Rape and murder: #AmINext
T
he shock of the brutal rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl in eMzinoni rattled a community this past week. The girl was allegedly sent to the shop by neighbours and when she did not return, the search for her started late on Sunday afternoon, 8 September. A passer-by found her in the early hours of Monday morning, 9 September and informed the family. The family reported the case to the police. A suspect was identified and will appear in Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 17 September. On Thursday, 12 September, a community member informed The Bulletin that the family needed help with the funeral. The Bulletin immediately placed an advertisement on our Facebook page. The community responded positively and donated food and money to help with the funeral, as is customary. The Bulletin also visited the family on Friday, 13 September and was met by a heart-breaking scene; a family torn apart. Even though the community stepped up, assisted and supported the family, the raw pain was palpable. Cllr Brenda Mahlangu from the ANC released the following statement: “On behalf of Ward 23, I would like to condemn the raping and killing of the young girl that took place last week. This came as a big shock to us. This is a very barbaric act and we call for justice to prevail and grant the perpetrator a maximum sentence which should not be less than life imprisonment. Killing of innocent women and children can never be tolerated in our Ward and it shall stop right now. We thank the police for swiftly acting to arrest the perpetrator. On Tuesday, 17 September, we’re having a peaceful march against gender-based violence starting at the township. We will converge at Raymond Mavuso Community Hall at 7:30am. We are saying the perpetrator must not be granted bail.” Cllr Angel Khanyile, DA MP, also released the following statement: “We would like to send our condolences to the family. We would also like to thank the community for standing together and taking a stand in fighting gender-based violence. We need more men to champion the issues of gender-based violence. In most of these cases men are the perpetrators. We need men to take a stand and raise their voices. They should also be counted among the countless people who are against gender-based violence. We want to see the men on the ground as well when we march to the courts and to different places as we try to curb gender-based violence. SAPS need more support from the
https://www.cbn.co.za/ featured/capetonians-standagainst-gender-basedviolence/ government to assist in their cases. The government has to ensure there are enough resources for SAPS to do their investigations etc. properly. The government also has to ensure and instil trust. They need to come back to the people and give assurance that they are assisting in this fight against gender-based violence.” The ongoing violence against women and children has been the talk of the country the last month. In Cape Town people marched to parliament in protest and were addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. They all asked different questions, but the hashtag #AMINEXT took the internet by storm. Some of the protesters carried posters with the words: “Enough is enough!” and “The only thing I am guilty of is having a vagina.” President Ramaphosa cancelled his engagements at the World Economic Forum to show his support of this movement. This protest was the biggest in the history of Cape Town. He informed the crowd that there was a plan to stop gender-based violence and this plan was centred around “strengthening the judicial system.” The President further reiterated: “Men who do all these things do not belong in society. All these measures I will respond to. We are going to
strengthen the criminal judicial system. We are going to intervene and ensure government increases aid for the shelters, we want the shelters to increase and be properly funded.” It is all well and good that the President is trying and helping in this very sensitive case that has brought the country to a standstill, but the fact remains that there is still a culture of tolerance towards violence and the abuse of women and children amongst us. The Bulletin spoke to men and some made the following statement: “It is accepted that a woman deserves to be raped.” A source revealed that recently in one of the schools in GMM, there was a debate between the students regarding this subject. When the Gr. 11 boy realised that he was not going to win the argument, he told the girls they all deserved to be raped! In order for the country to stand up against gender-based violence and femicide, one must look at culture. In South Africa we are one, but cultures differ. When The Bulletin was in eMzinoni some men gave some insight into what they believed was the reason behind the rape culture: “In some cultures, it is acceptable that, should a boy like a girl, he can just take her. Her father will receive a letter that states she is safe and asks how much
Lobola he wants, or he’ll be visited by the boy’s father or uncles to resolve the negotiations. This girl/woman will then be forced to have sex with the boy/man until she carries his child or submits to him.“ There are many other cultures in South Africa that condone the ill treatment of women. Boys are brought up with the false confidence that they can have and take whatever they want. The fact that President Ramaphosa is taking steps to put a stop to this is encouraging, but as long as there is a rape culture and it is acceptable and allowed, nothing will change. Change starts with us and our children are the future. Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders and by ensuring that they are well educated and wellinformed kick starts a much-needed change in society as a whole. It is appalling that the death of our women and children has only now started to open people’s eyes to the brutality of rape and murder being committed. The saddest part is that, in this mayhem of gender-based violence, children are the ones that suffer the most. On Tuesday, 17 September women will march from eMzinoni to the Bethal magistrate’s court where the suspect will appear. Ané Prinsloo

