Creating Connections

Winter is finally here and as we leave the cheerful holidays behind us, it’s time to reflect as we have a new year before us. What were some of our biggest triumphs? Where did we faulter? When I think back on my 2022, I remember how I opened myself up to creating connections. For me, one of the better places to connect is in the heart of a home - the kitchen. In our annual kitchen guide, you’ll be immersed in a variety of outstanding kitchen designs created by top Lowcountry home professionals.

We are so thrilled to have former fashion editor, brand builder, and owner of the innovative sculpting swimwear line, STYLEST, Alia Yahia-Bosworth on our cover this issue. Alia welcomes us into her newly renovated Charleston Single home on Daniel Island. We sit down with Alia as she discusses being a powerhouse businesswoman, entrepreneur, and an all-around boss with her family of five.

From Sun to Shade

What are your home and design backgrounds?

Katie left outside sales to explore a more creative field working for a home interiors retailer. She then founded Island Shade Shoppe, formerly named Kiawah Island Shades, in response to a need for creative service providers dedicated to window coverings.

What prompted your business collaboration?

Kiawah Island Shades grew rapidly prompting Katie to ask Dianna to join her in the business! Dianna moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico to join the team and assume the role of business partner. We then rebranded to Island Shade Shoppe and opened a Hunter Douglas Gallery showroom.

What is your favorite window treatment for a home on the water?

Solar screen shades are the top choice for preserving the view while filtering direct sun and minimizing glare.

What is the best way to shade a room while still taking advantage of natural light?

Shades have become extremely versatile in their functionality. Gone are the days of being limited to up or down, all view, all light or no view, no light. We now have shade products that can cover the bottom half of the window providing privacy with the top half open for natural light and view. Shades that combine sheer and opaque materials preserving the view while providing daytime privacy, light diffusion and UV protection, while also providing complete, blackout coverage, all in one product.

Countertop Surfaces

It all depends on the application, but I think a matte/honed finish can really warm up a space. Especially if the cabinets have a high-gloss finish.

I love something simple like White Zen or Carrara Venatino Quartz by Cosmos Quartz because I love to see some dramatic tile in the shower. Let the tile be the focal point in the bathroom.

Warm, earthy tones are coming back. I am obsessed with a stone called Verano Gold by Thor Quartz. If you want the look of a natural stone without the maintenance, that is the stone for you.

Outdoor applications are tricky. No matter which stone you put outside it will fade over time if it’s in direct sunlight. I like a dark granite piece typically, but it depends on cabinet color and surrounding décor.

Typically, I prefer a matte finish because it gives an allure of softness to both natural stone and man-made quartz.  Often a matte finish on quartz makes it look more natural.

I like a simple and light design in solid surface- mostly because there is less contrast with the sink cut outs.  To me a smaller countertop, like a vanity, looks and feels sleeker when it has a quiet presence in the room.

I find my happy place with a natural Quartzite. It is a good option for those that really appreciate the characteristics of a natural stone.  It does require some maintenance, but it is so much tougher than a marble.

Many of the Corian brand solid surface colors have a strong degree of color stability in the outdoor elements.  The lighter colors, as well as most of the of the earthy tone colors, top the list in the performance tests.

GlassEco Surfaces

Husband and wife duo, Chris and Elizabeth Fisher invite us into their Park Circle home where their own sustainable, yet stylish surface designs installed throughout the home.

Originally starting in 1992 as a glass bottle collection and recycling service for restaurants in the downtown Charleston area, GlassEco Surfaces has grown into a leading countertop and surface company for the Lowcountry, offering custom-made and eco-friendly products for any and all surface needs. Owners, Chris and Elizabeth Fisher have installed countertops in their kitchen, master bathroom, and their son’s bathroom – each unique in color, pattern, and character that enlivens their coastal Carolina home.

Kitchen Master Bathroom Bathroom

Wanting to enhance the coastal feel of their home, the Fishers incorporated blue and green glass, oyster shells, and their own personal stones into the “Wright Dune” mixture for the countertops. “The stones represent the mountains of Virginia, where we are from and then we chose a satin-honed finish,” Elizabeth explains. Their countertop was one of the final elements installed into their kitchen, allowing them to pull existing colors of their home into the design.

While both bathroom countertops have similar designs, Elizabeth and Chris chose to have more subtle hints of blues and greens in their bathroom with their “Blue Ocean” combination. Chris explains, “This is 100% solid surface, so nothing can penetrate it, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Each mixture contains different color backgrounds as well as different sizes of glass.” Every mixture created is completely custom from the color of recycled glass, the sand, oyster shell shapes, and any personal touches that a homeowner might want to include.

Chris and Elizabeth’s son, Alex, designed the countertop in his bathroom, using vibrant glass colors and incorporating more cobalt blues to truly stand out. “We are recycling a product that we collect locally and remove from the landfills, to create a new product that can be used to decorate and give personal character to each home. This is what makes our jobs so enjoyable,” Elizabeth tells us. GlassEco Surfaces creates unique surfaces for floors, shelving, outdoor living spaces, and fireplaces, too.

A Legacy Set in Stone

Branching off her father’s Ohio-based business, Nature Stone, Serena Wilson and her husband Luke began Coastal Stone Flooring to provide Lowcountry homes with high-quality flooring solutions ideal for garage floors, patios, covered porches, and more.

The Craftsmen

Luke and Serena Wilson opened Coastal Stone Flooring in April of 2022 after visiting Charleston while on vacation. Both having worked for her father’s business, Nature Stone, for over fifteen years, they wanted to continue his legacy by bringing his innovative product down to the Lowcountry. “We fell in love with this city and the community, and we saw a need for this product here, especially due to the tumultuous South Carolina climate,” Luke explains.

The Process

After an initial consultation, a Coastal Stone Flooring representative works with the homeowner to figure out the perfect stone choice for the designated surface area. “We offer a variety of colors, so the homeowners are able to choose a stone that will look great with their home,” Luke says. On installation day, the Coastal Stone Flooring team mixes the hand-selected natural river stones with

their patent-pending epoxy on-site. It is handtroweled over the existing concrete, sealing the stones to reveal a durable surface. The transformed outdoor living space is ready to use in twenty-four hours of installation.

