Solidarity members supporting the strike that was held on Thursday, 6 September.
Solidarity on action plan On Thursday thousands of Sasol employees in Secunda went on strike and made their voices heard in protest against Sasol’s Khanyisa share scheme that excludes white workers simply because of their race. Preparations started very early on Thursday morning. When the Bulletin arrived at 05H04 the area was a hive of activity. Banners were being placed along the road, Gazebos were being erected and barrier tape strung. There was orange everywhere. 3500 caps were distributed during the morning but not everybody received one as the number of protestors were far more than caps available. The sea of orange steadily grew as the solidarity participant numbers swelled. “Some media mistakenly reported that this was a white worker strike but it is a strike against what is wrong and what is right,” said Solidarity Chief Executive Dirk Hermann in an early morning interview with the Bulletin, “Sasol has moved from including white workers to one that excludes white workers.” According to Hermann, these workers made their voices heard today by taking a stand. “What Sasol is doing is unfair to workers who helped build
the company and who have been loyal and faithful workers throughout the years. Today, thousands of workers taking part in this strike said: Enough is enough,” Hermann said. According to Hermann, the community also turned up in large numbers and joined the strikers in order to show their support for the workers and to add their voices to the protest action. “Workers have reason to be angry for being excluded by Sasol because of a principle exclusively based on race and they are prepared to make their voices heard for what they believe is right and fair,” Hermann said. “The fact that the community and everyone affected by this unfair situation is taking a stand for what they believe is right, is incredibly encouraging. It shows that this is an involved community prepared to take a stand as well. Their actions encourage and energise us,” Hermann said. Some of the Solidarity members’ black co-workers chose to show their support and attended the strike. Solidarity member Thabo Lucas Lekoloane said the following: “a piano
has both black and white keys, you need both to have good harmony. If you only play one then the music will be false.” International news agencies Al Jazeera and the BBC has also picked up on the exclusion of white workers based on their race and have reported on the situation on their worldwide platforms. Solidarity members handed 350 memorandums on Wednesday 5 September, to companies across the country in a show of support of the Sasol workers. “Sasol let the transformation pendulum swing too far. Sasol’s policy has developed into one of unadulterated racial exclusion. The Sasol employees’ actions are making history. They will once again bring a balance to the transformation debate in South Africa,” Hermann said. Friday 7 September saw a new turn of events in Solidarity’s strike at Sasol when the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) addressed a letter to Solidarity and Sasol in which it offers its assistance to defuse Solidarity’s strike at Sasol. This step is taken in terms of section 150 of the Labour Relations Act. Solidarity
has since formally informed the CCMA that the trade union would participate in the process. This step comes after thousands of workers participated in a protest march on Thursday, 6 September, outside Sasol-Secunda as part of full-scale strike action. In its letter, the CCMA indicated that it would appoint a special commissioner to assist the parties. The CCMA also referred to its excellent track record in resolving disputes by means of the section 150 process. According to Hermann, the CCMA’s request comes as a surprise but is welcomed. “A dispute can only be resolved around the negotiating table. The parties must find a solution for the sake of everyone in South Africa and we welcome the CCMA’s endeavours to become involved in finding a solution. In the past, we have had positive experiences with similar processes at the CCMA. The CCMA has also confirmed telephonically that at least one senior commissioner, but probably two, would be assigned to the process. Continued to page 3

