Leslie under Siege!
Burning tyres used to barricade the road. The Zamokuhle Taxi Association (Zamta) barricaded the main 4-way stop in Leslie on Monday, 7 January. Zamta and Vukta (Vukanini Taxi Association) are at loggerheads regarding the Leandra/Secunda route. There is currently no taxi association that services the Leandra/Secunda route and the commuter has to rely on busses and/or private transport to travel between the two towns. Taxis also barricaded the R29 within Leslie as well as the road from the N17 into Leandra. The protest started very peacefully but tensions rose when the police arrived in numbers and were dressed in riot gear. The secretary of Zamta, Mr AJ Mahlangu (AJ), told the Bulletin that they have permission to operate the Secunda/Leandra route and that Vukanini Taxi Association is refusing that Zamokuhle Taxi Association operates the route. The problem
compounded when Zamta members loaded passengers in Secunda and the Vukta drivers assaulted those passengers. It is then alleged that the police refused to open cases of assault against those responsible. “Only after they had their lawyers involved did the police open assault cases” said AJ. The secretary of Zamta also said that they had a meeting on Saturday, 5 January, with Vukta. The Mayor, Cllr Thandi Nxgonono as well as MMC Cllr Dan Nhlapo represented Govan Mbeki Municipality. MMC Cllr Anthony Makhaye could not attend as he had the incorrect time for the meeting. Vukta was represented by their chairperson Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, his Deputy Secretary and the rank manager.“Vukta refused to talk to our Chairperson” AJ said. “they want us to excuse our Chairperson! The members gave us that mandate. We have to go back to our members to report back.” “The Executive Mayor then said we must compromise,” continued AJ

“What must we compromise?” Zamta had a meeting with the Secunda Cluster Commander on 29 November where they were promised a meeting with all the role players. “That never happened!” said AJ. The members of Zamta said that the Secunda Police is favouring Vukta and did not intervene nor did they act when Vukta intimidated Zamta drivers and burned one of their taxis. “The police even escorted Vukta when they came to Leslie” said the members. Zamta drivers proceeded to the N17 at the Leandra Toll Gate to barricade the N17. SAPS pushed some of the taxis out of the way to clear the road. A short while later Police tried to disperse the handful of drivers that were standing in the road and fired at them with rubber bullets. This resulted in the drivers hurling rocks at the police. Vukta drivers also came to the N17 offramps and confronted the Zamta members. SAPS had to intervene. In Leandra the situation was also
E

peaceful but the roads were still barricaded. POPS (Public Order Police) arrived and the tensions rose. The community started to gather and the taxis slowly moved away. The community tried to set two vehicles alight but the fires were swiftly extinguished. The community did not throw any rocks and did not damage anything except taunting the police. The Colonel in charge decided to take action and dispersed the crowd with rubber bullets. Within a few seconds there were no people to be seen. Reports of stones being thrown later in the day surfaced but the Bulletin could not confirm the reports. The taxi problem in Govan Mbeki Municipality is here to stay and needs to be resolved before anybody gets hurt or even worse... killed. The taxi violence is getting worse and as a community we need to work together to ensure everyone’s safety. - Encee van Huysteen

Accidents this festive season The festive season saw all emergency services prepared for the worst as they do every year. Lo and behold this festive season was not as damning as previous years. There were a few incidents and accidents, but nothing that would have given these brave souls restless nights. Most of the accidents were fender benders with minor injuries although there were a few serious injuries on some accident scenes. The festive season ,normally, brings in a wave of accidents but it would seem that our readers took note of our pleas to stay safe on the roads. AnĂŠ Prinsloo

Electrical faults not a major concern for GMM A terrible tragedy struck the Schroeder family on the night of 14 December 2018 when their little girl, Mechaela lost her life. Mechaela was taking a bath when the supply cables from the electricity grid touched their roof and electrified the whole house. When Mechaela touched the taps, she received a fatal electrical shock as the current surged through her small body. The story of Mechaela gripped our readers and 19 9061 readers engaged with the Facebook post, most expressing their condolences to the family and voicing their support. Residents in Schnetler Street in Bethal were facing a similar problem when two electrical poles fell over into their properties. The supply lines were resting against a palm tree while residents tried to secure the poles. Cries for help to the municipality fell on deaf ears and Cllr Ciska Jordaan struggled to get the municipality to intervene. The situation was growing increasingly more dangerous every day but the municipality did not take corrective
measures. The residents started to complain about receiving electrical shocks when touching taps in their houses. GMM could not afford to
buy the poles needed for the repairs. Even after the tragic death of little Mechaela, the municipality did not heed the calls of the residents. GMM eventually made