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) hereby seeks assistant from the public who might have knowledge of the whereabouts of Cannon Mohammed Phiri (35) and Sandile Mashazi (35) who are sought on two unrelated fraud cases. It is alleged that in June 2015, a victim was deceitfully made to pay half of R 524 000 as capital for operating costs of a non-existent multimillion-rand tender to supply water pipes to the Polokwane Municipality. Phiri reportedly disappeared soon after receiving the money, a warrant for his arrest was issued on 9 September. Meanwhile, on the matter implicating Mashazi, in May 2018, it is alleged that Sandile Mashazi, Johannes Mahlangu (38) and Aaron Mokoena (40) were arrested after they allegedly stole a victim’s bank card at a Leslie ATM in Mpumalanga whilst she was withdrawing money. The suspects later withdrew R5 000 from the victim’s account. They were traced and arrested by local detectives and subsequently appeared at court where they were released on R3 000.00 bail each, the matter was later withdrawn. In July 2018, the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation were enlisted to conduct further investigation and on 23 August 2018, the accused were summoned to appear in court where only Mahlangu and Mokoena attended. It is alleged the SBV security guards
were loading cash into an auto teller machine when they were suddenly confronted by an unknown number of heavily armed suspects wearing uniforms similar to theirs. The crew was forced to open the armoured vehicle vault while being threatened with explosives. One crew member was shot in the process and the trolley man was shot twice, he survived the attack. The suspects fled the scene using a Silver Toyota and an Etios taking along the truck’s keys. Information received will be treated with the strictest confidentially.
15 Year jail term meted out to murderer The Breyten High Court has on 4 September sentenced 31-year-old Sibusiso Brian Ntuli to 15 years imprisonment for murder. On 17 June 2018, Ntuli stabbed his girlfriend, who was 31 at the time, at Phola Park in Piet Retief. He ran away after the incident and went into hiding. The next day, police followed up on information about his whereabouts and Ntuli was swiftly arrested. Ntuli made his first appearance on 2 September and pleaded guilty to the murder of his girlfriend. He was remanded in custody and appeared again on the day of the sentencing. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has welcomed the sentencing and applauded the members for their excellent work in making sure that the perpetrator is brought to book. He further appreciated the collaboration between the National Prosecution Authority and the Department of Justice who made it possible that the accused is jailed.
Suspects to reappear for formal bail application Five men, aged between 23 and 34, were expected to make a second appearance at the Komatipoort Periodical Court on 13 September for a formal bail application having appeared at the same court on 11 September on a charge of possession of stolen motor vehicles. On Tuesday, 10 September, police received information about a suspicious vehicle roaming around town in Komatipoort. They speedily followed up on the information, leading the police to a guesthouse nearby. Upon arrival the officers found a lot of vehicles which were parked. As the police were about to enquire, the drivers and occupants of the vehicles started fleeing, but the police managed to arrest 3 suspects and confiscated a total of five vehicles, three which were driven by the arrested suspects: a Toyota Land Cruiser bakkie, an Isuzu Double Cab bakkie and a Toyota Rav4. A short probe revealed that three cars were allegedly stolen in Gauteng. Later on in the day police received information again about possible suspected stolen vehicles, an Isuzu bakkie and a one tonner truck along the N4 and at Lebombo Border Post respectively. They moved swiftly and arrested an additional two suspects. The Provincial Commissioner has welcomed the arrest of the suspects and applauded the diligence of the

Provincial commissioner condemns acts of looting of shops The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, strongly condemns the acts of criminality that took place in Witbank at the Central Business District (CBD) on 11 September where several shops, owned by foreign nationals, were looted. This resulted in the arrest of six suspects, including the alleged mastermind. Several stolen items were also recovered. The incident which was captured on video and has since gone viral. The video shows several members of the community fleeing from a certain shop with stolen items. The police moved swiftly and diffused the situation before it escalated due to a contingency plan which was put in place as a control measure to supress a possible outbreak of similar incidents within the province. Police stations have been given a strict mandate to conduct intensive visible patrols in all areas but also prioritise and monitor the areas with a large number of foreign owned shops. The Crime Intelligence Unit has also been roped in to gather information on possible threats so that members on the ground can be deployed accordingly. There are also engagements taking place at local level between the police and representatives of the foreign owned businesses. Furthermore, Sector Managers have also been activated to stay alert at all times. The police in Mpumalanga urge the community not to participate in such criminal acts but report them to the police instead. The suspects were expected to appear on 13 September at the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of stolen property, theft as well as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). An investigation into their involvement in the looting of foreign owned shops is currently underway. In light of this incident, General Zuma has warned that such acts of criminality will not be tolerated and further urges people to act responsibly and obey the law at all times.

