Mixed election results

The 2019 elections have been finalised and all the votes counted. The various political parties will now have to go back to the planning rooms to analyse all the results. But what happened to the votes in Govan Mbeki Municipality? How did the various parties fare? Who was the big winners and who was the big losers? A few major parties were very active in the runup to the election. The DA had their posters up first and had an extensive campaign with their #onesaforall slogan. The ANC was very slow to place their posters and relied on Cyril Ramaphoza’s pleas for forgiveness. The EFF plastered the town red with illegally placed posters

and made promises of land and jobs now. The largely white and smaller FF+ placed election posters with the slogan: Hit Back. Before this election it was only the DA that showed continual growth but lost 3 seats nationally. The ANC declined from 62,15% to 57,50%. This was mostly due to the growth of the EFF. The EFF grew to 10,79% of the national vote. The FF+ succeeded in winning a lot of DA votes and increased by 2,38%. The IFP clung in the mix and secured 3,38% of the national votes. The Mpumalanga results also show a number of interesting shifts in the peoples voting. The ANC will be the biggest loser with a decline in votes from 2014. During the 2014 elections

the ANC secured 78,23% of the votes but declined to 70,58% of the votes. The EFF replaced the DA as the official opposition in the provincial legislature with an increase from 6,26% to 12,79%. The DA lost some momentum and slid from 10,40% to 9,77%. The surprise of the election in Mpumalanga is the resurgence of the FF+. They increased their vote percentage from 0,82% to 2,43%. The final seat allocation for Mpumalanga is as follows: ANC 22, EFF 4, DA 3 and FF+ 1. In Govan Mbeki Municipality the ANC secured 58,38%, the DA 16,33%, EFF 14,76% and the FF+ 4,94% of the national votes. It could be a worrying factor that radical and blatantly racist party Black Land First received 373

votes. Although our views are and beliefs are protected under our constitution and society should not tolerate racism. The shift in voters is mostly from the ANC towards the EFF and the FF+ won most of their new voters from the DA. The traditional DA wards all had to relinquish some voters to the FF+ but Bethal showed the most votes won by the FF+. The rural areas and traditional ANC strongholds were hardest hit by the EFF. This election also saw the ANC grip on their voter base slowly slipping. Democracy has spoken and only time will tell how the different parties will prepare for the next municipal elections.

snippets Two arrested for video on “double voting”

Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin -

Pretoria - 10 May 20 - Two people, a journalist and a woman, have been arrested after a video was posted claiming that they cast votes more than once. On the day of the elections 8 May, Etienne Mare (52) posted a video claiming that he was on his way to vote for a second time after hearing from Malinda Halloway (57) that she had been “able to do so herself”. The Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (JOINTS), in a statement yesterday, promised that all of the social media postings in which people claimed to have voted more than once will be investigated and culprits brought to book. On 9 May, members of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga were able to track down the suspects and arrested them. Both Mare and Halloway appeared in the Barberton Magistrates Court on 10 May on charges of contravening Section 88 (d) Voting more than once, Section 89 (i)(a) Intentional making a false statement, alt fraud and Section 90(2)(a) Infringement of secrecy. The arrest of these two suspects brings the total to 24 suspects arrested for the alleged contravention of Electoral Act pertaining to the attempted double voting. These 24 include 17 from Danhauser, 2 from Hluhluwe, one from Izingolweni, one from Sawoti, one from Douglasdale and now the two from Barberton. On the question of the alleged “double votes”, that is a matter under investigation by the Independent

Electoral Commission (IEC). We request anyone with information of such contraventions to contact our Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with strictest confidence.