makeshift plans to keep the poles upright. The poles that were procured were to short and brackets had to be made to keep the poles together. The makeshift plans however, did not last long as the poles started to slant within days of securing them. It will only be a matter of time before the makeshift plans fail and another possible tragedy would be looming.

Daar was drie vure

Your 1st day at pre-school and primary school Thank goodness, the holiday period is done with, you utter when the children are due back at school. Have we as parents anticipated the “strange world” our children pass into? The song of the Four Jacks and a Jill spring to mind “it’s a strange, strange world we live in…..? Teaching your “going to school child for the first time” about stranger danger is imperative whether you live in a crime-ridden metropolitan city or a laid-back and idyllic small town. The tone, words and examples you use are key to getting the message across without scaring them silly. You don’t want your little one to cower in a corner or underneath the bed every time someone rings the doorbell. On the other hand, you also don’t want him / her running up to people he doesn't know and introducing himself. Talk to your child about the definition of "stranger." Tell him / her that a stranger is anyone who your family does not know well.
Be very specific when describing strangers. Explain that a dangerous person does not have to look scary or weird. Tell him there are plenty of mean people who look perfectly normal and trustworthy. Ask your child to tell you about circumstances where it is acceptable to talk to a stranger or ask one for help. For example, make it clear that if she/he gets separated from you at a department store, she/ he should go to one of the store clerks and explain what happened. Help your children remember who the safe strangers are during your outings by asking him/her to show you examples. Explain to him that safe strangers are generally police officers, firefighters, security guards and people who are working like librarians or a waiter at a restaurant. Teach your scholar how to recognise signs that an adult is dangerous. Tell him/her that anytime an adult asks her to disobey her parents or a caregiver, this is a red
Local church reaches out Pastor Danny Morgan and his wife are the spiritual leaders of a small congregation called Novus Vita which means second chance or new life. During one of his sermons in the wedding venue at Holfontein farm he realised that there might be a need for school stationary for some of his congregation members. Pastor Danny and his congregation launched a project to supply stationary to all the children in his congregation. They approached a few sponsors and were able to raise enough money to start the project. A donation by Mark Brown and his wife really put a spark in the project and kicked the project off on the right foot. They realised
flag that he/she is a probably a bad person. Explain that adults generally do not ask children for help - they ask other adults for help. Make it clear that nice adults do not ask children to go somewhere with them without their parent’s permission. Also explain that a nice adult would never ask a child to keep a secret from her family. Rehearse with your children so they understand how to react if a stranger approaches them. Tell them that mean adults know how to outsmart kids and make them do things they wouldn’t normally do. For instance, pretend you're a stranger and beg him to help you locate your lost kitten. Plead with them and play on their sympathies by saying that the kitten may run into the road if the child doesn’t help find it quickly. Repeat the role-playing once a week - or more often - and use different scenarios each time. This ensures that your children truly understand what you are teaching them. Instruct your child or children
to tell a trusted adult anytime he/she feels uncomfortable around a grownup or older teen who exhibits any red flags like trying to get him/her to do something he/she doesn't want to do for example: touching them in an inappropriate manner or saying bad things about people they love. If there is no adult available, tell your little tiger to run away from the stranger as quickly and as fast as possible while yelling: “No, stranger!” A well-behaved child may be reticent about showing any type of disrespect to an adult. Explain that protecting himself/herself from harm is crucial to you and the rest of his family. Tell him/her that he/ she will never receive punishment for his/her actions if they felt they were in danger. Let us all enjoy, with our most precious gift, a safe future. Remember, you as the one they trust, is the primary line of defense against the “STANGER DANGER”. - Aart van Reedijk

They had enough stationary to supply 23 children with what was needed for school. Pastor Danny said to the Bulletin “I realised again that the more you give the more you would receive and not necessary money but in other ways as well.” Mark said to the congregation as he handed the stationary to the children “If you pray you have to believe what you pray.” You can join Pastor Danny every Sunday at 10H00 on the farm Holfontein.

onderwysers.

