Sasol’s R5.5-billion Shondoni Colliery Inauguration Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin For the latest in breaking news go to www.thebulletin. co.za

Sasol’s R14 billion mine replacement programme injects new life into Sasol’s ageing coal mines in the Secunda areas. Meaning “a place of wealth in TshiVenda”, Shondoni is one of the most modern mining operations of its kind in South Africa and the latest in the mine replacement programme. The official Shondoni Colliery inauguration took place on 5 July 2018 and replaces Sasol mining’s Middelbult Colliery, which has reached the end of its lifespan. “Commencing some six years ago, our mine replacement programme led to the establishment of three new worldscale coal mines, namely Thubelisha, Impumelelo, and Shondoni,” said Bongani Nqwababa Sasol’s Joint President and CEO, “This programme, which is nearing completion, has secured coal supply to our Secunda Synfuels Operations up to at least 2050, while sustaining some 4000 direct jobs. These large projects were executed within budget and without any interruption in coal supply to our downstream operations.” “To many South Africans, Sasol is seen as a petrochemicals company. While this is a core part of our identity, it overlooks the fact that we are also a significant player in the mining industry,” said Nqwababa, “We are one of the largest underground coal complexes in the world and the third largest producer of coal in South Africa. We produce over 40 million tons of coal annually. Of this, more than 90% is beneficiated for the production of our high-quality fuels and chemicals, while the rest is exported.” “Our mining strategy is premised on remaining the leader in safe and low-cost underground coal mining,” Nqwababa further said,” We can only

run a successful mining business if we do so safely. Safety is an overarching concern across our entire business and is a core value for Sasol. In the financial year 2018, Sasol, unfortunately, recorded four tragic fatalities. Three of these were in our mining operations. We are deeply disheartened and utterly disappointed by these losses. On 25 January 2018, we shut down all our mining operations in order to take stock, reflect and map a safer future. Sasol has redoubled their efforts to proactively eliminate fatalities and high severity incidents in their operations. In his speech, Nqwababa said that while Sasol is a global company, they remain proud of their home market and their commitment to South Africa has never wavered In the financial year 2017, Sasol invested R115 billion in their South African operations. This includes R1.6 billion invested in skills and socioeconomic development programmes globally, 80% of which was in South Africa. On capital spent specifically, over the past five years, Sasol has invested more than R94 billion in South Africa. Sasol also remains a leading taxpayer, contributing at least R35 billion annually to the fiscus. “We are also investing more in the development of highly skilled and passionate individuals. To this end, Sasol, at any given time has about 1300 artisans in training. This is well above our own needs,” said Nqwababa, “We have committed to training at least 1000 artisans over the next four years in support of the YES (Youth Employment Service) programme. In fact, we will be absorbing the first intake of these young people at our Secunda and Sasolburg operations before the end of this year. In his opening remarks Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe said that to many the event was just the opening of a mine, but to him, this is a South African company investing in increasing the productive capacity of the country and the coal mining industry of South Africa. “That is the significance of this mine. “ “South African mines that are on care and maintenance are bad for the economy and the issue is being raised with the Minerals Council,” Mantashe said on Thursday. “The Department of Minerals and Energy has been to 11 mining areas to obtain feedback on the Mining Charter.” The government published the latest draft of the Mining Charter on June 15 after months of negotiations with companies, labour unions, and

communities. The set of rules is aimed at redistributing the country’s mineral wealth more equally among South Africans to make up for racial discrimination during apartheid. Mantashe defended various aspects of the draft charter, including its proposed 30% black shareholding in companies that would provide 14% equity to entrepreneurs and a 10% free carry for communities and workers. “Transformation is not a compliance issue. Transformation is a business imperative,” Mantashe said. “The department felt a 30% empowerment shareholding was important, Mantashe said. “The entrepreneur portion deliberately targeted black capitalists and those who already operated businesses.” Included in the draft mining charter remains the principle of once empowered, always empowered, in terms of which companies that had previously achieved the target of 26% black ownership would be recognised for it, even if the shareholding was subsequently watered down. He said, however, that where empowerment partners had been elbowed out, the business could not be considered empowered. Modern in many respects, distinguishing Shondoni from the rest of Sasol’s other five collieries is the use of renewable energy, which includes the use of solar geysers to heat pumps. The mine also holds the record of having the longest single flight conveyor without an intermediate booster drive in Africa, at 21km. Over the next 30 years, it is expected to deliver between 8 and 9 MT of coal per annum and currently employs about 1 200 people. The winder house was constructed on the surface and lifted with one lift into position which resulted in a more cost-effective and safer methodology. Weighing 291 tonnes, the winder house was moved horizontally over a distance of 58m and lifted 30m high. Large steel structures for the material handling system were assembled in modules on the surface and were then lifted in position, reducing the exposure of people working at heights. The mine is served by a 150m deep, 11,7m diameter man/material shaft with a 65ton payload capacity, a 120m deep, 9m diameter ventilation shaft and a 6 x 3m incline shaft which accommodates an incline conveyor. During construction of the mine, more than 2,9 million cubic meters of earth were moved and over 50 000 cubic meters of concrete placed.

