ANC wins ward from DA we are disappointed in the result of the byelection, it is more than disappointment, it is a concern. As a party the DA has always seen ourselves as a party able to unite communities on the base of our needs for services which should be provided by government. We are still of the firm opinion that
I
n a hotly contested by-election on Wednesday, 9 October, the ANC managed to win ward 28 back from the DA. The Bulletin wrote in last week’s edition that the two smaller parties must create miracles to be able to topple the two bigger parties. This was nearly achieved by the good showing of the FF+. The FF+ came very close to winning the ward but in the end only succeeded to hand the ward back to the ANC. Only a handful of votes was needed to secure the ward. Unfortunately, the rivalry between the FF+ and the DA only resulted in securing the ward for the ANC. Low voter turnouts, especially in the voting station in Emzinoni, MD Coovadia, hampered the performance of both the DA and the ANC. Mostly the ANC as this is their voter base. The turnout was 38,4% at Laerskool Marietjie van Niekerk and at MD Coovadia it was 29.5%. There were several reasons stated by the voters for the huge surge towards the FF+ in Bethal. According to the voters some of the reasons were the statements made by Mmusi Maimane in his public speeches, other stated the growing concern of the repatriation of land and some also stated the poor performance of the previous DA councillor in ward 28. The Bulletin asked the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) for their commentary on their excellent performance during the past by-election in ward 28. This is their response (Translated from Afrikaans): ”The past by-elections in Mpumalanga showed that the political landscape in South Africa is busy changing and that stronger coalitions between opposition parties will oppose the ANC
thoroughly. These coalitions will allow opposition parties to lead on National, Provincial and local levels to ensure that the ANC does not achieve an absolute majority to rule. The results of the By-election in Bethal (ward 28) on 9 October strengthen this statement. The FF+ only achieved 6 votes less than the ANC. The ANC won the ward with 36% of the votes. Bethal (ward 28) was a previous DA controlled ward. In Lydenburg the DA won with a narrow margin of 48% of the votes cast (81% in 2016). The FF+’s support grew to 33% from a previous 8%. These results clearly show that there is an increased possibility to stop the ANC through coalitions. The FF+ believes that a true power shift can only be achieved when voters vote according to their convictions for a party that shares their values. This is happening now and the public is no longer fooled by a lie that voting for another party as the official opposition is a wasted vote. The FF+ had huge successes during the National elections on 8 May and the successes that were achieved during the by-elections on 9 October show that this trend will continue to the benefit of the normal voter that does not want to sacrifice their values.” The Bulletin also approached the Democratic Alliance on the election results. Bosman Grobler, DA Provincial Chairperson – Mpumalanga wrote the following: “It will be an understatement to say that
South Africans don’t differ in their expectations regarding government and its responsibilities. It is quite clear that ANC services delivery failures were pinned on the DA and this shows that we have a responsibility to strengthen our democracy by clearly defining the roles of the ruling party and the opposition. The impact of the result of the byelection is that the ruling party has been given a stronger mandate to make decisions in Govan Mbeki. This is utterly disappointing, as Govan Mbeki municipality is one the worst run municipalities in the province, with huge outstanding debt to both Eskom and Rand Water, as well as a total lack of service delivery. Accountability towards the budget, as well as the planning cycles of the municipality has been weakened by the result of the by-election. Personally I feel that our project to build a South Africa where every individual, regardless of our differences, can live the life he or she values, has taken a step back, should we continue on the trend, the realisation of this dream, will be postponed by a further 10 - 15 years.”
