Welcome to the world’s preeminent whodunit – Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap and I can’t think of a better way to follow up the runaway success of Ring of Fire. Now in its 63rd year in London’s West End, The Mousetrap is the world’s longest consecutively running play for very good reason… as you’re about to discover. One warning is that this run in Chemainus won’t be nearly as long so please tell your friends to book in soon because the show must close May 30 as we prepare for the British invasion.

Volunteer appreciation week is in April and that’s one of my favorite quotes about the value of volunteers. Volunteers have truly kept the good ship Chemainus Theatre afloat through our first 23 years. There’s no doubt in my mind that we wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the selfless contribution of volunteers.

This past year alone 154 people volunteered a total of 6,127 hours. Checking coats, showing us to our seats, building costumes, pulling weeds, helping in the office, serving on the board of directors… no task is too great or too small.

Volunteerism is one of the things that makes Canada the greatest place to live on Earth. Each year 12.7 million Canadians give 2 billion hours of time. Next chance you have be it here or elsewhere, say thank you to the volunteers who are giving their time to make your life better.

“

I’ve been thinking about murder mysteries, these curious things that many of us find intriguing and, at times, a kind of obsession. Who did it? How? Why? The questions reveal in us a want to explore the unknown and the safe thrill of exploring an abominable act from a distance. If you trace the origin of the word mystery, you will find it linked to mystical secrets and truth. In the same way, the word murder weaves a trail through Norse and Old English and can be associated with MARK DUMEZ mortal sins. This little game that we play with Agatha Christie and many other great writers of this genre is a way to explore our own mortality and sense of trust. It’s also great fun!

Everyone has a secret. We can never reveal all of ourselves in any given moment and, despite strategic plans and long-term goals, we rarely see ahead with 100% accuracy. It’s why hindsight is always 20/20. We might run from, or embrace, mystery. In this play it may be buried under layers of deceit, hidden in cracked dialects and details or out in the open for anyone to discover. In the large house with strange company, no one can be trusted – but everyone must be relied on to reveal the killer. I hope you enjoy the game – first performed in 1952 and still going strong. By most would not expect a 60-year-old detective story to become the world’s longest-running play. However, its unexpected longevity proves that rich drama, dark humour, and well-woven intrigue never fail to capture imagination.

christie is best known for relating the mysteries of the human condition. Her books have sold over 2 billion copies in 44 languages, and she has been cited in the guinness Book of World records as “Bestselling author”. The Mousetrap is an excellent reflection of her meticulous talent for storytelling. The short story was written for the royal family, and is based on a 30-minute radio piece called Three Blind Mice (that itself is based on tragic real-life events). To date, the original manuscript remains unpublished in the United Kingdom (although it has been VA N C O U V E R

Agatha Christie released in the United states), and at the author’s request it will remain a secret as long as the play runs in the West end of London. springing from the page to the theatre, The Mousetrap works wonderfully as a live production – more so than originally expected (even christie predicted no more than an eight-month run following its 1952 debut). Today, it is clear that the curious drawing-room comedy has staying power.

The key to its success is in the clever layering of double-barrelled drama, historic setting, and straight delivery.

The characters transfer this feeling of unease to the guesthouse, where a surprise blizzard entraps the guests, a murderer roams loose, and no one is quite what they seem. The humour in the play provides more suspicion than comic relief. coming together as secret backstories are revealed, twisting into ageless themes and a classic murder mystery.

The longevity of The Mousetrap can also be credited to its performance history. since its debut, more than 400 actors have appeared in the play, including late British actor, director, and producer richard attenborough (as the original Detective sergeant Trotter), and his wife, sheila sim (as the first mollie ralston, owner of monkswell manor guesthouse). now, over

six decades later, multiple generations of families have seen a performance – as if passing along a legacy of their own.

The theatrical significance of the play is further established in the UK as part of the London experience, as well as by its many parodies, and a children’s theatrical education charity that it has inspired.

