all but died. Before the match Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said he would pick a team capable of combating Inter’s physical and aerial threat but the nominal visitors at the ground the two clubs share failed to do exactly that and paid the price. However, he blamed the defeat on a handball in Adriano’s opener. “I don’t know if it was intentional or not but it was decisive,” he said. “I think we played well and I expect us to always play like this. It’s not easy but we will try. “Inter made the most of their high balls which were difficult for us to cope with. The title isn’t over, Inter have a lead to hold onto and we’ll try to bounce back.”

Becks’ waiting game Meanwhile, David Beckham has admitted that he would find it hard to go back to Los Angeles if the Galaxy and AC Milan failed to come to an agreement over his proposed transfer. “I’ve said I want to stay here and obviously if I do go back it will be a bit difficult. But I’m always professional so we will have to wait and see.”

BASKETBALL – NBA

FRIENDS AGAIN Kobe, Shaq reunite to share All-Star MVP honours DPA, Phoenix, Arizona

hey argue and snub each other, and for years, there has been no love lost between the former Los Angeles Lakers team-mates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. But one thing is certain: When the two play together, good things happen. The occasional friends and adversaries shared the most valuable player trophy yesterday after their West squad clobbered the East 146-119 to win the National Basketball Association’s annual All-Star Game at the US Airways Centre. Bryant, who still guides the Lakers, had a game-high 27 points in 29 minutes while the Phoenix Suns’ O’Neal added 17 in 11 minutes. Co-MVPs Shaquille Oneal, left, and Kobe Bryant of the Western Conference hold up the trophy. and Bryant lacing the twines with 12-for-23 shooting from the field, including 3-for-8 from beyond the three-point stripe. And as NBA commissioner David Stern presented the trophy to the two players at centre court after the game, they playfully tugged on it.

“He has been the best player in the league, so I’ll give him an A plus from that side and A plus for being a great guy,” O’Neal said in a tag-team media conference with Bryant afterwards. “He even let me take the trophy home today for my boys, so I appreciate him for that.”

It was the third All-Star MVP award for each player, tying them with Michael Jordan for the most in history. To add another dash of drama to the mix, Phil Jackson, the coach of the Lakers now and back then, led the West to victory on Sunday in the first game in which all three were on the same side since a rift developed between Bryant and O’Neal and Shaq demanded to be traded to Miami after the 2003-04 season. “The sub story was Shaq and Kobe,” Jackson said. “It’s a great life lesson for people. People find a way to get through situations, find harmony in their life and find co-habitation. I will just say they had a fun time.” Bryant said that Sunday night’s reunion was not a nostalgic journey for him. “Nostalgia is perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with being nostalgic. It’s not necessarily my cup of tea.” O’Neal was a little more sentimental. “It was like old times,” he said. “I miss those times.”

amarine Tanasugarn, who won the doubles final at the Pattaya Open on Sunday, has withdrawn from the US$2-million Dubai Tennis Championships that started on Sunday. The Thai flew to the United Arab Emirates yesterday to inform the organisers of her decision. If Tamarine, who was committed to playing the doubles final which ended late on Sunday evening in her and partner Yaroslava Shvedova’s favour, had not appeared personally, she would have been fined U$7,500 in line with WTA rules. Tamarine was to play Austrian Agnes Azavay in the first round in Dubai. She was replaced by Camille Pin of France. Meanwhile, Amelie Mauresmo had to make a frantic rush to meet commitments at the Dubai Open, more than 5,000 kilometres away, after contesting the Paris Open final where she beat Elena Dementieva.

he countdown to the opening ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games started on Thursday. Present on the occasion were Omega president Stephen Urquhart, Swatchgroup CEO Nick Hayek Jr, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge and John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Organising Committee. Spectators cheered as the Omega countdown clock reached exactly 365 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds. Rogge highlighted Omega’s role in the development of sports timekeeping, describing the Swiss company as “a source of enormous confidence for the IOC and the organisers of the Olympic Games”. He praised the warmth of the British Columbia people and the beauty of the host cities.

Performers celebrate as the clock begins to count down a year to the icy rivalries of the Winter Olympics in Canada. Hayek Jr presented a ceremonial version of the Olympic bell, used to announce the final lap in long competitions, to Furlong. The two executives expressed confidence that the

Games would exceed all expectations. The opening ceremony for the Games will take place on the February 12, 2010 and the sporting competitions will begin the next day.

ince its launch, the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) has been a perfect platform for Asian women to gain experience against stronger players from other continents. Now into its fourth season, the LAGT has been used by many of Asia’s up-and-coming talents as a springboard to the Japan LPGA Tour. Thailand’s Porani Chutichai is hoping to make the leap and earn her card in Japan, but it all depends on her finances. “For the last few years my objective has been to get to the Japan qualifying school. It’s expensive there but I’ve finally saved enough to make my move. I want to play in the Japan qualifying in August to earn my card,” she said. The 23-year-old Porani, nick-

named Wing (meaning “run”), said she wants to make a big impact on the LAGT tournaments this season, beginning with the US$120,000 TAT Thailand Ladies Open starting tomorrow at The Vintage Golf Club. “There are three events – Thailand, India and Indonesia – before I go for Q-school in Japan. I need to earn money to see me through in Japan. Of course, winning tournaments will be great and that’s what I aim to do,” she said. A winning start in Thailand, she said, will set her up for the season. “I’ll have to be at my best to overcome players like my compatriot Pornanong [Phatlum], America’s Stacy Pramanasudh, China’s Wang Chun and Ye Liying and the Korean girls,” said Porani. But improvements to her swing, and the feel of a new putter are giving her confidence. “I just need to go out there and perform,” she said.

STRAUSS CALLS TUNE Skipper Andrew Strauss’s 169, his 15th Test hundred, helped England bury the double misery of their Jamaica humiliation.

World No 1 Rafael Nadal suffered another knee injury worry as he slipped to a 6-3 4-6 6-0 defeat to Britain’s Andy Murray in the Rotterdam Open Sunday. The fourth-ranked Scot, who won his second title of 2009, admitted that the knee injury which struck the Spaniard in the second set – and which Nadal refused to discuss – took the sparkle off the final. “I’m happy with the week but not especially with the way that it ended,” said Murray, who also won in Doha in January against Nadal. “I can’t be disappointed with how I was playing. I knew something was wrong with Rafa as he took about 30kph off of his serve in the second set. “I could see him shaking his head. But he’s not the kind of guy who’s going to stop chasing the ball unless there’s a good reason.” The humble Spaniard paid full credit to Murray, who now stands 2-5 in their series and can claim bragging rights as winner of their first final after losing their first five meetings. But Nadal was loathe to discuss his injury, refusing to say it had any bearing on the one-hour, 50-minute match.

Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal shared the court again, the ball and the rewards. Bryant scored 27 points and former teammate O’Neal added 17, sparking the Western Conference to a win over the East 146-119 at the 58th NBA All-Star Game. Bryant and O’Neal, the argumentative duo who led the Lakers to three-straight championships, were back together for the first time in five years. >PAGE 26