The Bulletin asked if poor performance by the DA in ward 28 played a role in the good performance of the FF+. Bosman replied: “I think first and foremost one should keep in mind that the ANC is the ruling party in Govan Mbeki municipality. It is very difficult for an opposition councillor to implement projects in their wards, because the ANC still have the final budget vote. To take a step back, while being in opposition across the country, the DA has been building a strong and united opposition, in order to have a platform to launch a credible campaign to win a municipality. This has worked very well and we see the results in various metros where voters kept their trust in the DA. This requires trust and patience from the voter, which is clearly lacking in Govan Mbeki and evident in ward 28. As a party the DA is proud of the systems and structures we have in place to hold our public representatives to account. We are the only political party in the world that has formal target setting and evaluation for our public representatives. We are of the opinion that our public representatives are accountable in their wards and make a difference where they can. Having said that, the DA councillor that resigned from ward 28 Govan Mbeki, had exceptionally difficult personal circumstances and at times might have lacked in serving the community to a certain standard. That being said, even underperforming DA councillors serve communities better than most other public representatives. As the DA we will not stop fighting for the dream we believe in, this is the only long-term solution for South Africa. A South Africa, where every individual, regardless of our differences, can live the life he or she values… “ The Bulletin asked the previous councillor for her comments on the by-election results, but she declined to comment. The Bulletin would like to congratulate the ANC on winning the ward. Only time would tell if the new councillor, Mabhiyane Andries Sipela, would be able to make a difference in Bethal. -Encee van Huyssteen

Government needs communities in crime prevention not vigilantism MEC Shabalala said Communities are critical in the fight against crime and SAPS alone won’t prevent and solve crime cases already existing. The community should do that by reporting any suspicious activities or individuals to the police. Communities must report any crime suspects to the police whether the suspects are related to them or not. This will go a long way towards creating a safer society that we all aspire to. While communities’ participation is essential in preventing and solving crime, any acts of vigilantism are condemned

in the strongest possible terms. No person should take the law into their own hands. Mob justice has devastating consequences and it is also criminal for anybody to take the law into their own hands. This is according to Ms. Gabisile Shabalala following incidences of mob justice that reportedly occurred in the central business district (CBD) of Mbombela on Monday, 7 October. It is alleged that a group of people who are believed to be street traders went around some streets around the Mbombela CBD apparently searching for people they believed were dealing in drugs. They came across a certain male whom they accused of dealing in drugs. They were about to assault him when the police came and rescued him. He was taken to the police station and the people followed them demanding that the police must hand him over to them. Some businesses around the CBD were closed for business on Monday, 7 October. “Communities must allow rule of law to prevail and not take matters in their own hands because they will be arrested. Lawlessness will not be tolerated and the police will be closely monitoring. Therefore, the communities should raise their concerns without infringing on the rights of others. They must also report any suspicious activities to the police regardless of who is involved,” Shabalala stated. The MEC says while she understands the consequences of criminal activities and proliferation of drugs on communities and how these activities tear families and communities apart, mob justice is not a way to go. Shabalala says those who engage in mob justice could find themselves behind bars. She has encouraged communities to work with the police and rather expose any SAPS members who are corrupt or are not doing their work properly so that appropriate steps are taken against any such individuals. She added that mob justice activities portray the country in a negative light to the outside world and this will adversely affect the economy of the province and the country as a whole.
of goods and cash to the amount of R15 000. They then fled the scene taking off towards Carolina. A Detective who was also driving in the same direction, to attend court at Carolina, got wind of the matter through the police radio and almost at the same time, the mentioned suspects’ vehicle, a blue Volkswagen Polo, overtook the state vehicle he was driving. His vast police experience kicked in, as he assessed the situation and realised it could be dangerous for him to tackle the suspects by himself. The quick-thinking cop contacted the neighbouring police station ahead in Carolina to intercept the vehicle that he was following. Police in Carolina set up a Vehicle Check Point and as soon as the suspects’ vehicle arrived at the checkpoint, they discovered that the men and women in blue have long been waiting for them. They were pulled over for a search. Cash as well as cigarette boxes and the victim’s driver’s licence were recovered. Two firearms with serial numbers filed off were also found and seized. They were arrested and subsequently appeared on 6 May at the same court, where they were remanded in custody for further investigation. The dedicated Detective continued his investigation and has since established that one of the firearms had been stolen in Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng. Also, that the one suspect, Mashele, was wanted for a murder case in Bushbuckridge, where he was known as Tumelo Presley Theko. The trio reappeared at the same court on 10 October. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma appreciated the sterling work done by all members involved in capturing the villains. General Zuma particularly could not withhold his appreciation for the dedicated member (Detective) who was instrumental in ensuring that these suspects did not evade arrest and for his dedication and discipline in ensuring that further investigations were carried out regarding the suspects.
