Black out Saturday: cable theft
Crime has been on the increase in our area lately, whether it is cable theft, rape or instances of breaking and entering. The Bulletin has been reporting on these crimes, but while writing this article, realised that it has become extremely difficult to keep up with all of them. One of the major crimes at the moment is cable theft. On Friday, 14 June, on one of the Zello channels, residents called in to inform the moderators that there was a suspicious looking male “working” on the electricity boxes. With a quick response, the suspect was apprehended and the SAPS was informed. The cable thief’s hands had fresh burns and scars of old burns. These scars were from previous cable thefts. Why were there burns on his hands? It is called electrical flash. When working with electricity, it is common to shock even though the current is switched off because of the energy that is still in the cable. With the electricity boxes in the front yards, the cables are stolen with an alternate current still switched on. This current runs on approximately 380 AC volts (less than 500 volts is seen as a minor shock). The electrical flash is caused by a neutral wire touching a live wire… thus the burns. It was also alleged that gunshots were
fired. No shots were fired. A wall was pulled over. The suspect tried to jump the wall, but was grabbed and pulled down. The wall caving in was the sound that sounded like gunshots. The suspect was allegedly working with another person, but refused to divulge that information to the SAPS. It will cost Govan Mbeki Municipality about R11 000 to replace the stolen cables on the electricity boxes. After Friday’s successful apprehension, the electricity throughout town was off on Saturday, 15 June. It was unclear why until the Zello team was on the case. Calls kept on coming through on the channel, the same questions were asked: “Why is the power off?” and “When is the power back on again?” On Facebook Cllr Mariaan Chamberlain kept everyone updated with text messages that were sent out from GMM. The message read as follows: “Unfortunately for power to be restored will take us some time because our back-up supply is overloading as well, now we will be pushed to fix the cable that they have stolen of which it will take some time. But to be safe note that we’ll be able to restore power around 18:00PM.” The problem was quickly discovered by the Zello team. Behind Hendrik de Waal street evidence was found
that the cable had been dug up with a shovel. A few metres away from the theft site, a fire was found that was used to burn off the cable’s insulation. With the knowledge of the Zello team, 4 scrapyards were visited and were informed to please keep an eye out for cables, should the suspect come to sell them. No one has contacted them yet. Approximately 12 metres of cable was stolen in the early hours of Saturday morning. This is the fourth time the same cable has been stolen. Two cable joints had to be replaced and one cable joint costs R7 000. It is still unclear how much it will cost the municipality to replace the cable. – Ané Prinsloo

Man stabbed to death in Evander A man was killed at approximately 01H00 on Sunday morning in Evander. In what appears to be a robbery, a man was stabbed near Markhams. It is alleged that the man gambled nearby and was attacked in the parking lot, near Markhams, in Brahm Fischer st. He apparently stumbled to the front of Markhams where he succumbed to his wounds. The Evander Police is appealing to anyone with any information to contact Warrant Officer Vusi Makhetha on 0824637990.
MEC Shabalala visited families of R544 Road crash victims Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Ms. Gabisile Shabalala, visited the families of the six people who perished in a head on collision between two sedans that took place on Friday, 14 June on the R544 Road between Emalahleni and Verena. She first stopped at Tweefontein Village in Thembisile Hani Local Municipality at a family who lost five family members that included three children. Shabalala offered her condolences to the visibly distraught Ndhlovu and Masombuka families. The MEC decried these road crashes saying that it was devastating for one family to lose five members in one crash. “One road death is one too many and losing five family members at a go is too much. We all need to play our role to bring an end to these tragedies,” the MEC said.

One would expect in the modern world that veldfires and runaway fires in densely populated areas are easily prevented and extinguished, but that is not the case. With the recent increase of veldfires in the area it is important to look at the ecological factors and also the dangers that veldfires pose. According to South Africa’s rainfall patterns, the country has two fire seasons: the dry summer months in the Western Cape and the dry winter months in the rest of the country. Most fires are started by accident or carelessness. According to research, approximately 70% of South Africa’s ecosystems are fire adaptive, but because most areas are populated, the need to manage fires in a way that is appropriate for land type and land use while ensuring that the natural processes and patterns are maintained, is of utmost importance. It is important to remember that veldfires have no respect for property or boundaries. If the weather is favourable and there is vegetation to burn, it will continue for as long as it can survive. Veldfires are responsible for more CO2 in the atmosphere than large cities’ pollution. The largest source of air pollution is smoke. The major pollutants in smoke are carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4). These all pose extreme health risks to people. Veldfires also lead to soil erosion and changes in the hydrological cycle. This has led to
the destruction of fauna and flora and pollution of air and water. If one looks at the animal and insect life in the veld, it is obvious that, should a veld burn, these animals and insects can and probably will burn to death. The benefits of veldfires are the chance for regrowth. Ash from fires can act as fertiliser and old plant burn can give life to new plants to grow. Also, food for some animals and birds are the result of animals and insects escaping from veldfires. Another issue is road safety. If smoke is the cause of poor visibility, it is advised that one should take another route or wait until the smoke has dissipated. This is not only to avoid poor visibility, but also the numerous health risks that could be caused by dangerous gases emitted by the smoke. It is important to educate young children about the dangers of fire. It might look pretty, but the devastation it leaves behind is absolutely horrendous. Lollos Daycare visited the GMM Fire station on Friday, 14 June. Mr Douw Botha and fellow firefighters taught the children about the jaws of life and the use of it. The children were taught what to do if there is a fire and who to call. The children repeated the numbers back to Mr Botha: “1! 1! 2! from a cell phone and 1! 0! 7! from a landline!” They had the opportunity to wear a real fire suit and also the most exciting part of all was that they saw a real fireman’s pole! These educational trips are very important for the children because knowledge is power.