Sam Holdings mixed public response Facebook users had mixed feelings about Sam Chabalala, Sam Holdings director and owner. The Facebook posts were inundated with calls of support and those that were asking for heads to roll. Sam, who was arrested over a week ago on suspicions that he acquired his South African identity fraudulently, appeared in court on Monday for a formal bail hearing. He also faces charges of fraud, bribery and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The Bulletin received the following statement from the Hawks Spokesperson Captain Sekgotodi: “Sambulo Bruce Chabalala (23) was granted R200 000.00 bail by the Witbank Magistrate Court on Monday 16 September with the following bail conditions: The accused was instructed to report at the Bethal Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 09:00 and 12:00. To hand his travelling documents to the investigating officer and further not to leave his area which is Govan Mbeki Municipality without notifying the investigating officer. On the other hand, the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit took over the Murder case of Sam Holdings General Manager Nkosinathi Emmanuel Ngcongo (30), who was shot and killed last week Thursday 12 September while he was on duty at Sam Holdings truck depot. It is alleged that two men were seen entering the premises whereby one of the suspects produced a firearm and shot Ngcongo and disappeared. Later the same night
the investigation led to the arrest of a 26-years-old Phindokuhle Eugene Nkosi. Nkosi appeared at the Bethal Magistrate Court on the Friday, 13 September. His case is remanded to 19 September for further investigation and possible bail application. The suspect remanded in custody. The investigation continues.” He was arrested on Friday at a restaurant at Emalahleni’s Highveld Mall after an alleged attempt to pay home affairs officials R40,000 “to destroy reports of a fraudulently obtained South African identity document against him,” said the Hawks. The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation unit swooped in on him shortly afterwards and found an unlicensed firearm in his vehicle, a green Mercedes-Benz, one of many luxury cars he owns. Most South Africans had never heard of the young millionaire until he became the face of a flashy convoy of supercars that travelled to the Durban July this year. At the time, The Citizen reported that “Mshengu” was a Mpumalanga-based businessman who set tongues wagging after having the longest convoy at the event, boasting top-of-the-range cars, with many asking how he had made his money. Of the 72 cars, 10 were his. Claiming to be born in Makwarela, Venda, he opened up on radio in July about his difficult upbringing and how he eventually made it in the logistics business. He registered his company, Sam Holdings Trading, in 2014 and used his
boss’ trucks to start his business. “I got a contract even when I didn’t have a truck at the time. I took my boss’ trucks and registered them. I was getting a commission of R10 at the time. I worked for a long time and raised money to buy my own truck. I could make R300,000 a month with commission and salary at the time.” He kept working and saving money until it got to R3 million. He used the money to buy three trucks and trailers cash. “Now I have 52 trucks running on the road with machines and plant hire. That’s how I made my money. I’ve never been involved in anything illegal. I do transport with Eskom, but I’m also venturing into mining now with my own mine. It’s all my mind and planning and the mercy of God,” he said. There is further twist to his story. The Sowetan reported the following: “A manager at one of flamboyant businessman Sam “Mshengu” Chabalala’s depots was shot dead just days after he gave the Hawks a sworn affidavit relating to an investigation about his boss. Nkosinathi Ngcongo, 30, was shot in the head and chest as he was about to leave the premises in Bethal, Mpumalanga, on Thursday. Police spokesperson Const Thomas Mogadime said one person has been arrested for Ngcongo’s murder and will appear in court soon on murder charges. But police would not say whether Ngcongo’s killing was linked to Chabalala’ s arrest.
