Sasol responds to pollution report Highveld killing fields Sasol notes the contents of the Centre for Environmental Rights’ Broken Promises report. Sasol remains committed to transparency and engagement with key stakeholders on environmental matters and in this spirit we confirm that we have ongoing engagement with, for example, the Centre for Environmental Rights, specifically on air quality matters. To the extent that there is reference to Sasol and its air quality compliance approach in the report, we submit that our position is formally recorded in our Annual Integrated Report and Sustainability Report, and is reiterated in our responses below. The respective links to these reports are: http://www. sasol.com/investor-centre/financialreporting/annual-integrated-report/ latestand http://www.sasol.com/ investor-centre/financial-reporting/ sustainable-development-report/latest. Sasol is committed to compliance with all applicable laws including air quality laws. This supports sustainable air quality improvements as envisaged through the Air Quality Act and priority area air quality management plans, in the interests of all stakeholders, including the communities within which we operate. This is imperative in achieving the objectives of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (“NEMAQA”) to ensure an environment that is not harmful to health and wellbeing. We have continuously made improvements in reducing our environmental footprint over the years, consistent with the intent of evolving environmental legislation. We have, for the most part, voluntarily invested more than R25 billion over the past 12 years on projects delivering environmental improvements at our
operations in South Africa. We assess the quality of ambient air near our Secunda and Sasolburg facilities on an ongoing basis against the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, which were informed by the World Health Organisation’s guidelines, to be protective of human health. This informs our understanding of our associated ambient impacts, and consequently our investment priorities. Sasol owns and operates accredited ambient air quality monitoring stations. This information is submitted into the South African Air Quality Information System (SAAQIS) as per the requirement of the Department of Environmental Affairs. We have consistently stated that Sasol’s emissions, under normal operating conditions, do not cause exceedances of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, as confirmed by independent air pollution assessments supporting our postponement applications. These assessments are independently compiled by specialist consultants and are furthermore independently peer reviewed. These assessments have identified that a significant concern in the vicinity of our plants is high ambient concentrations of particulate matter (including smoke), especially evident during winter as a result of domestic coal burning and other activities like waste burning. Our approved offset plans, as required by the postponement decisions, address these challenges specifically. Our offset projects were developed based on the known challenges articulated for example, in the Highveld Priority area air quality management plan. They have been designed to reduce emissions
resulting from activities like veld fires and coal or wood burning used for home heating in cold winter months in the communities of eMbalenhle and Lebohang. These plans were approved earlier this year, and we are on track with implementation. We continue to support offsets as a meaningful, complementary lever to improve ambient air quality. We have consistently communicated that we already meet most of the Minimum Emissions Standards (MES) for existing plants, and will also be able to meet most of the new plant standards by approximately 2025. This will enable an extended timeframe within which to safely implement the necessary abatement technologies in accordance with our roadmap schedules. In this regard, we will be reliant on further postponements, as provided for in law. In the interim, our licences contain stretched targets under which we operate. We continue to progress our committed air quality improvement roadmaps, with, for example, our boiler plant particulate matter levels being consistently below applicable licence limits. We are committed and are making an ongoing effort to advancing our air quality improvement roadmaps. We have and continue to transparently engage with the applicable authorities and stakeholders on challenges in the interest of sustainable ambient air quality improvement. In the interest of transparency, we refer you to details of our postponement applications, the independent air pollution assessments and our associated roadmaps, available from http://www.srk.co.za/en/za-sasolpostponements.

Increase in accidents are alarming A recent increase in motor vehicle accidents, of which many has been fatal, has been reported in the Bulletin. The latest incident claimed 4 lives on Sunday morning. When using the road in either a car or on a motorcycle, bike or even as a pedestrian, applying the following method may save your life and that of other road users. When driving, first OBSERVE what you see on the road or next to the road, pedestrians, cyclists or other vehicles. IDENTIFY what you have observed. A pedestrian walking on the left-hand pavement away from you. A car coming towards you from the front. A car standing at the stop sign on your right. PREDICT what they will do. Predict whether the pedestrian will walk off the
side walk in front of the car. Will the car be approaching from the front veer into your lane? Will the car at the stop sign pull away into the crossing? DECIDE what action you are going to take if the pedestrian walks in front of your car, can you stop or will you be able to pass him safely. Decide what to do about the car coming from the front should he veer into your lane. Can you stop or pass to the left or right. If the car at the stop sign pull off, will you be able to stop in time, pass safely on the right or left without compromising other road users. EXECUTE the action you decided upon for the particular decision you made. Be sure to operate your vehicle in such a manner that you will have enough time and space to execute your decision.