Provincial commissioner hails arrest of cops and health official for dealing in dagga The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, hailed a joint team of the SAPS comprising of Crime Intelligence and TRT members for sterling work done. This team ensured that two members attached to the relatively new police station of KaMhlushwa, near Malelane, were brought to book for their unscrupulous behaviour. The two members, a Sergeant and a Constable, both in their early 30s were arrested yesterday around 17:20, after they were found in possession of three large bags of dagga. The team carried out a sting operation after having acquired information that the pair may have been in the process of transporting dagga. It was indicated that the suspects were travelling in one of the members’ private vehicle, with one of them being off-duty and the other, on-duty. The team pulled them off, demanding to search the vehicle, at which point the three bags were found inside the car resulting in their arrest. The suspects will appear at the Tonga Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 May, facing a charge of dealing in dagga. Meanwhile at neighbouring Schoemansdal, a joint team also comprising of TRT and station members arrested a 49 year old Department of Health employee, employed as a Driver, together with a 42 year old man for dealing in dagga. The duo was arrested on 6 May, at about 02:30, when they were found with compressed dagga weighing 5.9kg, while traveling in a state vehicle belonging to the Department, attached to the Shongwe Hospital. The suspects already appeared at the Boschfontein Periodical Court, the following day where David Nkosi aged 49 (department employee), was released on warning whilst his accomplice, 42-year-old Foster Zulu was granted a R500 bail. They are expected to appear on 30 May at the same court again. General Zuma said that it is sad that civil servants including the police are involved in the proliferation of dagga, especially within the Tonga Cluster. “There is no space for such criminal elements in the SAPS in particular and the government in general. These arrests should serve as a stern warning to other civil servants currently involved in similar activities that their days are numbered because the net is closing on them”, said the Provincial Commissioner. Feedback on the sensational case of the robbery and stock theft case in Breyten involving 334 cattle, worth R3.1 million was heard at the Breyten Periodical Court where the five suspects appeared. They were remanded in custody and the case postponed to 17 May for bail application. The suspects are Corneluis van der Walt (55), Jan-Spruyt Steenkamp (32), Sibusiso Mabuse (43), Lucas Magagula (35) and Vusi Mhlongo (34). Originally twelve suspects were

17 May 2019 arrested and they appeared yesterday, 29 May at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court, wherein seven had their cases dropped against them

Rapist stepfather gets life imprisonment Thursday, 9 May 2019, the Mbibane Regional Court sentenced a 50-yearold man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a 13 year old minor in April 2018. The accused was in a relationship with the victim’s mother and were all staying together in one house as a family in Leeufontein village near Mammetlake, Mpumalanga. Evidence presented in court was that, on the night of 14 April 2018, the victim was sleeping in her room and the accused woke up, went to the victim’s room where he ordered her to undress, he further ordered the victim to lie on top of the bed and he raped her. He then threatened the victim not to tell anyone. The following morning, the victim informed her aunt about the rape ordeal who alerted the police and the accused was arrested. During the police investigation, the Regional Court Prosecutor, Rhofhiwa Khorommbi, worked closely with the investigator, DNA results were obtained and the accused was positively linked to the offence, a social worker’s report was also handed in, which left the accused with no option but to plead guilty to the offence. The state further indicated that crimes of this nature are mostly done by people known to the victims, therefore, a minimum prescribed sentenced must be imposed. During sentencing, the magistrate told the court that, the accused traumatised the victim and he even destroyed the level of trust between him and the victim as a stepfather. He then sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court ordered that the accused’s name be entered into the Sexual Offences Register. He was found unfit to work with children and to possess a firearm. The accused committed this rape offence while he was out on parole after he was convicted and sentenced for housebreaking with intent to rape and rape he committed in 2012. The Acting DPP in Mpumalanga, Advocate Matric Luphondo, acknowledges and welcomes the historic ground-breaking court ruling, saying that justice was served and the survivor of this heinous crime will find peace. He further commends the collaboration and integrated manner in which the sector departments in the justice cluster worked together on this case and will ensure that in all cases this practice is further strengthened and resourced. The sentencing and the conditions stipulated by the court are a great achievement and are therefore a milestone in the eradication of Gender Based Violence in line with the earlier call by President Ramaphosa during the Presidential Gender Based Violence Summit. Gas bottle explodes At about 06H50 on Friday, 10 May, a gas bottle exploded at a house in Suikerbosrand street, Secunda. According to witnesses the mother, who broke a window to get her daughter out of the house, cut her hand. Both mother and daughter were transported to hospital by Langamed. GMM Fire and Jelani were on scene ensuring that the fire was extinguished properly. The explosion of the Gas Cylinder at a house in Suikerbosrand street, Secunda is a very unfortunate incident.

