Nurse cries assault when patient complains A pile of paper towels covered in faeces were left on the floor in a room at Evander Hospital last weekend. When Deon Coetzee wanted to visit his friend, Willie Brink, that is what he found in his room. According to Deon, Willie was crying when Deon arrived at the hospital. He complained that nobody helped him. Willie was involved in an accident with his scooter on Thursday night and his leg was fractured. Deon took photos of the paper towels and hospital staff later asked him to delete the photos form his phone, but he refused. “We smelled something bad when we arrived at the hospital,” said Deon. “There was nobody at the reception area of the ward when we arrived. We eventually found Willie and realised the smell was coming from his room. Deon complained to the nurse on duty who said there was nobody to help her clean up the mess. Deon’s wife, Shirley offered to help. He asked the staff how they could treat human beings in this manner. Deon went to Evander Police because he wanted to open a case against the hospital. The policeman on duty said they know how bad service is at Evander Hospital, but they cannot do anything about it. He suggested Deon talk to the matron. Back at the hospital, the security guard told Deon the matron is not available and wanted to know why he wanted to see her. The police arrived at the hospital and said a case of assault was opened against Deon. “They said I assaulted the nurse, but I did not,” said Deon. “They took statements from the nurse and a patient who also allege that I assaulted her, but they never took a statement from me.
“I do not even know where that patient came from. The first time I saw the man was when the police were taking down his statement.” The police also requested Deon to delete the photos, but he refused.
He was then prevented from leaving and was kept in the hospital against his will for nearly three hours. The police then requested Deon to apologised to the hospital staff. “I refused because I did nothing
Boy phones dad for help In another incident at Evander Hospital, a father was not allowed to spend the night by the bedside of his ill 10-year-old son. JP van Onselen was admitted to Evander Hospital on Tuesday, 11 July, after the attending doctor diagnosed him with pneumonia. During the week while JP was in hospital, his father, Wessel, slept inside his car at Evander Hospital most nights. He also stood at the window at JP’s room to be with his son whenever the hospital staff refused to let him visit his son. “He is only 10 years old and his mother died in an accident in March. He is still dealing with that trauma.” Wessel and JP’s great grandparents visited him in hospital on Wednesday night. Wessel wanted to sit with his son for the night, but hospital staff refused. “I wanted to be there for him because he did not want to let me go,” said Wessel. Wessel received a phone call from JP at about 02:00 the next morning, pleading for help. “When I arrived at the hospital, there was nobody in the children’s ward. I eventually found the staff asleep,” said Wessel. The safety gate at the children’s ward was locked. Nurses later said they locked the gate so that Wessel could not go inside
because his son gossips with his cell phone. When he eventually made it to JP’s room, JP was covered in his own vomit. The child said none of the nurses came to help him. “When I complained to the doctor, he told me he diagnosed JP incorrectly and my son was therefore given the wrong medicine.” Wessel then immediately wanted to take JP out of the hospital and rather take him to a private doctor, but hospital staff demanded he first prove he is JP’s father. He had to go to the police station and had to write an affidavit, stating that he is JP’s father. “The hospital staff then said my son is allergic to nicotine and it is my fault that he is so sick,” said Wessel. The private doctor who examined JP after this ordeal, said the boy had fluid on his lungs. JP was prescribed medicine and is recovering well. Hospital responds Dumisane Malamuleni, provincial spokesman for Evander Hospital, said the public must lodge complaints in writing at the office of the CEO. “Then we will be able to do a proper investigation,” said Dumisane. He also encouraged the public to assist them in lodging complaints. “Make sure to obtain the names and surnames of doctors and nurses who treat you badly,” he said.
wrong,” said Deon. He then gave his phone to the police and said they could delete the photos if they think it was the right thing to do, but the policeman said they could not. They released Deon and said he must report to the police station the next morning at 07:30 and speak to a certain captain. When he arrived at the station the next morning, the captain was not there and Deon left his contact details and address with the police officer on duty. He received a phone call the next day from the police informing him to report to the police again on Monday morning at 06:00. Deon said he could not comply with this demand, because he is working. Sgt Sibusisu Mbuli, spokesman of Evander Police said he knows of a case of assault opened against Deon and according to police officials Deon was uncooperative.

