Lion still on the loose

Many people thought a story posted on The Bulletin’s website last week about a lion on the loose near the Leeuwpan Dam was an April Fool’s joke. This was however, no joke. The Secunda Dog Unit was in fact called to assist in tracking down the supposedly escaped lion. According to Capt Andre Joubert from the Secunda Dog Unit a truck driver

claimed to have spotted the animal on Monday evening (27 March) between Leslie and Standerton near Leeuwpan Dam. Members of the Dog Unit at the time had their hands full with protestors at Kinross and were forced to call in back up to help find lion tracks in the area. Johan Coetzee from the Mpumalanga Nature Conservation Department

said on Friday people often mistake smaller felines such as caracal for lions. “If it really was a lion, it must definitely be hungry by now and will soon want to feed. Cattle or sheep on nearby farms are obvious sources of food.” If any of these are caught, Nature Conservation will be able to determine if it was indeed a lion. Despite no new leads at time of going

to print on Monday night, Johan has a team on standby to dart the animal when sighted. He suspects if it really was a lion, that it must have been stolen and then escaped while being transported. “Lion owners need permits to transport lions and we have no record of recently issued permits.” If you have any information or spot the lion, contact Johan at 072 361 6104.

Vehicle break-downs and slow repairs are to blame for the non-rendering of refuse removal services in the Govan Mbeki municipal area. These problems, according to Bheki Kubheka, senior manager in the office of the municipal manager and acting head of communications and marketing, have caused an enormous backlog for the municipality. “The municipality would like to offer its

sincere apology to the community of Govan Mbeki Municipality “We are working around the clock to address the backlog with very limited trucks and to date we have removed 50% of the waste throughout the municipality with the target of achieving 100% by the end of the week.” Bheki said if this target can be reached by the end of the week, the refuse removal teams can resume the normal schedule of collection. “We thank the community for their patience during this time.”

Deliver the services we are paying for This is the refuse piled up on the road 3 days after it was due to be collected on Friday 17 March. It was eventually collected on Monday 20 March after the stray cats and dogs had a good chance at ripping the bags apart and leaving a stinking mess for the residents to clean up. That was the last time we saw the refuse removal truck in our area and refuse due for collection on Friday 24th and Friday 30th has not been collected. Perhaps we should refuse to pay for this lack of service for the days missed. The executive mayor Ms. Florah Maboa Boltman asks residents to cooperate and work with the municipality. No problem, we can do that, but when will the municipality keep to their side of the deal and deliver the services we are paying for? Another thing, Operation Kodiko seems to be a big joke. Do they understand what “Zero tolerance” means? It means if you do not pay your municipal account on time your

services will be discontinued. They have a list of all consumers, so what is so difficult about looking through it and disconnecting power to the defaulters, as they do in Secunda town where the majority of residents pay on time? Maybe they are “being nice” to the people who constitute the large majority of defaulters for political reasons, IE Votes! Norman Johnston Secunda

More than 1 200 pupils from local high schools attended the launch of the campaign on the second day (24 March) at the Gert Sibande College

Nick Balkirshen (CEO and Principal of Gert Sibande TVET College), Mduduzi Manana (Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training) and Palesa Rakometsi (Acting Director: Career Management and World Skills South Africa at the Department of Higher Education and Training) at the campaign held at Graceland Casino on Thursday, 23 March. campus in Standerton. Armyworms have Mpu’ famers on guard The fall armyworm (FAW) plague, which has caused much damage on maize farms since first appearing in South Africa in December 2016, has now also found its way to soya bean crops. Igni Bouwer, a Laeveld Agrochem agent in the Ermelo area, says the FAW was identified on a soya bean farm in the Dirkiesdorp district between Piet Retief and Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga on 6 March. “So far it seems as if the spread to soya beans in the area is only limited to one farm that has about 250 ha of soya beans under irrigation,” Bouwer said. The FAW pest, which has made its way south through Africa since the beginning of 2016, and for the first time appeared in Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga in December 2016, has since spread to farms in all provinces except the Western Cape. To date, the FAW has primarily caused damage to maize crops, although an isolated case of the infestation on potatoes was reported on 23 February in Loskop Valley in Limpopo. According to Potatoes SA, limited damage was caused. According to a CropLife South Africa report released on the outbreak on 8 March 2017, the FAW has also been found in sorghum, cotton, some vegetables, probably in groundnuts and in natural veld around maize fields. There have also been fears that the pest can find its way to the country’s

sugarcane plantations, but according to Cedric Mboyisa, South African Sugar Association’s (SASA) Communications and Media Manager, the fall army worm has not yet been found on any sugarcane crops. The summer edition (January – March 2017) of the South African Sugar Journal reports that in recent weeks the pest has been recorded on maize in the cane belt of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. “However, the pest has not yet been found on sugarcane despite being found on maize in close proximity to cane. Specialists and biosecurity teams from the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) are on high alert and are monitoring sugarcane and adjacent crops. Should the pest attack sugarcane at some stage, control measures would be implemented. Without clear evidence that sugarcane is currently under threat, it is best that the pest be controlled in those crops where it is currently a problem,” the report concluded. Professor Mark Laing, senior professor and director of the African Centre for Crop Improvement at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, says the FAW has a wide host range and it will attack crops like potatoes. “However, it does not really like the vegetable and rather prefers grass cuts.” Corné Liebenberg, marketing director at Laeveld Agrochem, said that in