Two sedans head on collision leaves three people dead
Trio arrested for fraud
Three people have lost their lives following a head on collision that occurred between two sedans; a Polo VW)and an Opel sedan on the N2 road between Ermelo and Mkhondo. The collision occurred around 18h30 on Tuesday, 8 October. The VW sedan travelled from Ermelo and was heading to Mkondo while the Opel sedan was moving in the opposite direction. Two of the deceased were occupants in the Opel sedan while another person who perished was in the VW sedan. The three died at the scene on impact. The deceased include the driver of one of the vehicles and two passengers. The seriously injured driver was stabilised on the scene before being rushed to Ermelo Hospital for further medical attention. The cause of the collision was investigated by the police. The road was closed and opened as soon as the wreckage had been cleared. Trio to appear for armed robbery and other charges Three men will appear at the Carolina Regional Court for the second time since their arrest on 2 May at Badplaas for the alleged robbery of a local foreign-owned shop in the area. The trio: Sipho Patrick Mathibela (31), Tshepo Presley Mashele (32) and Rendani Marshal Ndou (38) were arrested within minutes after they allegedly stormed into the shop armed with firearms and robbed the occupants
Police in Bethal arrested three men, 26 and 30, on Wednesday, 3 October, for misrepresentation or forged documents used to defraud other people’s money. The arrest came after the police spotted an African male distributing pamphlets about an investment scheme next to Standard Bank in Bethal. The police requested the man to take them to the office they were operating from and found two men; one was operating as the manager and the other as a consultant. When asked about the trading certificate, the consultant produced a copy of the certificate which was proven to be fake. The suspects were arrested for trading as a financial institution without a license. The three suspects will appear at Bethal magistrates court facing fraud charges. According to the Bethal police spokesperson, this is the second pyramid scheme to have operated in Bethal and both started to operate in August. “The first pyramid scheme was City Financials Trading which operated from August 2018 where the company left with thousands of Rands invested by investors,” said Constable Thomas Mogadime. “This year in August a new investment company called Crypto Ampire started operating and the police managed to recover the current invested money,” added Constable Mogadime. As the festive season is approaching, the police are urging the community not to fall prey to the pyramid schemes hoping to get quick double pay-outs from their investments.

Illegal dumping poses health and safety threat in GMM eMbalenhle It has been over a year, if not more, since the burning and looting of eMbalenhle Mall by angry community members. The community was angry at the Govan Mbeki Municipality for the ridiculous power cuts that are still ongoing. Several trucks and cars were burnt to ashes too. Since then the rubbish collection in the township has been a mess, if you are driving around eMbalenhle there is illegal dumping sites in almost all of the different sections. This includes all sorts of rubbish, which is a huge health and safety threat and is very harmful to the community. In one instance The Bulletin came across cow carcasses and “vultures” helping themselves to the leftovers. Everyone knows how dangerous that is to the health of the community, more importantly: to young children. One of the councillors who spoke to The Bulletin said that people drive from all over the township to dump garbage in illegal spots and that is very harmful to everyone’s health. We all know the situation in the Govan Mbeki Municipality; the infrastructure is not where it should be because of the increasing number of people coming in on a daily basis and that affects service delivery. The community is faced with a huge sewer blockage problem and it is suspected that illegal dumping is one of the causes. The community will have to change their attitude to change the situation in eMbalenhle. If everyone can take a pledge to refrain from littering everywhere the community can live in a conducive environment.
