Vote for Karen as Mrs Universe Local bodybuilding and fitness enthusiast, Karen Gräbe is ready for a new challenge. Her brand new gymnasium, KG Fit Gym, will open its doors soon next to Crawdaddy’s at Terra Nova in Trichardt. It is actually more than a gymnasium, it will be a lifestyle centre that sells fitness products, clothing and more. In the meantime, she is also going through the last stages of preparing for the Mrs Universe Competition in Georgia in Europe. Karen will be flying to Georgia on 31 May to represent South Africa. She was diagnosed with Lupus five years ago, but she believes she is healed. This disease causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues and organs. Karen has a full life and also gives bootcamp classes every day. It started when people asked her to give them classes. These conversations usually start with: ‘I want to look like you.’ Since Karen started with these classes it has grown from seven people per class to about 25. She gets up at 03:00 every morning, exercises from 04:00 to 05:00, then goes to work at Sasol where she works as a team assistant and after work she is busy with bootcamp classes. The body building and fitness bug bit Karen after she started exercising for health reasons. She now motivates many women and also gives fitness and nutrition advice online. “I want to help women to reach their full potential. “I still also learn about fitness and the body every day,” said Karen. She finished among the Top 5 in the WBFF South Africa in a Bikini Fitness competition in 2015 and was chosen to represent the country at the WBFF World Championships in Las Vegas. One of the things she has to do in the Mrs Universe Competition is to perform a dance. Although this does not come naturally for Karen, she sees it as just another

challenge. Luckily her 15-year-old daughter, Elrize, helps her with that. “A friend of mine sends me a video of the dance, then my daughter has to learn it and then teach it to me,” said Karen. Karen attended the Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Arnold Classic Africa 2017 sports weekend in Johannesburg recently and supported local athletes who took part. May is Lupus Awareness Month and Karen will be using the opportunity in Georgia to create awareness. Her mother, Elize Pieterse will accompany her to Georgia. Karen thanked the public for all the support. You can still keep on voting for her until 3 June by visiting http://www. pageantvote. net/ pageants/ 1136/ contestants/ 9529? voted= true You can also follow her by liking her page on Facebook, KG Fit by Karen Gräbe. - Jana Oosthuizen

Govan Mbeki Municipality will now name and shame businesses owing them money for electricity. According to Bheki Khubeka, Acting Head of Marketing and Communications of Govan Mbeki Municipality, the municipality is still in the continuous drive to collect all the municipal debs through the mayoral operation called KODIKO (a SeSotho phrase meaning collecting debts). The municipality warns the community of its intention to name and shame all businesses which are failing to honour their municipal debt. “The municipality will have no choice but to name and shame them in the local newspapers and all media platforms while it initiates court procedures to ensure the recouping of all monies due,” said Bheki. “This is an ongoing effort to ensure that the financial situation of the municipality improves and the debt of Eskom is eradicated through the paying of municipal services by the community. “Defaulting businesses are therefore encouraged to come forward and pay their municipal accounts in order to avoid being named and shamed.”

Hiér is Koekie Koekemoer. Vir meer inligting, skakel Venessa Erasmus by 082 824 0775.

- Jana Oosthuizen

Secunda rally

19 May 2017

Come on... lets rally, Secunda! This weekend is rally time in Secunda as local businesses join hands with the National rally Commission to present the third Secunda rally. Rallying is one of the most exciting sports to watch. There are few sights more thrilling than a rally car being launched sideways through a corner with the driver in complete control or with all four wheels off the ground as it flies over a hump. Which is why rallying is so popular with spectators. But where to watch? The start (TriSec Autohous in Trichardt) is a good place to begin your weekend, but you need to plan your travels carefully if you wish to see a lot of the special stage action. The spectator guide in on pages 6 and 7 gives you the ideal spectator points identified with clear directions to reach them, including GPS details. Some useful tips for spectators: Park your car safely out of the way and well off the road. Always stand in a recommended, safe place and obey any marshal who asks you to move. Don’t turn your back on the rally cars or stand on the outsider of a corner.

Ensure you have an escape route should a rally car come straight at you out of control. The service park (at the Makoro on the south bank of Lake Umuzi) is a great place to see the cars and the crews up close, to chat to the competitors and to see the service crews in action. Try not to get in their way. Some spectator points are worth staying at to watch most of the field pass through, but following the action is more fun and requires careful planning. If you want to see the leading cars several times during the day, you have to leave the stage after the first six or eight cars so that you can reach the next stage in time to see them again. Check the estimated start time of the first competitor at each stage – information you will find the spectator guide. It’s worth subscribing to the NRC stage-by-state SMS results service to keep up to date with the progress of the rally and see how your favourites are doing. Some rallies have roving commentators in vans with loudspeakers. For more information, contact info@ sarallying.co.za

A Super special stage will be held at Janneman van der Merwe’s farm Holfontein on Saturday morning. This stage pits two competitors together, side by side over a sort of figure of eight course. Unlike other stages, crews are permitted to walk the stage in advance. It’s really a short circuit race and allows the rally drivers with circuit racing experience to show off a bit.
