MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARK DUMEZ
I fondly recall the first time Chemainus Theatre staged Chickens in the fall of 1995 – a fast moving, quirky comedy that surprised me at each turn, all set against wonderful original music. Well, time flies even if chickens can’t (makes more sense after seeing the play), and it’s been 17 years since Chickens ruled the roost. It’s a pleasure to bring this rural, musical dust-up back as part of our milestone 20th season. The Theatre just staged its grand 20th season celebration on August 17th with a full day of open house festivities that included puppetry and prop building workshops, a lavish history tent displaying a sampling of costumes, props and set models, and lots of free ice cream. The day also showcased three performances: the theatre camp program staged its energetic wrap up show in the morning, Animal Tales took the boards in the afternoon and we capped the day off with a special performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat that featured an extended intermission to mix & mingle with the cast. If you made it out to any part of the day – thank you. All told over 800 participated in the day making it a wonderful time for us to say thank you to the community of Chemainus and to you – our loyal audience. Theatre can only survive and flourish if it draws in and engages the public. By being here today you are supporting live theatre and have become engaged in the Chemainus Theatre Festival. Chickens. Homebody, coop-dwelling, flightless birds. They like to work in the garden. Rarely considered adventurous, outgoing or risk-takers. But talk to any chicken keeper – the kind you find selling free-range eggs in roadside stands – and discover there is more than meets the eye. Each one has their own personality, character and set of expectations and requirements to be happy and healthy. Little mirrors for our own families and foibles – our own flocks, broods or peeps. Blake ennobled the tiger, Shakespeare the lion, the deer and the bear, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the canine, but in this cunning musical, Lucia Frangione takes on the chicken. The delight of the world she crafts is its down-home roots and barnyard parallels. Lucia knows a path to the heart is through a stomach full of laughs. As former artistic director of Chemainus Theatre Festival, it’s great to have Lucia’s work from 1995 back, by popular demand, as part of the 20th season programming and celebrations. It’s a pleasure to have so much Canadian and Island talent on stage and behind this process. We welcome back Sara-Jeanne Hosie, who has performed many times on the Chemainus Theatre Festival stage and has established herself as a director and choreographer in Vancouver and further afield – and brings with her a vibrancy and spirit welcome at the helm of this homespun classic. She’s assembled quite a team to sing, dance and cluck their way into our hearts. Have a great time.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES SARA-JEANNE HOSIE If men are meant to “be the strength and provide,” and women are meant to “nurture and support,” then why do women give birth to the child while the men support and encourage them? Fear is based in the idea that we will not succeed at the challenges we are “meant to do,” or be the person we are “supposed to be.”

In this piece, Pal and Liza believe in tradition, and so have an expectation of themselves because of these traditional thoughts. Finding themselves on a barren farm without money, harvest or children, Liza and Pal are asked to go beyond expectations; to look inside and discover that through great love and faith we can find balance and conquer fear. Are there chickens involved? Absolutely! Do they represent our hero and heroine’s fears, doubts, hopes and dreams? Absolutely! Who better to learn the lessons of fear from but from those who are, in fact, chickens?

Danny is excited to be back in Chemainus, but this time as music director. Some career highlights include the hit Queen musical We Will Rock You, the North American premiere cast of Mamma Mia!, Drake in HONK, Perchik in Fiddler On The Roof, Jerry Allison in The Buddy Holly Story etc. He was in the top 30 for the premiere of Canadian Idol, which led to his CD entitled “Dorsey Park” (itunes). Danny sends his love to his family and amazing wife Katie.
Samantha is delighted to be back in Chemainus after a lovely summer of singing as Marian Paroo in The Music Man with Theatre Under The Stars in Vancouver. Recent credits include: Amadeus and Snow White (Chemainus Theatre Festival), Munscha Mia! (Carousel Theatre) and WIRED (Green Thumb Theatre). She is currently choreographing Shawnigan Lake School’s upcoming production of Hairspray. She sends love to her family and Alex for all their support. Enjoy the show!

Born in England, David is a theatre stage manager, lighting designer, author and photographer. Stage management credits in BC include numerous productions for TheatreOne (Nanaimo), Graffiti Theatre (Salt Spring Island) and Chemainus Theatre Festival. David is pleased to return here for his 28th production, where he also stage managed Harvest and Noises Off this year. David’s photographs are held in Pari Museé national d’art moderné collection.
Drew is a four time Jessie Award winning designer and ten time nominee. Recently he designed the costumes for The Merry Wives of Windsor (Bard on the Beach), production designs for The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (Pound of Flesh), The Gooble Portrait (Seizième), Aesop’s Fables (Carousel) and the set for Calendar Girls (Arts Club). Briana is thrilled to be making her Chemainus debut! She was seen lately in Blood Brothers at The Arts Club Theatre. Other favorite roles include Rizzo in Grease (Citadel Theatre), Belle in Beauty and the Beast (Globe Theatre) and most recently as the title role in The Adulteress (Teatro La Quindicina) in which she received a Sterling award nomination. Briana has also performed with improv groups all over Canada. Endless love and thanks to José.
Lauchlin is a Vancouver-based designer holding a BFA in theatre design and production from UBC. Some favourite recent designs include Titanic and The Music Man at Theatre Under The Stars this past summer, Burning In and Mary’s Wedding (Gateway Theatre’s Studio B) as well as A Christmas Carol and My Name Is Asher Lev (Pacific Theatre). He has received six Jessie Award nominations.

