Go By Bike in Chase

CEAS and the Village of Chase are busy preparing for the Go By Bike campaign in Chase. Please register on-line by logging onto gobybikebc.ca and choose Chase from communities drop down. Once you create an account you will see the Chase page AND will be able to “log your ride” for the week of May 29June 4th.

On May 29th at 8:30am, there will be a ribbon cutting event at the bus-loop between Haldane and CSS sending bike riders off for a short ride around the community to promote the start of this event. Be sure to bring a smile, dress up, decorate...anything goes to show our communities enthusiasm for the fun week ahead!!

Also, as part of the week, there will be a self guided story-book ride suitable for the entire family that will start May 29th and last for the duration of the event. You will start at the Pocket Park in downtown Chase to read the 1st of 6 Chapters. Once

completed you will be directed to each individual 5 remaining parks located in Chase. The “Musings of Marcus,” written by local author, P. Rosemary French, will entertain and amuse you, as Marcus the cat keeps his owners on high-alert with all his adventures and misadventures. Once you have read all 6 Chapters be sure to drop your name in the draw box at the Chase Library to win a copy of the book courtesy of the Chase Literacy Program.

Go by Bike BC is encouraging all residents of BC and of course Chase (from toddlers to retirees) to experience the joy of cycling and to ride their bikes as much as possible during this week, Whether it’s to work, school, for fun, for exercise, to stretch your legs, to clear your mind….no matter the reason, just ride your bike!!!

Getting around on smaller wheels like scooters and rollerblades counts too!!!

The Chase Food Bank has partnered with BC Farmers Market Association and is providing farmers market coupons. The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program (FMNCP) is a healthy eating initiative that supports farmers’ markets and strengthens food security across British Columbia. Community partner organizations provide coupons to lower-income families, pregnant people and seniors participating in their food literacy programs. Coupons can be spent at all BCAFM member farmers’ markets that participate in the FMNCP, and can be used to purchase vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, dairy, herbs, vegetable & fruit plants, honey, meat and fish.

Invasive Species Action Month offers timely reminder for Shuswap boaters and watercraft users submitted

Spring in the Shuswap has many thinking about boating, paddling, and fishing.

The month of May is designated as Invasive Species Action Month, and here in the Shuswap that means it’s time to focus on aquatic invasive species prevention. The increased movement of boats and watercraft into and around the Shuswap means there’s an increased risk of moving aquatic invasive species.

Two invasive species of utmost concern are Zebra and Quagga Mussels (ZQM): small freshwater mussels from Europe that, unfortunately, have invaded waters in the Great Lakes, Manitoba, and many watersheds in the US including as far west as California. Thankfully, ZQM have not invaded lakes in BC or our nearest neighbour Alberta.

Protecting the waterways in BC from invasive mussels is an ongoing effort. The Shuswap Watershed Council (SWC) and Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS) are working together to educate the public about how to keep invasive mussels out of the Shuswap.

If you’re unfamiliar with these invasive mussels, it’s important to understand how they can impact our waterways.

“The problem with zebra and quagga mussels is that they grow and attach to anything below the water’s surface like boat hulls, dock pilings, inside

pipes and hydro-electric facilities, and even inside engine compartments,” says Erin Vieira, program manager for the Shuswap Watershed Council. “The mussels form in colonies and removing them would be an ongoing maintenance effort which has been conservatively estimated to cost BC property owners and taxpayers $43 million per year.”

Zebra and quagga mussels can also impact water quality and disrupt aquatic food-webs through their filter-feeding and by out-competing native species for food. This puts the lake ecosystem and our drinking water at risk. When the mussels die, their small sharp shells wash up on shorelines and beaches, thus disturbing our enjoyment of water-based activities.

Once zebra or quagga mussels are established in a lake, there are no effective means of eliminating them. They reproduce prolifically, leading to massive infestations.

It’s important to understand that invasive mussels can move from one lake to another by clinging to boats, personal watercraft, trailers, canoes and other watercraft. They attach directly to a surface, or collect within small compartments of water inside the watercraft.

