Court drops case against three The case against the three employees at the licensing offices was withdrawn by the court due to a lack of information. According to Capt S’fiso Nyakane of the Hawks, the court can place the case back on the roll again at any time. The three employees, Annelie Thompson, Thulile Nkonde and Ezekiel Mofokwane were arrested in October last year.
Annelie, a senior clerk, and Thulile, an examiner, were arrested on charges of fraud and corruption and Mofokwane was arrested on charges of being in possession of stolen property (license forms). The arrests were part of a multiprovincial investigation into fraud and corruption at different traffic departments. Residents have noticed since the
arrests that some of these employees are now back at work. According to MG Vuma, Senior Manager: Transport Administration and Licensing at the Provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, a person is not guilty until proven guilty and thus these employees are allowed to continue working. He also said the arrests took place
while the licensing office was still part of Govan Mbeki Municipality. The Department has taken over the licensing offices. “The employees were there when we took over the Department so we cannot conduct an investigation because the licensing office then still belonged to Govan Mbeki Municipality when these employees were arrested,” said MG.
Local artist reaches top 100 Local artist Louis Trichardt recently entered the prestigious Sanlam Portrait Awards 2017 and finished among the top 100 artists. The bi-annual award was hosted by Rust en Vrede Gallery this year and the theme was Portraiture. The Sanlam Portrait Awards are generally seen as the most prestigious Portrait Awards in the country, and is the only one of its kind. There is only one winner and everyone competes for the single prize of R100 000. A total of 1 430 entries were received from all corners of South Africa. Louis’ entry is currently on exhibition at the Michaelis Galleries at the University of Cape Town as part of the Sanlam Portrait Awards 2017 Portrait 100 exhibition. To make this achievement more remarkable is the fact that this was the first time that Louis has entered. The top 100 portraits are then subjected to another round of judging to select the final 40 from which the winner is chosen. Louis’ portrait titled Jacky, where are you? portrays the face of a woman staring into the yonder that leaves the viewer with the question: ‘What is she thinking?’ The portrait was painted in oil on a canvas panel and took four months to complete. A limited pallet of four colours was used. The model did not pose but rather a candid shot by Louis, in pleasing light, was used. This resulted in a natural clean pleasing portrait that
is characteristic of Louis’ work. “It is pleasing to know that Secunda’s art community, and Louis in particular, can compete with the rest of South Africa,” said Elmarie, owner of Mopani Photography and Framing. The Bulletin acquired one of Louis’ smaller works and framed it at Mopani Photography and Framing. One lucky reader can win this prize by answering the following question: Where is The Bulletin situated? SMS your answer and contact details to 33282. An SMS costs R1.50. Choose between 1. Lake Panic 2. Lake Umuzi 3. Lake Knysna. View the photo of the painting to be won on our website. Closing date for this competition is Monday, 4 September 2017 at 12:00.

Some residents lost their money when they paid what they thought were a deposit to rent a house into the bank account of a woman who claimed to be a rental agent. According to Anne-Lize Fick, owner of Seeff Secunda, the woman used photos of houses in Secunda and advertised these houses on OLX. “The so-called rental agent told

the clients who responded to her advertisement on OLX she does not live in Secunda and they must pay a deposit first so that she can know they are serious about renting,” said Anne-Lize. Some of these clients paid as much as R5 000 deposit. “The people then showed up at the houses after paying the deposits and realised it was a scam when the woman did not show up for the appointment.”
Cemetery mess:
When Seeff staff investigated, they found the advertisements on OLX were deleted. Anne-Lize urged residents who were scammed, to report it to the police. She said the woman advertised a 4-bedroom house with swimming pool for R5 000 per month. “If something sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true,” said Anne-Lize.

Bheki Khubeka, Head of Marketing and Communications, gave comment about the situation at the cemetery The Bulletin reported on last week. Bheki said: “The bottles found at the grave yard were cleared from the area of burials as part of litter picking around the graves. “They were placed at the position on your photos for people doing recycling to collect. “Other debris in the non-functioning toilets and fire made next to the building are the challenges that arise from vagrants. “We had planned to clean the site on Monday, 21 August however on arrival our team found that some unknown residents arrived on Saturday, 19 August to clean the place. We profusely thank them for their effort. “All the crosses that were removed and they are kept at Evander Bio Diversity and Open Spaces depot. “These were the crosses that were placed on the graves in contravention of the by-laws. “The owners are requested to collect them. “We rebuke very strongly the littering at the graveyard and thus appealing to the community to refrain from doing such and give the graveyard the dignity it deserves.”

