message from THe Chairman of Chemainus Festival society PAT MOORE
On behalf of our volunteer Chemainus Theatre Board, our production, management and development teams, and our team of over 150 volunteers who bring each Chemainus production to life, welcome to our production of Grace and Glorie. Tonight, while we are being entertained by the rich and humorous repartee in the southern cabin, we will also be reflecting on life’s crossroads and transitions. In its 23rd season the Chemainus Theatre is experiencing record attendance with performances that are at the forefront of live theatre in Canada. The crossroads and transitions that led the Chemainus Theatre to become an attendance leader in Western Canada, began with a vision and faith, supported by extraordinary generosity. In each ensuing year continued generosity has led the Theatre toward this vision of artistic excellence in a small town setting. We thank all of you for your support as patrons, volunteers and donors. Here are some tax advantaged ways to donate toward the Chemainus Theatre vision: • • •
The Endowment Fund (federal matching up to 100%) Tax enhanced donation of shares or property A legacy donation – join supporters who have included a donation in their will.
More information is at: http://chemainustheatrefestival.ca/support-us/donations/ Thank you and enjoy the show.

message from THe ARTISTIC Director MARK DUMEZ
For a number of years we’ve dedicated at least one show to programming that specifically explores elements of faith and family from a number of story perspectives. We laughed with the Italian grandparents in Over the River and Through the Woods, mined the minds of Lewis and Freud in Freud’s Last Session, explored the music of the holy from the profane in Amadeus, and watched a broken family heal through A Pretty Girl (A Shayna Maidel). In a theatre dedicated to nourishing and MARK DUMEZ exploring the human spirit, stories delving into what comes next are a necessary part of this cycle. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
There are no tidy parameters to life and death. It’s why playwrights, scientists, poets, explorers, and philosophers have been probing the boundaries endlessly. Every step we take is a dance to the living and one more length to death’s door – all wonderfully and woefully human. What drew me to program Grace and Glorie was its Southern setting, raw humour, colourful characters, and rich texture. These strong women are unflinching and embracing. In this little cabin, we witness two ordinary and yet remarkable lives – lives that echo our own. In doing so, we consider those who have faced their mortality and ask if crossing to the other side is the end to life or a transition to another kind of living. I’m banking on the latter. “It’s not that I’m afraid to die, I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” – Woody Allen Life is eternal; and love is immortal; And death is only a horizon; And the horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight. Deep in the mountains of Virginia, a determined hospice worker meets her match in her 90-year-old patient. Grace, an altogether feisty, illiterate, and “amazing” woman, is living out her final days. By her side is Gloria, a lonely ex-New Yorker; a begrudging, woeful, and Harvard-educated hospice volunteer. They couldn’t be less alike. Or could they? Confined in the remote forest cabin, the odd couple struggle to find common ground. Each has powerful things to confess and insight to share with the other.

They tackle the great unknown that is death, with varying degrees of horror and humour. Hilarity ensues as the two overcome their culture clash and they begin to rely on each other. Two very different yet ordinary women, the stories they share reveal the honour in an ordinary life well lived. Grace and Glorie is a tale of hope and connection, its homespun wisdom born of hardship appeals to audiences of all ages and experience.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Pamela Halstead
At first glance Grace and Gloria could not seem more opposite - old vs young, rural vs urban, educated vs uneducated, faithful vs atheist, extravagant vs frugal, and the list goes on. Yet they not only forge a bond, they discover they have valuable insights to give each other. The journey through life to death is complex; guidance and inspiration can come from unexpected places. If you stay open to possibility, no matter how far along the journey you are, you may find there are still surprises. And at any point in the journey, no matter how closed your heart is, it can still be opened. I have been blessed in my life with a number of elder women who have not only inspired me, but offered me rare and lovely gifts through their wisdom and friendships. I am still always surprised when their time comes, as I think of them no differently than my closest contemporary girlfriends. Age seems irrelevant when there is shared laughter and tears! I dedicate this production to Phyllis Gray, my newest “Grace”, who inspires me daily with her courage, determination, kindness and laughter as she faces the greatest challenge of her journey.
Pamela Halstead Director As Artistic Director of Ship’s Company (Parrsboro, NS) then Lunchbox Theatre (Calgary, AB), Pamela produced or directed over 60 productions, mostly world premieres. Based in Nova Scotia, she artistically helms DMV Theatre, advises Valley Summer Theatre and coordinates PERFORM! in the Schools. In 2013, Pamela received the inaugural Evans Award for her contribution to the Calgary theatre community. She is thrilled to return to Chemainus after directing last season’s Over the River and Through the Woods.

David Berenbaum
When Buddy the Elf discovers he’s actually an ordinary human, he has just one wish – to discover his true identity! Off he goes on a solo journey from the North Pole to the big city. But finding his father, and reuniting his family, brings more surprises than a Christmas morning! As Buddy encounters skeptics, scrooges, and people on the naughty-list, he realizes that his greater purpose is to bring back the holiday spirit! It will take every elfish trick he knows, maybe a miracle, and a lot of holiday cheer for his plan to work. Elf: The Musical, based on the motion picture of the same name, is a smash hit – a “tight, polished, expensive-looking affair that has enough jokes for adults and enough special effects for kids,” (Mark Kennedy, Associated Press). The acclaimed show promises a wonderful experience of live music, superb singing, energetic dancing, laughable follies, and a charming story of togetherness. Featuring 18 seasonal songs, and an incredible ensemble cast! Book tickets now for this all-ages Broadway delight!