The Product

Providing a long-lasting service for homeowners to enjoy is one of the many reasons Luke and Serena are so passionate about their work. “There are many benefits to Coastal Stone Flooring. It’s two to three times stronger than normal concrete, it does not stain, it’s easy to clean, will not mold, and corrects unevenness. The magic to this flooring solution is it tests at one perm or greater vapor transmission, meaning the moisture that comes through the concrete will be able to breathe through our product, so Coastal Stone will not lift or peel like other coatings,” Luke expresses.

Can you tell our readers a little bit about Arnett Custom Homes?

We have been in business for fourteen years. We specialize in custom homes, large scale remodels and renovations. We are also a design-build firm, so homeowners can come to us to design their home and we quarterback the entire design process from beginning to end, which I have found to be incredibly successful.

What were the homeowner’s goals and expectations for this home build?

We provided our clients a questionnaire in order to get a better understanding of what kind of features they wanted for each space. One of those features included a hidden pantry in the kitchen. We have been doing more hidden rooms in about every other house we are building, which is fun to incorporate making each home unique.

What are some other unique features?

Installing the shiplap vertically, was a unique detail in this coastal Charleston home. It was nice to have the homeowner’s blessing to change up the normal shiplap design. The master bathroom needed to be functional and easy to navigate.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love the creative process. I love the challenges and opportunities that construction presents and developing solutions to those problems. I enjoy challenging myself by creating things that I have never done before, and our goal is always to have a successful build at the end.

COASTAL CREEK DESIGN

What did the homeowners want for their home?

This home sits beside gorgeous marsh views from almost all sides. They wanted to be able to enjoy that view no matter what room they were in. The entire backside of the home has large scale windows and accordion glass doors that can turn any room in the home into an indoor/outdoor living space.

Which room was your favorite space to design?

I would have to say the master bathroom. Again, you have a wonderful view of the marsh near the bathroom vanities, but we also wanted to create a functional and private bathing and shower space. We also got to play with eighteen-foot ceilings on the main floor, twelve-foot ceilings on the second level, and eight-foot ceilings on the third level, which was a lot of fun.

What was the most challenging part of this architectural design?

This home’s plot of land is in the shape of a pie slice. It is very narrow in the front and widens as you get closer to the marsh. Therefore, the home is unique in that aspect, but it was challenging to get the design to sit proportionally. Once you are inside, you can see why it was designed that way. The marsh views truly dictated how wide we were able to design the home.

What is your favorite part about being an Architectural Designer?

I get to help property owners visualize their dream home. When we have that initial consultation on their plot of land, we can start choosing what features they want to include. What do they want in terms of view, and how do they want the sun to rise or set on their home. Being a part of those verbal conversations and then delivering what they envisioned is just a joy for me.

IOLA MODERN

Which space was the most challenging to design?

The family entertainment room upstairs. The room is long and narrow and has large windows on both sides filling the space with light. However, the objective was to create a dark, moody space to watch movies. I painted the room near black and completed the space with a low-profile mohair sofa and lounge, which enhanced the “chill” vibe.

The homeowner really liked the idea of having a mid-century aesthetic but still liked coastal, so we incorporated a pair of ivory crypton-covered sofas in a mid-century silhouette and accented them with two custom chartreuse velvet lounge chairs from Denmark. The pop of green against the walnut frames and the white oak floors, brings a breath of fresh air to the space.

What was your favorite room to design?

I would have to say my favorite space to design would be their daughter’s room. She already had this beautiful pink iron bed frame, so we pulled those colors onto the walls and furniture. We created an accent wall with Missoni wallpaper, which included pinks, purples, and orange hues. Her favorite piece of design is her ceiling fan with clear acrylic blades.

What were some unique designs incorporated into the master bathroom?

The light pendants hanging on either side of the bathroom mirrors, were originally purchased for the foyer, but after seeing them in person I realized these were better suited for her bathroom.

A Custom Couple’s Closet

Charleston Custom Closets designed and installed this custom closet system for homeowners who were looking for an alternative to the builder-grade wire shelving previously installed in their master bedroom closet.

The Setting:

This home was brand-new when it was purchased and in most new construction cases like these, the closets are outfitted by the builders with basic wire shelving that leaves an abundance of empty space on the walls and doesn’t allow for adjustments. Because of the lack of functionality, the homeowners couldn’t fit both of their wardrobes at the same time. This led to an unmanageable mess and the serious need for a closet renovation.

The Problem:

Despite this master bedroom closet being large in size, the lack of vertical storage options made it difficult to maximize the existing space. The couple was in need of seasonal storage, adjustable shelves, and much more hanging space for the both of them. There was ample room above and below the basic wire shelf which presented itself as a complete waste of space.

The Solution:

Innovative closet customizations designed by Charleston Custom Closets allowed the homeowners to double up on their hanging and storage space and take full advantage of their once bare wall space with adjustable shelves fitted all the way to the ceiling for unlimited adjustments and access to every possible inch of visible and hidden storage space. Built-in drawers eliminate the need for bulky furniture and freed up floor space for shoe organization.

All in a Day’s Work

The experts at Ledford’s Termite & Pest Control, Inc. provide many different services to ensure a home’s safety and longevity. Charleston Home + Design gets a sneak peek into a day in the life of a Ledford’s termite technician.

7:30am

A Ledford’s termite technician reviews his scheduled appointments for the day and identifies which clients will need treatments. Before heading out, he mixes the necessary products and confirms his equipment is in working order.

8:30am

His first job of the day is an initial treatment of a slab foundation of a home to prevent subterranean termite infestation. This treatment comes with a warranty that requires a homeowner’s approval prior to the application.

9:30am - 11:30am

The process begins by creating an inconspicuous entry to access, inspect, and treat the tub and shower drains, as well as, drawing

a scaled diagram of the home. The exterior portion of the treatment consists of the technician trenching and treating the soil, drilling the slabs, injection treating, and patching the holes with mortar or plugs, as needed.

1:30pm

His afternoon appointment is an inspection for a yearly renewal of a client’s subterranean termite damage warranty. This stop includes inspecting the visible foundation and substructure of a home built with a crawlspace and an attached garage. He’s inspecting the home for any ground-based infestation of subterranean termites. Any leaks, wood destroying fungi, and other wood destroying insects are noted as well.

