This year, Chemainus Theatre Festival celebrates a wide range of musicals, comedies, and dramas which examine themes of identity, calling and compassion. In concert with the supporting work of food, festivity and artistic enrichment, the Chemainus Theatre Festival Experience continues to feed the heart and soul of Vancouver Island. The season opens with a chamber company of actor musicians in The Sound of Music, celebrating staying authentic while finding love and a true calling in the caring community of family. Then, romp through a classic comedy of confusion that unmasks stereotypes with The Foreigner. In the summer, travel to the Mediterranean to play in song and sea-foam with Mamma Mia! as an energetic “extended” family reunites. During the summer, KidzPlay brings back the team who staged the wildly popular The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, with a new adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew. In the Fall, Mrs. Warren’s Profession will dig deep to debate and debunk social moorings and question how far sacrificial love should go. The cheeky, charming musical comedy, Lumberjacks in Love, will skip and shuffle across the haywire stage for a short run of

folksy fun. The season closes with a Canadian adaptation of the holiday classic that questions the value of the faith of a child with the play Miracle on 34th Street! The live, professional Chemainus Theatre Festival Experience is always enhanced by the imaginative and inviting Playbill Dining Room, Fireside Lounge and enticing Gallery Gift Shop. In addition to all this on-stage work, outreach and engagement opportunities strengthen and deepen the arts. We continue to provide Island Savings Discover Theatre Workshops across Vancouver Island, create growth opportunities for young artists through week-long Theatre Intensives and support emerging artists, technicians and administrators through work studies and apprenticeships. Chemainus Theatre Festival continues to thrive on jubilant, thrilling, and engaging experiences. We look forward to seeing you! Mark DuMez Artistic Director

Based on the story of the von Trapp family singers, this thrilling and inspirational family musical follows the romantic story of Captain von Trapp and governess Maria as they fall in love and bring a family together, during the turbulent and frightening time preceeding World War II. When Nazis demand the immediate enlistment of the Captain, this couple’s love and courage helps them narrowly escape over the Austrian mountains with their seven children. Their story comes to life onstage with beloved songs “My Favourite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and of course “The Sound of Music.”

The loveliest musical imaginable ... vibrant and amusing ... a plot that rises to genuine excitement. New York Telegram and Sun

A painfully shy Englishman named Charlie takes a room at Betty Meeks’ Fishing Lodge and pretends he can’t speak a word of English to avoid his pathological fear of social interactions. This new role as “foreigner” makes him the unwitting confidante for the other residents and visitors when Charlie overhears more than he is meant to – with hilarious results! Charlie finds himself in predicaments that are sidesplittingly funny, but which also give us food for thought, as they remind us that our all-too-human foibles, follies, and frailties can make us endearing as well as initiate inspiring personal transformations.

Mrs. Warren manages a flourishing business, funding her daughter Vivie’s education in the finest boarding schools and universities, while keeping her profession as a Madam a secret. When Vivie, a “modern woman,” comes home to acquaint herself with her mother for the first time in her life, she challenges her mother in a two-woman battle of ideals between upper-class expectations and lower-class realities. In what is one of George Bernard Shaw’s most controversial plays, Mrs. Warren must attempt to reconcile with her disapproving daughter in a story sprinkled generously with sharp comedy and biting social commentary that remains relevant today.

‘Mrs. Warren’s Profession’ still has power to provoke. The Seattle Times

Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss 200 miles from the nearest woman – until one of them accidentally orders himself a mail-order bride! She interrupts their simple shanty life and turns it upside down. This slap-happy tale brings big belly laughs and pure silliness as we watch to see if romance will bloom where bath time might be once a month and the only thing that brings these big, burly boys running is the sound of the dinner bell!

This uproariously clever and funny musical ... resonates with tender humanity and humor. Peggy Sue Dunnigan BroadwayWorld.com

This is the Christmas story that we all want to believe in! Kris Kringle, a retired old man, is hired as Macy’s Santa in New York, and begins to spread Christmas cheer by directing parents to other stores, where they can find the exact special gift on their child’s Christmas list. As he threatens their commercialization of Christmas, those in charge try to have Kris committed. The stakes are raised with a court competency hearing, and the risk of one little girl’s belief in Santa. When the court confirms Kris the true Santa, both children and adults alike experience the delight of childhood fantasy.

This is what we want Christmas to be all about, really. Santa Cruz Sentinel

IN THE STUDIO THEATRE* Great talkers and wary strangers, Anthony and Caroline come together over a class project, but learn far more than what is in the lesson plan. She battles a disorder that requires a liver transplant and has created an emotional fortress in her bedroom. He arrives to work on a class project and kindles in her a love for Walt Whitman’s poetry. This forges a connection for Caroline – back to life and the rest of the world. With buoyant spirit, I and You breaks down the barriers to intimacy in the post-digital age and reminds us of the transcendent connections between us all.

Unforgettable. The end will leave you gasping.