Man escapes death after hit and run A man who makes his living by washing taxis at Evander taxi rank narrowly escaped death after he was run over by a taxi on the R546 a few kilometres from the extension 12 four way stop. According to the eyewitness who spoke to The Bulletin, but wishes to remain anonymous as she was a passenger on the taxi, they were shocked by the heartless taxi driver from Vukanini taxi association (Vukta) who was driving the taxi from Secunda to eMbalenhle on the afternoon of Thursday, 12 September when he ran over a man and did not even stop to check the condition of the pedestrian. Even after passengers asked him to stop and check on the pedestrian, he continued driving away. A call came through on a (Govan Mbeki traffic alert) WhatsApp group of a hit and run accident on the R546 (Shukushukuma). Emergency personnel and the police rushed to the scene and upon arrival they found a man lying on the side of the road. Fortunately, he was conscious. He sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised before transported to hospital. He told The Bulletin that he was coming from work in Evander. He disembarked from a taxi. He was trying to cross the road when a taxi that was driving at high speed in the yellow lane ran him over. Another R546 tragedy is that a man died when he was run over by a vehicle at around 02h15 on Saturday morning, 14 September. A call came through of a pedestrian and vehicle accident (PVA) and when the police arrived, they found a man lying
on the side of the road. Emergency personnel declared the person dead on the scene. According to the driver of the vehicle he was driving when a man from nowhere crossed the road
and it was too late for him to stop. No one could tell where the man was coming from at that time of the night. An inquest docket was opened. Sandile Mkhwanazi
A source close to the investigation, however, confirmed to Sowetan that Ngcongo had met the Hawks as part of their investigations. “He made an affidavit under oath. We are investigating a hit. He was very close to the businessman,” the insider said.” The story continues to unfold as the investigation continues. - Encee van Huyssteen (- The Sowetan - The Citizen)

Asof sy sintuie hulle aanslag op sy gemoed wil versterk, begin Neil Diamond in sy kop dreun: “Well I’m New York born and raised/but nowadays I’m lost between two shores/LA’s fine but it ain’t home/ New York is mine but it ain’t home no more/I am I said/ to no one there.” Mooi storie, dink hy. Soet, nostalgiese stories.
Soms hartseer, soms bitter, meestal mooi. Vele daarvan ongeskryf. Gister se verhale is goed, dit is mooi. Sy eerste vraag was: “waar is my boek?”
Hy is inderdaad “nowadays…lost between two shores”, soos Neil Diamond sing.

Stop gender-based violence
#AMINEXT ? This is the biggest question women across South Africa have been asking themselves judging from the senseless and brutal killings
of women and children. The list of victims is endless. Women are being kidnapped, raped and killed according to the Minister of
police’s recently released statistics. What is even more shocking is the increasing number of women that are being raped and killed. This is what made Miss Mpumalanga finalist, Lucia Mabunda, say enough is enough with women being victimised in our country and communities. That was the theme when the Lucia Mabunda Foundation hosted an event in eMbalenhle at the Family Worship church in extension 12 on Saturday morning, 14 September. eMbalenhle community members and Kiriyatswane school children attended the event and Rising star Television filmed the event. People were marching in the streets of eMbalenhle raising awareness. They came across a fight between a lady and her boyfriend. The argument was started by her boyfriend. He told his girlfriend that he wanted to marry another woman. That incident is clearly an indication that women are
The “Lake Umuzi – SADFA – “Two Comma Four” There are only 8 days left to wait to be a participant in the “Lake Umuzi – SADFA – “Two Comma Four” also known as Ops. Jagarend. The utilising of September 24 for this occasion is anchored in Heritage Day, the heritage of the legacy of the soldier. Those who had paid the ultimate price for the freedom we now enjoy, let there be no oversight that combatants from both sides of the conflict took part in this struggle. The “Two Comma Four” was part and
parcel of the training, the discipline and the fitness achieved during those days. Reliving this event by staging the walk for the second year the “Lake Umuzi – SADFA – “Two Comma Four.” This will be a fun walk, some with their K9 friends, some with family and kids, a walk around the peaceful Lake Umuzi. Starting at the Artisans Square, all along the edge of the lake, towards a turning point where the participant’s skills in “Kettie Skiet” and the throwing of practice grenades will be tested and
then returning to the end line. Each participant that successfully complete the “Two Comma Four” will receive a medal and a certificate. An event to be enjoyed by all. – Aart Reedijk

