8 A cute biochar deodorizer that loves to hang itself in your car!

01

RESEARCH This project required students to develop a “Container for Indoor Deodorizer which covers the design problem solving process. Deodorizers are materials that neutralize odiferous molecules by absorbing or destroying them. They remove bad smell in air, within room, or confined spaces. Bamboo biochar is one kind of manufactured biochar. Bamboo is burnt to make bamboo charcoal. Bamboo biochar has a highly micro-porous physical structure that leads to its high absorption of odiferous molecules. Its absorption power is more than ten times that of wood charcoal.

OBJECTIVE

CONCEPT

Unpleasant odors are frequently found in car that may caused by microorganisms, weather, food pieces, other substances and so on. There are actually many air fresheners existing in the market. However, air fresheners secretly harm human’s health and respiratory system because of its chemical substances. Therefore, I decided to develop a biochar air deodorizer which can be installed and function easily in cars. By using natural material bamboo biochar, my air deodorizer can eliminate odors naturally and harmlessly.

CONCEPT

IDEATION

The hugging tree behaviour and cute appearance of koala bear as inspiration for my container design of car deodorizer. Koala bear as the air deodorizer, while car’s hand holder as the tree. I’ve decided to choose cotton fabric as my final product material. This is because its breathability that can allow the bamboo biochar inside to absorb odiferous molecules in air, its durability, washable properties and so on.

MODEL MAKING Preparation of materials and tools such as cotton material, cotton filling. scissor, sticky straps, invisible zip and so on.

Attaching the functional parts, invisible zip and sticky straps. Sewing the eyes, nose and scarf detailing. Sewing the head, body, legs, hands, ears and so on part by part.

FURNITURE DESIGN Concept of segmentation that solves problem of limitation of seats available, accurate design of an ergonomic bench, and futuristic form of bench design.

02M I L L C U R V

RESEARCH Biomimicry also known as nature form. It is an innovation inspired by the nature and the immitation models, systems and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. This group project requires students to design a natural form inspired bench based on different target location, learning how to develop new innovative furniture design inspired by a biological phenomenon, and implement natural principles into a creative design concept, structure and mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE

CONCEPT

The Curve is probably the single most popular mall among expats that live in Kuala Lumpur. It is located outside of Kuala Lumpur city center, within Petaling Jaya. The Curve was designed fully curve no matter its inside or outside of the mall. Besides from the building, patterns and facilities in the shopping mall were designed in curvy shapes as well. This happens same to the design of the bridge that connects to the opposite building. Thus, we can see that the shops are linked to each other and it forms a circle or curvy shape via connection. Our group decided to choose The Curve as our target location. We aimed to design an ergonomic bench with futuristic form and curvy concept that solves problem of limitation of seats available in The Curve shopping mall.

CONCEPT

Effect of fluctuation and hard structure from coral shell applied in the bench design.

IDEATION

Circulation and segmentation concept from millipede.

COLOUR STUDY Brown colour represents organic and wholesome. White colour indicates purity, simplicity, and minimalism.

PINO PUZZLE GAME EDUCATIONAL TOY DESIGN A conceptual educational toy for kids who are aged 4 years and above. This toy design project is in cooperation with SUNTA Toys Sdn. Bhd.

-Built Your WorldThe logo above is created as the trademark for our toy product. The interlocking between the alphabet “PINO representing the interlocking concept of our puzzle game system.

RESEARCH This is a group project with 14 weeks. This project required us to develop an educational toy which can improve learning development in kids which age ranged 4 years old to 6 years old. Our group had visited a montessori kindergarten for research purpose. We found that montessori toys can help improve kids’ cognitive development, motor development, social development and emotional development. From the interview with principal of kindergarten, kids enjoy playing lego, wooden blocks and some constructional toys. However, they can't share their toys with other kids and would often fight over toys. Therefore, we decided to create a toy which involves constructing concept and socializing concept.

OBJECTIVE - To develop kids’ spatial skill and cognitive thinking. - To encourage kids communicating and socializing with each other throughout the game. - To improve kid’s creativity and imagination. - To encourage kids associating different buildings, transport or objects in our real life regarding to different landscape

There are 25 pieces of puzzle mat in one set of toy. There different landscape graphics and numbering on each puzzle mat.

There are 5 sets of 14 different foam blocks in one set of the toy. The foam blocks vary in shape and colours.

There are 2 stacks of cards, puzzle card and block card. Blue puzzle card indicates which puzzle mat that kid player will be in. Red block card indicates number of blocks that can be taken to build things .

There are 4 chessmen in one set of the toy. The chessman is for creating character based on kids’ creativity.

HOW TO PLAY? Number of players: maximum 4 people Toy materials: puzzle mats, chessman, playing cards, EVA foam blocks, and non-permanent marker. 1. Assemble the puzzle mats randomly, without following the number on them. 2. Four players take turn to pick a puzzle card and a block card for each round. 3. The number on puzzle card indicates which puzzle mat the player will build the things on. The number on block card indicates how many that the player will use to build things on mat. 4. Players are encouraged to build something related to the lanscape graphic on the puzzle mat. 5. The chessman can be drawn and placed on the mat during the game. 6. Game finish when the puzzle mat is full.

Landscape graphic design on the puzzle mats includes water (sea, lake or river etc), sand, concrete cement, grass, and soil.

S K I L L S I believe that besides of the skills we obtained from Industrial Design course, soft skills are important too if a person wishes to work in a team. Therefore, besides focusing on academic projects, I keep myself active in participating various activities and improving my skills like communication, socializing, teamwork building, and most importantly time management.
