DA gives GMM 14 days to respond to their demands Residents stood united on Friday when they partook in a peaceful DA march to keep Govan Mbeki Municipality’s lights on. They handed over a memorandum of demands to the Acting Municipal Manager, T Mhlanga. One of these demands was that the acting Municipal Manager must ensure payment of Eskom debt which caused huge uproar last month when Eskom decided that they had enough of empty promises and cut power to Secunda, eMbalenhle, Bethal and Trichardt. Violent protests

broke out in eMbahlenhle and after threats of marching to the Mayor’s house were made, Eskom were paid about R50 million. But this amount doesn’t seem like a lot compared to the R450 million that is still owed to Eskom. Govan Mbeki Municipality has been on Eskom’s disconnection list for nonpayment since 2015 and although arrangements between GMM and Eskom took place, GMM never kept their promises. The municipality owed Eskom R124 million in 2014 and has managed

to more than triple this amount in the past 3 years. According to DA Councilor, Marietjie Fourie, the municipality’s inability to pay due debt is pushing GMM closer to the brink of disaster. She also said that the municipality failed to pay Eskom, because of their (GMM) systematic failure to implement revenue generation and collection systems that are viable on the long run. This is also the reason why GMM is owed R848 million. The DA also demanded that the municipality stick to their contractual

agreements with Eskom and to improve revenue generation and revenue collection systems. More demands were for the municipality to pay Eskom and all creditors within the 30-day period, as determined by MFMA and to not use the Local Government Equitable Share for repaying Eskom, but rather for community upliftment, as originally intended. They DA said that, should the municipality not respond positively by 17 November, their demonstrations will intensify.

Accidents rife on local roads

An injured passanger is being moved to the ambulance by Langamed Services South

The safety vest is in stark contrast with the destruction on the N17.

Accident scene on the Road to Kriel

Sunday afternoon saw the resources of the emergency services stretched as they had to respond to three accidents at roughly the same time. Despite all the publicity in the local newspapers, as well as the national news, accidents continue to occur at an alarming rate in the Govan Mbeki municipal area – especially on the N17 toll road. The accidents do not only happen on the N17, but the local roads surrounding the towns in GMM also suffer the same fate. One of the main reasons for the accidents is the motorists’ impatience, according to some of the emergency personnel. Some eyewitnesses also stated that drivers tend to overtake on a barrier line with no regard to the oncoming traffic. Early unconfirmed reports stated that an accident on Sunday afternoon near Trichardt was caused when the driver of a white LDV allegedly overtook on a barrier line and collided with an approaching vehicle. Fortunately, no fatalities occurred. As mentioned in a previous report of The Bulletin, the N17 is one of the top 20 most dangerous roads in South Africa and should be driven with caution. Another factor that most drivers miss is the fact that the speed limit between Trichardt and Bethal is 100km/h and not 120km/h. The accidents on Sunday occurred on the N17 near Trichardt, another near Emba and one on the road towards Kriel from Kinross.

Letaba, Satara.

Aftrede, dink hy bitter.

Little Paws holds Tapas and Vino evening Little Paws Big Hearts recently hosted a Tapas and Vino evening at Graceland. The evening was well attended by a large number of people. Cheese platters were on sale, but the Tapas had to be ordered in advance. A selection of wines could be tasted, as well as a brandy or two. The main aim is to bolster their finances as the veterinary bill is really taking a large sum out of their operational budget. The main aim of Little Paws Big Hearts is not only to alleviate the suffering and mistreatment of animal in rural areas, but also to educate people on how to care for their animals. LPBH turned four on 2 November and here are their own words as supplied by Louis Kempen form LPBH. “If you have nothing to do, do it then” (author unknown). In the beginning we never dreamt that this small Little Paws Big Hearts will grow to a giant of an organisation and it is still growing.

When I say “GIANT” I mean the heart of Little Paws is a Giant! If you look where we started and see where we are now, it is amazing, just wonderful. This didn’t happen by myself or Sons doing, no, it is because we have such a wonderful passionate team. So much is going on behind the scenes: vet runs, sterilisations, collector tins, organising festivals, park walks, Facebook, etc. Thank you, guys, we love you for it. Then last, but not least, our supporters and sponsors: Wow, how wonderful can it get? We appreciate you, every drop, every donation, every best wish, thank you so much. Without you we will not make it. The past 4 years we were always busy generating funds for our cause. We shadowed waiters, attended flea markets, wine festivals and Paws in the park. Over and above our normal operation, our main objective now is vehicles and land for a sanctuary. Thank you to all involved, thank you to our vets, how good can it be?