Autism: the second chance
Autism is not something people talk about every day or at all. Nowadays people are more open to understand what it is and how it affects the lives of those parents with children that suffer from autism. Most people do not even know what autism is or that there are different types of autism. The dictionary explaines autism: a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterised by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. WebMD explains it better: Autism is a complex neurobehavioral condition that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviours. Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism consists of three types: Autistic Syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome and
Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Autistic Syndrome is also better known as “classic” autism and the symptoms are the following: significant language delays, social and communication challenges and unusual behaviours and interests. Asperger’s Syndrome is one of the milder types of autism. Someone with Asperger’s Syndrome might experience the same symptoms of Autistic Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder but much less so than those diagnosed with the other two types. Pervasive Developmental Disorder better known as Atypical Autism. People will be diagnosed with this type of autism if they have characteristics of the other two types. This type of autism is also characterised as follows: These people tend to be the highest functioning autistic types and simply do not fit into any of the other categories or types of autism. After knowing and understanding
more about autism it is time to introduce you, our loyal reader, to Donovan Bender. Donovan was diagnosed with severe autism and profound disability when he was a little boy. His parents realised that he was behind with his development when he was one and consulted a doctor. One doctor’s visit led to another, CT scans/MRI and chromosome/genetics tests were done but the results kept on returning back normal. Donovan was finally diagnosed with severe autism and profound disability. Profound is the most severe condition that one can be diagnosed with. Donovan was never diagnosed with a medical explanation for his condition. He attended Marietjie van Niekerk School in Secunda and at the age of 7 he started at Estralita in Lydenburg. He was shining at Estralita until at the age of 11 he started getting epileptic fits and his parents were advised that he needed medical attention. In 2008
Donovan was admitted into Woodside Sanctuary. Donovan almost lost his place at Woodside Sanctuary due to unforeseen financial difficulties, but before things got too bad there was a golf day organised at Walker Park Golf Course and enough money was collected to keep him at Woodside Sanctuary! His mother, Louise Rodway, was blown away by the help she received from the community and said the following: “I am truly blessed with people that opened their hearts to us on the golf day. I am in a position now to keep him there a little longer. Sadly, it is the only home that Donovan knows and he is happy there. I cannot face to make that change and to find something cheaper than Woodside that will give my son the same care and love is almost impossible.” – Ané Prinsloo Source: https://www. appliedbehavioranalysisprograms. com/faq/what-are-the-three-types-ofautism-spectrum-disorders/
Left to right: Donovan Bender still enjoys life despite his life changing diagnosis with severe autism and profound disability.

SERVICES Water is a precious commodity for GMM residents TO ADVERTISE CALL: 017 631 1903 • 017 631 1845
Bethal’s water situation has the residents boiling. Bethal’s water has effectively dried up and residents questions to the municipality are answered with a number of different answers. It ranges from “it’s filling up” to “Rand Water is pumping at 100%” and “Water will be opened after the reservoir level is enough for distribution.” To highlight the problem, even more, residents of Eendracht and Kinross are also complaining about not having water. The municipality owes Rand Water (RW) over R130 million and entered into negotiations with Rand Water to repay this debt. This is over
and above the R858 million that the municipality owes Eskom. The Executive Mayor, Thandi Nxgonono, has indicated that the terms of Rand Water for repayment of GMM’s outstanding debt were not acceptable to the municipality and that GMM could not keep to that conditions. Rand Water is continuing to throttle the water supply and rumours are that they are at 40% less supply than normal. This will surely have an impact on water supply in GMM! Water tankers have been deployed to supply water but residents complain that the water tankers do not stop at the water points. A resident even
supplied a video of a water tanker dumping water but it refused to stop at residents to supply them with water. Pumps at the pump stations are in a very poor condition and when a video of the broken pumps were posted GMM quickly switched on one pump to show that it is working. The Bulletin visited the reservoirs and found pumps and cables missing. The infrastructure is in a very poor state.Kinross residents have also complained about not receiving water. It would appear that the strained relationship between Rand Water and GMM is having an adverse impact on the residents of Eendracht, Kinross and Bethal.
