Unconditional Love!
Unconditional love was the core message of Pastor Craven Engel when he delivered his sermon at the Secunda Reformed Church on Sunday. Pastor Engel and his team visited Secunda over the past weekend to bring awareness about the work done in the Cape flats areas of Cape Town. The areas are under tremendous pressure from gang violence, substance abuse and general moral decay. Craven speaks with a tremendous passion for his work, his people and the people he serves. Throughout the interview, he managed to bring the humorous side into this very tragic situation. The way that they interact with the gangs and their responses sometimes come through as funny but he stressed the very severity of the situation to the Bulletin. During his sermon, he spoke about “mirror neurons” and used a very
simple comparison. “People reflect on themselves and others through mirrors,” he said, “we stand up in the morning and the first mirror is your partner, then the bathroom mirror etc.” Then Craven said what the problem is with drugs. “Drugs switches off your mirror neurons and the drug user (or substance abuser) cannot see the pain that he or she is causing!” When asked by Doctor Anton Knoetze of the Secunda Reformed Church how to switch it on again Pastor Engel replied: “with unconditional love!” He went on to say that parents should also take responsibility for their children. “We can help with programs but the parents must take responsibility,” said Craven. One of the main reasons for inviting Craven and his team to come to Secunda is the steady increase in drugs and drug abuse. Secunda’s drug users have not resorted to the levels
of violence that is so prevalent in the Cape Flats area yet but as one of his support team said: “with drugs comes violence.” The Bulletin has reported on a number of drug cases, most recently the bag of cocaine found behind one of our primary schools. The courts have also seen a steady increase in the use of Naope, especially in the township areas. Dealers sometimes even include school children. Craven’s model is based on international standards and they benchmarked with Chicago. “Chicago is a small hellhole on its own,” he said. The problem with gangs and their related violence is that there is always the need to retaliate. And this retaliation is what brings all this sorrow. If someone is shot or stabbed there will always be problems with retaliation. And this is where Pastor Engel and his CeaseFire project is so very effective.
He and his team operate from the First Community Resource Centre, which houses counselling services, jobplacement services, a drug restoration centre and a safe house. The success of this program is based on the fact that the “interrupters”, as they are called, are all ex-drug users, gangsters and convicts. Craven introduces each member of the team to all the gangs and gets them to accept them as members of his team. “The gangs have a tremendous respect for faith-based ministries,” Craven said. They start with the following steps: Detect and interrupt conflicts: Interrupters respond immediately to a conflict to disrupt the conflict. If a shot is fired, they can pinpoint the location within seconds and respond to disrupt the conflict. The idea is to mediate ongoing conflicts, prevent gang retaliation and keep conflicts “cool”. Women & children take centre stage at Bethal SAPS The Bethal Police station had a unique week that brought together the celebration of women and the education of children. Learners from Sibonokuhle Pre-school, visited Bethal Police Station on 9 March 2018 as part of their educational and career tour. On arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the Social Crime and Communication officer, Constable Thomas Mogadime. They were given a tour of the police station, including seeing police vehicles as well as the cells where suspects are kept after being arrested. Child-like wonder filled their eyes as they witnessed the ordinary, daily operations of the police station. Having what he now considers a natural passion for interacting with children, Constable Mogadime also occupied the children with singing and dancing. “The passion of working with kids started while I was still at school and after school hours. Neighbours’ kids would come to me and ask me to assist them with their school work as well as reading and public speaking,” he said. When it comes to the safety of children, Const. Mogadime does not compromise. With his biggest goal as a law-enforcer being to ensure that children feel safe, he encourages children to report any form of crime or abuse to the police. “It is important that children interact with members of the SAPS as well as other role players in the law enforcement and emergency services sectors, simply so that they know where they can go in case of emergency,” he added. A message of protection and safety had also been aimed to a different audience on the day preceding this visit. Bethal SAPS Men for Change and Women’s Network celebrated
International Women’s Day on Thursday 8 March with officials from the Department of Correctional Services, GMM Traffic, Mpumalanga Traffic, Local Drug Action Committee, Department of Health, Department of Education, Fire and Rescue Department and SAPS members from other stations. International Women’s Day is a global
celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. As such, it was celebrated in the form of a round table discussion, where issues of gender-based violence, health and wellness, as well as spirituality were tackled. – Rorisang Rathebe