How to help your poisoned dog Dog poisonings seem to be on the increase. Some local vets said they handled a few incidents of dog poisonings during the last month. Four Dobermanns were poisoned in Joe Slovo Street last week. Local vet, Dr Louis Bosch, was called out and treated the animals. Three of the dogs died and one spent a few nights in the animal hospital. The owner of the dogs noticed small bags with meat in his yard when he went outside on Wednesday morning (5 July). By that time three of his dogs had already eaten of the meat. White foam came from their mouths. Another local vet, Dr Talitha Lubbe said she handled about five cases of dog poisoning in the past two months and in most cases the dogs were poisoned during the night and were already dead by the time their owners found them. She could save one Fox terrier. She said the poisonings occurred mostly during long weekends and the school holidays. EMERGENCY TREATMENT FOR POISONING GET YOUR DOG TO VOMIT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE 1) Feed the dog 15ml Hydrogen peroxide solution (B.P. 10 volume 3% m/m”). Use a syringe to administer the medicine slowly into the animal’s mouth. Avoid getting the liquid into the lungs. OR: 2) Alternatively, you can dissolve a teaspoon of laundry soap in a cup of lukewarm boiled water. Use a syringe do administer the medicine. 3) After the dog vomits, feed it 5-6 activated charcoal tablets (you can buy
these at any pharmacy) to absorb and neutralise any remaining poison in the stomach. 4) If these tablets are not available, take four slices of white bread and toast it in the oven to charred pieces. Dampen it with lukewarm boiled water and then use your finger to slowly force this into the back of the dog’s throat. Make sure the dog swallows normally. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF KNOWN POISONS 1. TWO-STEP OR ALDICARB Follow the above-mentioned steps. In these poison cases, the antidote Atropine is administered intravenously. Discuss this possibility with your vet beforehand. The vet will also be able to advise you on the use of cortisone, Vitamin B and anti-histamines such as Allergex and 10mg Phenergan. 2. RAT POISON Follow step 1 or 2 and 3. You can buy Kyrovite or Vitamin K over the counter. Again, discuss this with your vet. The injection should also preferably be administered intravenously or anally. The vet will also be able to advise you on the use of cortisone, Vitamin B and anti-histamines such as Allergex and 10mg Phenergan. 3. FROGS Follow the above steps. Afterwards you can rub a little bit of meat tenderiser, pineapple juice or pawpaw powder, as well as the peel of the pawpaw in
the mouth of the animal to break the protein chain in the saliva. Vomiting can be managed with a paediatric Valoid suppository. Suppositories are absorbed quickly and will not be vomited out. Give the animal liquids such as Rooibos tea, nartjie flavoured Energade, water and goat milk. 4. SWALLOWED GLASS? Spread mayonnaise on a slice of bread, place 4 to 5 cotton balls on top and fill it up with more mayonnaise and fish paste or Marmite. Use scissors to cut the bread in in 1cm squares and feed it to the dog. The cotton will hook around the pieces of glass and binds it so that it will be easy for the animal to pass the glass. Afterwards administer 2 – 3 tablespoons of pharmacist’s paraffin. – SOURCE: Pierre van Niekerk © 2015 Symptoms of Poisoning Soon after ingesting poison, the following symptoms will be visible: • Muscle spasms and excessive spitting – the animal may appear to be shivering. • The animal vomits blood (blood in vomit or excrement) and can also struggle to breath. • Pupils remain small even when light is dimmed. • Pulse and heartbeat is slower than normal. • Seizures • Less or excessive urinating, weakened muscle function.
Council meeting disrupted Chaos ensued at a council meeting at Govan Mbeki Municipality on Friday, 14 July when about 100 protesters sang as the meeting was about to start. Protesters entered the council chambers and disrupted the meeting by demanding that the executive mayor, Flora Maboa-Boltman resign. They displayed placards and as they were escorted outside by security guards, a fire extinguisher was released and one of the councillors actually had to go to the doctor and receive treatment. ANC councillors alleged the former municipal manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mmela Mahlangu, mobilised the ANC Youth League to disrupt the meeting. A gazebo was also set alight, but the fire was extinguished fast. The protesters broke windows and the licensing office which is situated in the same building had to be closed because of the protest action. Encee van Huyssteen, DA councillor said the DA at Govan Mbeki Municipality strongly condemns this meeting disruption by ANC supporters who brought
proceedings to a standstill. According to him, one of the points on the agenda was the appointment of a new municipal manager. “The former municipal manager, Mmela Mahlangu’s contract was not renewed in January after allegations of corrupt dealings within the municipality,” said Encee. “There were also allegations that high ranking ANC officials in the province have instructed ANC council members to ensure the reinstatement of Mmela. “Council has a duty to do its job and the mayor must ensure that we carry out our mandate by preventing such disruptions from occurring in future. “This factional infighting by the ANC is costing the municipality unnecessary money which ultimately affects the public in the Govan Mbeki municipal area. “The ANC has once again shown that they are unable to govern and deliver much-needed services to the people all they are interested in is selfenrichment and positioning. “Under the ANC-led government, our municipality has reached a stalling point. “Real change is needed in the municipality.”