GAS IS A VERY SAFE alternative to electricity, providing you follow the laws of gas safety. Some very important tips are: 1. Make sure that you buy your gas at responsible and reputable dealers. 2. The cheapest cylinder is not always the safest (rogue fillers). 3. Check that your gas dealer is adhering to all the safety rules. 4. Regularly check your seals on both the LP Gas cylinder valves and the gas equipment. 5. Make sure that the hoses (hoses should have no cracks in) regulators

and cylinders are not leaking. 6. Small cylinders (3kg, 4.5kg, 5kg, 7kg etc.) may not be filled if they were manufactured before 1971, dented, rusted or repainted by any gas dealer. 7. Make sure you know how to store and transport your cylinder in a correct manner 8. Always leave a window slightly open for ventilation when you are using a gas cylinder in your home. 9. Make sure that you have a valid COC from a registered gas installer if you use gas stoves, gas fridges and gas geysers.

Accidents and incidents happen mostly because of a lack of knowledge and ignorance, but take heart that your friendly gas lady at Evander and Petroleum & Gas, checks your cylinders for leaks and legality when you come to refill. If you want to be re-assured and you have some cylinders that have not been used for a long time, bring them in for a check-up and we shall assist you to bring it up to standard! STAY WARM AND COSY WITH A GAS HEATER, IN THE GLOW OF A GAS LIGHT, EATING THE FOOD COOKED ON A GAS STOVE AFTER HAVING A WARM BATH FROM A GAS GEYSER‌ MOST IMPORTANTLY BE AWARE AND STAY SAFE! - Diane Berning

Fantasties, dink ek toe. En ek lees verder. “Ek het my Twitter-profiel geskep toe ek net 11 jaar oud was. Is Afrikaans as taal ook vervang deur Googliaans, of Whatsappiaans? Of deur ‘n tipe van ‘n New Age-jargon? Say’s in soos amazing. May pô moet net chill.

gestimuleer deur Googleinligting, werklik so groot?

My oupagrootjie was daaroor in Ceylon in die tronk. Ek was self 18.

Misty Waters rocked everyone’s socks off again The past weekend Misty Waters music festival rocked Secunda. This three-day open-air festival has been running for 3 years and this year was my first time attending. On Friday morning, 10 May, the excitement was palpable at Lake Umuzi and Kamp Oase. Everyone was running around: campers were setting up camp, food trucks were being set

up, bars were being stocked and in the cold morning breeze the men braved the cold water to ensure the Misty Waters sign would be up and ready to burn. The later in the afternoon, the busier it became. At 17:00 Zebra ran on stage to open Misty Waters. The mystical three-day music adventure was kicked off rocking! Friday night was

spectacular and it wasn’t over because the party continued until the early hours of the morning in front of the bon fire. Saturday, 11 May, was a bit of a slow start for all the party animals, but when the first band started playing at 12:00, Earl Grey & Croquet, the energetic vibe returned to the Kamp Oase terrain. Slowly, but surely, their music started to pull everyone back to the stage area. Saturday was also the day no one could wait for… The Black Cat Bones, Fokofpolisiekar and Straatligkinders were on the cards. There is no need for any introduction with these three legendary South African bands. The Black Cat Bones opened for Fokofpolisiekar and ensured everyone was in the mosh pit head banging and arms in the air! They ensured that their music made the mood electrifying. Fokofpolisiekar hit the stage for their sound check and the crowd went ballistic. “Francois! Francois! Francois!” At that point, I was backstage and felt the energy surge through me, Francois van Coke was standing next to me and hearing the crowd go mad, created a contradictory moment. The calm he exuded reflected the mark of true showmanship. Once he had run on stage, the energy erupted! Hemel op die Platteland was their opening song and the crowd sang the song with the band. There were people on top of another’s shoulders and no words could explain their performance that night except, maybe, mystical and enchanting! With Saturday setting up high expectations Sunday, 12 May, was more laid back and being the last day of the festival, everyone was sad