N17 claims life again! Saturday night saw the N17 closed for more than three hours as a result of an accident that occurred at approximately 19H45. The exact cause of the accident is still unknown. Initial reports indicate that a Nissan X-trail ploughed into an oncoming truck, causing the X-trail to spin off the road. A second vehicle followed the X-trail and was also damaged in the collision but it could not be determined what the second vehicle hit that caused all the damage to that car. The driver sustained slight injuries. Bystander’s stated that a fourth vehicle was also involved but managed to drive away. The truck was severely damaged but the driver was uninjured. The X-trail was damaged extensively and was barely recognisable. The driver of the X-trail sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was trapped beneath the vehicle. Emergency personnel struggled to
free the body but managed to do so at 22h30. The driver of the fourth vehicle could perhaps shed some light on the course of events and The Bulletin would like to appeal to anyone that could give more information to contact The Bulletin or Trichardt police at 017 638 0241.
Accident on Brendan/Osizweni crossing! A minibus taxi transporting school children overturned after colliding with a Ford Figo. Unconfirmed report indicates that the taxi’s indicator was on, indicating a left turn. The Figo then proceeded to cross and clipped the taxi causing it to lose control and overturn. 11 children were slightly injured and transported by #Langamed, #ER24 and Provincial EMS. #sectri and #cardoctor responded to the scene.

SANBS say thank you Beautiful flowers, colour changing led’s on the tables and red banners on the stage set the mood for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) controller function on Friday night. The night proved to be a hit with everyone that attended. Dieter Uken once again proved what difference a good master of ceremonies could be. Sister Sanet gave a presentation on the branches’ achievements of the year and Dot Prinsloo spoke about the blood products. Each controller received a small token of appreciation and Megchem

received the prise for blood drive of the year. Controllers are responsible for arranging the clinics and venues. The function was held at Graceland and as usual, it was a very grand affair. The food was excellent and everybody enjoyed themselves especially when Dieter started singing some “local is lekker” songs. Nearly everybody joined in the singing and dancing. Blood is such an important commodity and the controller does a tremendous job in helping SANBS achieve their blood targets. Thank you to everyone.

Identify and treat hi-risk individuals: Like a disease, violence has to be transferred from one carrier to another. Therefore, “high-risk individuals” are the gang members or “transporters” of crimes. CeaseFire uses Violence Interrupters (themselves former transporters) to identify and “quarantine” carriers before they contaminate others. Change social norms: The aim is to change the community perception by sensitising them to the fact that violence is not normal. For many Hanover Park residents fear has become a part of everyday life. The aim? To create a new norm where people can walk the streets without fear. This highly successful program has brought a lot of change in the lives of people in the Cape Flats. When asked
about the reduction in violence Craven responded that the decrease has been 43% according to their calculation but needs to be verified scientifically. “One death is a death too many,” said Craven. Their success rate in rehabilitating abusers is far higher than the norm throughout the country. One of the main stumbling blocks is funds. They have been funded for the past five years from the City of Cape town but it is not a certainty. Craven said that his interrupters are mostly volunteers at the moment as well as some of the other staff. His staff compliment is currently 32. Craven says “I can’t stop. As one of the gangsters said to me, I didn’t come into your life, you chose to come into my life. You have to help me!” Unconditional love makes you enter that gangster’s life. Unconditional Love!
Sprayathon at Kruinpark Kruinpark hosted a CANSA Sprayathon on Friday, 9 March. Kruinpark involved all their children and the school hall was buzzing with excitement. The CANSA mascot proved to be a hit with the children as their shrieks of laughter echoed through the hall and faces lit up when he came closer. It was controlled chaos as the children lined up for their turn to have their hair sprayed. Some children stared in awe at all that was happening around them. Mari-Anna Victor, Department head, told the Bulletin that they are extremely proud to host the Sprayathon. She also said that they hope to raise some funds for CANSA. The Bulletin conducted a short interview with Ms. Victor. It can be viewed on our Facebook page.

