AN EVENING WITH TERRY WAITE In January 1987 Terry Waite was captured in Beirut whilst he was attempting to secure the release of hostages. He was kept in solitary confinement for four years and kept hostage in total for almost five years, 1763 days in all. His story was on the front pages and TV screens around the world. It is difficult to think of anyone else whose integrity and humanity are so striking. When he speaks, Terry’s quiet authority and personal conviction shine through. This man suffered so much at the hands of others, and he now shares what he has learned from his experiences, with humour and clarity. His honesty and straightforward manner endear him to all ages, who are often surprised by his warm sense of humour. In this rare evening, he will discuss how he retained his humanity under such extreme conditions and will also draw some conclusions for living in the so called 'normal' world.

But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman – Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria) lurk with very different motives for their visit.

FEATURING THE HORSHAM BOROUGH BRASS BAND

It's 1994 and the miners are striking as the local colliery faces closure. CODEBREAKERS THE STORY OF ENIGMA This show by Dr Mark Baldwin, presents one of the Second World War’s most fascinating stories. The Allied Codebreakers, who deciphered a vast number of German secret messages, used the intelligence gained to hasten Allied victory. The Germans had entrusted their secret communications to an ingenious ciphering machine. The Enigma was portable, easily operated, and could be set up in millions of ways as the codes used were changed every 24 hours. Mark Baldwin has given over 500 presentations on World War II codebreakers, Enigma, Bletchley Park and the History of Cryptography and over 70 presentations on Special Operations to audiences totalling over 50,000. He is the only person to be asked to speak on ‘The Codebreakers’ at London’s Special Forces Club, and on ‘Special Operations’ at Bletchley Park, home of the codebreakers. He has been handling Enigma machines for longer than anyone in Germany’s armed forces and supplied the 4-rotor Enigma machine for use in the recent film ‘The Imitation Game.’

JONATHAN DIMBLEBY The Battle of the Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War

‘The Battle of the Atlantic was crucial to the Allied victory. If the German U-boats had prevailed, the maritime artery across the Atlantic would have been severed. Mass hunger would have consumed Britain, and the Allied armies would have been prevented from joining in the invasion of Europe. There would have been no D-Day. The Battle of the Atlantic interweaves fascinating contemporary diaries and letters with a thrilling narrative and, uniquely, the overall picture of the Second World War. From senior members of the competing High Commands in London, Washington, Berlin and Moscow down to the humblest sailor, Jonathan Dimbleby tells the epic story of the decisions that led to victory, and the horror and humanity endured in those perilous seas.’
