Mark DuMez It’s been a grand 20th season and pleasure to finish off the year with THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI. Once again, we are treated with some of Canada’s best talent – returning to us from Stratford, Shaw, Broadway and Vancouver Island – to call Chemainus home for a few months and share the holidays with us from our intimate stage. Crafting our 2013 season has been thrilling and complex. I’m really excited about 2013 and thank all the patrons, artists, staff and Board members whose input helps to shape the artistry we enjoy on stage! The season is a terrific blend of artistic challenges, exciting escapism and festivals that nourish our collective stories together. We rock in the year with the blockbuster musical, BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, featuring Zachary Stevenson, who has played the role across Canada and stars in our own exciting production. The show will start our engines and bring in friends from all over the Island! Crafting our 2013 Comic theatricality Season has been thrilling and complex is front and centre in DELICIOUS LIES, where circus energy meets the Wild West in this treatment of Molière’s dynamic SCAPIN! Two exciting new festivals will shoulder the summer season – this spring’s ISLAND STORIES FESTIVAL features GOOD TIMBER – Songs & Stories of the Western Logger and a FAMILY AND FAITH FESTIVAL in the fall will feature the breathtaking drama – A PRETTY GIRL (A SHAYNA MAIDEL). These festivals offer opportunities to serve the Island through telling our own stories and exploring resilience, integrity and love through the generations.

Throughout the year we will be conducting theatre workshops and camps for kids, working with local senior citizens through the Resilience Project, developing new plays and holding staged readings Exploring resilience, in our Playwright integrity and love Pairings. I am Through the generations extremely excited for all the opportunities to advance the arts, enhance the Island life and build community through 2013. Thanks for joining us today. I would like to invite you, if you still are deliberating, to become a subscriber in 2013. Subscribers, members and donors are the lifeblood of an arts organization. In a non-profit society like the Chemainus Theatre Festival, friends that champion the organization and enhance their theatre experience see their generosity multiply in strong artistry on stage and through the pride that comes from supporting an authentic and energetic Island treasure. We look forward to sharing our stories together in 2013!

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN anchors the season and brings back the thrill and nostalgia of Hollywood’s Golden Age. We are looking forward to the technical challenges and creative casting that will support the cinematic storytelling of this summer show. In the fall, we take a turn to the grandfather of all mysteries – a show with very little gore but plenty of intrigue and theatrical spectacle – DRACULA: A SOUL THIRSTS. And finally, we wrap up the year with one of the most popular and dearly loved holiday stories of all time – IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

Message from the Managing Director

Randal Huber Welcome theatre-goers! Settle in for a treat as we cap off our milestone 20th season with this heart-warming production of The Gifts of the Magi. Today’s show is sure to rekindle some of that old-fashioned Christmas spirit courtesy of Jim and Della.

Visit The Gallery during intermission

We recently announced the 2013 season and launched our season ticket campaign. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes (four, five and six show packages), season tickets make wonderful Christmas gifts. With price points suited to every budget, season tickets offer the best seats at the best prices and ensure that you catch all of the excitement. For all keen to take the Chemainus Theatre Experience to the next level, consider joining our Membership program and taking advantage of opportunities to meet company members, attend play readings and step behind the scenes of live theatre. Membership is at the heart of our fundraising activities and it has grown to number over 250 kindred spirits. There’s always room for you to join and it can all start with a charitable gift of $25. Finally, please help us spread the word by telling your friends about the show. If each person that’s purchased a ticket for The Gifts of the Magi gets one other person to attend, we would sell out every performance. Wow! That would mark the ultimate finale to our 20th season. Thank you for being here today and supporting live professional theatre on Vancouver Island. We couldn’t do this without you.

It is the most wonderful time of the year! For down-on-their-luck lovers, Jim and Della, the holiday looks bleak – Christmas Eve has arrived and with it the last chance to buy their one special gift. Both are out of work and penniless; eking out a frugal life in their modest New York apartment. Still, the husband and wife both secretly wish to show their love by giving the perfect gift. With no more than “one dollar and eighty-seven cents” between them, both Jim and Della must decide whether to part with their own most precious possession in order to acquire their holiday surprise. Della takes great pride in her long and flowing hair, while Jim treasures the shiny gold watch that has been passed through his family from father to son. When the couple finally exchange their thoughtful – yet useless – presents, they do indeed discover a surprise. A much greater gift awaits than any they expected. The Chemainus Theatre Festival artistic director, Mark DuMez, leads a talented team of Broadway veterans and Shaw

and Stratford alumni in creating the entertaining and delightful holiday classic, with an O. Henry twist. “When it comes to Christmas, we love to embrace hope and find an escape from things that are cold and commercial,” says DuMez. “The Gifts of the Magi, a musical about a beautiful married couple and O. Henry’s other story, The Cop and the Anthem, offers a loving and lighthearted reminder that beyond money, presents, and frenzy of the season, it’s the impulse to give and connect with each other that holds us together and really counts.” An award-winning cast brings animation and emotion to the show. With many international acting, dancing, and singing credits, extending to Broadway and beyond, the actors may easily be considered a gift to the production itself. In lead roles, Jesse Martyn (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, In Flanders Fields, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Anne and Gilbert, Saint Joan) appears as husband Jim Dillingham; opposite Kaylee Harwood (Jesus Christ Superstar, Camelot, Sweeney Todd, My

Fair Lady, Les Misérables) in the role of wife, Della Dillingham. Vancouver native Jeff Hyslop (Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Producers, A Chorus Line, Phantom of the Opera) plays cheerful bum, Soapy, who is on a mission to get arrested and spend the holiday in a cozy cell; while Colin Sheen (All Shook Up, Next to Normal, Glory Days, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat) adds delightful and informative observations to the story as newsboynarrator Willy. Rounding out the troupe are Robert Clarke (Guys and Dolls, The 39 Steps, Falsettos, The Woods) and Sarah Carlé (Seussical The Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Steel Magnolias, Sweeney Todd) as spirited city folk going about their holiday business. Punctuating the story are bursts of original music and lyrics by Randy Courts and Mark St. Germain. Eleven lilting pieces are unified into merry song and dance numbers by the

musical direction of Brad L’Écuyer and choreography of Ken Overbey. The charming musical is given its proper due by the talented production team. Scenery designer Kevin McAllister, lighting designer Conor Moore and sound designer Paul Tedeschini transform the stage into a beautiful heritage portrait of early 20th century New York – accentuated by the artful use of period fashion by costume designer Norma Bowen. While audiences are visually captivated, stage manager Leigh McClymont ensures everything comes together with great perfection. For theatre-goers who are looking to kindle their holiday spirit, The Gifts of the Magi provides humour, heart and the gift everyone wants… to unwrap the true meaning of Christmas. Share a heartwarming Christmas moment with your friends and family!