Gesinsrestaurant. Mooi woord. Gesin.
As jong hoërskoolseun was dit al verby my slaaptyd. En net nadat David gesê het: “And for the second week in the number one position, Elton John with Good Bye Yellow Brick Road”, het ek my draagbare kassetspeler se mikrofoon voor die hoëtroustel se luidspreker neergesit, en die “Aan/on” knoppie gedruk.
Dallas was natuurlik verbode.

Listeria causes hysteria A relatively recent listeria outbreak has had South Africa in the grips of panic. On 4 March 2018, Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health, revealed that the bacteria was linked to an Enterprise facility in Polokwane, Limpopo. Fingers were also pointed at Rainbow Chicken Limited. At present, all processed, ready-to-eat Enterprise meats seem to have been removed from all local stores (i.e in the TEKS area), and all customers have been urged to return these products for a full refund, with or without a till slip. To clear up misconceptions regarding the Rainbow Chicken products, widespread precaution entails the removal of cold meats that are eaten as is, as opposed to those that are meant to be cooked first, since listeria dies at high temperatures. On many levels, the onset of listeriosis is indicative of a disastrous failure at the very basic levels of food control and safety in South Africa. With over 180 deaths due to the illness,
recent events beg the question, “How did this happen?” The Food Control section of the Health Department identifies itself as being “responsible for ensuring the safety of food in South Africa”, while it is also the responsibility of individual food manufacturers to maintain the safety and quality of their products. It is difficult to understand then, with such pressing responsibility, how a potentially life-threatening bacterium could go undetected long enough to affect a reported 976 people (according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases). Assigning the function of food inspections to municipalities, as opposed to national government, has been recognised as one of the biggest mistakes of our Constitution. Motsoaledi believed it to be too heavy a job for municipalities, who are already weighed down by “basic services which they must provide, like refuse removal.” The listeria outbreak has proven, amongst other things,
that South Africans are able to maintain a spirit of lightheartedness, even in the midst of fatal circumstances. With social media being somewhat of a pivot for our modern society, the overwhelming spread of listeriosis has ushered in a new wave of humorous memes, tweets and banter. But the full scope of the eruption has left many South Africans poorly informed and unsure of what to do, so here are some key things you should know: 1.Listeriosis mainly affects the elderly, newborns, pregnant women, and those with impaired immune systems 2.It can easily be prevented by washing hands before and after handling food, cooking food thoroughly, and keeping foods at safe and appropriate temperatures 3.Its symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches and diarrhoea 4.It is treatable, so if you’re suspicious, see a doctor Rorisang Rathebe
Alexandra’s Travels... ...Milan is ugly
By Alexandra Wuzyk In Dombodosso, Italy, just across the border from Switzerland, I ask the couple I’m hitchhiking with to drop me off at the train station. I get into a carriage - dirt cheap - and cuddle with my backpack, cluck-a-la-clackclack cluck-a-la-clacklack. The short distance to Milano takes hours. I arrive as the sun sets. As always in a new city, I’m instantaneously lost. I circle an area of dirty old buildings around the station - obviously not the central station. I walk until I find a starbucks and dissolve onto the couch, stealing their wifi and a plug point. I look up a hostel address and some dingy buses get me there. I hit the buzzer and the door opens - Oh, no, that’s definitely a strip club - OH, the hostel is upstairs? Oh I see. Yes. Thank you. I talk to a rather angry old man at the desk. He’s skinny, with a caramel complexion, spectacles and cigarette between his lips. Apparently working 24 hour shifts - he has a bed behind the desk - littered with the filthy
debris that accumulates from eating, working and sleeping in one space. He moves with energetic, wide gestures, breaking into a litany about inconsiderate guests; how messy they are, don’t want to pay for the wash machine, how they come (like I just did) without a booking at all hours of the night. He barks out these reprimands in broken english, interspersed with rhythmic Italian muttering. The next morning an Irish girl from the hostel joins me in a walk around the neighbourhood. Its dingy, dirty, mostly comprised of old apartment buildings. We take the metro into the old city center where we things are more promising; there’s far more architectural interest here, but many buildings are under maintained, and weren’t that tastefully designed to start with. We walk into a wide plaza and gasp - because, the cathedral is absolutely magnificent. It’s a massive, jaw dropping structure covered from top to bottom in ornate, gothic, sculptural detail. I can easily believe that the Duomo took nearly six centuries to construct - and it’s now commemorated by crowds of selfie snapping tourists. We continue to the shopping district which is decidedly stylish. Wide cobblestone streets are lined by cafes with extravagant displays of gelato ice creams, golden plates and goldembossed cursive lettering. Big glass windows show the latest of Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, Prada, Versace and Ferraris and Bugattis line the streets. There are some cracks in the facade though - the crowd is touristy, americans with socks and sandals. I don’t see the level of taste
Notices at Pick ‘n’ Pay stores urged customers to return products implicated in the listeriosis outbreak.
and elegance you might expect from one of the fashion capitals of the world. I leave the hostel the next day in favour of a couchsurfing host; As always, an interesting surprise; he’s a refugee from Iran, studying architecture in Milan, fluent in Italian. His ideas are very open minded and western, but his cultural background is intensely different;and so the conversation flows freely. He has beautiful clean apartment, which he shares with a Chinese girl, and he has glorious airconditioning. I don’t bother exploring in the stuffy, humid, heat so I lie on the couch watching netflix all day - and, with all the recent discomforts, doing nothing like this feels like the height of luxury. We spend some time together in the evening - We get aperitivos - which is theoretically a cocktail and some light snacks - but they take the food here seriously; they offer a massive buffet of spectacularly delicious food; seafood, vegetable dishes, potatoes, salads, dishes I’ve never seen before and so I try to taste everything. I leave having had a bit more than a ‘light snack’ - everything is just so so so good. We go to a canal area and which is packed with people and light, creating a lively atmosphere in the evening. We drink in different
bars, slowly covering the length of the canal, and some time in the early morning we catch the tram back and sleep late into the next day - and I pack for my flight. I like Milan, because, while I don’t think it’s beautiful - except in one or two odd patches - it’s real. It’s a working italian city, with huge grey post-war apartment blocks, decrepit public transport, office blocks, warehouses, business centers. This is a place where normal people live, and work and make money - and the streets are dirty and the buildings are ugly, but its a city, not a decoration.