3:30pm

The final stop of the day is a CL100 inspection, which includes searching all the accessible areas of the exterior, attic spaces, living space, and the crawl space for evidence of any wood destroying insects, fungi, and their associated damages. Any findings are recorded with their locations for the homeowner and reviewed on site.

5:00pm

At the end of the day, the termite technician returns to the office, completes his remaining paperwork, and answers any new emails or phone calls.

Can you describe the process of relining a sewer pipe?

“We use the existing pipe in the ground as a conduit to install the new pipe. We jet the pipe for a clean host. We coil the pipe into a host drum, kind of like a sock if you will, and we use air pressure to put it into the existing pipe. We then use the calibration pipe like a balloon which forms the new lining. We cure the resin with a UV light to make it similar to a new PVC pipe inside of your old cast iron pipe.

What do you recommend for someone who works nights and needs to sleep during the day?

All of our products have a room darkening liner option. Our honeycomb and roller shades specifically have a light lock system that includes built-in channels on either side to filter out any sunlight or streetlights for maximum light blockage and complete darkness any time of day. Both of these products are very low maintenance and easy to clean. These treatments give the home a beachy coastal feel, something a lot of homeowners in Charleston are looking for.

We’re looking for any evidence of activity like the tubes they built with dirt, wood, whatever material they can manipulate for shelter. If it’s an aerial infestation, [the termite tubes] are typically going down, but we’re also looking for them coming up from the ground. A Turnkey Transformation

This whole home renovation and custom-built addition was managed from concept to completion by a local full-service design firm for an effortless turnkey homeowner experience.

What initially started as a two-bathroom makeover turned into a full home remodel with custom additions by PRD Custom Homes & Interiors, formerly known as Polished Renovations Home Designs. Owner and principal designer, Katelyn Irizarry completely redesigned the home’s original structure and orchestrated the entire project from start to finish for a total turnkey experience.

The original kitchen was too cramped for everyday use so

entertaining wasn’t even an option. They revamped the space by knocking out the surrounding walls and opening the kitchen up to the living room. This included adding built-in storage spaces with intentional organizational systems to better take advantage of living space.

For the warmth and feel of a fireplace without being too traditional, a modern gas firebox was used in the living room and encased in the same pecky cypress that accents the rest of the home. Reclaimed pecky cypress creates material harmony throughout

the home by way of repetition and hand milled reclaimed white oak hardwood flooring make for a warm and welcoming entrance from room to room.

Katelyn and her team completely redesigned the master bedroom to include a private sitting room, a much larger bathroom, and a walk-in closet, something the homeowners were dreaming of. Because the master suite sits off of the living room, a jib, or hidden door, was incorporated into an accent wall of hand-painted silk panels

to camouflage it to the main living space. Not only does the wallpaper make for an impressive optical illusion, but it anchors the living space in a gentle yet playful way.

As the renovation progressed, Katelyn and her team found opportunities to expand into the pockets of hidden space tucked away in the upstairs attic. In doing so, PRD Custom Homes & Interiors was able to completely reshape the interior of the second floor and almost doubled its living space. “Overall, we added about three thousand square feet

to the home and I can truly say we thought about every inch of this home and how it could be best used,” Katelyn says.

Above the garage, a new guest suite was built as well as an enclosed breezeway with pecky cypress and IPE wood for a durable outdoor living space and a welcoming guest entrance. The space is shaded with copper screening and oversized bermuda shutters for controlled sun exposure and provides a place to indulge in the benefits of indoor/ outdoor living.

Coastal Glamour

A rental property on Kiawah Island received a complete gut renovation and a tasteful redesign fit for guests seeking a comfortable and coastal atmosphere.

These Kiawah Island homeowners were in the early stages of their renovation project with High Tide Construction when they brought on full service interior designer, Amber Barron of Simply Curated Designs. The homeowners were interested in working with a professional like Amber who had prior remodeling management experience and the ability to have all of the hard and soft goods ready for installations. Because of this, her hand in the project ensured the renovation ran smoothly and efficiently, eliminating any potential stressors to guarantee homeowner satisfaction.

Beginning renovations in the bathroom, new selections of tile, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, and wallpaper transformed these once dated and dysfunctional spaces into gorgeous renter-friendly bathrooms. As the renovation progressed, the team focused on opening up the living spaces by building out a wider kitchen with a large island for a convenient place for guests to gather around.

portion of their time here despite listing it as a rental, incorporating their personal style into the design was of utmost importance. They didn’t want a plain and boring space like most rentals. Amber describes their style as, “a bit of coastal glam. Think bright and white with hints of gold, pops of color, and lots of texture.”

For rentability, the bedrooms were kept simple and each with an individual color scheme for variety. The pillows and drapery were custommade with close attention to the trim details which adds an unexpected element of luxury to each room. A lack of storage space prompted custom closet renovations including built-in drawers and strategically placed shelves and hanging space.

The home’s furnishings are an eclectic mix of coastal modern meets luxury with considerations including wear and tear from renter traffic. Soft linen blends, rattan, marble and velvet work in unison to create a comfortable coastal glam look. Amber mentions, her “favorite part of this project

has to be the beautiful wallpaper you see in the bathrooms as well as the mudroom. It really was the pop of color in these small spaces that make them so special.” ✴

All About That Brass

When it comes to the fine details of a home, the impact of well-selected plumbing fixtures cannot be overlooked. The builders of Russ Cooper & Associates began building their first spec house in West Ashley a couple years ago. A spec house is defined as a new house in which the home builder constructs with the intention and speculation of it selling easily. Working alongside Erika Wallace for the interior design and Norton Design Studio as the interior architect, Russ Cooper & Associates reached out to Ashley Hyer of Design on Tap to provide exquisite plumbing fixtures.

“Maria of Russ Cooper & Associates already had a vision of what she wanted for this house. I knew for a project of this caliber we were going to be installing nice, high-end fixtures,” Ashley states. To create a transitional home, the

interior design would require a mixture of traditional and modern styles, along with blending together masculine and feminine design elements.

A white apron front sink in the kitchen overlooks the front yard. “They wanted a kitchen that was going to appeal to a lot of different people and an apron front sink definitely does that. We see them in a lot of modern and traditional homes, so it’s a fixture that can run that gambit,” Ashley explains. The brass detailing is very evident throughout the entire kitchen from the backsplash, the curved range hood, the hanging pendants, and the faucets. “Mixed metals are a very popular trend at the moment, so Maria and Erika chose a black faucet with brass accents in the main sink, but we also wanted to connect the kitchen and the wet bar together,” she says. transitional aesthetic, a hammered brass sink was placed in the wet bar. “The hammered sink is purely a visual detail. While there are no benefits to having a hammered sink, the antique look and texture of this fixture works so perfectly for a home like this,” she states.