Dog poisoning on the increase “Dogs do speak but only to those who know how to listen to them.” Orhan Pamuk On 8 September Mrs Shahistha Krishnapersadh, better known as Shy, and her family were traumatised by their dog being poisoned. When Shy called her dogs to come for dinner at approximately 21:30 (two Rottweilers), only one of them came. (The two Rottweilers only eat homemade food.) Immediately she knew something was wrong and her husband, Mr. Vinay Krishnapersadh, went out to look for their other dog. Vinay was confronted with a shocking sight. Jaanu, the poisoned Rottweiler, came when called, but was extremely weak, drank a little bit of water and started vomiting profusely. Immediately Shy jumped into action and phoned Roelof Gouws from Secunda 911. Within five minutes the family heard tyres screeching outside their home in Extension 22. She opened the gate and in streamed a river of emergency response personnel. The family looked on in shock and relief as Mr. Shayne van der Heever, from Langamed, sprang into action and inserted an intravenous drip of Atropine. Shy said that Shayne didn’t even care that he was sitting in Jaanu’s vomit and Shayne even escorted them to Dr. Talitha Olivier’s veterinary practice, Eendedam Dierekliniek, to ensure the safe passage of the family and Jaanu. All of this happened within half an hour of the initial call! Monteviro Environmental services cleaned up the family’s yard to ensure no poison was left behind. When the family arrived home SSS organised a patrol vehicle to drive around the neighbourhood to ensure not only the families were safe, but also the dogs in the neighbourhood. The next morning Shy was grateful when Roelof arrived at their home at 07:00 to follow up and ensure the family was ok.
“Our everyday heroes are the people like Roelof Gouws and his team at Secunda 911, Shayne van der Heever and his 12-year-old son, Bryan, Vince Taylor the owner of SSS, Monteviro Environmental Services who helped with the numbers and Dr. Talitha Olivier, the vet currently looking after Jaanu. Thank you from our side that Jaanu is one of the few dogs who survived dog poisoning. If it wasn’t for the quick reaction of everyone involved Jaanu would definitely not have survived. Thank you to our heroes!” said Shy and her family. The Bulletin is glad to report that Jaanu is at home and is on his road to recovery. Good luck Jaanu! The Bulletin also spoke to Dr. Melinda from Evander Animal Clinic and no dog poisoning cases have been reported as yet. Dr. Melinda encourages people to keep the activated charcoal mixture at home in case their dogs get poisoned. The activated charcoal mixture is available at the Eendedam Dierekliniek as well as the Evander Animal Clinic.
Crime snippets Rapist’s duo sentenced Last week, Secunda Regional Court convicted and sentenced Thulani Khumalo (21) and Morena Khaba (21) from Standerton for various sentences on multiple counts of rapes, kidnapping and assault with grievous bodily harm. The accused person’s victims were between the ages of 14 -15 years and were residing in the same area. The court heard the accused would kidnap their victims to keep them in a certain house for days, forced them to lie down and take turns in raping them. The most remarkable incident happened in January 2013 where they kidnapped the first complainant together with her friend, who is the second complainant in the matter, kept them and took turns raping them. Accused number two was a suspect in other cases and arrested while he was in the company of the third complainant. This was after the matter was reported to the police by one of the neighbours. Morena Khaba was further charged with three further counts of rape, assault with grievous bodily harm and kidnapping of the third complainant that took place on 21 January 2013 to 22 January 2013 and was arrested. Both accused pleaded not guilty to

Breathing 3. Orally Source: www.animalwised.com What Are the Symptoms of Dog Poisoning? If you suspect that your dog has been poisoned, look for any of the following symptoms: • Cardiac symptoms such as irregular heartbeat • Loss of blood (bruising, blood in stool, nosebleeds, anaemia) • Seizures and other neurological disorders • Diarrhoea • Vomiting • Inability to urinate • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Difficulty breathing • Loss of balance • Skin rash • Swelling of tongue • Muscle rigidity and tremor If your dog is suffering from one or more of the above symptoms, get help immediately. - Ané Prinsloo
the charges, however, the Regional Court Prosecutor Phumzile Nkosi, led testimonies of the three traumatised victims who told the court how the rape incidents happened, evidence of witnesses and medical evidence regarding two of the victims. The Prosecutor further led DNA evidence which linked accused number two with complainant number three in the matter. Victim impact statements were also submitted. During sentencing, the court found no substantial and compelling circumstances to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence. Both accused were found guilty as charged. Accused number one was facing 11 counts of rape and 1 count of kidnapping and was sentenced to 15 years each per count of rape and 5 years for kidnapping. The sentence in count number 2 will run concurrently with the sentence in count 1 which means Khumalo will serve 20 years direct imprisonment. Accused number two was facing 14 counts of rape, 2 counts of kidnapping and 1 count of assault with grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to life imprisonment per count of rape (14 Life sentences), 5 years each for each count of kidnapping and 1 year for assault as he was convicted on assault, not assault with grievious bodily harm. The presiding officer ordered the sentence in count 2 and 3 to run concurrent with the sentence in count 1 effectively Morena Khaba will serve 1 life imprisonment The NPA welcomes the sentence with the hope that it will serve as a deterrent to those who commit similar crimes.