MFDW fashionably late Mpumalanga Fashion and Design Week (MFDW) finally arrived in true fashionista style: late, but fashionably so. The event was highlighted by a glamorous fashion show, held in eMbalenhle on 10 March 2018. The show was a production of AMMFI International, and sought to give the community of Mpumalanga the ‘feel’ of an internationally produced fashion week, while also opening up the industry to local models and designers. Samuel Marema, an organiser of the dazzling occasion, experienced the kind of satisfying exhaustion that can only be achieved by throwing oneself into the vortex of a passion project. “It was very tiring, as I haven’t slept this whole week, trying to put the final pieces of the event together,” he said. Marema had to juggle both the roles of event organiser and host, receiving international guests who were set to participate. Works by designers from Malawi, Swaziland and Botswana were showcased, and proceedings were covered by media from Zimbabwe and Botswana. The hard work proved to be worth it, however, when the show raked in a turnout that far exceeded expectations. “Seeing the smiles on our audience and models’ faces made all the
sleepless nights worth it,” Samuel said. After weeks of postponement and location changes, MFDW and AMMFI were able to put together an affair that wowed the masses. This year’s fashion show was the second annual MFDW event, which carried the ultimate goal of making high fashion accessible to the ordinary residents of Mpumalanga. “Local designers read about our event in the media and contacted us, after which they were screened according to our standards,” Marema said. “The international designers that we featured are those whom we’ve worked with in other projects”. The show also featured models who were recruited from an open audition, held in eMbalenhle on 3 February. “We chose to host the event in eMbalenhle because this is where I am from and we thought it would be fit to give back to the community and shine the spotlight on Secunda and eMbalenhle,” Marema added. The MFDW team plans to launch what they have called ‘MFDW: The Roadshow’ later on in the year. The mission will see them touring the Mpumalanga province over two years, showcasing what they do best: fashion. Apart from that, supporters can expect to witness the next annual MFDW in March of 2019. – Rorisang Rathebe

