The title character of Madame Butterfly — a young Japanese geisha who clings to the belief that her arrangement with a visiting American naval officer is a loving and permanent marriage — is one of the defining roles in opera. The lyric beauty of Puccini’s score has made Butterfly timeless. Experience lavish sets and costumes and gorgeous music provided by guest soloists, the CSO orchestra, and CSO Chorus.

2016/17 Barnett & Company

Masterworks Series

9.22.16 Opening Night

at the Tivoli Theatre

The CSO’s 2016/17 Barnett & Company Masterworks Series will highlight some of classical music’s most beloved works and composers, such as Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, along with works by Mozart, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Dvoˇrák, and Mahler. A special feature to this year’s Masterworks Series is the programming of four modern composers, three of whom are American. Joan Tower, Kendra D’Ercole (a world premiere), James Stephenson, and Ola Gjielo are featured with CSO premieres.

Strauss and Rachmaninoff 7:30 pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Ning An, piano Tower Strauss Rachmaninoff

Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 2 Don Juan Piano Concerto No. 2

The CSO opens the season with music inspired by the Renaissance-era Don Juan legend. Strauss’ work provides a sweeping energy mixed with love themes as the audience follows along in his romantic exploits. Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto, featuring prize-winning pianist Ning An, is one of the most beloved compositions in classical music. Listeners will immediately recognize its emotional melodies, particularly the 2nd movement, due to its popularity in films and modern music. Modern composer Joan Tower is featured with the second of her five compositions titled Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, dedicated to women who are adventurous and risk takers.

10.20.16 Beethoven Choral Fantasy

7:30 pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Robert Barefield, baritone Spencer Myer, piano CSO Chorus, Darrin Hassevoort, director Beethoven D’Ercole Beethoven

Egmont Overture Wie die Blätter des Herbstes herabfallen world premiere

Choral Fantasy

This Beethoven and Beethoven-inspired concert begins with his Egmont Overture, the overture to a play of the same name in which he wrote several incidental music pieces. This powerful and dramatic overture, with its political overtones, became the unofficial anthem of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Next up is the world premiere of modern composer Kendra D’Ercole and her piece that was inspired by Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament regarding his despair over his increasing deafness. Closing out the concert is Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, written for piano, solo voices, chorus, and orchestra.

11.17.16 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

7:30 pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Joshua Roman, cello Elgar Cello Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 Elgar’s Cello Concerto was his last notable work, composed in the aftermath of the first World War. A critic at the time called it “very simple…but with a profound wisdom and beauty underlying its simplicity.” American cellist Joshua Roman will perform the contemplative work. Tchaikovsky had a love/ hate relationship with his 5th symphony. At times proud then repelled by it, he defines the work as “Complete resignation before Fate, or(which is the same thing) before the inscrutable predestination of Providence.”

3.2.17

Bartok Concerto for Orchestra 7:30 pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Holly Mulcahy, violin Stephenson Bartok

Concerto for Violin, “Tributes” Concerto for Orchestra

American composer James Stephenson wrote his violin concerto for violinist Jennifer Frautschi (past cso guest artist) as a commission for the Minnesota Orchestra, titled “Tributes”, in appreciation for all who helped in its creation. CSO’s concertmaster Holly Mulcahy takes on this challenging work. Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra was his final completed work and his most popular. Bartok treats sections and solo instruments as if they were protagonists in a concerto, mysterious and expressive.

Rosamunde Overture Concerto for Trumpet Symphony No. 7

In a case of mistaken identity, Schubert’s Overture to Rosamunde was actually the overture to Die Zauberharfe (The Magic Harp). Regardless of its origin, it is considered one of his finest orchestral works. Metropolitan Opera Principal Trumpet Billy Hunter joins the CSO for Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto. Closing out the evening is Dvoˇrák’s 7th Symphony, a more gloomy and somber yet dramatic piece than some of his other symphonies.

4.6.17 Mozart and Mahler 7:30 pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Maria Valdes, soprano

Mozart Don Giovanni Overture Mozart Exsultate jubilate Mahler Symphony No. 4 Mozart’s Don Giovanni opera is based on the legend of Don Juan, a nice follow-up to the CSO’s Opening Night concert. The opera combines comedy, melodrama, and supernatural elements. Legend tells us that the Overture, written just hours before the premiere, was sight-read by musicians, and received immediate accolades by the audience. Soprano Maria Valdes then joins us for Mozart’s sacred work, Exsultate jubilate, originally written for a castrato. Ending the program is Mahler’s 4th symphony, considered his most accessible with a smaller orchestra and shorter performance time compared to other Mahler symphonies. It opens with flutes and sleigh bells, and concludes with text sung by a soprano, featuring Valdes once again.

A second Joan Tower piece of the season opens the final Masterworks concert, this time her first Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, inspired by Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. Next up is Britten’s Four Sea Interludes, scene change music from his opera Peter Grimes. The final modern work of the season is Ola Gjeilo’s Dreamweaver, set from a well-known Norwegian medieval poem, Draumkveder. To end the season is Debussy’s La Mer, a unique mix of tone poem and symphony, which depicts the richness of the sea.