order to control the spread of the FAW pest, early detection is essential and that FAW-specific insecticides must be applied in the early stages of the larvae’s development. “It is very important to stay updated and to only use insecticides that are registered and recently confirmed to be effective against FAW as resistance to even some relatively new active ingredients has appeared. Furthermore, as with all Lepidopteran

pests on maize, corrective control after cob and stalk penetration is not possible,” says Liebenberg. He said Laeveld Agrochem, which assists with crop protection and precision farming, has agents throughout South Africa who are ready to assist farmers with solutions to the FAW problem or any other enquiries they may have. Farmers can call the Laeveld Agrochem emergency number on 060 458 8483.

Melissa loves to cook Beauty is on fire for God Chef Melissa Cordier prefers cooking traditional food. “I like typical mom’s food like bobotie with yellow rice,” said Melissa. Melissa started as the Fortis Hotel Evander’s new chef this month. Her love for cooking began in her high school days when she started taking hotel and catering as a subject. “People have to eat, so there will always be work for me, even if I have to butter sandwiches and peel onions,” said Melissa. She grew up in Stellenbosch and after matric she studied catering and hospitality at a college in the Cape. She worked in England in the hospitality industry for two years, but she had to return to South Africa when her visa expired. She worked as a pastry (dessert) chef, a sous chef and later as head chef at hotels in the Cape and Waterval Boven. As a pastry chef, her favourite dessert

to make is Crème Brûlée. However, she does not like to eat dessert much because she works with it every day. Melissa does not get tired of cooking and working with food, she still cooks at home as well a few times a week. “I like opening the fridge to see what is in there and to figure out what to cook with what is in the fridge.” Her mother is more of a baker and her father was a chef in the army, but nowadays he only cooks for himself. She experienced another part of the industry when she worked at an old age home in Bredasdorp for two years. “It was interesting and I enjoyed it,” said Melissa. In her free time, Melissa enjoys watching television, especially sports and she wants to try her hand at golf again. She is a proud Stormers supporter and her favourite meal to make is chocolate curry. - Jana Oosthuizen

Melissa Cordier started cooking while she was in high school and still loves her job as a chef. She is the chef at Fortis Hotel in Evander.

Pastor Beauty Tshabalala reaches out to women in prison and has been involved at Bethal Prison for 18 years. Before she embarked on this full-time prison ministry, she visited female prisoners in her free time and encouraged them. She believes the Lord called her to prison ministry when He gave her Isaiah 61:1 that reads: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;’ “Every time I prayed or read my Bible, I just received Isaiah 61 and I meditated on this Scripture and saw visions of the prison,” said Beauty. “I couldn’t rest until I saw myself doing it in real life. “I have to preach the good news to the poor and people in prison are poor, because they don’t have Christ.” It was not easy to go back to prison as Beauty experienced spiritual attacks on her life and was hesitant to go back, but then she would dream

about the prisoners who called her to go back and her passion would return. Beauty helped the prisoners to enrol in Bible School and some of them already finished their first year of Bible School and graduated. She tries to help the prisoners find jobs when they are released from prison. Her ministry, God’s Fire Ministries, moved to a new premise four months ago where Beauty also takes homeless people in and give them a place to live. However, they must abide by strict rules and must cook and work in the garden and also attend church services. Beauty also visits hospitals often and serve people there. “People in hospitals are heartbroken and also need Christ.” Beauty was ordained as a pastor in 2007 and is currently busy with her Honours degree. She is married and has three children aged 18, 15 and seven. Her ministry started out with street revivals and visiting shacks where she prayed for the people and told them about Christ. Beauty has big plans for her prison ministry and the church building.

Sy het egter haar been weens kanker verloor. Kanker is in 2006 in Jana se enkel

gediagnoseer. “My boetie het my aan Josef herinner. Daar was agt kolle op Jana se longe.

Well, the time has finally arrived. The comedy industry in this country has grown so much in terms of offerings and demand. South Africans seem to have an insatiable appetite for it and hopefully I can whet their tastebuds with this new show,” says Tumi. Raw and unapologetic, the show promises to be thought provoking and provide a glimpse of what life could be like if we made a little effort – putting

us all, and herself, under the spotlight. Since beginning her career in 2006, Tumi has steadily grown into one of SA’s most sought after comedians, with numerous nominations and awards under her belt, including receiving the 2016 YOU Spectacular Award for Best Comedian of the Year. Tumi spent two seasons on the judging panel of etv’s She’s The One and host of the ever trending Our Perfect Wedding for a record 3 seasons after a public demand for her return. 2017 sees Tumi hosting her own shows on SABC – Red Cake and the second season of Point Of Order.