Breaking barriers for the blind We often take the little things for granted. Something as seemingly insignificant as opening our eyes at the dawn of a new day and seeing our surroundings can go unthought of. The convenient act of running our eyes over the words on a page like this one, comprehending what is being communicated to us, is an ability that we rarely pause to consider. Yet there are many who go about their lives without the sense of sight. Often, public institutions are not inclusive of the disabled. The relationship between libraries and the blind and/or visually impaired community is of particular interest. Within the TEKS area, the Secunda and eMbalenhle public libraries are leading the way in providing a more comprehensive service to this community. Members of Kuthala Association for the Blind were recently invited to eMbalenhle Library for training in the use of document readers and computers for the blind. The equipment was donated by the South African Library for the blind,
in association with Mzansi Libraries Online. Kuthala Association for the Blind was formed in 2012 by an initial four members. Presently, more than 50 members from Kinross, eMbalenhle and Leandra convene once a week to encourage one another, facilitate reading sessions and attend training programs. Thabiso Maila, a member of the association, expressed gratitude for the document reader and computer that were donated. Having attended Thibiloha School for the Deaf and Blind, as well as studying an IT course at Lead Change Developments (an IT training facility for the blind and people living with disabilities), Maila is in an ideal position to train members of his community. “I accepted my condition long ago, and that has made me able to make the best of life,” Maila
said. Taking charge of his own fate and maintaining a proactive attitude towards his own education has made Maila a proficient computer user. Despite being unable to see for the past 10 years, he can keep up with his favourite newspapers, type his own documents and even finish a novel. Thanks to institutions like the South African Library for the Blind, barriers for the visually impaired are well on their way to destruction.
Vrywillige oorgawe of skuldberading? Vrywillige oorgawe of skuldberading?

Met so ‘n begin gaan dit ‘n opwindende jaar vir sport by HS Secunda wees.

KI Twala opens school hall The official opening of KI Twala Secondary School’s new hall was a festive occasion. Students, teachers and sponsors gathered at the eMbalenhle school on 5 March 2018, filling the day with song, dance and gratitude. The opening began with entrancing traditional performances by KI Twala learners, followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony. The KI Twala Choir christened the hall with a moving performance, which made way for the thanksgiving speeches that concluded the proceedings. The newly built hall is an initiative of the Southern Highveld Community Development Trust (SHCDT). With programmes that aim to empower the youth through education, the trust is sponsored by Graceland Hotel Casino and Country Club. JP Mlangeni, the SHCD trustee chairperson, said that the donation would be an enhancement to the already good work of the school. The hall will be used to write exams, facilitate school events and accommodate large classes. Nontuthuzelo Thwala, a representative from KI Twala, said that the hall exceeded all expectations. “When we made this request, we only asked for a shelter,” she said. The SHCDT, however, remained one step ahead. Thwala also mentioned plans to further the positive donation by adding flooring to the hall in the near future, as well as acquiring desks that the students could use in the building. – Rorisang Rathebe

Lifalethu goes mobile Lifalethu Primary School received two mobile classrooms and lavatories on 9 March 2018. The pristine facilities are the product of a collaboration between SASOL and WBHO Construction. The official handover of the new installations was a joyous event for the school, beginning with a thundering welcome from the school’s majorettes, and ending off with performances from the choir and gumboot dancers. These festivities were punctuated by formal addresses from representatives of all parties involved. Mr Pat Kolobe, the principal of Lifalethu, made special mention to Mags Naidoo, the WBHO contractor whom he described as overwhelmingly dedicated to overseeing the project. The donation of the facilities began with a request that was made in 2017. “I was intrigued and decided to investigate the request by making an unannounced visit to the school,” said Naidoo. “I was really impressed by the excellent management of the school, and despite the learning environment, I could see the passion of the educators and the hunger for knowledge by the little ones.” Having made an impression from this single visit, the school received the favour of this collaborative investment.
The project maintained the same orderly organisation that the school itself has, and was completed on time, within normal safety regulations, and involved only local subcontractors. “This successful collaboration is the result of passionate leadership by the senior management from SASOL and WBHO,” Naidoo said. Speaking in the Mayor’s absence, Sakhile Mahlangu called the initiative a seed that was sown. “What has been planted here today will, even for future generations, always be part of the identity of eMbalenhle’s society,” he said. As such, he went on, the term ‘investment’ was an ideal way of describing the handover, since the community would continue to reap its benefits for years to come. Dr Vilakazi, a representative of the Mpumalanga Department of Education, emphasised the importance of the culture in which young children receive their education, suggesting that this donation was the beginning of a positive culture of learning. As the mobile classrooms are intended for facilitating Grade R classes, Dr Vilakazi viewed the investment as a necessary grassroots contribution to the growth of students who would eventually acquire responsibility, morality and maturity. – Rorisang Rathebe