SANBS Honours donors Graceland played host to the yearly SANBS Donor Awards on Thursday, 2 November. The tables were beautifully decorated and the hall looked stunning. Donor that achieved donation milestones were invited to receive recognition from the South African Blood Services. The evening started with a few speeches. These covered the critical levels of blood SANBS is experiencing, as well as a report on the activities of SANBS for the past year. Lee-ann Francke gave a heart-warming and emotional account about the need for blood donations. Her father needed 55 units of blood while hospitalised. She has now made a commitment to help get 55 units for SANBS and recently donated her first unit of blood. She has also decided to get as many people as possible to donate blood. The stars of the night were undoubtedly the donors that donate unselfishly every 65 days. The donor ages varied from all ages, but

one can only donate from age 16 years. The donor of the year was Alwyn Claasen who donated 350 units of blood throughout his life. He achieved this milestone at the age of 80 years. Alwyn said in his characteristic humble way that the honour is not his, but gave full credit to God for allowing him to achieve this milestone. He continued to tell everyone how he always asked for the opportunity to achieve the next milestone and so on. Alwyn has been on the donor committee for more than 20 years and asked the committee to join him on stage. The evening was concluded with excellent food and music. Well done to SANBS, but most of all, thank you to all the donors who make such a difference in strangers’ lives. The Bulletin would like to call on everyone to go and make a difference and donate blood. The levels are critically low and there is only blood left for 1.6 days. Go and make a difference donate today!

Explaining the motivation behind the magic, he says: “After adopting my two boys, I wanted to work on a project that has real meaning; to produce a creative body of work that could stand alone, make a statement and be thoroughly entertaining for young and old alike. “And in doing so, it was equally important to break from the traditional

format and take the local cirque industry one step closer to animal-free entertainment.” Griffin has always been a firm proponent for corporate social investment and is therefore thrilled to be joining forces with the Peermont group which has a strong CSI commitment. “It was also essential that this new creative would allow us to not only inspire our audiences, but to also reach the communities in which we thrive, with a special focus on the children who embody our future.” The Fantastic Grifizzi Brothers’ animalfree circus will be at Graceland until 26 November as South Africa’s first official licensed casino commemorates two decades as a premier entertainment and leisure venue.

is nie of die dier onherstelbaar beseer of té oud is. (14 600 dae in 40 jaar).

Osizweni Develops ECD learners through competitions Early childhood development, a concept that might not be that familiar with our community, is slowly becoming more and more popular. Parents and schools are realising the impact proper early learning has on children. Osizweni’s Toy Library provides children at the early childhood developmental phase (age 3-7) with opportunities to use a variety of educational toys that have been specifically designed to cultivate their cognitive, social, psychological and physical competencies in fun and interesting ways. The centre is not merely for the purpose of keeping the children occupied outside the conventional classroom. It is facilitated learning through a wide array of educational equipment, guided by practitioners and the Toy Library staff. As the children navigate through the different educational tasks, they acquire skills and competencies (such as sustained concentration; adequate grasp of chronology; resilience; social cohesion; self-confidence) that enhance their school readiness levels, and allow their transition from preschool to school to be less stressful. Over 30 Early Childhood learning Centres visit the Toy Library weekly, in an attempt to benefit from the many educational resources made available to them. On an annual basis, the Toy Library hosts a competition for the top 10 attending Early Childhood Centre’s. These Centres compete against one another in an aim to achieve the following: • Give learners an opportunity to express themselves by displaying the knowledge and skills they have acquired at the Centre throughout the year • Introduce learners to healthy competition from a young age.

• To lay a good foundation enabling better progression in life. • To encourage and enhance the love for numeracy and literacy. • Encourage and motivate Practitioners through the performance of their learners. • Allows Practitioners introspection of their work. Learners compete in teams by taking part in 15 different activities, these activities included puzzles; numeracy worksheets; patterns; Maths lotto; Maths bingo; visual tracking; threading and matching objects. These interactive activities are either done manually or are computer based. ECD centres rotate their group of learners between activities. Learners begin the activity at the same time, the top three winners in each activity are selected based on correctly completing the activity in the shortest amount of time. The school with the highest amount of placings wins the overall competition. This year’s winners for the Grade R group of learners are Illuminate Day Care Centre in first place followed by Bambanani Day Dare Centre in second place and Isiqalo Day Care Centre in third place. The winners for the age 4-5 group of learners are Ekujabuleni Day Care Center in first place followed by illuminate Day Care Centre in second place and Isidingo Day Care Centre in third place. ”The impact which the Toy Library has on learners is always seen during these competitions. Most of the best performing Day Care Centres are those who are committed and consistent in their weekly attendance to the Toy Library the learners did well and we are very thankful to the Day Care Centres that participated in the competitions” said Maker Masemola, Osizweni Toy Library Senior Practitioner. Enorme visse gevang by hengelkompetisie