being abused not only physically, but also emotionally. “What is more important is also to educate our young boys about the importance of respecting women in our society, because we can call men all sorts of names but it won’t change until people go back to God and pray for this country. It is clear that this is not a matter of flesh and blood, but it is a spiritual thing. We need God more than anything,” said Lucia Mabunda. The foundation also raised funds. They are partners with the Mpumalanga Association of People with Disability, an organisation that helps people in the society who need wheelchairs. One of the speakers of the day, Mrs Conny Ntshane, a Mental Illness Activist, said: “It ends now but it will begin with one person being more vocal about such instances, because so many people do not stand up for their rights. They think it is normal to be abused by a man where it is not.” Women must join hands and be open about these things. It begins with you. - Sandile Mkhwanazi

The platform is called Sasol For Good, which our Employee Volunteering Programme that leverages the considerable and diverse abilities and expertise of Sasol employees to empower communities.” “For the past seven years, Sasol has participated in the Casual Day campaign to support persons with disabilities. Today, three of the organisations around our operations will benefit from that exercise. The money received from Sasol and its employees, a sum of R40 000.00 that will be distributed equally between Kristopher Ryan and Osizweni.” “In closing, I would like to encourage us all with the words of the father of our nation, Tata Nelson Mandela and I quote: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” So, let’s continue to work together to do so,” said Rethabile Ndjibu. – Aart Reedijk FLTR: Pam Kotze (Cntr. To the Editor Robert has been working for me for many years. This man is what I like to call “a plant whisperer.” Not only is he that, but his green fingers have been transforming gardens for many years. I would like to thank him and give him the recognition he deserves. Robert works hard and whatever he touches turns into the most amazing array of colourful flowers one can almost compare to the Namaqualand flowers. “Spring is here and now everything is starting to flower. You can see our Clivias look beautiful in our garden this time of the season. We have spread them all over under the big thorn tree. Because they need to grow in the shade, in a cool place and they also make seedlings. They make new seedlings each year. I like it when my gardens have colourful flowers in them,” said Robert. - Avid Reader
Operation Kolgans monthly breakfast
The monthly Ops. Kolgans from Unit Bandwacht was held on Saturday at the Kruik Café in Secunda. Several members attended this
get-together of fellow veterans, to enjoy a few hours collectively with wives and children. It too was an occasion to welcome Lt. Encee van Huyssteen as a member of unit Brandwacht, his certificate was handed to him by Cosmos Sector 1’s chairperson. We have placed several articles and photos regarding the work of the South African Defence Force Association (SADFA) this past year and therefore wish to inform our readers of the philosophy behind the SADFA veterans’ organisation. The South African Defence Force Association (SADFA) was founded on 14 February 2009 to act in the interest of all old members who rendered a service during the existence of the Union Defence Force (UDF) in 1964
and the of the existence of the SA Defence Force (SADF) in 1994 and the SANDF after 1994. This includes members who served as National Servicemen, in the Commandos, in the Reserve Force and the Permanent Force. Members in uniform as well as civilians who served in the SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Navy and the SA Health Service qualify to join as Full Members As set out in the Constitution, SADFA undertakes amongst other things: ~ to act in the interest of all our members and to promote the interests of our members within and outside of the Association. So that: “Veterans Creating the Future” The Association is managed by our National Executive Council (NEC) which is elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Join SADFA and be part of a Unit in your area and work on different projects to make your community a better place. – Aart Reedijk

Oosterland Tattoo entertained everyone
Hoërskool Oosterland would like to thank Westvaal Isuzu Secunda for the bakkie! The bakkie will be taking the trailer with all the instruments to Durban next week for the South African Championships. The sounds of marching bands have fascinated people for a very long time. Trumpets and other instruments blaring sounds into the air on the rhythm of snare and base drums always draw crowds to the occasion. Oosterland hosted their annual Tattoo on Saturday. It was a splendid affair!
The evening started with drum majorettes from Laerskool Kruinpark and Laerskool Secunda. Dancers from the Oosterland Revue and the Oosterland Band Dance Girls also entertained the crowd. The real reasons for the Tattoo proved to be of high calibre. The Springs Boy’s
Dinamiese Dano
Dié spreek boekdele oor Dano se toewyding as leerder by Oosterland.
High Drumline and the HS Oosterland Drumline captivated the crowd with intriguing rhythms and moves. The two bands, Springs Boys’ High Marching Band and Hoërskool Oosterland Marsorkes, played popular songs whilst marching and moving to the rhythms. The evening ended with a
combined band playing. Hoërskool Oosterland Marsorkes will compete in the South African Championships in a few days and The Bulletin would like to wish them all the best. We are confident that they will make Secunda and in particular Hoërskool Oosterland proud.