to leave, but this did not dampen anyone’s mood. At 11:00 The Lebowski hit the stage, but the big act everyone was waiting for and the festival’s closing band was Spoegwolf. Spoegwolf invited everyone on stage and seats were brought onto the stage for people to sit and enjoy the show. That was a perfect ending to the three days of rock, blues, folk and indie. The festival was amazing, but what was even more interesting was what was going on behind the scenes. To set up the sound is a total of 14 and a half hours. There were approximately 600 cables on stage, 54 lights and 35 speakers were used. 10 of these speakers were 20 HTL-6 speakers and 6 were subwoofers. To pack up all this equipment and ensure that nothing was lost, forgotten or had to be repacked at the warehouse, took 7 hours or the 7-hour strike as the sound team from Fame Productions calls it. The team of organisers: Dian Rosslee, Alistair Rosslee and Rolin Booysen, took 7 months to get everything in place. Even though they looked calm on the outside, on the inside they were running through all the plans ensuring everything is perfect. I would highly recommend Misty Waters to any rock enthusiast. It was my first festival and it shall definitely not be my last! - Ané Prinsloo

Jamboree of all jamborees Free Masons, a movement shrouded in mystery, sometimes secrecy, sometimes controversy and mostly misunderstood. The Bulletin spoke to Charles Burn, Assistant District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge, South Africa North. Charles explained some of the functions, fears and questions regarding Free Masonry. The Freemasonry is one of the oldest and largest, non-religious, non-political and charitable organisations in the world. “Freemasonry is based on the principles of kindness, honesty, fairness, tolerance and integrity,” said Charles, “it teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of Ceremonies.” Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that traces its origins to the local Fraternities of medieval stonemasons’ guilds, which from the 14th century set wages, trained apprentices and regulated who could practice the craft. Masons studied measurement, geometry and mathematics. They built cathedrals and castles from stone while the expert masons acted as architects and engineers. By the end of the 17th century, guilds became obsolete due to the decline in cathedral and castle building. The majority of lodge members became “gentlemen enthusiasts” practising speculative masonry. The Grand Lodge of England, under

which the Highveld Lodge operates, was formed in 1717. The District of South Africa North is the largest District of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) outside of England and comprise of 100 lodges with around 2000 members. It also covers a geographical area of the old Transvaal and includes Botswana, Swaziland and Mauritius. Freemasonry exists throughout the world, however each Grand Lodge is sovereign and independent. There is no international governing body for Freemasonry. Freemasonry has a long history of charitable support for the less fortunate

members of society. The Highveld Lodge held a Jamboree on Saturday, 4 May, at the Sky Hill Entertainment Centre. The main aim was to raise funds for charitable work. A number of men from all areas in Govan Mbeki Municipality were invited to a “Men Only” event. The Bulletin arrived to find smells of Portuguese food hanging in the air and men enjoying themselves. After a while the food was served and everybody had a blast. There was an entry fee to the event that went towards the Highveld Lodge Charity fund and towards the food and drinks.

A number of sports memorabilia were auctioned off and some fetched really high prices. The highlight of the evening was certainly when Jose Maciel handed, on behalf of the Highveld Lodge, an electric wheelchair to a beneficiary. His wife was wheelchair bound for 40 years and couldn’t really be mobile. He also distributed large sums of the proceeds to fellow lodges in the area so that they could use for their own charitable work. The evenings formal proceeding was concluded with a spectacular fireworks display. It was really a grand affair.

So ook jou “siel

“Ek beskou my beroep as ‘n roeping, gedurende my standerd agt jaar het ek ervaar dat die Here my roep as maatskaplike werker.