Sasol Limited buys back shares from Sasol Inzalo Johannesburg, South Africa - Sasol Limited has repurchased 16,1 million Sasol preferred ordinary shares from Sasol Inzalo Public Funding (Pty) Ltd (FundCo) on Friday 7 September at the 30 day volume weighted average share price (VWAP) as at 6 September 2018 of R542,11. Friday also marked the end of the empowerment period for Sasol Inzalo Public. On 18 September 2018, the Sasol Inzalo Public shares will be From page 1
delisted, which is the earliest possible date after finalising the Sasol Inzalo transaction. Sasol Inzalo Public will make a further announcement in this regard on Tuesday, 11 September 2018. “When Sasol Inzalo was created in 2008, the objective was to provide black South Africans with the opportunity to own a portion of Sasol. Sasol Inzalo was a landmark transaction and we learnt many lessons along the
way,” said Bongani Nqwababa, Joint President and Chief Executive Officer of Sasol Limited. “The unwind of Sasol Inzalo Public closes a significant chapter on our transformation story, but we have moved onto the next chapter. We have taken the lessons learned from Sasol Inzalo and are building on our transformation story,” said Stephen Cornell, Joint President and Chief Executive Officer of Sasol Limited.
Solidarity on action plan
Transformation disputes where race plays a major role are per definition divisive and detrimental to South Africa if prolonged for too long. If Sasol and Solidarity can find a solution to the dispute, it will not only be good for Sasol; it will also be a positive example for South Africa. However, we have not yet received any indication whether Sasol will participate in the process,” Hermann said. Solidarity launched a go-slow strike at Sasol on Monday because of the company’s employee share scheme, Khanyisa, that excludes white employees. It is the first time in South Africa’s history that white employees go on strike because of racial exclusion. Meanwhile, Solidarity is continuing with its strike. The trade union has plans in place for at least three weeks of strike action and they plan to file a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission early next week about Sasol’s exclusion based on race. Solidarity will also approach the Labour Court in Johannesburg this week to obtain permission for all its members across South Africa to go on strike in solidarity with the Sasol members. The court application follows after Nedlac’s (National Economic Development and Labour Council - South Africa) rejection of Solidarity’s earlier application.
Sasol responded with their own press release: On Thursday 6 September, Solidarity handed over another memorandum to members of Sasol’s management in Secunda, where several hundred members gathered outside our Secunda Operations. With today’s demonstration there was a temporary decrease in attendance by Solidarity members at our Secunda Operations. As a result, some of today’s planned activities were impacted. However, as previously stated, our contingency measures remain in place to minimise impact on our operations. Our priority is ensuring that all personnel are engaged to ensure safe and ongoing operations. As previously stated, parts of our Secunda and Sasolburg Operations are busy with planned maintenance shutdowns and activities in this respect continue. Planning for these shutdowns is an ongoing annual process. Our operations that are not part of the annual maintenance shutdown are also continuing as planned. We continue to monitor the situation. Sasol remains committed to open and honest engagement with all our trade union partners and our employees. For more go to the Bulletin’s web page www.thebulletin.co.za

Ons eet net so lekker by spesiale geleenthede.
Waar ‘n ontsagwekkende toneel my begroet.
Soos mens ‘n olifant eet.

The Flooze in action
Cuppa for Cansa Three years ago, a group of women decided they are going to host a Cuppa. It started with about 70 women and now there is a whole hall at Evander Club full of women and a few men. Every year a new theme is chosen and this year it was decided on: “Seisoene van Hoop”. With Luan de Beer as MC and entertaining the guests with his voice and saxophone, the morning started with a roar of excitement. Pastor Werner Joubert, Shofar Christian Church and Survivor contestant spoke to the crowd about survival and how we all support each other within a community. Die Flooze/Sorina Erasmus was the guest speaker and artist. She entertained the crowd with singing and of course her hilarious jokes. Except for the laughs that were shared with Pastor Werner and Die Flooze/Sorina Erasmus the messages both speakers shared were heartfelt and touching. The message that the crowd walked away with was that even when you are down and alone always stay hopeful which goes with this year’s theme: “Seisoene van Hoop.”