Women knit for kids Dawn (DA Women’s Network) already began celebrating Mandela Day on Saturday when they visited the Velile Victim Empowerment Centre that caters for vulnerable and abused children. The women from Dawn took cupcakes and cold drinks to the children. They also invited 67 women to knit for 67 minutes. The blocks knitted will be made into
blankets that will be donated to the empowerment centre. About 22 children are permanent residents at this centre which is completely dependent on donations. The women were also spoiled with bread and soup and DA councillors, Estelle Swart, Tonny Madikezela and Mariaan Chamberlain also attended the event.
Care group visits Bethal prison Women of the Invest my Future project that focuses on prison ministry, visited Bethal Prison on Friday, 14 July. Many women involved in this project are also members of the Vroue Landbou-unie (Women’s Agricultural Union). Marlene van Wyngaardt opened with prayer and Scripture and the team then spoiled the female prisoners with cupcakes, magazines and material for sewing crafts. The prisoners in return made flowers
out of paper that the women will use at a VLU conference. The team of Invest my Future visits Bethal and Middelburg Prisons once a month. The Christmas behind Bars project is their main project at these prisons where they give each prisoner a gift containing toiletries and other things. The project is dependent on sponsors and donations for these gifts. If you want to help or get involved, contact Mariaan Beukes at 082 611 1773.

Dr. Zac bou Lego-hospitaal

Suikerbekkies bederf seniors
Pastors Simon and Beauty Tshabalala opened a shelter for homeless people last year. They are the leading pastors of God’s Fire Ministries in Secunda. The shelter that can host about 20 people is on the same premises. They have strict rules for people who want to live there. Residents must attend church and prayer meetings daily and can only stay for three months until they get back on their feet again. “The Word of God is the only thing that can change people,” said Beauty. “On their own they cannot change. “We try to help them find jobs and turn their lives around.” The ministry among the homeless began a long time ago. Beauty and her team often held outreach projects. However, it was during an outreach in September last year that the shelter became a reality. Beauty and her team were doing an outreach in Secunda in the CBD and handed out food and also preached the Gospel. “We invited to the shelter those who accepted Christ and had no home,” said Beauty. The shelter ministry is dependent on sponsors and donations. There are matrasses that were donated, but not enough blankets. The church provides food once a day. With the municipality’s help, Beauty also started a project to teach women sewing skills. The main objective of this project is to teach abused and vulnerable unemployed women how to make clothes and other materials so that they can eventually generate their own income. Beauty’s dream is to eventually start up a factory that makes clothes and overalls and employ these women. Any women interested are welcome to join this project. Beauty also reaches out to women in Bethal Prison. She started this prison ministry 18 years ago. She visits the prison weekly and minister to female prisoners and

Hy het egter eers toe hy 14 jaar oud was by feeste begin optree.
geniet.

roepign is.

Pupils from Grade 8 to 12 attended the camp and were empowered spiritually, in their personal lives and their studies. “We had a week filled with inspirational talks, practical exercises on life’s issues such as,
Who am I and Where do I see myself in the next five years,” said Pastor Beauty Tshabalala, founder of God’s Fire Ministries. These activities were done with the use and implementation of the Bible as a guide. The pupils were taken to Secunda stadium and had an athletics day and took