The community is encouraged to use designated trash bins. Do not litter! Keep our township as clean as possible. We all know that Govan Mbeki Municipality is struggling with many challenges, but we can help by becoming better people, environmental health is very important. One of the older citizens in Mandela Section said that people dump all sorts of rubbish in front of her gate. Many a time she has found dead dogs, skinned animals and this attracts flies. We took a drive to the road next to Megabus, near Osizweni School, where we found the carcasses dumped and all sorts of other disturbing images. It is also public knowledge that there was African Swine Fever in eMbalenhle. Community members are urged to refrain from littering everywhere as the garbage can be very contagious. There are many complaints from Roodebank community just after eMbalenhle on the road to Mpumelelo mine. They said that several vehicles have been spotted dumping waste on the side of the road which negatively affects them. Evander Residents have been complaining about illegal dumping for a very long time. Two areas are mainly used, one on the road passing the old dumping road and the other at the water tower. Other areas also appear sporadically. The Bulletin saw a huge fire on Friday near the water tower in Evander. Upon investigation it became clear that the fire started because of refuge that was illegally dumped. Black smoke was billowing upwards. As The Bulletin team left the scene, they came across a
MEC Gillion Mashego visits VUKTA The month of October is known as Transport month and various Transport Departments are engaging in a commitment to ensure the safety on the roads of South Africa. The Department of Public Works and SANTACO, the organisation behind taxis in South Africa, visited one of the biggest Taxi Associations in Mpumalanga, Vukanini Taxi Association (VUKTA), to launch the road safety campaign and to cleanup the local and long-distance taxi ranks. These ranks are in Secunda and eMbalenhle on Friday, 11 October. The day started off with a walk in the Secunda taxi rank where the MEC spoke to the drivers and passengers about day to day safety. The MEC, the Provincial Secretary of SANTACO and the VUKTA chairperson, Mr F Sibanyoni, took a ride from Secunda to Embalenhle to experience firsthand what most people have to experience every day. They paid their taxi fare and the taxi dropped them off at the Blue Rank in eMbalenhle. They cleaned up the Blue Rank and engaged with passengers who were about to depart to their different destinations. The MEC spoke to the drivers but he made it clear that when he comes back next time the association should have employed at least four women taxi drivers, especially for long distances. He said that women have the capacity to drive long distances and if they can drive buses and fly aeroplanes, what is stopping them from driving taxis? Speaking on behalf of SANTACO, Mr Sibanyoni, the Provincial Secretary, said that they have started a yearly
program that teaches advanced driving skills to taxi drivers and how to treat passengers. “There is an ongoing competition from province to province for Driver of the Year, Taxi Rank of the Year and Owner of the Year. These competitions are currently hosted by us and we want to change the perception of the taxi industry. That it is not for uneducated people. We now have taxi drivers and owners with Degrees,” Mr Sibanyoni said. One of the questions that was asked by the media was if the MEC is aware that the road between Secunda and eMbalenhle (R580) is known as the Slaughterhouse because of the high accident rate. MEC promised to have a look and will hand in a motion from the province but he said that he will speak with GMM mayor later that day about upgrades in this municipality. The issue of pick up and drop offs was also brought to the MEC by VUKTA drivers. The MEC promised to look into it. VUKTA currently employees more than 1000 drivers and it contributes to the GDP of South Africa. The taxi industry in South Africa contributes more than 5% to the GDP of South Africa. This makes it one of the major industries and it has to be recognised and helped. Taxi Associations in the province are encouraged to visit VUKTA to learn how to run a successful organisation from management to office administration. Other associations present were Ermelo Taxi Association and Neighbourhood Taxi Association. “It was a good to see the peace within the taxi industry,” concluded the Department of Public Works in Mpumalanga. - Sandile Mkhwanazi
Evander
eMbalenhle small truck illegally dumping building materials. The closure of the only refuge dump in Evander was a long time ago and residents were left to find other means without any clear indication from GMM. The rest of GMM is no different. Illegal dumping is taking place at an unprecedented rate. When the Illegal Dumpers were approached one was met with indifference and anger. GMM will not change if the attitude of litterers does not change. Please do not litter! Reuse. Reduce. Recycle. - Sandile Mkhwanazi

Of is dit dalk so dat net jou foute jou sal oorleef? Wanneer is genoeg uiteindelik
genoeg?