Girls’ soccer tournament
Both teams advanced to the final after Rising Stars eliminated Tomorrow Star’s from Gate 7, eMbalenhle. We are very honoured to protect and keep the kids away from streets through soccer. Our mandate is to bridge the huge gap between ladies and boys when it comes to sports. We would like to urge anyone who may wish to sponsor the girls’ tournament to come forward. Thank you in advance, you can call Mxolisi at 0818999516.

8 Ball pool, largest in the World
VACANCIES VAKATURES
Part 4 WPA 8 ball pool is the largest played cue sport in the World. The game of eight-ball is derived from an earlier game invented around 1900 (first recorded in 1908) in the United States and initially popularised under the name “B.B.C. Co. Pool” (a name that was still in use as late as 1925) by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company. American-style eight-ball rules are played around the world by professionals and in many amateur leagues. Nevertheless, the rules for eight-ball may be the most contested of any billiard game. There are several competing sets of “official” rules. The non-profit World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA). SA 9 Ball has hosted the 8 Ball Championships for the past 3 years at Lake Umuzi. Panda’s Cue Sport, the promoter behind the WPA 8 Ball discipline, will host the 2020 SA 8 Ball Championships in March 2020. Local players from Gert
Sibande have done tremendously well over the past 3 years, with names like Thabo Taljaard and Jacobus Le Roux doing consistently well at the SA 8 Ball Championships and received medals over the past 3 years. Recent up and coming 8 ball players (Adam Nel, Kyle Jonker, Mandi Mente and Hendry Erasmus) will form part of the unit who will represent Panda’s & Mpumalanga 8/9/10 Ball Championships at the SA 8 Ball Championships. #PPL2019, the Panda’s Premier League, kicked off with a bang. 20 of the best Blackball Players from Hendrina, eMalahleni, Leandra and Secunda competed in Round 1 of the highly anticipated Cue Sport League in Mpumalanga. The league consists of 20 players who will play over 4 Rounds in the next 3 months for a Total prize of R18 750. All matches are going to be played at Panda’s Cue Sport. The knockouts would take place in December with the winner collecting a paycheque of R10 000. The next league matches will take place on 6 October at 10h00
Battle of the Giants The name Battle of the Giants conjures up images of medieval battles of horses and heavily armoured knights battling on the battlefields. Moedverloren farm between Leandra and Kinross saw horses and riders battle on a different type of field. Riders and horses were tested over various distances: 40km, 80km and the long 120km. This popular endurance race is hosted by Leandra Endurance Club. There
PROPERTIES EIENDOMME
were 127 entries of which men and women competed against each other. The races are very technical and horses must be kept in a healthy state at all times. Veterinarians are always available to help with any health issues; they are also there to keep a close eye on anything that could indicate as problematic with the horses. The horses’ health is of paramount importance. Horses are cooled down after each leg and their pulse very closely monitored. A pulse of 64 or less should be achieved within half an hour after each leg of the race. The horse is then taken to on of the veterinarians who will very carefully scrutinise the horse’s condition. After inspection by one of the veterinarians, the horses have a compulsory resting period of 40 minutes. The novice horses rode on Saturday as well and were restricted to a speed limit of 16km/h. The Battle of the Giants winner was Ami de Wet. The Battle of the Giants is the 80km race. There are a lot of regulations regarding the endurance races and clubs are restricted from arranging the races
without following the correct procedures. Any races that are hosted without the proper approvals, run the risk of their races being stopped. The Moedverloren farm of Pieter and Amanda Streicher is a very popular venue for endurance races. There are a few things for the children to do as well. Some children took to fishing in the dam next to the Headquarters. The atmosphere had the atmosphere of a fete. Enough food was on offer. From a full plate of food consisting of pap, sauce, salad, Boerewors and a steak or tjops to jaffels and pancakes. The Hervormde Kerk from Eendracht provided the food. There was a ferrier on duty to look after the hooves of the horses. He travels from Pretoria and cleaned up and treated the horses’ hooves. This is a big family affair. There is place to camp, play areas for the children and places where one could pat and help with the horses. This event truly is the best of the best and this is all to the amazing organising of everyone involved.
