It is a lovely way to spend your Sunday afternoon, and I hope you will join us for this special series where you get to learn more about the CSO and our musicians in an intimate setting. I am excited to present our fourth season at Volkswagen Chattanooga with Haunted Top Hits featuring spooky symphonic music for Halloween, the Tabasco Opera, and a Family Concert. Come enjoy great, family-friendly music in a casual setting. I am thrilled to welcome world-renowned, Grammy Award-winning soprano Renée Fleming to Chattanooga. Carnival Overture Knoxville Summer of 1915 Rainbow Body Pines of Rome

Opening Night begins with big sound as Dvorák’ ˇ s Carnival Overture introduces a program based on nature and the great outdoors. Barber’s Knoxville Summer of 1915 is a lush, richly textured work that is set to James Agee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, A Death in the Family, and paints an idyllic, nostalgic picture of Chattanooga’s neighbor. Theofanidis’ enthralling Rainbow Body brings mysticism and mystery. Closing the concert is Respighi’s Pines of Rome, a symphonic poem paying homage to the long-standing pine trees throughout the city of Rome.

BRAHMS REQUIEM 10.22.15 • 7:30pm

Kayoko Dan, conductor Carole Fitzpatrick, soprano | Robert Barefield, baritone Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Chorus, Darrin Hassevoort, director D’ERCOLE Wie die Blätter des Herbstes herabfallen ("As the leaves of Autumn fall") WORLD PREMIERE BRAHMS Requiem Brahms’ German Requiem was written to comfort the living, not for the souls of the dead. This masterpiece was immediately recognized by critics as one of exceptional vision as it focuses on faith in the resurrection rather than fear of the Day of Judgement, as a typical Requiem might. Opening the concert is a world premiere of a piece written by modern composer Kendra D’Ercole, based on Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament regarding his despair over his increasing deafness.

Kayoko Dan, conductor Alexander Schimpf, piano RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Russian Easter Overture TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No. 1 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 1 This all-Russian program begins with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture, celebrating the change of mood from the somber mystery of Good Friday to the uninhibited rejoicing of Easter Day. Pianist Alexander Schimpf joins us for Tchaikovsky’s deeply expressive and romantic first piano concerto. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 ends the program. Written when the composer was only 18, it set the tone for all his symphonies that followed.

PIECAITIS SCHECKELE SAINT-SAËNS

BEETHOVEN BACH BRAHMS

Violin Concerto Chorale from Cantata No. 150 Symphony No. 4

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is widely held to be the greatest piece of its kind. It is crafted with great serenity and as lyrical as anything Beethoven ever composed. Brahms 4th symphony, his last, is at times expressive, noisy, and powerful, and said to be the essence of everything Brahms stood for musically. Music Director Kayoko Dan will arrange a special non-vocal performance of Bach’s Chorale from Cantata No. 150 with strings and horns.

2.18.16 • 7:30pm

Catcerto Thurber’s Dogs Carnival of the Animals

This musical ode to animals features YouTube sensation, Nora the cat, who taught herself to play piano. Mindaugas Piecaitis composed the work Catcerto, which is accompanied by Nora on video. Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals is a fun work that the composer wished to have published posthumously, so as not to distract from his more serious works. Lions, swans, tortoises, and a jackass or two will all make an appearance.

Concerto in E-flat, “Dumbarton Oaks” Fantasia para un gentilhombre ("Fantasia for a Gentleman") Pulcinella Suite

Two of Stravinsky’s works are featured on this program, beginning with his Dumbarton Oaks Concerto, commissioned by an American diplomat, which is intimate and delightful. His Pulcinella ballet suite consists of music based upon compositions of the baroque composer Pergolesi. Plus, back by popular demand, classical guitarist Pablo Villegas performs Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un gentilhombre (“Fantasia for a Gentleman”), based on six short dances.

423.267.8583

CHOPIN Piano Concerto No. 1 RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade Rimsky-Korsakov’s widely popular Scheherazade is based on The Tales of the Arabian Nights, and is firmly Russian with a flavor of ‘oriental’ sound. The piece exhibits his skill in varying orchestral color. Joining the CSO on the first half is the 2013 winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition, Stanislav Khristenko, in Chopin’s romantic Piano Concerto No. 1.

POPS SERIES

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2015/16 Pops season at BOB BERNHARDT PRINCIPAL POPS the CSO! There's a little bit of everything CONDUCTOR this year, from Tony Kishman's tribute to the music of Paul McCartney (feeding my inner-Beatle, as you know), to Play Ball, our tribute to music and sports (feeding my inner-old-guy-who-used-to-be-an-athlete). It's "welcome home", too, as our Holiday Pops continues to feature many of our fine local talents, and especially so for the triumphant return to Chattanooga of Bass-Baritone Seth Carico, born and raised right here, and making a name for himself on the Opera stages of Europe. I'm especially excited that my friend, Byron Stripling, will join us for Big Band Fever this season. He is a master-trumpeter and brilliant entertainer and will help us dance the night away! We have a fabulous season ahead, and I look forward to seeing you at the Pops.

Bob Bernhardt, conductor Seth Carico, vocalist

The Tivoli Theatre turns into a playing field as Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt brings together the best of sportsrelated music. The first half features several sports, such as football fight and spirit songs (can you say “Rocky Top”?), the Olympic theme, and works representing hockey, tennis, and horseracing. The second half is all baseball, Bob’s favorite sport. No suits allowed at this concert as the musicians and audience will be decked out in their favorite sports jerseys and ballcaps. Prepare to have an evening of fun with several special guests.

PETER AND THE WOLF

Kayoko Dan, conductor

Kayoko Dan, conductor

In 1894, the McElhenny Company, the creators of Tabasco Sauce, sponsored a national tour of this light-hearted musical, including a stop here in Chattanooga. New Orleans conductor Paul Mauffrey has reconstructed more than 40 minutes of the original opera for performance. This Gilbert & Sullivan-like opera will be included on a program of other light opera works.

Keep the Halloween fun going with this post-Halloween concert featuring the best of ‘haunted’ hits from the classical music repertoire, including “Night on Bald Mountain”, “Danse Macabre”, Peer Gynt Suite, and Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead. A perfect concert for the whole family. Halloween costumes encouraged!

Peter and the Wolf is a popular children’s classical music work which teaches about sections of the orchestra and their sounds using various animals and characters. The program will also feature other works related to animals.