Crime snippets Armed house robbery in Secunda On Thursday 5 July, at about 13:00, a house robbery took place in Mariski Street in Secunda. It is alleged that a 26 year old woman was sitting and watching TV when she heard her front door being broken. Two men, both armed with firearms, entered the home. The transport they used to flee the scene is not yet known. No arrests have been made.

Duo arrested for possession of dagga On Wednesday 4 July, at about 21h30, members from Secunda

Flying Squad arrested two men for possession of dagga. This came after the police spotted a blue Nissan Sentra on the N17 between Bethal and Trichardt while conducting stop and searches with the aim of preventing transportation of illegal goods or substances. Members instructed the driver to pull off the road and approached him for the purpose of conducting a search. During the search, members found nine wrapped bags of compressed dagga at the back of the vehicle. The driver and the passenger were arrested for possession of dagga. The dagga was then weighed in their presence and totalled to a weight of 27.5kg with the street value of forty thousand Rands. Both suspects, Thulani Mabuza (40) and Sikhanyiso Mabuza (26) were detained at Bethal SAPS cells and the vehicle was also seized. They appeared at Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 5 July and the case was rolled over to Friday 6 July for an attorney; both accused remained in custody.

Bethal House Robbery On Wednesday 4 July, at about 15:45, police received a complaint about a

house robbery that occurred in Naudé Street in Bethal. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man lying on the floor, bleeding. He allegedly informed the police that two men armed with firearms had entered his home while he was with his brother and demanded money from them. The victim was then shot in his thigh and sustained injuries. He was taken to Bethal hospital for medical assistance. The suspects allegedly left the house with R6000 and a cell phone valued at R600. “A second count of attempted murder was added in the docket.” said Constable Thomas Mogadime, the communications officer at Bethal SAPS. One suspect was arrested and will appear at Bethal Magistrate’s court facing charges of attempted murder and house robbery.

A truck carrying pallets overturned this Monday morning at the R580 (Delmas) and Evander/ Trichardt road junction. It would appear that the driver struggled to negotiate the slipway and lost control as he tried to turn. The truck obstructed one lane of traffic in the intersection direction Secunda. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.

Three arrested for possession of suspected nyaope Three men, aged 26, 31 and 43, were arrested by police from the Crime Prevention members at Bethal SAPS for possession of a substance suspected to be nyaope. This happened over the weekend while members were performing their crime prevention duties in the vicinity of Bethal CBD. In my tyd (en nou klink ek soos ‘n ou man) was daar egter een struikelblokkie voordat jy die Kerk kon gaan tref: twee jaar diensplig.

Go see Chaplain Britz.” Hy is my regterhand tydens die eerste kapelaansperiode, waar maklik 1000 troepe teenwoordig is. Wanneer ‘n klomp troepe vir basiese opleiding in ‘n kamp ingebondel word, kry jy alle tipes mense. Sommige is uitsmyters in ‘n bordeel in Boksburg, andere weer het ‘n doktorsgraad in kernfisika. So die konflikpotensiaal is hoog. Tydens ‘n driemaandekamp iewers in die bos was daar een man wat by voorbaat geëien was as potensiële probleem.

Escort XR3. Punt. Sy uitstaande kenmerk was sy reusagtige snor. En alles is in rep en roer. Operasie VIP skop in volle erns af. “You got problems,” onthou ek my kollega se woorde.