PJ is back with a bang and a song In a small town like Secunda being a celebrity is not easy. Someone who has first-hand experience is PJ Pretorius. This story may seem like one you’ll read every day, but when PJ sat down with me for this exclusive article, he opened up about a lot of struggles and accomplishments he has achieved and failed at in his life. With a mischievous glint in his blue eyes his favourite thing that he said in the interview was: “This is off the record, right?” Now ladies and gentlemen, most of these things will stay off the record… For now. PJ was born in Sasolburg and at the age of 12 he moved with his family to Secunda. He attended Laerskool Kruinpark and Hoërskool Oosterland. At a young age he was very involved with the church and his faith is still very important to him. PJ discovered his love for performing at church and after school attended Eksderde in Pretoria. Eksderde is a Non-Profit Organisation. He was also sent all over the country as a Worship Leader. Even though this fulfilled him as a person, PJ felt he wanted to pursue a career in singing. In 2017 this dream became a reality when he entered The Voice, Season 2 and finished in the Top 10. PJ shared his experience and it was not all sunshine and roses as it appeared to be. “You enter the competition and think to yourself that you should be better than the other competitors. This is the wrong mindset to have. You are your own worst enemy. I realised that a bit late in the competition and changed my mindset. I had to compete against myself, NOT the others.” “After returning from The Voice I thought I had arrived. I did not really realise the consequences of my actions. I had a managing team that did everything for me. The thing is though, the music industry is not for the faint hearted and just because you make it, does not mean that you will succeed. I learned that the hard way.” After returning to Secunda, PJ was hot property, as they say and he also acted that way. A lot of bad press came
with this attitude and more so horrible mistakes. He was accused of a lot of things. “I am only human and I make mistakes. I learned that people sit and wait for you to make a mistake and that is the only thing that matters to them.” But with a lot of negativity following him, he still endured and is now back with a bang! This reminds me of the lyrics of Sara Bareilles: “You can be amazing. You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug. You can be the outcast or the backlash of somebody’s lack of love. Or you can start speaking up… Honestly I wanna see you be BRAVE!” That is what PJ is: BRAVE! He does not let any negativity get him down. “Some days you do not want to leave the house, but then I realise this is what I signed up for. Being in the public eye is difficult and people don’t always realise that I am human too.” Even though PJ has two of his songs, Natalie and 12 uit 10, playing on well-known music channels, both part of his new album, the album has not been released yet. The pre-launch was last year August. But as the devil would want it… A lot of things failed to work in his favour. The album will be released soon and is definitely a must have! He will also release a new songnamed One, which was produced by Daniel Baron (an award-winning and chart-topping singer, songwriter and producer). PJ recently connected with Anton van Wyk, his new manager and they have also started a two-man act. They will be performing original songs and some covers with PJ being the lead vocalist and playing the acoustic guitar and Anton on electric guitar and backup vocals. Anton was part of the award-winning band Van Diens Af. Van Diens Af was nominated and won the following awards: Huisgenoot Tempo nominated – Best Rock Album, SAMA (South African Music Awards) nominated – Best Rock Album and won the Rapport Vonk for the Best Rock Album of the year. With all Anton’s experience only amazing things are bound to
Caravan Club Southern Africa
Caravan Club Southern Africa’s South Eastern Region had their 40th anniversary over the past weekend. The Bulletin had the opportunity to speak to two club members that were at the inaugural rally 40 years ago (3 and 4 November 1979). The Caravan Club was formed in 1947 just after the Second World War. John and Ian attended the very first rally at Unicor park. Barend Buitendag from Easterns joined us in a very warm tent to discuss the weekend and the Caravan Club. Belonging to the Caravan Club is likened to belonging to a family. Friendships are forged on the camping grounds as campers and caravaners alike participate in the activities of
the weekend. One can choose to participate in games such as lawn darts or choose to sit back and relax. The Caravan Club struggles to maintain their membership levels as more and more people site busy schedules for not joining the club. The costs of caravans are also not helping the club. Rising costs in camping fees also seem to dampen the spirits. The Caravan Club strives to promote camping, touring and the tourism in Southern Africa. There are regular rallies hosted by over 40 regions throughout Southern Africa. There are rallies hosted by head office and also rallies hosted by different regions. Watch the video on Facebook.
