“SOULARD MULTIDISCIPLINARY LIBRARY” St. Louis MO
This proposal is located in a historic French neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri. The population of 3,440 has a median age of 31, 46% family households, and an average household income of $50,800. The Library intends to serve the community for events, scholastic endeavors and more. The library is surrounded with a unique urban context, which served an initial driver for design. On the Southeast an interstate highway rushes with trucks and cars. On the Northwest a century old church serves the neighborhood. On the Northeast a residential fabric takes hold into the distance. Extruded ‘fingers’ in the design point towards these sights of interest as a way to engage the user with the diversity of the surrounding area.
Average Weather for Soulard is a high in January 39 degrees’ low in January 21 degrees. High in July 88 degrees, low in July 68 degrees. And annual precipitation of 57 inches. The juxtaposition of hot and cold during season calls for a high R-value in the design. The heavy rain and tornados necessitates an air-tight & vapor tight barrier and careful attention to runoff and drainage. The ventilation system will rely on Natural un-forced air as the extruded ‘fingers’ are conducive to capturing and distributing wind. Material choice aims for a concrete structure with triple-pane glazing for all apertures. The library, research & community center backs up against the highway therefor careful attention to sound deflection in the posterior will be implemented through acoustic insulation strategies. 01
The four story building is programed according to sights and points of interest. The first floor serves as a welcome space and general event and congregation center. As the user ascends the program for the wing facing St. Vincent Church is a religion book stack. The program for the wing facing The MacArthur Bridge is an engineering book stack. The program for the wing facing the Gateway Arch is a math and science book stack. The program for the wing facing Highway I-55 is a transit and planning book stack. The program for the wing facing the Old Factories is a history book stack. The program for the wing facing St. Louis downtown is a geography book stack.
Generally, the shifting and stacking for floor to floor creates distinguished reading experiences. The shifting and stacking ‘fingers’ also create a dynamic architecture form. Negotiation between cantilevers and overlapping is implemented for a successful core to serve both structure and circulation. These design strategies aim to create the most practical, beautiful and buildable multidisciplinary center for the residents and visitors in Soulard, Missouri.

Old Factories Surrounding old factories are the reminder of St. Louis prosperity from Industrial area to 1970.
The Gateway Arch The Gateway Arch is the world's tallest arch, the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and landmark of St. Louis.

Also housed are galleries, faculty offices, an outdoor rooftop studio, and teaching spaces for Art History. The Visual Arts Building replaces an original arts building from 1936, which was heavily damaged during a flood of the University of Iowa campus in June 2008. The new building forms an Arts Quad with Art Building West, which was designed by Steven Holl Architects and has drawn students from all over campus to its social spaces and library since opening in 2006. Together they form a visual arts campus for theorizing, teaching and making art.

This site is in Barcelona's Gracia district at the intersection of Calle Torrent de l'Olla and Travesera de Gracia. This is a major interface between Gracia and the city in every sense, particularly for traffic. In this context, the library has become excessively representative with respect to the small size of the allotment, which has the same dimensions as the local urban fabric and the same construction potential as that of the nearby architecture. Expressing this mismatch between container and content; this non-coincidence between the common mould with private architecture and public use of the 'column of flats' has led us to include various degrees of buckling on the facade as a system for expressing the exceptional importance of what is going on inside. DESIGN CONCEPT
A library is a collection of sources of information and resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing, and also St. Louis is a city of rich history. So, Soulard library is trying to embrace most of the rich urban context into the building and sharing knowledges to St.Louis residents. To do that, deisnger created four extruded space on each floor, facing diffrent urban context. Four extruded space are shifted from each floor to face different urban context. The shifted space is supported by five structural core tubes, four of them are located at the edge of the space and one is in the middle, serving as transportation core.

Five structure tubes are the main load bearing component of the building. The four outer cores are designed sufficiently strong to resist all lateral loads on the building, thereby allowing the center core tube to be simply framed for gravity loads.