Real Players Creating Real People Real Players is a non-profit organisation which is aimed at the youth community. Real Players strive to actively involve kids and adults to engage in social sporting events and life skills activities. These events are designed to break the trend towards technologybased upbringing and for all ages to participate in the events. Some of the activities included are soccer, tug of war, chess, agricultural, scouts, aftercare, golf etc. Stage one of the community project is completed.. The children are coached by the Real Players coaches. Transvaal Training, Secunda Branch, sponsored the 1st aid training for the coaches to enable them to provide medical support next to the field. Coaching and home events will be hosted on the C field which is sponsored by Hoërskool Oosterland. Stage two will need a lot of community input and Real Players are appealing to the community to assist in the project. Grass cutting and landscaping is needed. Containers are needed for future classrooms/ablution blocks. Old palisade or concrete slab fencing are welcome and of course manpower to aid the installation. Field marking paint and fixed sporting equipment e.g. goal posts, nets, met résistance equipment must be

ADHD Africa is on its way While Govan Mbeki is sparsely dotted with schools for students with special needs, the emergence of one that places emphasis on the creative needs of these learners is almost unheard of. Picture this: a classroom with bouncy balls for chairs, desks with pedals that mimic bicycles, a singing teacher in front of the board, and perhaps a sustainable vegetable garden on the playground. These are some of the innovations that make up the vision for what may one day be called ADHD Africa. The school is the progressive idea of Henning Botha, henceforth the founder. During a quick tour of the premises, Mr Botha showed the Bulletin the ins and outs of the future school. It was clear in the way that he spoke that this was a passion project, and his face lit up with every detail of it. The school will cater for students with special needs and in particular, those with ADHD and dyslexia. “We’re hoping to have small, intimate classes, which are better for learning and giving each student the individual attention they deserve,” Mr Botha explained. Understanding that students with ADHD tend to be hyperactive, Mr Botha seeks to create a learning environment that puts that hyperactivity to use instead of suppressing it. “I want to use the arts as a learning tool,” he said. Having

obtained a BA degree in drama, artistic activity is second nature to Mr Botha. “We’ll also be implementing technology in the classroom, as we believe that this can add so much value to the experience of learning.” Mr Botha seeks to open the school in the coming year. What’s encouraging about his work is his knowledge and experience. He has taken the time to research and understand the differences between students with ADHD and dyslexia and those without. As such, the school doesn’t seek to impose traditional teaching and learning techniques on learners with special needs. “The emphasis is on art, we want to use colour, music, dance and drama to teach our kids,” Mr Botha said. The initiative is heart-warming, to say the least. A conversation with Mr Botha is one that is filled with animation and a visible love for catering to the needs of special students. Although the building is still in progress, it is not doubtful that ADHD Africa could be a screaming success. With mainstream education oblivious of the very specific requirements of those with ADHD or dyslexia, it is refreshing to hear of an institution geared towards the inclusion of the marginalised. We look forward to the school’s opening!

eventually be self-sustainable and to run a sponsorship programme for the less fortunate to be able to participate. Upon completing stage 2, a safe and secure playing field venue will be

established where Real People can be created by Real Players. Real Players extends their gratitude towards the Bulletin in getting this project off the ground.

Powerful portraits need to feel appreciated and beautiful again. So this series is about feeling like “a million bucks”. Initially, Powerful Portraits was an initiative for the month of June, but as Zelda got more and more enquiries about it, it became clear that an extension was in order. Gleaming with excitement, Zelda told the Bulletin that she had not expected Powerful Portraits to go as far as they have. The series has even drawn the attention of clients outside of Secunda. The preoccupied nature of motherhood means that sometime, women forget about their beauty. Between taking the kids to school and preparing meals for the family, feeling beautiful can often get thrown out the window! And even for women who aren’t mothers, the business of everyday life can so quickly overshadow one’s confidence. That’s why Powerful Portraits, which portrays women as both beautiful and strong, is an essential project.