Outside of the master bedroom is a breakfast bar. This space was designed for potential homeowners to enjoy a cup of coffee without leaving their room. Another hammered sink with a satin nickel finish was installed here. “The hammered sink is a unique choice and should be a surprise when people see it. There is something very luxurious about it,” Ashley expresses. The master bathroom is a classic

white space with black and white marble countertops and floors. To add dimension and depth, black wallmount faucets were chosen above the vanity sinks and on the freestanding tub. The tub is nestled in a small nook inside the bathroom to create a relaxing space for a new homeowner to unwind.

Upstairs in the guest bathrooms are chrome shower fixtures. “Gone are the days when every bathroom had a tub-shower combination. From my experience, there is usually one kid-friendly tub and showers in the other guest bath,” she informs us. The laundry room was another space requiring fixtures from Design on Tap. Coastal Modernity

When Rhodes Construction starts a new build, they know just who to call for high-quality custom cabinetry. Enter Jay Valk, owner of Classic Kitchens of Charleston, who worked alongside Sammy Rhodes and his team to create functional storage spaces in more than just the kitchen. Together, they collaborated with interior designer Amelia Kerney who selected the home’s color palette and design aesthetic in an effort to embrace the homeowner’s wish for a clean and coastal modern aesthetic.

Just as important as the kitchen and wet-bar was the master bathroom, which features a custom underlit floating vanity with a sliding door for storage and built-in outlets. The backlit vanity mirrors allow for great lighting anytime of day and shines on the walls dressed in marble-veined polished tile. The custom vanity adds a level of sophistication to the dark gray herringbone style floor tiles and plumbing fixtures from Moluf’s Kitchen and Bath lend a modern aesthetic to the sink, shower, and freestanding tub. ✴

A couple from Ohio was interested in purchasing a home on the water but they weren’t all that familiar with the Lowcountry. Luckily, the Rush Team was able to offer them personal insight on life in Charleston and helped them find a home that would meet their needs after a slight renovation.

“My favorite part of this project was the fact that these clients were fearless. They weren’t afraid of color, pattern, and texture, which is liberating to a designer,” Terri mentions,

“they wanted a comprehensive look with a level of unexpectedness and creativity. They love mixed materials. In each space, you’ll find something that might not traditionally be styled together.”

The collected artwork reflects individual moments in the homeowner’s lives and played a massive role in decorative elements of the design. The homeowner’s willingness to see more contemporary pieces mixed with their antiques and artifacts offered a unique sense of personality to the space. “They saw their home as another work of art, just like another piece to their collection. We weren’t given any constraints and they were really open to the creative process. It was truly a pleasure to design,” Terri shares. ✴

Brave to Go Bold

Husband and wife duo, Graham and Jade Joyner created their interior design firm Metal + Petal in 2016 in Athens, Georgia, blending their love for interiors with their complementary, yet contrasting personal styles.

With a showroom and warehouse in Athens, they have recently expanded with a design studio in Charleston. “This home was one of our first projects in the Lowcountry. The homeowner had seen our work online and reached out to receive

our holistic full-service approach,” explains Jade.

When Jade and her team of designers began this project, the homeowners were initially leaning towards a more modern farmhouse design to match the home’s exterior, however, with a little encouragement from Jade, a very elevated and contemporary design unfolded. “She wanted pops of color and a mix of different elements throughout the shared areas including the foyer entrance, dining room, kitchen, living room, and the home office,” she describes.

After renovating their 1960’s ranch-style home in West Ashley, these homeowners hired the interior design masterminds behind Metal + Petal for a total transformation including bold colors, soft textures, and high-end furniture pieces.

The exterior of the home is considered traditional in nature, so Jade wanted to bring in contemporary touches as soon as the front door opens. Black painted grass cloth wallpaper dresses the foyer walls and pulls out the tones in the entry bench and iron railings, while a gold designed wallpaper by Rebecca Atwood offers movement up the stairwell. “This soft wallpaper next to the hard textures of the black grass cloth creates such a moment when you

enter the home,” she states. Off to the side of the foyer is the home office. A sight full of color and texture, Jade confesses this room is her favorite. “The homeowner already had this cool black and white abstract wallpaper, so we added these fun and vibrant window treatments and painted the ceiling maroon,” she says. Completely embracing this unique color palette of maroon, black, plum, and green, this home office is

overflowing with scrumptious details, like the beautiful, curved metal desk with a black ratan chair which sits in the middle of the room. On either side, floating shelves display the homeowner’s favorite décor items and books. the area,” Jade tells us. While there is a lot of movement in this space, the mood of the colors creates a calm, yet creative environment to work.

The homeowner wanted to make a statement with her dining room, so Jade installed a large structural fixture to showcase the space and added a hand-crafted, hand rubbed black wooden table with surrounding cane chairs. “One of my favorite features of this room are these gorgeous contemporary geometric draperies. They are so funky and brighten up the whole space,” Jade explains. To incorporate more of the homeowner’s personal pieces, her China cabinet was placed in the far corner displaying a collection of unique glassware.

design; it serves as a pass-through space. Jade styled the floating shelves with contemporary touches and painted the island black to connect with the dining room table. On the other side of the kitchen is a squared, sunken living room. “I created soft touches into this common area by adding a curved sofa and used high quality, and unique furniture pieces to elevate the whole space,” she describes. Jade attributes her love of travel as the key to keeping her designs fresh. “Getting outside of my norm and experiencing new cultures is where I feel most inspired. I don’t want to design a home for you, I want to help you create a space that will rise to meet you,” she tells us. ✴

Tastefully placed lighting fixtures make all the difference in a new home build. Teri Edwards of Carolina Lanterns & Lighting explains how she assisted in the lighting design of this Daniel Island home.

When Cline Homes began building this custom home on Daniel Island, they reached out to a company they have a long-standing relationship with, Carolina Lanterns & Lighting, to provide show-stopping light fixtures throughout the home. Lighting specialist Teri Edwards worked together with the homeowners and interior designers to select beautiful fixtures that fit the homeowner’s desired taste.

