MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARK DUMEZ An old friend, in reacquainting himself to my family, asked not what my wife did but rather “what occupies your days?” This always stuck with me. He was affirming that every moment matters. How we build our days, what we “spend” our time on, is, in essence, our life. The moments of George’s story twist and turn. Even George’s darkest hour is the product of a life well-spent. Spent in the service of others, spent embracing GEORGE IS PUT INTO family, spent giving most people the AN IMPOSSIBLE benefit of the doubt. But he is spent. SITUATION Out of this fine moral compass, George is put into an impossible situation – contemplating cashing in his life insurance policy. But that’s not the end of the story. Cash is important, but not the measure of this man. He is saved in this story by what occupies his days – community, good-will, a high regard for his neighbour and the love of his family. Life has occupied his days and will fill them going forward from his crisis. I hope you enjoy this show, with its powerhouse cast, great performances and life affirming spirit!

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Peter Jorgensen It's a Wonderful Life. The brilliance of the title is that it refers to both the universal life that we all share as well as the very specific life of its main character, George Bailey. Frank Capra, who created the film, must have understood that the more specifically a story is told the more universally it will resonate. So he set out to create a very detailed, WE UNDERSTAND HIS very thorough account of the major STRUGGLE IN LIFE moments in George's life. The payoff in the end is that, like Clarence the Angel, we have gotten to know George Bailey quite well. We are able to view his world through his eyes. We understand his struggle in life, we are devastated when we see the hole left by his absence, and we are humbled and overjoyed when his life is restored. To make plain the story of George's life the film employs a beautiful screenplay that uses not only dialogue but very detailed imagery. Through Capra's lens we see swirling ice in a river below, a stirring montage of the war effort, or a longing close up of her looking at him looking at her... In the theatre this cinematic touch can never be realized. So in adapting the screenplay for the I plundered the great American songbook from 1920-1950 MUSIC ALLOWS US stage for songs that would assist us in reaching for the universal themes TO TELL A STORY of love, hope, and community. Music allows us to tell a story EXPRESSIVELY expressively rather than through the descriptive medium of film. And so through music rather than imagery, the hope is that this adaptation allows you to enjoy the same emotional journey as the film, but in our own theatrically unique way. At the end of this play, if we have succeeded, then you will go away with a fresh reminder that a life truly is wonderful. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
PETER JORGENSEN Director & Choreographer Peter couldn't be happier to be back with the Chemainus Theatre Festival. Past directing credits here include Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, and Fiddler on the Roof. As an Artistic Producer with Patrick Street Productions he has directed and choreographed Into the Woods, The Full Monty, Bat Boy: the Musical, and The Light in the Piazza (Jessie and Ovation awards for Outstanding Production) and he recently made his directing debut at the Arts Club Theatre with the smash musical Avenue Q. Although performing less these days Peter has appeared in many musicals around BC. Favourites include My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street, and She Loves Me. As a writer Peter adapted/translated the light opera Orpheus Aux Enfers, conceived and created the musical revue Rodgers and Hammerstein: Out of a Dream (premiering in February in Vancouver) and wrote To Broadway and Back a one man cabaret for which he received a Jessie Nomination for original script. When he's not directing, producing, writing or appearing in musicals he can usually be found teaching it. DAVID BAUGHAN Stage Manager Born in England, David is a theatre stage manager, lighting designer, author and photographer. Stage management credits in BC include numerous productions for TheatreOne (Nanaimo), Graffiti Theatre (Salt Spring Island) and Chemainus Theatre Festival. David is pleased to return to Chemainus where he has already stage managed over 30 productions. Many of David’s photographs are held in the Musée national d’art moderne collection in Paris.
JESSICA BAYNTUN Costume Designer Jessica Bayntun obtained her bachelors in fashion design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University kick starting her passion for colour, texture and movement. She is currently teaching drafting and sewing at Kwantlen, designing for theatre, and constructing one of a kind garments for Messica Demolition including custom corsetry, lingerie, and swimwear. Theatre including: BatBoy, The Wild Party, The Light in the Piazza (2012 Jessie Nominated), Avenue Q.
STEPHANIE B. Young Mary/Zuzu Stephanie started off her love of the stage at the age of 5 when she began dance classes. She spent the summer of 2012 in the children’s choir in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat and is happy to be back on stage at the Chemainus Theatre.
