MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR RANDAL HUBER

Looking for 55 supporting role players… June 4th, 1993 the Playbill Dining Room swung open its doors as the opening act of the Chemainus Theatre Experience. Founded solely to support the creation of theatre, the Playbill has served this purpose admirably and all proceeds from food service have been used to create and sustain the plays staged here at the Chemainus Theatre. Twenty one seasons and 650,000 diners later, the venerable Playbill was looking dated and fatigued and we decided that it was time for a refresh. We carefully reviewed the feedback that we’ve received and assembled a team to set about re-creating the Playbill Dining Room. As we launch our 2014 season, we’re pleased to report that the work is done and the result is elegant & dramatic. The Playbill has embarked on a second act of its own. If you have yet to see it, please go have a look through the windows at intermission and then join us for dinner on your next visit.

“a casting call of a different sort”

Back to those supporting roles that need filling. This is a casting call of a different sort. We’re searching for 55 sponsors – one for each table in the dining room. It’s $400 to sponsor a table for four and $250 for a deuce. In return for this kind act of generosity, we offer a charitable tax receipt along with heartfelt recognition on one of the table signs. Getting involved is easy. You can stop by the box office for more details. We thank the team from RW Bob Wall Construction and Patti Ransom Design for transforming our dining room – putting it in good stead to serve you for many seasons to come.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARK DUMEZ

The kick-off to a season of theatre is always a time to celebrate, and for the Chemainus Theatre Festival – which produces theatre 11 months a year, with over 330 performances – it’s a particularly good time. I’m very pleased to start the year off by bringing back The Buddy Holly Story with such a fine group of actors, multi-talented musicians and artists. In theatre we often design a show, build it, rehearse it, perform it and then MARK DUMEZ“strike it” to live in memory. It’s always nice when a show can be remounted in other parts of the province or, in this case, when it comes back to roost on our boards. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

2014 has shaped up to be an exciting and diverse season of theatre, from this modern musical to British and Italian family comedies to stirring intellectual challenges – you can read all about it in the season brochure. I’d like to thank the dedicated season ticket subscribers, members, donors, sponsors and patrons who partner with this theatre in such lively, creative and thoughtful ways. Through these vital partnerships and by purchasing a ticket for the show before you, you are supporting live professional theatre on Vancouver Island, the life and work of artists and creators, youth and family outreach programs and the Kidzplay Series – and building a strong and vibrant community along the coast of the Salish Sea. We are all part of something special here at the Chemainus Theatre Festival – something as uniquely crafted as the wind and wave carved rocks along our coast. Thank you – and enjoy the show.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES SARA-JEANNE HOSIE

Charles Hardin Holley, known to us as Buddy Holly, did what so many artists long to do. He made an everlasting mark in this world through his extraordinary talent. Determined, passionate, beautifully awkward, and honest, Buddy Holly, in an all-too brief career, changed the face of popular music. As a singer/songwriter myself, and someone familiar with iconic life storytelling (Patsy Cline), I am truly honored and humbled to help bring Buddy’s story to life. I have been gifted with a team of talented artists, musicians, designers, and technical wizards; led beautifully by the seasoned and charismatic Zachary Stevenson. I hope this date to the theatre will gift many of you with a trip down memory lane, and perhaps some, with a new found passion for this remarkable artist. Whether you write music, play music, or listen to music, Buddy’s story challenges us all to live fully, speak boldly, dream big and to cherish every note… every moment. And hey, if that pair of eccentric glasses you bought make you happy… wear’em! “One of the main things about the Beatles is that we started out writing our own material. People these days take it for granted that you do, but nobody used to then. John and I started to write because of Buddy Holly. It was like, ‘Wow! he writes and is a musician.... in our imaginations back then, John was Buddy and I was Little Richard or Elvis.” —Paul McCartney of the Beatles, The Beatles Anthology, 2000

The Crickets, were – pure performers; no tricks, no air guitar.

You’re about to witness the birth of rock n’ roll.

It was all about the music for Holly, and The Festival’s artistic team has done him proud. Countless hours have been spent dancing across the stage (and up the aisles) as we prepared over 20 of Holly’s greatest hits. If practice makes perfect, we’re sure you’ll find every note from Holly’s first hit single, That’ll Be The Day, to his final performance with the Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace) and Ritchie Valens (La Bamba) to be pure entertainment.

While we enjoy the happy moments of Holly’s story, the times of strife and tragedy are just as important to understanding his incredible achievements. Just as the world was getting used to his new kind of music, a 1959 plane crash took the 22 year-old’s life (along with We’re thrilled to bring back Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story, a jukebox musical that fellow musicians The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens). The loss was mourned celebrates the short-lived career of an historic rock ‘n’ roll legend – and celebrate far and wide, and has become a global legend. Since opening in London’s West we have! The entire Festival team has End in 1989, Buddy, written by Alan Janes, been inspired by Holly’s unique gangly has become the “world’s most successful style, novel use of music phrasing and glottal stops (which became a hallmark of rock ‘n’ roll musical”. Over 22 million music fans have seen the show – from the UK to his “devil’s music”), and his dramatic life tale. Despite the decades since his untimely Broadway, and throughout the Americas, South Africa, Norway, Japan, Israel, death, we continue to find his sound Iceland, and beyond. impossible to resist. Mastering the fast-moving scenes of Reviving Buddy was no small endeavour. songs and narrative is director and The show moves swiftly from moments choreographer, Sara-Jeanne Hosie, whom of nerdy charm to hothead hyperactivity, audiences may recognize from recent The stubborn smarts to artistic genius, and times of emotional turmoil. As we explored Chemainus Theatre Festival productions Chickens (2012) and A Closer Walk with deeper into his dream of “playing his Patsy Cline (2011). Her musical theatre music his way”, we realized just how experience, both on and off stage, have impressively talented Holly, and his band struck the perfect balance between At the Chemainus Theatre Festival, we’ve been reliving the days when the music of Bill Haley and The Comets, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis filled the airwaves. While the 1950’s saw the rise of many famous performers, the most inspiring tale is of one man who dominated the charts and revolutionized the country music scene – all in a mere 18 months.

rollicking concert fun and emotionallycharged dramatics. The essence of the famous performer is alive and well under Hosie’s leadership. Also alive and well is veteran Buddy star, Zachary Stevenson. Assuming the title role, he shows passion for (and uncanny reflection of) the iconic songwriter and composer. Stevenson ignites hit after hit, and inspires a top-notch ensemble of highly-energetic triple-threats. Holly had a short career, but left a big story to tell, and our cast flawlessly assumes multiple roles to meet the challenge. Our thanks to: Kraig Waye (Joe B.