Sasol Rugby triumphant
Theus Kruger from Sasol secunda reaching for the ball as one of NWU Vaal players is bundles out
Sasol set the scene for a year of exciting rugby on Saturday when they played NWU Vaal at Sasol Rugby Club grounds. The successes of last year will form the basis for the team in 2018. NWU Vaal struggled from the beginning. Sasol scored their first points early in the game. The point came at regular intervals thereafter. Sasol Rugby Club beat NWU Vaal (Vanderbijlpark) 61-7. The backline of Sasol had some very good moments with some line break being made by everyone in the backline. The wings and fullback attacked very well and were able to penetrate the defences easily at times. Where lineouts plagued the Sasol team at the end of last year, and also cost them dearly, it seemed to be ironed out. The lineouts are still a bit sloppy but a lot of work has gone into the lineout throw-ins and it
showed. Only a few lineouts were not executed correctly, but it is only the beginning of the year. Scrums did not go as well as it should with Sasol’s front row being pushed upwards out of the scrum on occasion. The scrum did not appear as solid as it should be and looked a little vulnerable at times. NWU Vaal managed to score a try. Poor defences by Sasol led to the try. Sasols defences proved to be good on the day though, and they allowed NWU Vaal no grounds to move in. The biggest negative point in Sasols armour is their handling skills. A few try-scoring opportunities were lost due to unforced errors by Sasol. This should be ironed out as soon as possible. The biggest positive is Sasol Rugby Club’s attitude. They have shown a will to play, and to play as a team!

26th Kosmos 3-in-1 did not disappoint.
The 26th PwC Kosmos-3-in-1, held at Lake Umuzi in Secunda, started off cloudy but nonetheless, it turned out to be a perfect day for the runners and all the spectators. This year saw a record number of entries. A total of 2244 runners entered the 42,2km, 2456 runners entered the 21,1 km and 2716 entered the 10km race. 1955 runners entered for the 3-in-1. The total distance of the 3-in-1 is 73.3km’s. Paul Gerrard from Harriers in Randburg, won the 42.2 km in a time of 02:31:12 and he was also the overall winner of the Kosmos 3-in-1 with a time of 04:42:32 on all three distances. The 1st female home for the 42.2 km was Melinda Jansen van Vuuren in a time of 03:11:14. Melinda Jansen van Vuuren was also the overall ladies winner with a time of 05:48:11 over all three distances. The 21,1 Km was won by Jabulane Khoza from Eskom, in a time of 01:13:07 and Wendy Msezane from Ermelo, was the 1st female to cross the finish line in a time of 01:34:38.
The 10 km race was won by Katleho Moloi in a time of 00:32:29 and the 1st female runner was Glenrose Xaba in a time of 00:37:15. One of the key factors to help make the race such a huge success each year, are the water points along the route. A total of 25 water points were spread out along the route. Each year there is a competition to determine the best water point. This year was no exception to the rule. The overall winner was Laerskool Secunda, 3rd year in a row, 2nd place was Proconics and the 3rd place went to Rawson Properties. Well done to you all in keeping the runners hydrated. I’m sure it was no easy task for the judges to pick the winners. The following sponsors were instrumental in the success of the event: PwC as the main sponsor, Lake Umuzi, Jetline Action Photo, Modern Athlete, Zinplex, Sanitech, Garbie, The Bulletin, Mediclinic, Zinmag Sport, Run Clean, Coca Cola, Skipgo, Finishtime and last but not least the Secunda Marathon Club.
