The Duplex Housing Project

Projects before the Master Program

All works are solo work. Except the human figures in the Massive Housing Project, all visuals, designs, renderings and concepts in this portfolio are created by Chenghui Nan.

The Library Project The library project is first year studio project based on St. Louis. The building is located in a triangular site, next to the high way, near a church and residencial housings.

Site Plan

The library is four stories building with mutiple function. First floor is for functional use, second floor is for the childrens, and the third floor and fourth floor are for new media.

One of the difficulties of this project is the structural design. The extruded tube space creates many cantilivered comcrete parts which may require careful thought from structural engineer.

Massive Housing Project The massive housing project is second year core studio design project. It is a project for fifty families‘ housing, located in the Buenos Aires. The project site is given to a team of three, each work on designated site and three designs are adjacent to each other.

Floor Plans

Site Plan

Since the house is located in the south hemisphere, the sun is strong at north side. So in my design, I designed large openings on the north sides, which also mediate the lacking of sunlights on the south side due to other students design.

North Facade Rendering

The different extrusion of each room make the inner corridor dynamic and complex, which also create so many interesting spaces along side the corridor like inner indoor garden and public balcony.

The east side is the “front side of my building. Also East side have the strongest sun light. So the design of the east side is fully utilizing the incoming sunlight. The opening of the housing, the orientation of the corridor follow the sunlights.

Public Balcony

Public Balconies The public balcony work as community space for the building. Also the public balcony provide sunlights to the inner balcony. More over, the they are the breathing spaces in the narrow inner corridor.

Duplex Housing Project The duplex housing project is first year studio project located in St. Louis. The building is located in between two residential buildings, which made the project long and narrow like tunnel.

Duplex Housing Project

SITE PLAN

The duplex housing is a project for two family housing. The two families are divided by the floors, at first floor lives older family and at second floor lives younger family.

The inspiration of this project came from telescope. When we see through telescope, light from different direction merge into one point, and same thing happens to my conceptual model 1. Lights from different direction pass through the “tube and merge and divide at some place.

First floor and second floor follow different “tube” paths. First floor is a linear “tube” and second floor is a more “dynamic tube”.

Yanbian Building Project Yanbian Building is a imaginary steel structure skyscraper. It would be the land mark architecture in Yanji City, the capital of Yanbian Korean Chinese Autonomic State. The local government wants to build an landmark skyscraper to attract more investors and tourists. So here is my plan. The project used innovative ring structure to construct, the inner ring and outer ring supports the building as well as creating interesting inner space.

Outer Structure

Outer Structure is composed by Huge Ring Beam System and six columns. Inner Structure

Inner Structure is a complex structural system with four columns and some small ring beams. Floors

Floors are flexibility designed to meets spacial and structural needs. 15

Top Garden Structural element Top Garden is the best panoramic view place. Visitors could see the whole city on the Top Garden. Positions Atrium Atrium are public spaces shared by two or three floors. Atrium also served as Structural purpose.

Entrance design is different from above floor. Space has been cut to impress the coming visitors.

Inner Part Truss could have seismic reactor (2nd picture), it may deform first under huge earthquake (3rd picture) and consume earthquake energy, so that the whole structure could stand still.

Floors in the project are connection elements between Outer Part and Inner Part. Outer Part, Inner Part and Floors work together as a structural system.

7 The basic idea of this project is that using mechanical device to control the altitude of a building.

Telescopic Building In this project, I want to explore potentiality of telescopic building, a building that can rise with sun in the morning and hide to the underground when disaster comes. Image a building can change her altitude, image a building can disappear just in front of you. Here is my project.

The building changes her shape according the requirement.

Structural Analysis

Design Overview

The main advantage of this kind of building is that it has ground protection and can resist on natural disasters like earthquake. Single unit

Outer glass

Core column

Inner glass Main unit

In basic seismic design theory, the whole structure could be simplified as a stick with several “mass balls”. Multiple units

Attached units

When an earthquake strikes, “mass balls” are shaken with several modes. At last, it would cause structural failure.

Structural floor Outer column Inner column If telescopic structure hides into the ground, the outer soil would work as buffer and prevent the structure from damages.

Buffered

Huge hydraulic pump Earth pressure is equilibrium in normal condition. And if there is intense force like earthquake force added, the ground would gradually absorb them and minimize structural damage.

Facade of Flaws

Processing Diagram

Modern facade is smooth and perfect, however, in this project, I want to explore potential facade of flaws, facade that is imperfect. Also, through the flawed facade, I want to find out the beauty of flaws. Flaws are normally indicator of old, however, intentional addition of flaws may create unexpected beauty.