Mynland Potjiekos challenge with a twist This weekend on Saturday 15 September, there is a fundraiser and Potjiekos competition at Mynland featuring Vernon Barnard, from the Voice SA. The funds raised during this event will go towards the treatment of a little boy named Lian with a very rare disease.
Lian Niewoudt was born with a rare syndrome called TAR Syndrome. TAR Syndrome (thrombocytopenia with absent radius) is a rare genetic disorder that is characterised by the absence of the radius bone in the forearm and a dramatically reduced platelet count. When Lian was born, his parents didn’t
know anything about TAR Syndrome but they soon found out that it is more than just a genetic disorder. Lian’s immune system is none existing and he has had to have 8 platelet transplants when he was admitted to hospital after his 6-week check-up. After this, things took a turn for the worst and Lian was back in hospital. The doctors did all tests possible and finally the parents received word that Lian was born with a deficiency causing low Immunoglobin. Immunoglobin is the antibody that fights infections. Finally it explained why Lian was in and out of hospital. Lian needs to receive a Polygam every month. A Polgam is a medication used to boost the body’s natural defence system (immune system) to lower the risk of infection in persons with a weakened immune system. This medication is made from healthy human blood that has a high level of certain defensive substances (antibodies), which help fight infections. It is also used to increase the blood count (platelets) in persons with a certain blood disorder (idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura-ITP). Platelets are needed to stop bleeding and form blood clots. Reinette Gibson is in Oktober 2015 gekroon as Lady Gracious SuidAfrika 2015/16. Sy het in haar kroonjaar rehabilitasiesentrums besoek, as motiveringspreker by skole opgetree en was ook baie betrokke by CANSA.

Oosterland hosts Tattoo despite threatening rain Dark storm clouds loomed ominously just north of town when the Bulletin arrived at Oosterland’s Tattoo on Friday night. The afternoon saw rain threatening to disrupt the evening’s proceedings but as the evening drew on there was no more rain. Even the cold could not dampen the spirit at the school. The Bulletin was treated to an excellent
meal of Potjiekos and Malva pudding before the official start of the evening. The opening movement was quickly explained and rehearsed as the early rain made it impossible to practice it before. Springs Boys’ High participated in this year’s Tattoo again as the two schools have close ties with their bands. The evening was opened with the two bands marching from opposite sides of the parade ground and meeting in the
middle for a quick musical interlude. There were a few other performers such as a dance group and the Drum Majorettes from local primary schools that performed to the crowd’s delight. Some of the majorettes participating are as young as 4 years old! It was then time for the combined band to play. The bands formed one massive band and ended the performance with Amazing Grace. The sounds of the two bands playing together will

The two bands performed very well and the crowd enjoyed every minute of the performance. 5 Star Superspar sponsored a huge cake and everybody were invited to have some. Speed Rally at Umuzi Week of Festivals For two years in a row the Secunda Flying Club hosted Air Navigation Rallies. This year will be different and the club will be hosting a Speed Rally, the first of its kind! The Speed Rally is the brainchild of the Secunda Flying Club committee. All rallies are hosted by the South African Powered Flying Association (SAPFA), which is the governing body. The novel speed rally idea had to be approved by the SAPFA committee. SAPFA approved it on the premise that it has never been done before in the country and that it would be a perfect time to do a trial run for this format of the race. This novel competition will be the first of its kind and will be held on Saturday, 6 October at the Secunda airfield. For a speed rally, the pilot has to fly with a handicap speed. To determine the handicap, the pilot needs to fly with a test pilot in a square at full throttle: North, East, South and West. All pilots fly the same distance and
the same square. The handicap is calculated by taking the average speed the aircraft flies in this square and the result of each aircraft’s performance determines its starting time. Unlike other rallies, where the pilot and the navigator receive the map in advance, they will only receive the map 20 minutes prior to take-off! Along with the map, the pilot and the navigator will receive a photo of each turning point. There will also be a spot landing competition. Entry fee is R1200.00 per aircraft and all aircraft must do a test flight on 4 and 5 October. The race distance will be 120 nautical miles and the pilots will be racing against their own handicaps. As previously mentioned this is a trial run for the 2019 President’s Trophy Air Race. The event is open to spectators and there will also be entertainment for the kids, food and drink. The rally is also part of the Umuzi Week of Festivals. Don’t miss out on this first of its kind event! - Ané Prinsloo

Sun City Ladies Open Last year four ladies from Secunda were invited to the Sun City Ladies Tournament which is held every year in September. The format was a 4 Ball Alliance with two scores to count. The tournament was spread over two days and there were 88 participants. The first day was played at the prestigious Gary Player Course where the international Nedbank Golf Challenge is held annually. The team that played were Anli Prinsloo, Lucille Lyon, Wilma van Rensburg and Sandra Spies. On the first day the ladies walked 18 holes in scorching heat and had to contend
with blustery winds. The ladies were fortunate enough to use golf carts on the second day at the Lost City Course. It was a wonderful experience for the ladies as most of their golf is played in the Highveld area. Sadly, their battle with the newly implemented handicap system, challenging slopes and courses proved a little unsettling. However, they managed to submit an admirably handy score, but unfortunately it was not enough to be in the top 4. The team that won has won it twice in a row. Perhaps next year ladies! Above all, friendships were cemented and fun was had!