Protest action turns violent A meeting Sunday morning at the eMbalenhle Stadium about the electricity supply turned violent earlier Sunday afternoon. Residents left the stadium in an angry mob. They were extremely unhappy about the Eskom power cuts. The residents demanded answers from Govan Mbeki Municipality. They wanted to know why the council did not pay Eskom and what GMM did with the money. Residents started protesting directly after the meeting. They told the taxi drivers that there will be a stay-away on Monday. Protesters immediately began barricading the roads in eMba. The protest moved to the Secunda/ Standerton intersection where rocks were placed in the road and tyres set alight. A maroon Toyota Avansa was set alight and the driver and occupant assaulted. They were transported to a nearby hospital. It is alleged that the driver did not respond to the protesters earlier in the day when told to take another route. It is also alleged that the driver hit a pedestrian shortly before being assaulted. He tried to drive away and drove at a high speed over the rocks nearly crashing into the protesters according to a bystander. “They will force GMM, by all necessary means, to sort out Eskom,” said Phindile Sibande. eMbalenhle looked like a war zone on Monday morning. Smoke was billowing up everywhere as protesters began burning tyres and other rubble in the
roads and barricading the roads with large rocks and road signs. The protesters threatened to move to Evander and Kinross to burn down the Mayor’s house, but that was averted. No marches towards neighbouring towns took place at the time of writing this article. Protesters set the municipal offices alight in eMbalenhle Ext 8, 4 and 17. Municipal vehicles has also been set alight. Photos send by public indicate that a dump truck and several cars were completely burned out. Some protesters threatened The Bulletin’s reporter when he took photos and videos of the morning’s protests. A small delivery vehicle tried to evade the obstructions in the road and had to drive through the veld to safety as the protesters pelted it with rocks. Most of the protesters were small children that should still be at school. Taifa Joint that belonged to the previous municipal manager, Mmela Mahlangu, was torched and burned to the ground. The Bulletin received notice at midday from Eskom that Govan Mbeki Municipality have paid the minimum amount required to enable negations to take place. GMM has repeatedly defaulted on previous payment agreements and have even admitted that they lied to Eskom just to buy time. The Mayor said on Ikwekwezi FM that GMM managed to pay R51M on Monday morning, resulting in the suspension of cut offs. In response to The Bulletin’s question
as to why certain areas are affected and not the whole of GMM, Eskom replied that GMM has separate accounts with Eskom for Evander and Kinross. eMbalenhle, Bethal, Secunda (that supplies Trichardt) and eMzinoni are linked to one account which is in arrears due to the municipality’s failure to pay its accounts. The decision on which account to pay, lies with the municipality and Eskom cannot dictate which accounts should be paid. “This is a sad lesson the mayor hopefully learned,” says DA Caucus leader, Cllr Encee van Huyssteen. “We have been offering help, giving advice and warned them of this catastrophe, but the ANC chose to disregard all warnings. Now we are in serious trouble financially and no way out. The Mayor keeps on pushing for smart meter for consumers that are paying their accounts instead of addressing the real problems. Smart meters work on airtime according to the Vodacom presentation and we will have to pay that also,” states Encee. “Clearly the lack of commitment from GMM and their inability to resolve the Eskom issue is now starting to become a huge problem for the residents of GMM, putting a lot of lives at risk.” Several groups have vowed not to stop their actions to get this municipality back on track. It is a pity that some people resorted to violence to try and have their voices heard.

The breed to which we are dedicated A Bulldog is first and foremost loyal. This noble breed has a strong determination and knows exactly how to get what they want. Bulldogs are not people pleasers they are more human like, and they will do what they want, when they want. Therefore, bulldogs must be trained differently than other breeds. Bulldogs makes excellent family pets as their thick skin and lazy nature makes them ideal to have around children. The breed generally prefers to be in the company of children. They will give you hours of laughter and cuddles that you can never resist. Everyone talks about their snoring, but once you had a bulldog you can’t fell asleep without it. It’s horrible for people that don’t know it, but the snoring is a soothing sound to bulldog owners. They prefer to stay
indoors and always close to their family companions. The Bulldog is the most popular breed in South Africa. Sadly, there are many breeders that are not dedicated to breed healthy dogs - as many bulldog owners have discovered. Those dogs live short and painful lives... It is thus important to do your research before buying a new family member. Showing Showing your bulldog is a lot of fun. You will find many people who share your love for the bulldog. At the show you can proudly showcase your pride and joy that is up to the standard, remembering that there is no perfect dog and never will be, and you can only strive to get close to it. Join the bulldog clubs in your area and enjoy the fun that comes with it.

