For the first time, all programs in the College of Architecture, Art, and Design are coming together in the same location on Mississippi State University’s Starkville campus. This provides an opportunity to create a space that promotes collaboration between the programs and to design educational spaces that allow students to cultivate their creativity. Starkville has traditionally used materials such as brick and metal in the design of its downtown area. Many well known buildings on campus also follow this design idea. Buildings like Lee Hall, Montgomery Hall, and Giles Hall have become iconic landmarks on campus and are clearly recognizable to visitors. The renovation for Howell Hall follows the design of these structures, making it a cohesive part of MSU. In addition, the similar attributes bridge campus to community.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

This renovation proposal seeks to create a space that best accomodates the Department of Art, Building Construction Science, and the Interior Design Program in the CAAD campus with functionality and style. The exposed ceiling treatments will give height to the studios and create the illusion of a more open space. The use of existing metal structures and large glass windows will provide an industrial look that is common in the Starkville area. Each of these windows offers a view of the surrounding campus. The exposed brick used throughout the space draws inspiration from the brick structures in the community. Each material plays a role in creating a space that is cohesive with the traditional design surrounding it.