We haven’t seen a murder-mystery on our stage since 2008 and we’re excited to look at the mystery of our mortality through christie’s eyes. We’re glad we get a chance to produce this professional show with a fantastic cast in chemainus.

Patti Allan Mrs. Boyle Patti is thrilled to return to the Chemainus Theatre to be part of The Mousetrap with Mark and this fabulous cast and crew!

Patti played Margaret in Waiting for the Parade last spring.

She was enchanted by the beauty of Chemainus and the wonderful folk here! She is so delighted to be back! Patti is a 4 time Jessie Richardson award recipient and has performed in numerous theatre, film and TV productions across the country.

David Baughan Stage Manager Born in England, David is a theatre stage manager, lighting designer, author and photographer. Stage management credits in BC include numerous productions for TheatreOne (Nanaimo), Graffiti Theatre (Salt Spring Island) and Chemainus Theatre.

David is pleased to return to Chemainus where he has already stage managed over 30 productions. Many of David’s photographs are held in the Musée National d’Art Moderne collection in Paris.

Jessica Bayntun Costume Designer Jessica obtained her Bachelor’s in Fashion Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, kick-starting her passion for colour, texture, and movement. She is currently teaching at Kwantlen, designing and producing stage costumes and custom clothing for Messica Demolition. Some of her recent projects include: custom corsetry, lingerie and swimwear for stage performers.

Recent costume design for theatre: Avenue Q, It’s a Wonderful Life, Out of a Dream and Les Misérables.

JAY CLIFT Detective Sergeant Trotter Jay is a Vancouver based actor and designer who has worked in theatre and on film and television. A graduate of Studio 58, Jay has since worked with some of B.C.’s best theatre companies including Rumble, Solo Collective and Electric Company Theatre. Jay is a two-time Jessie nominated actor and the winner of the 2014 Sam Payne Award. See Jay in the upcoming feature film The Bleeding Edge in theatres this year.

CHRIS COPE Christopher Wren Chris is thrilled to be in his first show at Chemainus Theatre Festival. A graduate of Studio 58, some recent credits include Our Town (osimous theatre), El Centro (Vancouver Fringe Festival), The Boys In The Band (Ghost Light Projects). Some previous film credits include Behind The Hit: Saved By The Bell, China On The Western Front. Chris thanks Chemainus for giving him this wonderful opportunity.

BERNARD CUFFLING Major Metcalf Bernard is no stranger to the Chemainus Theatre Festival. Last season he appeared as “Jeeves” and will be reprising that role again this season in Jeeves Intervenes. Other credits for the company as an actor or director have been: Dracula, Hay Fever, Woman in Black, Amadeus. Bernard is a recipient of a Sam Payne Award from the Actors/TV Union, the BC Walk of Fame and a Jessie Richardson Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre.

CLAIRE FRIEDRICH Apprentice Stage Manager Claire recently completed her BFA in Theatre from the University of Victoria. This is Claire’s second show with CTF, having also apprenticed on Waiting for the Parade last season. Selected credits include apprentice on Lucia Di Lammermoor, Tosca and Noye’s Fludde (Pacific Opera Victoria), stage manager on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Skin of Our Teeth (UVIC Phoenix Theatre) and Belfry 101LIVE, the culmination of SPARKFEST (Belfry Theatre).

MATTHEW HENDRICKSON Mr. Paravicini Matthew started his theatre career with the Young Company of Theatre New Brunswick in Fredericton, then trained at the University of Alberta. He has been living in London (England) for the last 27 years. His roles have been many and varied, including the original West End cast of The Reduced Shakespeare Company, which went on to run for nine years.

Matthew is very happy to be returning to Chemainus for this classic play.

RUBY JOY Miss Casewell Chemainus Theatre Festival debut! Laurin Kelsey Set Designer Laurin Kelsey obtained her BFA in Set and Costume Design from the University of Victoria and also attended the National Theatre School of Canada. Laurin is happy to return to the island after living and working in Germany for three years, where she designed for both theatre and film.