DAMON CALDERWOOD Marty/Bert Damon is delighted to be returning to the Chemainus Theatre Festival after roles here in The Wizard of Oz and Fiddler on the Roof. Most recently, Damon played Rex in Fugue Theatre’s Secret Service, Sherlock in Holmes and Watson Save the Empire! (First Impressions Theatre); Billy Bishop in Billy Bishop Goes to War (Ace Prod.) and Caleb in The Spitfire Grill (Pacific Theatre). Upcoming: Freud’s Last Session (City Stage NW). TIM DIXON Peter Bailey/Henry Potter Tim is pleased to be back on the Chemainus Theatre stage after a 20-year absence; he played Matt in Talley’s Folly in the inaugural season. Since then, Tim has done theatre (including Pacific Theatre in Vancouver), television (The X-Files, Highlander) and film (Lake Placid). He recently appeared in Our Town as Simon Stimson, at Rosebud Theatre in Alberta. Tim married his college sweetheart this year, and now lives with her in Nanaimo.
CAMERON DUNSTER Ernie This show marks Cameron’s Chemainus debut. Recent credits include: Nachum in Fiddler on the Roof (Gateway); Charles Guiteau in Assassins (Pipedream); and Parker in the 2012 Pick of the Vancouver Fringe: Riverview High, as well as Singin’ in the Rain and Music Man (TUTS); Victor/Victoria (Metro) and Annie (Gateway). MARK EUGSTER Lighting Designer Mark is a graduate of the University of Victoria’s BFA theatre program. Always on the move, he is fascinated by the art of production and is continually working on new projects to develop a diverse perspective of the possibilities of live entertainment. Other recent lighting designs include POV and the Belfry’s Little Sweep, MMHop’s Speaking in Ligeti, a season of festival concerts at SFU Woodward’s GCA, and Itsazoo’s Mojo.
BECKY HACHEY Violet This is Becky’s first time working in Chemainus and she is very excited to be working with this great group of people. She hopes that you enjoy this new telling of It’s a Wonderful Life and that your holiday season is filled with joy and laughter. LORNE H. Young George Lorne is 12 years old and attends Ecole Mt. Prevost. Lorne played the male lead in his school play At the Hop last year and attended a French Immersion summer Drama Camp this past summer. Last summer Lorne attended the Chemainus Theatre’s summer Drama Camp and was an Oompa Loompa in the Cowichan Secondary’s school production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Lorne is an avid soccer player for the U13 Cowichan Valley Gold Team and enjoys skateboarding.
JEFF HYSLOP Uncle Billy A true “triple-threat”, Jeff has starred in Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Women, and A Chorus Line in London and on Broadway. To many, he is the Phantom of the Opera, from 1000 performances of the Lloyd-Webber musical. Jeff is thrilled to have directed and choreographed this year’s debut presentation of Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen in North Vancouver. Between work and the love of his daughter Gemma and granddaughter Remmi, Jeff’s truly is A Wonderful Life.

DAVID MARR Clarence David is very pleased to be making his first appearance with Chemainus Theatre. A mainly Vancouver based actor, he has performed with The Vancouver Playhouse and The Arts Club and other theatres for thirty years. His most recent roles were Pompey in Measure for Measure and William Shakespeare in Elizabeth Rex for Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival where he has been a company member for the last eighteen seasons.
MARSHALL MCMAHEN Set Designer Marshall is glad to return to Chemainus after designing set and lighting for Joseph, and sets for several KidzPlays. Other recent set designs in Vancouver and around BC include Avenue Q (Arts Club); All the Way Home (Electric Company); The King and I (Gateway) and three productions with Caravan Farm Theatre. BARBARA POLLARD Mrs. Bailey Barbara is one of the creators of the Moms the Word trilogy - plays she wrote and performed across Canada also in London, Scotland, and Australia. This summer she was the Queen of Denmark in Hamlet and in 12th Night at Bard on the Beach. Recent credits include Fiddler on the Roof (Gateway); The Music Man (TUTS); Spitfire Grill (Pacific Theatre); True West and Lie of the Mind (Main Street Theatre) and she just played a lead in the indie film Far From Home.
NICO RHODES Musical Director/Piano/Woodwinds A studio musician, orchestrator, composer and musical director; Nico has performed across Canada, the western United States, Central America and Eastern Africa. Credits as musical director include: A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline (CTF/Arts Club); All Shook Up (CTF/Gateway Theater); A Countryside Christmas (CTF). GORDON ROBERTS Joseph With his baritone character voice Gordon has become a mainstay of Vancouver musical theatre. FINNLAY S. Young George Finnlay has acted in many plays since he was seven years old and is very excited to be making his Chemainus debut. Finnlay enjoys a variety of activities when he is not on stage, including basketball, skiing and playing the piano. HANNAH JANE Z. Young Mary/Zuzu Hannah made her 1st TV appearance at 6 years old in a Fisher Price commercial. At 8 years old she attends Spotlight Academy where she was described as “the most advanced 7 year old actor ever” within weeks. A voice student of Anna Lyman, she enjoys playing the piano and is learning ukulele. Awarded every school year for the virtues of confidence, creativity, enthusiasm, determination and joy, she can’t wait to show you why in her debut theatre performance.