Secunda Nav Rally enjoyed by All
(photo’s by Willie Bodenstein)
By Rob Jonkers The South African Power Flying Association (SAPFA) together with the Secunda Flying Club organised an extremely successful Navigation Fun Rally on Saturday 30 September. Under the stewardship of SAPFA’s Chairman Jonty Esser who, with Sandy Goddard, planned and plotted the course and training activities, and together with Christoff le Grange, the Club’s Chairman, a total of 12 entrants took part in the rally. The Secunda club invited other clubs in the region to partake, as well with a best club prize also up for grabs, and this year Ermelo and Springs also attended. Jonty arranged for a training session for all those who could attend
Vacancy
on the Friday evening, so as to give guidance on how to plot and fly a rally, and provided the plot for the next day. The first aircraft departed just after 10:00 on a route that was mostly to the south towards the Standerton area, with not much in the way of ground features to follow, the winter grass and fields together with the dirt roads making the landscape without much contrast to see the map and photo features easily. In the fun rally rules, each turning point has a 15 second window to cross over to attain zero penalty points with a mile wide gate to go through, and along the route around 18 photographs had to be recognised and located on the map, this year being a lot more difficult than in the previous year where one short leg had 4 photos within half a nautical mile of each other, with other
legs also having multiple photos to recognise. The weather was quite hazy with wind at around 10 kts, making the navigation exercise somewhat challenging to be able to see in the far field, with the wind gradient at least manageable and not too turbulent. After returning to the field, joining on a long final approach for Runway 11 a spot landing had to be carried out with lines fairly close to the threshold, and with good conditions to land, the scores did not reflect as such, and one of the Slings taking part did a wheelbarrow landing as well, at least a video taken at the landing line could be shown afterwards on how not to try and force a landing. After all the scores were tallied, the prize-giving ceremony was held inside the hangar next to the clubhouse,
Secunda Club Chairman Christoff le Grange with his wife Zine
where the first three places and prizes went to JP Swart and Jan Jacobz who were in 1st place with a total of 65 penalty points, Johan van Eeden and Cor Esterhuizen were in 2nd place with 100 penalty points and Riaan Kamffer and Jaco Groenewald were in 3rd place with 212 penalty points. Each of the three clubs taking part were in the top 3 showing the competition was stiff between them. This year, Ermelo Flying Club took the club prize. A live track event on Google Earth was also set-up, and with sufficient time, 7 of the 12 entrants were tracked, and could be watched on the ground by spectators in the event hangar, and at least these 7 all had very good tracks. There was only one unlimited entrant, that of Rob Jonkers and Martin Meyer scoring 70 points under unlimited rules of a 2 second window at each turning point. This event was for sure enjoyed by all, some entrants never having flown a rally before, getting an understanding of flying with more precision, especially in the slower flight regime, as well as getting accuracy in landing within a few metres. Everybody is look forward to Secunda Flying Club organising a rally again next year, and gathering more clubs in the region to take part.

Bulletin
End of the road for Sasol Hydra-Arc
Sasol Hydra Arc has crashed out of the Gold Cup competition when QBR beat them by 58-20 at the Harlequins Club in Pretoria. The half time score was 26-6. On a day that Sasol lacked that spark that brought them to the quarter finals, QBR showed what this competition was all about - playing rugby! QBR scored their first try early in the game when bad defences allowed them to score in the corner. QBR opened the backline defences on a regular basis and scored with regularity. The cross defences were lacking on the side of Sasol that cost them dearly, as well as lacklustre tackles that allowed QBR to pass the ball as they wished. QBR’s ball handling skills impressed with even the forwards expecting at least one player behind him to pass the ball to. The good handling of the ball, as well as the fast passing is a lesson that Sasol can take home and learn from it. The Sasol team, that Secunda came to know over this past
year, is capable of mastering those skills to the level of QBR, and if they do, they will surely progress even further in next year’s competition. A huge concern should be the lineouts of Sasol Rugby Club’s teams. Only two own lineouts were won. QBR capitalised on the weak line outs and started movements that resulted in tries from there. Own lineouts have to be won if a team wants to retain possession. No team can score without the ball. There were no real plan to counter the drives initiated by the forwards from QBR. Pure determination from Sasol kept the forward drives a little in check. There were at least one try scored from the forward drives. At times it looked as if Sasol is going to bounce back just to sink back and let QBR dictate the game. There were times of brilliance, though, such as the drop goal by Fanie Booysen in the early stages of the game. It looked as if the Sasol that we know were back for the last 15 minutes, but
by then it was just too late. It would be nature to dwell on the loss after such a successful season, but The Bulletin wants to point out that it has been quite a journey to here. Sasol Hydra-Arc only suffered two losses the whole season. They ended in the top 8 clubs in South Africa. They have drawn people back to the pavilions. And they have made the people of Mpumalanga proud to have a club such as Sasol Hydra-Arc Rugby Club in Mpumalanga. Congratulations from The Bulletin on a good season. We are proud of You!