“The process of lighting selections with a new client begins by reviewing the electrical plans, soon to be followed up with a one-on-one appointment in our showroom. After the initial lighting

selections have been made, a trip to the job site is necessary to ensure the selections will work in their respective locations. I would say that our focus in our lighting selections meeting is to make sure we carry a cohesive style throughout the home that meets the homeowner's taste. Every customer that I meet with has their own vision and personal style and it is exciting making that vision come to life,” explains Teri.

Wanting a coastal, yet transitional interior design the homeowner desired fixtures with texture, brass details, and strong lines. In the dining area, a large brass candle chandelier hangs above the table. “The dining room in this home

overlooks the marsh on Daniel Island, surrounded by windows on all sides. Our goal in this room was to avoid selecting a fixture that may block this gorgeous view,” she states. Next to the dining area is the kitchen, where two large pendants are suspended above the island. “I loved being able to incorporate the ‘Bumble Pendant’ by Ro Sham Beaux, a local manufacturer on this project. The ‘Bumble Pendant’ is full of natural textures; paired with brass hardware,” Teri expresses.

The powder bathroom is a unique space with bright colorful wallpaper. "This small space allows you to have fun when selecting one-of-a-kind wallpaper, a decorative mirror and pairing with a fun and lively light fixture,” she says. A bronze mirror hangs on the wall and complements the overall space with a brass vanity light placed above.

The master bedroom was built with high ceilings and blush pink walls. An exquisite three-blade Spitfire fan was installed in the center of the room. This fixture is designed with smooth edges and comes with three forward and reverse speeds. “The Spitfire fan is one of our most popular selections as of now,” Teri confesses.

Hanging in the master bathroom is a beautiful custom-made beaded chandelier from Ro Sham Beaux. “The homeowner

handpicked these colors and beads. She wanted a glamorous fixture with natural elements. The teal dyed hemp paired with the ombre pink, purple, and pearl details allow for just that,” she explains. The homeowners also have their own vanity stations decorated with brass mirrors. Teri placed a total of four brass wall sconces to complement the mirrors.

When it comes to lighting selections for new homeowners, Teri advises to not overthink the process. “There are so many options, and it can get overwhelming. Know what you like, but also take into consideration where in your home you want these fixtures to go. What are the other elements of the space?” she explains.

Lighting fixtures can make a statement and the creative minds behind these designs are only getting started. “Our vendors and suppliers are creating so many cool designs that the selections are endless. Lighting is no longer just a source of light; it plays an active role in how a room looks and feels,” states Teri. ✴

Happy Kitchen, Happy Home

After combining two households into one, this homeowner called upon the expertise of a cabinet optimization and shelving company to provide several storage solutions throughout her Summerville home.

Amonth after this homeowner moved her family and her father into this Summerville home, she knew she would need assistance creating organized and functional spaces for all their kitchen and bathroom needs. “I had heard such great things about ShelfGenie, so I reached out and was put in touch with designer, Julie Blumetti,” the homeowner says.

Julie has been a professional organizer for many years but began working for ShelfGenie in 2021. “What made this project special and so amazing, was that the homeowners

knew exactly what they wanted. They knew their end goals and what was important to them,” Julie explains.

A lover of baking, this homeowner wanted to have accessible, easy to navigate drawers, cabinets, and a large pantry. She also wanted to make sure her father’s things were incorporated into these spaces as well, so that he felt comfortable and at ease.

“We placed our innovative glideout shelves in their bottom kitchen cabinets, creating top and bottom rows within the cabinets allowing for optimum storage space,” Julie states.

the top cabinet next to the stove. “She cooks all the time, so making sure she has everything she needs all within an arm’s reach was super important to this design,” she says.

The pantry is the pride and joy of this kitchen. There are wooden shelves on either side of the space reaching all the way to the top and two Lazy Susans in the center compartments for maximum storage and accessibility. The pantry is organized by types of foods and meals for the day. The top shelves house holiday kitchen décor.

“There are so many things about this pantry that I love. I am so happy with how well it was designed for me. Everything has a place and it’s easy to navigate,” the homeowner continues, “I also love that when my father opens the pantry door, he sees many of his own cooking items he’s kept throughout his life.”

In the master bathroom, Julie designed glide-out risers which were specifically cut out around the plumbing underneath the vanity sinks. “The idea behind these shelves is to have them on top of one another, so that the homeowner doesn’t have to bend down and search for their hair products. Functionality is key for these kinds of spaces,” Julie describes.

After combining two households into one, these homeowners are ecstatic with how their kitchen and bathroom spaces have turned out. “Seeing the reactions from homeowners after installation is complete is just the best. Especially, when you know just how much our services were needed,” says Julie. ✴

Bridge to Paradise

A local landscape company transformed this home’s outdoor living space with a comprehensive landscape design including a new drainage system and multiple hardscapes.

Yellowstone Landscape has recently transitioned into residential landscaping after fifteen years working exclusively on commercial properties. This homeowner noticed their trucks in his neighborhood and was impressed by the gradual transformation of his neighbor’s lawn. He called for a consultation and was promptly scheduled to meet with Yellowstone’s landscape designers, Cory Hendrix, and Robert Snyder, who surveyed the existing landscape to identify its problems and solutions. They then worked to create a landscape design that would complement the property on all sides and elevate the homeowner’s outdoor living experience and curb appeal.

Beginning as most Lowcountry landscape projects do, a full drainage system by JWC Construction was installed prior to any other groundwork. The soil in Charleston tends to retain a lot of water and prompts ground movement, so tackling the drainage issues first thing allowed them to move forward and lay the foundations for the variety of hardscapes.

Once all of the runoff water was redirected by way of meandering rock beds with built-in drains, the larger landscape elements began to take shape and created visual structure. The existing plant life wasn’t bad, it just needed some more decoration and intention to be brought to its

full potential. The team at Yellowstone Landscape was able to supplement the existing lawn space with specialty elements like the IPE wood bridge over the Mexican beach pebble river. A new limestone driveway was built using HydraShed permeable pavers from SiteOne Stone Center and Lowcountry Pavers for natural looking texture. Palm trees of all shapes and sizes sourced from Long Branch Nursery add tropical shade and clean sight lines to both the front and back yards.