As a matriculant at Hoërskool Evander, Zelda has bagged herself evening wear, shoes and accessories from Glamorous Couture. Her makeup for the night will be done by Saleha Bhayat Mota of Beautified Laser and Make-up. Mohammed Cassim of Alan’s Auto will provide a chauffeur that will ensure Zelda will travel to her farewell in style and luxury, while Naeera Cassim Photography will capture the moments. “It means so much to me,” Zelda said. “At first I was in disbelief. I could not believe that I’ve won a competition. It only started to become a reality once I spoke to Fatima over the phone. I am so excited as I wait for my dress!” Congratulations, Zelda! The women who got their photos taken freaked out. They often came in anxious and nervous but when they left, the confidence was so visible,” Zelda said. offers just that - a comprehensive solution from start to finish. Johann Pieterse, Business Manager for Manufacturing Industries at Afrox, says the Integrated Customer Application Solutions process always starts with a complex customer application challenge. Afrox will propose a partnership to develop a joint solution with the customer and agree a way forward that will maximise value for the customer and their end user. Pieterse continues that the proposal is followed by an extensive survey of the customer’s application, including current processes and practices. It is imperative to understand the customer’s business and their inherent challenges in terms of quality, productivity, costs and safety. “Once we understand the challenges, the next step is to create an effective solution,” says Pieterse. Firstly, the different welding processes are carefully considered and the best fit for the application is established. The selection of high quality Afrox gases, welding consumables and equipment are packaged to support the selected process. Afrox value-added services ensure that an optimised welding procedure is developed for each application and that staff are trained and qualified for successful implementation. This is done in line with Quality Management System, EN ISO 3834, as a guideline. After customer sign-off, the solution

is implemented on-site step by step. Qualified Afrox technical representatives oversee the execution as well as ensure supply of the correct welding consumables to support the process. Accurate implementation of the solution guarantees one or more of the following for customers: increased productivity, lower production cost, and improved quality, all hinging on a safe working environment. Afrox also undertakes any necessary upskilling or training of staff to optimise the new solution if required. The training and optimisation is underpinned by a range of safety and welding training courses, designed and developed to meet complex industry requirements. Once fully operational, Afrox provides ongoing support and maintenance to the project as well as offering equipment, gases and related consumable packages to ensure the proposed saving and increased productivity and quality promises are met. “As sub-Saharan Africa’s leading supplier of gas, welding equipment and consumables, Afrox is the only company extending this 360-degree capability to customers across South Africa, identifying opportunities to assist customers by implementing complete solutions, and providing full back-up and support,” concludes Pieterse.

This year, the event was introduced as eKasi Pageants, which meant that it was now accommodating different age groups, not just teenagers. Thus, this year introduced two new categories of pageantry: Queen Ambassador and Junior Ambassador. “Miss Teen eKasi started three years ago when I saw a need to accommodate all the models who were rejected by modelling agencies,” said Thando Kobese, the founder. “Normally, most modelling agencies will be very specific about how they select their models; they don’t want tattoos, body piercings, gold teeth, and they’re specific with the body weight and height.” Because of the requirements, a majority of models who come from townships are not accommodated due to their backgrounds. Miss Teen eKasi was born from the need to include these contenders. Miss Teen Ekasi ambassador focuses on confidence, public speaking, and community involvement. “We do not select our ambassadors according to their background or area where they come from. The image and beauty

does not matter as long as one can enhance and embrace their township,” Kobese explained. This season gave participants three tasks. They had to approach a sponsor to contribute to the pageant, sell VIP tickets to their family members and sell general tickets to their friends. “The idea was to teach the contestants on how to deal with disappointment and rejection, as well as motivating family members to be involved in their children’s development,” Kobese said. This year, Sinenhlanhla Skhosana won the title of Miss Teen, Siphosendumiso Masango was crowned the first princess and Reabetswe Komape was the second princess. Lungile Gulube was crowned Miss Plus Teen and Mbalenhle Mthombeni and Betty Ndlovu were the first and second Plus Teens respectively. In the male categories, Banele Mashaba won The Hunk title, and Karabo Khoza and Fezile Ndlovu took the titles of first and second prince respectively. The Queen Ambassador title went to Nomfundo Mthethwa, while the Junior Ambassador title was snatched by Natasha Mashaba. Nobuhle Mthethwa was Miss Congeniality and Thando Radebe was Miss Photogenic.

