In her 12-year career, Alicia Keys has gathered 14 Grammys and sold over 35 million sold records making her one of the best-selling artists of the 2000s. Success with “Fallin’”, “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Empire State of Mind” – to name just a few of her hits – together with her reputation as a dazzling performer have taken Keys to work with the likes of musical greats Ray Charles, Jay-Z and Jack White. The fifth studio album from Alicia Keys, Girl on Fire, was released in 2012 with the title track becoming a worldwide hit. Known as a multi-instrumentalist, producer and, of course, a veritable songwriting talent, Keys has over the years become one of the most praised artists of our times. Old punk songs get a complete makeover, when Pekko Käppi and Juhana Nyrhinen cover them with instruments so indigenous that they don’t even have proper English names. The jouhikko is a traditional bowed lyre, the rapapalli is known as the birch-bark rattle ball and then there is the kantele made from a skateboard. What Käppi and Nyrhinen create is totally original and the pared down arrangements of the songs reveal frightening and tender characteristics from the songs.

We want to take the environment and sustainable development into consideration in everything we do, in planning the festival as well as actualizing it, during it and after it. In this way we make sure we are creating an event entirety that is enjoyable for everyone along with being socially responsible. Below we tell you more about Flow Festival`s environmental procedures. Wind power decreases emissions 25% of the energy at this year’s festival is produced with renewable energy. The constant change happening in the Suvilahti festival area makes it impossible to build permanent electricity networks. The local energy company Helsingin Energia will however enable temporary solutions that provide notable quantities of green energy during the festival. The Black Tent, for instance, will run on 100% wind power.

74

Waste and Recycling Green events project Flow Festival is the pilot-event of Green Events Project, co-ordinated by the Helsinki City Environment Centre, which aims to develop the management of environmental issues of events. Events that adequately take the environment and sustainable development into consideration are granted an EcoCompass Event certificate. The grounds for granting the EcoCompass certificate are the auditing of the events and consistent criteria. Flow Festival was granted with the certificate in autumn 2012. By taking part in the project, we are creating a standard of activity in which being environmentally friendly as a part of a responsible and good quality event is made easier. Events have a notable environmental impact, which can be minimized by changing the way of doing things. At the same time events can minimize environmental impact through their activity by environmental communication and education; Flow Festival wants to be an active member of this development.

The amount of waste created by the festival has been minimized during each year of our activity. The restaurants at Flow, for example, use biodegrading cutlery and all the waste is recycled. The festival crowd is encouraged to return empty bottles and cans to the recycling depots by collecting a refundable amount at the time of purchase, which is refunded when the bottles/cans are returned. Recycling guides help the festival audience to sort the waste, and recycling is optimized by adding the number of recycling depots. We also give specific recycling instructions to all our subcontractors and employees. The merchandise sold at the festival also favours recycled materials along with fair trade and environmentally certified products. The festival crowd can also support the rescue programme of the Baltic Sea by buying a Baltic Sea ticket worth two euros, the money from which will be directed unabridged to the WWF’s Operation Mermaid. The cleaning of the festival area is conducted by over 200 people so that it will be returned to its usual state as quickly as possible, and so that the waste will not accumulate to the close by areas. In 2012 out of all the waste created at the festival 82% was recycled - the target for 2013 is 90 per cent.

Traffic and emvironment Sustainable solutions Flow Festival seeks for sustainable solutions that will last for many years in the production of the event. For example the furniture and decorations are gathered from recycled, long lasting materials that can be reused. The festival area has an artificial turf that is used for many years. We work together with Martela, so that the furniture used at the festival will be resold and reused.

Because the festival has a lot of visitors, the traffic produces a lot of contamination and noise pollution. Flow Festival actively encourages the festival crowd to favour environmentally friendly modes of transport to the festival and away. Our festival does not offer parking space for private cars, but encourages people arriving to the festival to use public transport or bicycles. Near the festival area, there is a free and guarded bicycle parking area, where the crowd can bring their bikes. It’s also possible to walk to a city festival. There’s also a Kyyti.net carpool stop located near the bicycle park. Read more, share your car and leave a request for a ride at www.kyyti.net. On top of taking notice of how people get to the festival, we also take into consideration the pollution caused by the travel of our performers and subcontractors. We work together with local subcontractors and Nordic event organizers to make sure that the travel between places of performance is reasonable.

Carbon Footprint and Minimizing it A part of Flow Festival’s environmental programme is to calculate its carbon footprint. Because the trips of the artists and use of energy inevitably cause carbon emissions, we have conducted calculations of our carbon footprint together with Pöyry Energy Consulting Offset since 2009, which has led to practical procedures. Flow Festival has compensated its carbon emissions into sustainable WWF Gold Standard energy projects annually since 2009. Thanks to the calculations, we have also been able to lower our carbon footprint, for example by minimizing the amount of landfill waste.

Beaches and swimming pools The most popular swimming beach in Helsinki is Hietaniemi beach, also known locally as ”Hietsu”. Other beaches in Helsinki can be found at e.g. Uunisaari, Munkkiniemi, Mustikkamaa, Pihlajasaari and Seurasaari. If you’d rather swim in a swimming pool, there are two outdoor swimming pools in Helsinki: Swimming Stadium and Kumpula Outdoor Swimming Pool.

Parks One third of Helsinki consists of parks and during the summer time locals tend to spend a lot of time in them. If you’re in the centre of Helsinki you might want to check out for an example the Esplanade, Kaisaniemi, Kaivopuisto or Sinebrycoff parks, or perhaps enjoy some time around the Töölönlahti Bay. Also the Alppipuisto Park, located between Linnanmäki Amusement Park and the train tracks is worth spending time at.