After reinstalling the pool deck with travertine and planting new trees and shrubs, a HardeeWall planting bed

was built for added privacy of those lounging poolside and provides vertical planting space to supplement some of the gardening space lost to the pool and its hardscape elements. Outdoor lighting from SiteOne Stone Center makes this outdoor space easy to traverse after the sun sets for visibility and safety.

Decorative concrete cutouts accent the back patio and brown mulch fills the flower beds with natural contrast against the shrubs and ground covers from Green Dynamix. To bring other parts of the yard back up to ground level, Yellowstone installed layers of Zeon Zoysia sod for bright and vibrant grassland.

The entire project took about four months due to weather and product delays but the homeowners couldn’t be happier with the end result. “We love communicating with the clients and making the landscape something they are proud of,” lead landscaper Cory Hendrix explains, “we truly care about the work we do.” ✴

When it comes to the “art of antiquing,” the experts at Charleston’s oldest antique mall have utilized their creative eye to locate and identify genuine, one-of-a-kind, vintage items that continue to stand the test of time.

Decorating with antiques stems from our inherent desire to connect with our past and tell a story. Incorporating vintage items into a modern living space adds character and history that goes beyond the home itself. The juxtaposition of old pieces mixed in with modern interior designs is a popular trend among a newer generation of homeowners. Camille Wish, owner of Terrace Oaks Antiques gives her professional opinion on how to design with antiques successfully.

“Antiques are unique. These items are not mass-produced, so you won’t see them in your friend’s houses. People will see these pieces and immediately

want to know the story behind it,” she says with passion.

While there aren’t any set rules to buying antiques, Camille’s advice is to follow your gut. “If you’re in a store and you instantly fall in love with an item, buy it. You will never regret buying it because you’ll be able to design around that piece for the rest of your life,” she says. Terrace Oaks Antiques has a twenty-four hour hold policy for customers who might need a little bit more time to contemplate a potential purchase. “We hear from customers who are unsure about buying a specific product and without putting it on hold, they call the next day, but that item has already been sold,” she states.

Camille Wish of Terrace Oaks Antiques

Camille offers a few tips when it comes to decorating a living space with antique pieces; start with one single item. Next, study the colors, the textures, and the size. Find what elements of the piece you enjoy most or want to bring out. “Don’t be afraid to incorporate several pieces from different eras and styles together, but make sure to place them strategically. The room should feel alive, not dated,” she suggests.

One misconception about antiquing is that it can sometimes be confused with thrifting, and while the concepts might be similar, Camille believes there is something extra special about antiquing. “Stores like Terrace Oaks feature items that have been around for decades, centuries even. The value in that kind of history is unmatched,” she continues, “currently any items originating from the 1960s’ or early ‘70s are considered vintage, while items made over one hundred years ago are considered antiques.”

Another misconception is that antique stores don’t keep up with contemporary trends, however Camille couldn’t disagree more. “Of course, there are trends in the antique community, specifically in décor.

Years ago, everything seemed to be white, silver, and blue; very coastal but now we are seeing an uptick in items with warmer tones and a lot of brass. The trends follow the magazines,” she tells us.

A fast-growing trend Camille has noticed within the last couple years is a younger generation of homeowners wanting to furnish their homes with pieces their grandparent’s had. Referred to as “grandgens," Camille explains that this trend is because these homeowners are realizing the furniture being sold at big corporate stores are meant to be temporary, whereas furniture found in antique stores are meant to be kept forever.

Terrace Oaks Antiques opened in 1988, quickly becoming the Lowcountry’s primary antique destination with Camille being one of their original dealers. She went on to buy the store in 2005 and has never looked back, no pun intended. “We are a ‘mall co-op’ business, hosting around ninety independent antique vendors that occupy many booths throughout our two-level store front,” Camille describes. With so many antique vendor booths to browse through, customers will experience an eclectic mix of taste and style with items such as jewelry, art, first edition books, vinyl albums, furniture, toys, vintage clothes, and more. ✴

The homeowners of this Edisto beach property enlisted the creative minds behind Mount Pleasant Kitchen and Bath to design a kitchen and bathroom for the vacation home of their dreams.

When it comes to building a new home, the interior design options are endless. Next, Peter and the homeowners completed a site visit measuring each room and to get an overall feel of the space. “These homeowners wanted a beach house retreat they could also use as a rental,” he explains. home as a rental property. “We made any necessary size adjustments and placed the order. When the cabinets arrived, we set up an installation date for the cabinets and another for the flooring,” explains Peter.

LVP flooring, or luxury vinyl plank was installed through the home. LVP is a durable, yet affordable alternative to hardwood flooring. White shiplap blankets the kitchen walls while single panel sky blue cabinetry with brass hardware gives a sophisticated appeal to this shared space. Former Elle.com fashion editor and co-founder of the innovative sculpting swimwear line, STYLEST, Alia Yahia-Bosworth has proven that with a hard work ethic and a creative imagination, any dream is possible. The self-proclaimed “renovation-junkie” invites us into her newly updated Daniel Island home, where she designed each space to be even more extravagant than the next.

Throughout her life, Alia Yahia-Bosworth [pronounced Ah-lee-ah Ya-he-ah] has learned the value of a dollar. The oldest of seven children and the daughter of an Algerian immigrant, it was instilled from a young age that with determination, perseverance, and heart, she could accomplish anything. The desire for a creative career path led Alia to the Big Apple where she landed her first job as a fashion assistant for Vanity Fair . Almost two decades later with an impressive resume to match, Alia cofounded the sensational body sculpting swimsuit brand, STYLEST. During the pandemic, Alia and her family relocated to the Lowcountry and planted roots on Daniel Island. With a new baby on the way, Alia transformed their classic Charleston Single into an electric explosion of modern and glamorous vignettes and décor in only three months.

Queen of the Castle

After visiting Charleston in 2020, Alia and her husband Jamie fell in love with the city and decided to pack up their life up North and moved to the South, just two months later. “Originally, we were living in another house on the south side of Charleston, when I received a call from our realtor Jacquie Dinsmore of Southern Yankee Homes, saying she found this classic coastal home on Daniel Island,” she explains. Having just moved to the Lowcountry six months prior, Alia was hesitant to move again. With a little encouragement and

curiosity, Alia and Jamie visited the Daniel Island home and immediately put in an offer. The charm of this Charleston Single architecture captured Alia’s heart, “I love the layout of the house and the double piazzas on the side. The bones of this build were fantastic, and it had a lot of potential,” she says.