Eugene received his diploma in Jazz Studies from Capilano University and has since been working in musical theatre. His last show in Chemainus was All Shook Up, and he is looking forward to more in the future. When he’s not playing in musicals, he likes to perform jazz or blues around the lower mainland.

Giovanni is pleased to be back in Chemainus. He has had a fantastic year. He recently played Father Flynn in Doubt (Pacific Theatre), Gilbert in Anne of Green Gables (Rosebud Theatre), Charlie in Mary’s Wedding (Gateway Theatre) and had the title role in the Canadian premiere of My Name Is Asher Lev (Pacific Theatre). Last time he was in Chemainus was for Amadeus. Selected credits: Fiddler on the Roof, Man of La Mancha, Confessions of a Paperboy.
This marks Daniel’s third show in a row for the Chemainus Theatre, and he can’t think of a better place to be! Daniel was last seen here as Judah in Joseph, and as Ensemble in All Shook Up. A huge thank-you goes to Mark, Sara-Jeanne, Danny, and the rest of the team for this opportunity. CRAIG SALKELD Piano Craig usually finds himself behind the scenes composing and arranging music in a wide variety of settings. He has composed music for The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, and Showtime. He recently co-wrote Cyberlife:The Musical for Mulgrave School in West Vancouver. When dropping names, Craig likes to mention that he has worked with Petula Clark, Wayne Newton, and Howie Mandel. He is excited to work on Chickens!
SHANE SNOW Pal Shane was most recently in Chemainus as the director and choreographer of Joseph. He also directed A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline starring Sara-Jeanne Hosie. Shane has worked as an actor, director and choreographer at the Arts Club, The Playhouse, Relephant, Patrick Street, Vertigo, Realwheels, Company C, Iron Mountain, Theatre Calgary, the Centaur, and Boca del Lupo. He is a graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria.
PAUL TEDESCHINI Sound Designer Recent sound design credits include Noises Off (Chemainus Theatre Festival/Western Canada Theatre), Fresco (Shadbolt Centre/The Cultch), Harvest (Chemainus Theatre Festival), Circle Mirror Transformation (Arts Club Theatre) and Amadeus (Chemainus Theatre Festival). plays tender-hearted, philosophical Pal Grandfield, and Samantha Currie as his determined and tenacious wife, Liza.
Artistic Director Mark DuMez has been around the theatre racket long enough to know that a true hit won’t stay “cooped up” for long. Creative and entertaining shows will always return to rule the roost. That’s exactly the case with our current homegrown musical, Chickens. “Chickens brings a distinct tongue-incheek (or tongue-in-beak) humour to our stage as it explores how we work through our challenges in quirky and humorous ways - sometimes even projecting our hopes and dreams onto our pets,” DuMez says. “It’s been a tumultuous few years for a lot of people, which makes this the perfect time to both have some fun and explore – barnyard style – how we come to terms with big life decisions.” The original production, staged in 1995, was so popular that it’s never been forgotten – partly due to entertainment value, and also due to the direct connection we share with the show’s playwright Lucia Frangione. Frangione worked with the Chemainus Theatre Festival from its founding in 1993 until 1999 as an actor, artistic director (1995), and writer of seven plays. Now based out of Vancouver, she has authored over twenty-five plays and received the Gordon
Armstrong (Holy Mo) and Sydney Risk (Cariboo Magi) playwriting awards - as well as continuing to direct and act. Aside from our delight to revive a legendary local show, we’re also pleased by the way Chickens compliments our current season. Its humour and lighthearted flavour compliment a deeper message to deliver a story that our audience members appreciate and enjoy. Making the themes work perfectly is credited to the fantastic vision of director and choreographer Sara-Jeanne Hosie. Hosie balances the familiar struggles in Pal and Liza’s relationship with the oddball romances of their chickens; her delivery is both entertaining and thought-provoking. “Chickens is a delightfully heart-warming piece that explores life issues we all have experienced...insecurity, longing, faith, hope and acceptance,” says Hosie. “Through music, humour, relationships, we take this touching journey, with a farmer and his wife...and their fowl friends to discover what really matters.” Providing both comic and dramatic relief is a talented cast of professionals. In the roles of our farmers are actors Shane Snow who

The cast features four more finefeathered characters. In the roles of the chickens are actors Daniel James White as the shy and dubious His Nibs, and Briana Buckmaster who plays his sweet and caring partner, Butter Ball – the former beauty queen. Luisa Jojic plays the straight-shooting, maverick hen, Stewer – opposite Giovanni Mocibob who has all the swagger of bigheaded, fearless Alphonso.

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy a downhome musical, and we hope that all our audience members will love this fast, goofy, song-and-dance story of survival and happiness. Featuring numerous comical characters, the play is a unique opportunity for local audiences to experience the remarkable talents of an iconic Canadian actor. In just over 25 years, Beattie has appeared in over
4,000 productions of the award-winning Wingfield series – delighting television, radio and theatre audiences across Canada with Wingfield’s many bizarre adventures.