Paul Charles motivates buisnesswomen Paul Charles had women in stiches at the Secunda branch of the South African Council for businesswomen (SACBW)’s function on Thursday evening at Boesies Restaurant. Paul said resilience is the power to bounce back. “A ball never bounces back to the same height it was thrown from,” said Paul. “Life is not as we always expect it to be. “Life is full of changes and your ability to adapt to these changes will make you successful or not. “The business you have today, is not guaranteed to still be there tomorrow. “I know one thing and that is how to adapt to change. “Everything I accomplished in my life, was because of a crisis happening to me. “We don’t have control over what happens to us in life, but we do have control over how we are going to react to it and how we are going to handle it.” Paul is the author of several books.
He wrote his first book as a bet and to proof to someone that he could write a book. His book was written years ago but was only published when South Africa reached junk status. “That book was written for a time of recession. “I waited 14 years for this opportunity and when the time came, my book was already written.” Paul was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago and doctors then said he only had about five months to live. He grew up in orphanages and with different foster parents because his parents were both alcoholics and could not take care of him and his nine siblings. “It doesn’t matter what happens to you, if you can bounce back higher, nobody can put a lid on you.” He suggested three things people should not do. Don’t compete with anyone.
Don’t compare yourself with others. Don’t complain. The SACBW Secunda branch hosts an event every second month and anyone interested are welcome to join them. They also take part in regular webinars and some of the topics includes the consumer act, stress relieve and budgeting. Their next event is on 21 October when Mavis Ureka will speak on the ABC’s of Emotions and Invest in your Child. Paul Charles was the motivational speaker at the South African Council for Businesswomen’s event held at Boesies on Thursday evening.
Zelda talks about photography Wyn-inni-Tyn kom nader Local photographer, Zelda Bezuidenhout, was the guest speaker at Secunda Mall’s Ladies Club breakfast at Symphony’s on Thursday. Zelda shared her favourite photos with the women and also gave some tips on photography. Her career in photography started with Petrus Saayman when she was his assistant, carried his bag and helped set up lights etcetera. She later proved herself as photographer and eventually bought over Petrus’ studio when he moved to Johannesburg. “My best tip for you is to practise,” said Zelda. “Sometimes changing your angle or perspective can make better photos.” Her favourite lighting to use is natural light. She suggested taking photos in the shade if you have to take photos at 13:00 when light is very harsh for photography. “Go on your knees when photographing children, get on their level. “Don’t just take photos of your family, set the camera’s self-timer and get into the photos yourself. “That will be precious memories for your children.” Secunda Mall Ladies Club’s next event will be in September.
Phindile Mtsweni, Miss Secunda Mall, also attended the Secunda Mall Ladies Club function on Thursday.

#6AM organisation gives back Lerato Shaun ‘Allan Keys’ started the #6AM charity organisation in 2008 when he and his friends decided to hand out food for Christmas. “I realised there was a big need and we gave people clothes as well,” said Lerato. He began giving motivational talks at schools and other organisations. “I talk about growing up with a disadvantaged background and not giving up. “Hard work, dedication and most importantly discipline pays off.” He also started a networking session for young entrepreneurs in 2014 and Lerato has since then seen companies such as Mankweng Holdings, Esitjeni Trading, Allan Keys Multimedia and Kwanda Photography grow. He was also the founding member of Inkaba Yomphakathi, a school initiative, that helps children with tutoring, mentoring and motivation.
For his birthday this year, Lerato told all his friends to buy shoes instead of presents for him and they donated 140 pairs of shoes to schools in eMbalenhle and surrounding areas. Another project #6AM did this year was to collect sanitary pads and donated it to needy girls in schools. “Some girls have never used pads before so we had to organise somebody to show them how to use it,” said Lerato. The group also helped a woman in Kinross to build a new shack after her shack burned down in June. A man died in the fire after he managed to save four children who were in the shack. #6AM’s goal for December this year, is to feed 150 hungry children and spoil them with a picnic and toys. Lerato works as a principal analyst and in his free time he collects items and food for #6AM.

Guy and Simon win Rally Championship The 5th round of the National Rally Championship took place at Bronkhorstspruit on Friday and Saturday, 18 and 19 August. The Rally proved to live up to the excitement normally associated with rallies and with more than 30 entries for the event, it was spectacular. The event was sponsored by first time sponsor, Electrothread. It is exciting to see new sponsors committing to rally as a sport in South Africa. The crowd turned up in huge numbers despite the biting cold that had the whole country in its grip. Dusty roads and the wind did not make it easy for both drivers and
spectators, but the spectators were treated to heated contests between the drivers. The return of Hergen Fekken, twotime SA Rally Drivers Champion, to the NRC contributed to the excitement. The fact that Hergen teamed up with multiple co-driver champion, Elvene Coetzee meant that they were going to be a force to be reckoned with. This was confirmed when they finished second overall. Guy Botteril and co-driver Simon Vacy-Lyle, had their work cut out for them but managed to secure a win with a 10 second lead. Richard Leeke Jnr and co-driver Henry Kohne took

the third spot, 19 seconds behind the leader. The classic car winners were Roelof Coertse with co-driver Barry White, Pierre de Clerq and Mauritz Britz finished second while Natie Booysen and Leslie Mackensie finished third. Rory Eland and Erwee Badenhorst took top honours in the open class with Etienne Lourens and Matt Kohler finishing second. Jaco Baker and George Baker finished third. Richard Leeke Jnr and Henry Kohne won the Regional Rally. Rory Eland and Erwee Badenhorst finished second while AC Potgieter
and Nico Swartz finished third. It is interesting to note that no fewer than 11 women took part in the HMC Electrothread Rally; four drivers and seven co-drivers. There were two all-women teams with both the driver and co-driver being women. The women certainly proved their worth with good finishes. The Rally was well-organised and enjoyed by the large crowd, although the dust made it very challenging. The next rally will be held in Caledon, Western Cape on 22 and 23 September and the next Regional Rally will be on 7 October at Lake Umuzi. - Encee van Huyssteen