Inspired by her big family and Algerian heritage, Alia wanted her new home to include multiple spaces for people to gather. “Throughout the house, we

designed a variety of vignettes, so when friends and family come to visit it will feel welcoming and fun,” Alia describes. Mixing modern designs with old-world elements was her approach to this home remodel. She made sure to design the home to not only match her lifestyle, but also that of her husband and her two stepsons, Jack and James. “It was important for me to find a balance to make it all work together. I didn’t want to have a museum home, where the rooms are just for show. I believe a home needs to be livable,” she expresses.

Hanging Art

Two large structural pendants bring unique shapes and movement into the kitchen and dining room.

The trick was incorporating both masculine and feminine touches into each space, making the rooms comfortable, yet glamorous.

The home’s exterior exemplifies classic Charleston architecture, similar to homes you see in the historic district downtown. White siding, columns, and gas lanterns paint a traditional Lowcountry facade; however, a surprise awaits as you enter the front door. What once was an unused sitting room has been revamped into a show stopping cocktail room off the foyer. High-gloss black lacquer paint by Farrow & Ball covers every inch of wall space. Dark monochromatic tones in this room yearn for a statement like the crystal sputnik pendant from CB2. Brass shelves anchor the walls and display black and white family photos. In the center of the space, four black and brass chairs face the middle creating the ultimate social

setting to enjoy good conversations and an even better old fashioned.

The kitchen was one of the first spaces to receive a makeover. “Super White” quartz from AGM Imports was placed on the kitchen countertops, while a black and white Panda marble backsplash and island create dimension. A striking black and brass range hood was custom designed by Hoodsly and complements the brass hardware on the cabinetry. An oversized black iron pendant from Tech Lighting suspends from the ceiling over the waterfall edge island. “I wanted a nontraditional fixture; something like hanging art. I love the sculpted metal details,” she expresses.

Alia wanted her home office to be a space that exudes happiness. She accomplished this through symmetry, balance, and harmony. “My personality is

big and colorful, and although I really enjoy darker, moodier tones, I also love bright colors. Throughout the house I played with monochromatic textures but in here I wanted to create light, happy vibes,” she continues, “I wanted a place that wouldn’t be too overstimulating, but also a place I could pull inspiration from when working on new swimsuit designs.”

She added pops of color through her book collection and a vibrant neon sign, complete with touches of texture on her vintage armchairs with Schumacher Vanderbilt fabric, Alia

was able to create a private oasis for her creative ideas to flow.

Upstairs sits a second monochromatic blue sitting room. “Blue is our family color. I wanted to make sure this was represented fully in our home,” she says. An overdyed rug from Manhattan Rugs blankets the floor and a white and brass sputnik pendant from KCO Lighting covers the ceiling. White textured bouclé chairs from Mafille La Maison add textural contrast and are accented by blue patterned pillows. A gorgeous blue wave painting from local

artist, Justin W. Cox is a statement piece that incorporates the hues of the space. Eight black bookcases from Ethan Allen sit along the wall to create an elegant library of color coordinated book décor.

Large windows frame the master bedroom providing ample natural light. Adding a dramatic touch, custom velvet drapes hang from each window with brass tie backs; a great example of masculine and feminine elements working together. A fun bubble pendant hangs above their master bed,

dressed in dark blue patterned bedding and pillows from House of Nomad. Matching perigold wall mirrors, side tables, and lamps create symmetry and balance, while the “Plummet” matte painted walls and “Railings” high gloss painted trim and doors from Farrow & Ball create a calm atmosphere for sleep.

Lillian’s nursery was designed from a non-traditional perspective. “I wanted her room to fit in with the rest of the home’s design, but also be transitional as she grows up,” explains Alia. A vibrant Lulu & Georgia jungle wallpaper accents one wall while a light pink paint covers the remaining space. A functional black Delta crib adds depth and a banana leaf pendant from CB2 accentuates the jungle theme. Like mother, like daughter, Lillian’s name shines bright in another hot pink neon sign from Sketch & Etch, adding a little funk to this modern nursery.

“There is so much you can do to elevate the look of your home without tearing down the walls. We didn’t move any of the walls in this house. We worked with the spaces we had and used materials to exaggerate the interior to be what we wanted,” Alia advises.

Becoming Alia

Hailing from Waukesha, Wisconsin, Alia loved being creative. “My parents were very supportive of my creative endeavors. I was active in theatre, painting, music, and writing,” she remembers. Her mom worked as an elementary school gym teacher and owned a children’s consignment shop with Alia’s father. “My mom is amazing. She worked two jobs and had seven kids; she is a huge inspiration for me as far as entrepreneurship and everything women can handle in this multi-layered life,” she states. Alia helped out at her parent’s store when she was twelve years old and then proceeded to get her first job working at the GAP when she was fifteen. She gives credit to her Algerian father who introduced her to different cultures early on. “For me, my life has always been diverse. My dad made sure to expose us to many different ways of life, so we understood just how blessed we were to have the things we had,” Alia states.

New Girl in Town

In college, Alia majored in journalism and set her eyes on New York City. Not knowing a soul, she took a leap of faith and moved

Monkeying Around

An animated jungle wallpaper accents Lillian’s room along with brass details

to the concrete jungle when she was twenty-one. Alia then landed a life-altering interview with nationally renowned fashion magazine, Vanity Fair. “I literally knew nothing about fashion. All I knew was I wanted to do something creative. I thought ‘Vanity Fair is like really fancy,’ so, I knew I needed to look my best,” she recalls, “I went to Banana Republic and I bought a white silk polka-dot pencil skirt, then I went to Nine West and bought a pair of red patent leather squaretoed heels. I paired those with a kid’s NY Yankees t-shirt and I thought I was killing it. I walked into Condé Nast, which was like The Devil Wears Prada and everyone was dressed head-to-toe in designer fashion, and I still thought “Wow, I am crushing this!” To Alia’s surprise, she landed the job as the new fashion assistant to Fashion Director, Elizabeth Saltzman. “I give her full credit for starting my career because she took a chance on me,” says Alia. As she worked closely with Elizabeth, eventually Alia was promoted to being Vanity Fair’s accessories editor by the time she was twenty-four.

