ARTIST DIRECTOR’S NOTES MARK DUMEZ
... we will continue goals of advancing the arts, enriching the region and building community.
The beauty of Once is that it’s not your typical musical – from the contemporary lineup of singer-songwriter tunes to the love story in which two unlikely characters find themselves, to the cast of unique characters. The story may stretch your expectations of musical theatre and capture your heart in its authentic look at trying to keep the fires of creativity and hope burning when forces conspire against them. This tide change of the heart may begin gently, or it may be stirred by a whirlwind, but the best kind moves toward the care and consideration of all. While we are proud of the scale and scope of this arts organization in this, the 26th Season, the focus of the work has not been about bravado. The ethos sewn into fabric of this arts society is one of service in consideration of the audience, artist, staff and any who encounter Chemainus Theatre Festival. As with any exploration, this hasn’t meant limitless resources or perfection, but year over year this focus on service has inspired many modes of care in playmaking. It might mean securing language accommodations from rights holders for a production, responding to an artist who auditioned or creating a generous rehearsal hall environment. In each step of bringing a show to life on stage, opportunities to focus on service abound. We thank you for exploring with us and for joining us at the start of this season. We have lots of fun in store and look forward to serving Vancouver Island through our continued goals of advancing the arts, enriching the region and building community.

Once is not your typical love story. The play is based on the book by Enda Walsh and the movie directed by John Carney which was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival. It brought Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglovà, the musical genius behind the show, an Oscar for the song “Falling Slowly” and the soundtrack won a Grammy. It’s no wonder the stage play swept the Tony Awards in 2012, being nominated for 11 and winning 8, including BEST MUSICAL. Not limited to industry awards, Once has won hearts and critical acclaim with a unique love story, memorable songs, enchanting characters, and clever stagecraft which invites the audience to become a part of the play. All the music in Once is played by the actors. Productions of this play have seen the actors playing over 27 different instruments including guitars, violins, ukuleles, mandolins, cajons, melodica, harmonica, piano, bass guitar, a banjo, drums, accordion and a cello! The music leaves room for interpretation, allowing the actors to express their characters musically, subtly improvising in the moment, and playing their rhythms off one another so that each performance is slightly different. When Guy meets Girl, they make beautiful music together in this unconventional yet wise and intensely moving tale of passion and hope. Busking on the streets for cash and working in his father’s vacuum repair shop, Guy is a heartbroken musician who has given up on his passion and creative aspirations. Girl is an immigrant with a generous heart and a complicated history. She is both Temptress and Muse, contradictory and gritty as she is inspired by Guy’s plight to dust off her own once bright sense of hope. They are as different as two people can be, but their stubborn compassion and love for creating inspiring music bring them together. As their passion and creativity are restored, their other loves and obligations beckon, pulling them in different directions while also opening them to new hope and opportunities only dreamed of before. In this emotionally captivating story, Guy and Girl will make you will laugh, move you to tears, and share with you universal feeling of joy which comes of joining together in song. Once is a truly original modern musical which reminds us there as many ways to love as there are songs to sing. VA N C O U V E R

Million Dollar Quartet is a lively two-step back in time to the rockabilly era of southern-fried music. The unique blend of soul, gospel, and folk is a musical jambalaya for those of us who like a little spice in our life. In this jukebox box musical, we enjoy once more the wild spirit and good ole’ boy fun of not one but four musical greats! A young Jerry Lee Lewis plays piano for Carl Perkins when chart-topper Elvis Presley and rising-star Johnny Cash make their appearance, transforming a day-in-the-life recording session into a red-hot, landmark day in rock-and-roll history. During the impromptu jam session, the music and background stories of these artists intertwine to reveal both their humble beginnings and those of Sam Phillips’ Sun Record Studio. They and the small, independent music producer went their separate ways afterward, but their influence changed the face of the music industry forever and they became musical legends whose songs still bring out our wild side and love of fun.
