Message from the President of the society Board of Directors

Message from the artistic director Mark DuMez

Pat Moore

Since time and memorial, we have been fascinated with what happens in the great beyond. Where we go, what we do there, and if such a place exists has been symbolized in tribal rituals described through we see the future epic theologies and treatises, through the eyes and mulled over late-night talk of faith shows – to name just a few. And no matter which way we look at what comes after we die, we see the future through the eyes of faith while we walk this mortal coil.

On behalf of our volunteer Chemainus Theatre Board, and our volunteer corps of 160 members who make it possible for us to open our doors each night, welcome to the Chemainus Theatre production of Dracula. The 1924 stage play by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston brought Bram Stoker’s 1897 multi-themed gothic horror novel to theatre audiences. Through the power of live theatre, this story with its intriguing elements was extended through numerous artistic incarnations up to the recent Twilight series.

In this version of prognostication, Bram Stoker’s Dracula drifts between worlds – a fallen angel of sorts. Through this stage adaptation, we are confronted with the mythic and symbolic battle of good versus symbolic battle of evil – the power of seduction good versus evil and deception clashing with the antidotes of transcendence and divinity. In a mystery scribed with the tools of archetypes and symbols, we are asked to examine our own assumptions of spiritual power, destiny and belief, and assess if we are sure of what we hope for and if we are certain of what we do not see.

The power of live theatre also helped to transform the vision of our Founding Directors in the early nineties of a theatre in Chemainus, to one of the largest in Western Canada. But each show also required the talent and dedication of our production, management and development teams, and our volunteers. The Chemainus Theatre is funded almost entirely by our patrons – something that would not be possible without the continued generosity of our hundreds of annual donors. Seasons tickets are take in the full now available for the 2014 chemainus theatre season. Please renew, or join experience us as a subscriber for the first time. Take in the full Chemainus Theatre experience at the Playbill Dining Room and the Gallery Gift Shop, as well as local Chemainus attractions. Thank you for your continued support for live theatre on Vancouver Island – enjoy the show!

Bernard Cuffling

Ian Butcher is a Vancouver actor and has been performing in film, television and theatre across Canada and Europe, and is thrilled to be back on stage at Chemainus. For Chemainus Festival: Saint Joan, South Pacific, and five seasons at Bard on the Beach. Film/TV selected: Arrow, Almost Human, Robocop, Arctic Air, Fringe, Once Upon a Time.

Dracula is as fascinating now as it was when first a novel by Bram Stoker. It is a strong part of theatre history having been performed regularly for well over 100 years. So I delighted when Mark DuMez asked strong part was me to direct the play for Chemainus of theatre Theatre Festival. I enjoyed working on history The Woman in Black here a few seasons ago, and so decided to give this Dracula that same gothic ambience. With a wonderful team of designers and an equally talented cast I hope we have achieved just that.

Ted Cole Abraham Van Helsing Chemainus fans may remember Ted Cole from his performance as Emperor Joseph in Amadeus. Recent theatre credits include: The Constant Wife (Arts Club); Copenhagen (The Globe); Jitters (Belfrey); A History of Breathing (Persephone); Don Juan (Blackbird). Ted’s television career has spanned shows like: MacGyver, X-files, Stargate, Supernatural, and recently, Fringe and Bates Motel. Mr. Cole is a voice actor in hundreds of animated episodes and has been a comic improviser with the Vancouver TheatreSports League in over 3000 performances.

Do we believe in vampires? Are there such creatures in existence? Who knows? I leave it up to Do we believe you to decide. But if nothing else I hope in vampires? this production entertains and thrills you and leaves you with a few hours of theatrical enjoyment. P.S. An interesting theatre fact: Bram Stoker was the stage manager for Sir Henry Irving - the first actor to receive a knighthood.