Watercraft from outside BC could potentially be infested with invasive mussels. It could take just one infested watercraft launching into the

Art Holding Memorial Arena – Facility Manager

The Village of Chase is seeking Requests for Proposals (RFP) from qualified proponents for the provision of Facility Manager for the Art Holding Memorial Arena for a contracted term of two years.

The Facility Manager is an integral part of the Arena operations, ensuring all components of the operations are maintained to ensure consistent delivery of services to the users of the facility. The Facility Manager will report to the Board of the Chase and District Recreation Centre Society, who is currently under agreement with the Village of Chase to oversee the operations of the facility.

Responsibilities include:

• Maintain exceptional facility cleanliness

• Develop and maintain operational procedures and policies and communicate those to all employees, user groups, and the Recreation Centre Society Board members

• Ensure all components of the facility including ice making equipment, Zamboni, utilities including water, sewer and electricity continue to be in good working condition

• Liaise with the Board of Directors and the Village of Chase regarding necessary repairs and/or upgrades to the building including roof, elevator, parking area and other components of the building envelope

• Ensure all revenue and expenses are accounted for and tracked using acceptable accounting software

• Ensure the maintenance of an active website/social media presence to market the facility to groups and individuals for various events and tournaments

• Interact regularly with all user groups of the Arena to ensure positive ongoing communications

May is Invasive Species Month

Shuswap to start a new population of invasive mussels. There are prevention measures that boat and watercraft owners need to follow.

“Clean, drain, and dry your watercraft every time you move it out of the water. By doing this, you’re greatly eliminating the chance that you’re moving invasive species,” explains Jess Booth, Outreach Coordinator for CSISS. Just like it sounds, Clean, Drain, Dry involves three steps:

• After removing it from the water, clean your boat or watercraft to remove mud, plant material, small aquatic life, and other debris

• Drain all compartments onto dry land

• Ensure your watercraft is thoroughly dried before re-launching.

Zebra and quagga mussels grow to about 1 centimeter in diameter and may be attached to watercraft or inside compartments or other hardto-spot areas. Juvenile mussels are free-swimming and microscopic –impossible to detect with the human eye.

“Additionally, It’s very important that travellers with watercraft stop at watercraft inspection stations,” Booth adds. Highway-side inspection stations are set up at entry-points to BC staffed by the Conservation

Officer Service.

All travellers with watercraft must stop. Watercraft will be inspected and decontaminated, if needed, all free of charge. Watercraft inspection is mandatory, and failing to stop for inspection carries a heavy fine.

Watercraft inspection isn’t required when travelling within BC. However, Shuswap residents can help raise awareness for the importance of inspection.

Clean-Drain-Dry and watercraft inspection apply to all kinds of watercraft: sport boats, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, personal watercraft, and more.

These prevention measures will also slow down the spread of existing invasive species that occur in the Shuswap, including Eurasian water milfoil and invasive freshwater clams.

Any suspected transport, possession, or sightings of zebra and quagga mussels should be reported to the Provincial RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277. MP Mel Arnold Recognized for Fight Against

Aquatic Invasive Species Press Release

Mel Arnold, Member of Parliament for North Okanagan-Shuswap, was recognized yesterday as a Water Warrior for his ongoing work to raise awareness and advocate for preventative actions in the fight against aquatic invasive species, or AIS, across the country.

“I am honoured to receive this recognition,” stated MP Arnold following the Great Lakes- St Lawrence Day on the Hill event. “AIS continue to pose acute threats to the waters and ecologies across Canada, including British Columbia, and much work remains to be done to prevent the spread of AIS and protect our waters and ecosystems for future generations of Canadians.”

MP Arnold received the Water Warrior award from a group of eight organizations that work to fight AIS and protect waters of Ontario’s Great Lakes, where 191 non-native and invasive aquatic species have taken root, and St. Lawrence.

“Proliferation of AIS in the Great Lakes and St Lawrence should inform the essential work of protecting BC waters,” MP Arnold said. “Considering the permanent damages of AIS inflicted on eastern Canadian waters and communities, an ounce of prevention is truly

worth a pound of cure, and I will continue to press the federal government with this urgent message.”