She Better “Werk”

After working in the fashion publication industry for over seventeen years, Alia has added some rather impressive brand names and experiences to her resume like being the senior market editor for Vitals Magazine and working as the special projects editor for Elle.com, where she was given creative license and a weekly column. Wanting to branch out into the business side of fashion, Alia became the trends director for Ann Taylor, where she was able to travel to cities like Paris and Milan, buy samples, and create mood boards for the following year’s designs. Becoming the go-to girl for all things trends and marketing, she was promoted to being the chief style and marketing director where she learned more about women's psychology and their emotional attachment to how they dress. “Women tend to remember what they were wearing in pivotal life moments,” she explains, “understanding this mindset is huge for running a fashion business.”

Becoming Mrs. Bosworth

Spending most of her early adulthood working and traveling, Alia didn’t feel rushed to settle down. “I traveled all over the

place. I lived in Portugal and in London. I had a ton of friends and I liked going out,” she remembers. That was until she met former Callaway Golf Executive turned Private Equity Founder, James [Jamie] Bosworth at a New York Athletic Club. “I thought I would be Carrie Bradshaw in a feather dress on the subway with my kids at fifty years old,” Alia expresses, “Meeting Jamie and the boys [Jack and James] changed my life in the most wonderful way and gave me a new perspective. Being near them was my priority.” A year after meeting Jamie, she moved to Connecticut to start a new chapter with the Bosworths. In 2020, Alia, Jamie, and their family moved to Charleston.

Ultimate Mom Boss

Watching her mother teach, raise children, and run her own business inspired Alia to become the powerhouse businesswoman she is today. “My mom taught me how to have a big life and to realistically prioritize to make sure the fire is always burning,” Alia states. Excited to be a part of this blended family, Alia says she won the lottery with her two stepsons. “I am so proud of them and the relationship we have created together. Both Jack and James are golfers at Seton Hall University and are just wonderful young men.” Shortly after moving to

Charleston, Alia and Jamie found out they were expecting their daughter, Lillian. “Having kids has been the best thing that ever happened to me,” she confirms. Determined to show Lillian the many possibilities hard work and an imagination can bring, Alia’s fire continues to burn bright.

The STYLEST System

The inspiration behind STYLEST sparked at a pool party in Millbrook, New York in 2020. Alia’s good friend and Harper’s BAZAAR’s Editor, Joyann King Michael had recently moved to the area and wanted to meet new friends. She invited Alia over for a pool party and it was there that one of her guests and now STYLEST's product guru, Chrissy McCurdy, confessed she was wearing a bra under her swimsuit and had been for years. “She had a difficult time finding any swimsuit line that offered her the support and modesty she desired,” Alia recalls. This problem was something Alia had never thought about; surely swimwear lingerie already existed but after researching the next day, Alia and Joyann discovered

that this product didn’t. “Joyann, Chrissy, and I decided to invent Aqualingerie™, a waterproof bra that is designed to dry as fast as your swimsuit,” she proudly states. Along with swim bras, the team has also created the world’s most fashionable sculpting swim and beachwear.

What's Next?

The STYLEST crew are planning to expand their reach into sportswear with a pickle ball collection launching in the spring and activewear set to launch in the fall. Alia is continuing to fulfill her passion of interior design renovations by blending Southern style with a city chic upgrade throughout the Charleston area. Creating time and space to prioritize her life and what is important has been Alia’s most enjoyable life lesson. “Right now, I am working on three home design projects, running STYLEST daily, working within my community to volunteer, and being a mom. I feel great- I've found my balance,” she expresses.

TheWallpaper Renaissance

Wallpaper is back and better than ever. We speak with renowned wallpaper and textile designer Rebecca Atwood, and some of the Lowcountry’s top interior designers for insight on wallpaper trends and how to incorporate them in your home.

The history of wallpaper can be dated back to the Middle Ages when large extravagant tapestries were hung from the ceiling in wealthy upper-class homes. Throughout the centuries, wallpaper was used to transform homes; the more eccentric, the better. From soft and subtle prints to large-scale patterns and colorful designs, wallpaper makes a statement in any design. While many home and design professionals predicted the wallpaper industry would bottom-out in the latter half of the twentieth century, over the past five years, it has made an impressive comeback with no plateau in sight. 2023 wallpaper trends include muted maximalism, paneled designs, murals, 70’s retro prints, faux textures, botanicals, and large-scale prints.

How did you get started creating wallpaper/textiles?

I studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Post college, I worked as a design director and trend forecaster and design consultant for large brands like Anthropologie, Bloomingdales, and Kate Spade. After a few years, I decided to start my own textile line where I was hand painting, dying, and printing all the fabric myself. Now, I work with various production partners to scan and print my hand painted designs.

Describe the wallpaper in this space. This bedroom includes my "Arches" wallpaper in

both grass and parchment colors. This design was created around the concepts of wide fields and rolling hills. I wanted to create something with round shapes but also incorporating the textures of grass.

What are some of your most popular wallpaper designs?

The “Blooms” pattern is one of our bestselling wallpaper designs. We also sell a lot of textural, small scale, tonal patterns. Printing on grass cloth is a new thing for us and is fun, too.

If you are doing a large area, I recommend choosing a neutral print that flows with the rest of the space. Save the colorful, bold patterns for smaller spaces like a laundry/mudrooms, playrooms, and powder rooms.

A ceiling is really fun, and it just adds a pop of unexpectedness to the space. A powder room will always be a safe space to go bold, or even a laundry room can be a great a place for wallpaper.

Wallpaper is like fashion, where it comes back in cycles. People go from wanting a lot of color or patterns with more ornate décor, to wanting a more minimalistic and simple interior design.

I knew I wanted to add an edgy pattern to this music room. The walls felt too busy with all the instruments and furniture, but the ceiling was begging for more. I decided to go with a wallpaper that is masculine but with an unexpected geometric pattern in a wood tone on tone.

Today’s style has changed from being very colorful, patterned and over accessorized, to a cleaner look with more solid, neutral furnishings. Wallpaper is a great way to add interest to a clean and simple space.

I am a sucker for a wallpapered coat closet. Yes, it’s behind a door most of the time, but it is such a nice surprise when you open the door.