Anton van Wyk and PJ Pretorius follow. The new direction the two are moving in is all about the crowd. “Crowd involvement in a show is all that matters. You can perform and people will just sit there. That is not what we want. We want our crowd to be involved in the shows and PJ is excellent in that department!” Anton said that he is very excited for this new venture with PJ. “This new act will bring two great talents together and showcase PJ in a whole new light. We are extremely eager to perform and show the people what we can do and the upcoming charity event at eish!! is the perfect opportunity!” All the new avenues PJ is exploring will only contribute positively to his career.
He is ready to show everyone what he is made of and that no matter what he is going to show the country what he is made of: Brave! – Ané Prinsloo

Neverland Circus visits charities According to the Oxford Dictionary a circus is defined as: A travelling company of acrobats, clowns and other entertainers which gives performances, typically in a large tent, in a series of different places. Never at Neverland Circus! During the past week the performers visited three different charities and The Bulletin accompanied them to two of the charities. The charities were: Janelle Huis – Child and Youth Care Centre in Evander, Cosmos Kriel Kinderhuis in Kriel and Tshepoyarena Learning Centre in Kinross. The first one was Janelle Huis. The Bulletin has a close relationship with Janelle Huis thanks to the late Aart Reedijk. Aart and his wife, Hester, always visited the house and adored the children, but loved giving back to the community even more. This is what happened at Janelle Huis: Upon arrival at Janelle Huis it was lunch time for the children. Each and every child wanted to jump up and see who is visiting them. When they saw my face, calm came over the rough waters of lunch time, but more disappointment to my own dismay. Little did they realise that a big surprise was waiting for them! The performers had chance to set up in the front garden and one by one, after finishing their lunch of course, the children came to the front garden and sat on the blankets. The show started! Lero Lero and Bidoza, the two clowns, were definitely the highlight for the children. The magic act, performed by Luara and Leonardo, brought a look of flabbergast onto the children’s little faces and so did the contortionist’s, Charné, performance. Kelsey entertained them with Fire Poi. Dimples, the ring mistress, assisted in translating to some of the children in Zulu. At one point each of the performers, who were not performing,
had a child come sit on their lap. The show was a huge success and I was not sure who enjoyed it more… the performers or the children! The next stop was the Cosmos Kriel Kinderhuis. Like at Janelle Huis, the show was supposed to be outside. Highveld weather, four seasons in one day and a 100% rain forecast prevented that. But never fear! A plan was made and the hall was utilised. There was one teeny weenie, unforeseen problem: the magic equipment could not fit through the door! This did not deter the performers! The clowns amused everyone with their silliness, Kelsey ensured there was a safe indoor Fire Poi performance and all the performers entertained the children and the caregivers. Charné, the contortionist, was called
back for an encore. No one could believe that she was able to contort her body the way she did. Tshepoyarena Learning Centre enjoyed the show just as much. The performers were shocked when some of the learners danced and sung for them. Alas! They could sit back and enjoy a
show! The Neverland Circus is a definite must see and is at Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club until 20 October. The Neverland Circus is an all human show and performed by artists from Brazil and South Africa.

Hierdie bome is nou reeds ouer as
135 jaar.