Prior to being elected to the House of Commons in 2015, Arnold was involved in local, provincial and national conservation organizations and worked on volunteer projects protecting water and aquatic habitats and fighting aquatic invasive species.

“In receiving this recognition, I thank organizations across the North Okanagan-Shuswap on the front lines in the fight against AIS,” continued MP Arnold. “The daily work of the Okanagan Basin Water Board, Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society, Fraser Basin Council, Columbia Shuswap Regional District and other groups and local governments is essential to protecting our waters and informs my continued advocacy in Ottawa.”

Missing Kayaker Located Deceased

UPDATE: Chase RCMP Release, May 15, 2023 5:30pm

On May 14th, 2023 at approximately 4:00 pm, Chase RCMP received several reports of a kayaker in distress in Chase Creek. Witnesses reported that a male clinging to an overturned kayak was being swept toward the South Thompson River. An extensive search was conducted throughout the evening by Shuswap Search and Rescue. The search resumed the following morning with assistance from Kamloops Search and Rescue.

The male was located, deceased, at approximately noon on Monday May 15th. The man’s identity has been confirmed and the family notified of his death. Chase RCMP would like to express their condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragedy.

On May 14th, 2023 at approximately 4:00 pm, Chase RCMP received several reports of a kayaker in distress in Chase Creek. Witnesses reported that a male clinging to an overturned kayak was being swept toward the South Thompson River. An extensive search was conducted throughout the evening by Shuswap Search and Rescue; search efforts will continue in daylight with additional resources. Donkey refuge opens for visitors with resiliency & Sustainability at top of mind Press Release

Donkey friends, rejoice! The Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge is now open for weekend drop-in visits, and prebookings on Quiet Tuesdays & Group Tour Thursdays. Open Saturdays & Sundays from 10:30am to 3:30pm, with the last entry at 3pm, visitors to the Refuge can spend time with the donkeys, bring a picnic & enjoy the fresh air & peaceful atmosphere, and browse the Donkey Shoppe.

Located near Chase, the Donkey Refuge provides a safe, secure, & permanent home for neglected, abused or unwanted Donkeys. Refuge Founders Shirley Mainprize and Rob Miller have been rescuing donkeys for over 25 years. “The Refuge houses 100 donkeys in permanent care, with foster farms helping support our cause.”

Donkeys originate from Africa and were imported during colonization. “Donkeys are one of the most resilient animals, and their ability to recover always surprises and inspires us. When a donkey arrives here, we make a promise to that animal to provide the best possible opportunity to heal.”

Over the years, keeping that promise has included developing more irrigation for pastures and fire protection, installing generators for backup power to ensure the donkeys always have fresh clean water, and building an infirmary & insulated recovery room for sick donkeys.

This year the Refuge is focusing on resiliency and environmental sustainability. Mainprize notes “We just planted windrows of aspens to help with

fire protection as well as crabapple and saskatoons to feed native animals, birds, and insects. Our goal is to plant 200 trees this year.” The TNRD is helping with a $1000 grant to plant another round of trees in the fall. Other ways the Refuge is looking to increase sustainability? “Hot composting, solar power, insulating the barns, flowers for pollinators, and connecting people with the outdoor environment.”

Recent temperature extremes are especially hard on the donkeys, with colic at an all-time high among area equines. “It’s not just us – we have heard from many other horse people in the region who have had colic issues this year. The weather is very unstable, and it has not been kind to donkeys, horses, mules, and other grazing animals.”

Visitors should also note the Refuge is resuming construction on their Barn Expansion, which had to be put on hold due to supply chain issues and the winter weather, so some areas of the farm will be off limits this summer. “The barn expansion is crucial to our longterm planning, and we are hoping we can mitigate the risks of colic by also insulating the existing barn while we have the workers here. A generous long-time supporter has kicked off our insulation campaign with $25,000 and we are hoping to raise another $75,000.”