Photographers learn about Audio Visuals The Sasol Highveld Photography club had a very exciting photo club evening on the 6th July with 55 entries and 23 members in attendance. Anne D’Oliveira, President of PSSA and Amy Ansell, honorary member of Sasol Highveld Club were the judges for the evening. Anne shared two Audio Visuals (AV’s) with them with respective titles “Mysterious Venda” and “Tears from Heaven”. The first one took three years with the assistance of her business partner Frans Jesche to make and the second one six months. That again illustrated how much effort it takes to make a good AV. Anne agreed to host an AV workshop in Secunda. The following pointers can be followed for a good AV, -One must do research. -It is not just a slideshow with music. -Make a story out of the photographs. -Remember all stories have a start, middle and end. -Photos are not everything. -It doesn’t matter where one begins, photos, music or idea first. -Keep the audience captivated. -Sound, Photos and Recordings all play a vital role. -Voice over can be done but ensure that it is a good recording voice. -Making an AV can take a very long time. The winners for the evening were as follows

Junior category: Sussa Pelser with the title “Inner perspective” Senior category: James Harris with the

title “Living Dangerously” Set Subject: Leon Pelser with the title “Morning Frost”

Inner Perspective by Sussa Pelser

Living dangerously by James Harris

Morning Frost by Leon Pelser

The next meeting will be held on the 3rd of August and the set subject is “Street photography”.

Algoa National Rally done & dusted! The Algoa National Rally kicked off at a fast pace in Port Elizabeth on Friday 6 July. Hergen Fekken and Carl Peskin started in their brand-new Volkswagen Polo. Unfortunately, the Polo was lost on the second stage when a fire destroyed the vehicle. No one was hurt. At the end of the day (stage 5) the leaderboard had Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy-Lyle leading with Leeke/Kohne taking up second place. Local team Potgieter/Swartz ended the day in third. The team of Coertse/Godrich were fourth. Greg Godrich recently moved to Secunda and is now a local lad. 4 Classes competed in the event namely the R2N, Classic, Open and S1. A total of 41 teams entered the event. A few women also participated in the rally either as drivers or navigators. At least one all-female team participated in the rally. Day two saw everybody ready to go after spending the night fixing all the small problems that crept in on day one. The first three stages on day two 6,7 & 8) saw changes in the leaderboard with Potgieter/Swartz moving up into second, pushing Leeke/Kohne into third. Coertse/Godrich slipped down into fifth allowing the team of Van Wyk/ White to move up into fourth. The stages were very dusty and made for good spectator viewing. The leaderboard did not change again and Guy Botterill/Simon Vacy-Lyle took

Potgieter/Swartz honours on the podium. Potgieter/ Swartz took second place with Leeke/ Kohne ending in third place for the national rally. Algoa Rally Club hosted the event and did a wonderful job. The next rally is on the 17th and 18th August in Bronkhorstspruit. The Secunda rally will take place on the 28th & 29th September.

Sasol Digi Mag demolished Witbank

The cold weather may have kept spectators away from the field but on the field, it was all systems go! Sasol Digi Mag (Sasol) played against Witbank Rugby club (Witbank) on Saturday 7 July. It was quite a one-sided affair as Sasol dominated in all aspects of the game. Sasol scored 10 tries against the 2 of the visiting team. The final score was

74-12. Sasol managed 7 conversions and Witbank 1. The game was plagued by inconsistent ball skills and sloppy defence at times, only to make way for periods of brilliance. The bizarre decision to let the teams play on alternate weekends is taking its toll. It is clear that it affects the performance of all the teams. Players

struggle to practice and to stay focused. There are two games left before the quarter-finals and then a long layoff time before the finals. Sasol has enough points to finish at the top of the log. On consistency alone, they should progress to the club championships when they will be playing in the finals on the 8th of

September. Saturday’s game saw a number of regular players receiving a break and younger players given starting time. It was quite clear that Witbank did not have the scrumming power to stop Sasol putting them on the back foot at every scrum. Pressure was also put on the Witbank scrumhalf resulting in bad balls. The backline was under constant pressure from Sasol. The biggest frustration would be the “kick-offs” of Sasol. They received the ball 11 times from a kick-off (10 tries and one normal kick-off) and managed to bungle most of them. Lineouts were under control as well as the rest of the game although it was a very sloppy game. Thought should be given to the fact that the first real opposition that Sasol will encounter, will most probably only be when they play in the club championships. It may be to their detriment that there was so little strong opposition during the season, but the main determining factor will be how the team handle the lack of continual games and practices. Let us hope that the determination and discipline that is so prevalent in the Sasol Digi Mag team will realign the team and ensure success in this year’s Mpumalanga final and subsequent club competition.