Klawervlei laerskool. Donkerberg primêr. Laerskool Gannaskolk. Matroosberg akademie. Ek besluit diè Saterdagoggend om ‘n draai daar te gaan maak van Langebaan af, aangesien my vrou betrokke is as onderwyseres, en Kassie en Annelie Carstens die lekkerste slaptjips in die wêreld daar maak. Om my wanderlust ekstra te bevredig, besluit ek om met my motorfiets te ry. Dis ‘n wonderlike, helder oop dag, sonder ‘n wolkie, of die berugte weskuswind wat waai. Perfek. Ek grinnik.
Baie vriende van my is motorfietsryers. (Myne was veel, veel minder. Ek het ‘n hele kartonhouer vol toerusting gekoop by ‘n Hospicewinkel vir R100-00.
Dis ‘n stokperdjie, ‘n passie, ‘n lewenswyse.

Robert Pirsig se boek Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance verduidelik iets hiervan. En as jy ander kant stop, is jou kop oop. Skoon.

DinosAlive exhibition at Secunda Mall
DinosAlive opened on Friday, 14 June, at Secunda Mall. This exhibition was welcomed with extreme anticipation and excitement. DinosAlive tells the story of dinosaurs from the Mesozoic Era, from approximately 250 million years ago. Animatronics ensure that all 16 dinosaurs are completely lifelike, giving a sense of realism and a feel for what it must have been like to live in the age of dinosaurs. (https:// dinosalive.co.za/) The Bulletin was there on Friday morning and experienced first hand the children’s joyous faces and smiles from ear to ear. A lot of parents and grandparents also told the Bulletin that this was the best dinosaur exhibition they have been to! The Intolerance Towards the Disabled One certainly could not have foreseen or predicted the repercussions associated with the disconnection of electrical supply to numerous households in Secunda. The disconnection for undeniable outstanding payments, would be the right thing to do. But there are the countless, on time paying rate payers who mistakenly became victims of the GMM’s inability to train competent persons in the basics of when to disconnect households. One such person's , let’s name her Sophy, ordeal commenced early. Let us introduce Sophy to illustrate how the lack of account control and the total lack of facilities at the GMM’s offices can change one’s life in a few hours. Sophy lives with her husband, a longdistance lorry driver, in a modest home
in the Secunda municipal area. Her husband ’s occupation requires that he leaves home early and maybe only return home in the next few days. Sophy’s mobility is challenged in such a way that she must rely on crutches and the help of others to move to and from their home. They therefore ensure that their water and lights account is always paid on time and in full. The order was given to disconnect the electrical supply to their house because of a mistaken reading on that fateful day. There was no knock on the door to advise her that the power was being disconnected, no, just a small piece of paper with tiny letters, spelling out the so-called arrears, placed in an obscure place in the barrier surrounding the
Izingubo Kuala Notandum The Zulu words for Blankets with Love, a shared initiative by the two Spar supermarkets in Secunda, The Bulletin and SADFA. We asked the Chairperson of SADFA, Henry Buÿs, what distinguishes this concept from the several other projects and collections that are being initiated during the cold winter months? “What makes this initiative unique is the approach with which this collection of blankets is managed. This methodology presents and affords the donor a much easier means to contribute and relieve the hardship of others, specifically during the cold winter period. The request for specifically blankets generally creates a multitude of questions with the benefactor i.e.
what size, what thickness, fleece or woven, where do I buy and or deliver, will I be able to afford a blanket that is suitable? These perceived and real issues, are now taken care of by this imaginative initiative, in dealing with the decisionmaking process. This way the donor is assured that the correct purpose selected article is donated and incorporating this with your monthly visit to your favourite Spar supermarket is a one-way answer. Buy and leave the blanket/s at the Spar supermarket, as a donation, while you are enjoying your monthly purchases. This method will make you, the donor, feel at ease with your contribution as this is exactly as required” said Henry.

property. After some frantic telephone calls to an already overloaded switchboard, with irate persons, she eventually spoke to someone with authority. Only to be informed that the account as per the GMM’s data base was in arrears and the only solution was to come to the office and to present proof of payment. Even that would not guarantee that the power would be restored that same day. Sophy did not know or could never in her wildest dreams foresee, that her ordeal would just increase hundredfold when arriving at the GMM’s offices. The suffering, frustrations and dehumanising that she would have to endure, is a daily occurrence to all wheelchair bound and walk challenged persons, that they are exposed to and put through every day when attempting to reach the nonfriendly and non-adherence to access regulations offices of the GMM and or the library. Parking for disabled persons in the area with access to the post office, municipal offices and library is nonexistent. The area is littered with used condoms, empty bottles, broken glass, the list goes on. The existing parking area is very dangerous and at times even life threatening to the elderly and disabled by the vagrants ’ overbearing arrogance and the so called “car watchers”, who dominate and rule that area. Oh well, then we will use the entrance at the library. Another disillusion. The gate to the entrance is locked and it seems as if the guard has been
instructed to only allow cars that do not display the green sticker indicating a disabled person when one examines the cars parked in the area at the theatre and library. This is in no way an indication and or allegation of the guards’ intentions towards disabled persons from reaching the offices, no, it is a clear indication of the unwillingness and or don’t care attitude, the egotistic thinking and the only looking after themselves mindset of the GMM management with relation to providing access as required by law, to the disabled rate paying persons. Regulation 305 of the Road Traffic Acts states that: “No person other than a disabled person or a driver of a motor vehicle conveying disabled persons, which motor vehicle is issued with a sticker for conveying disabled persons, shall park in a parking bay reserved for disabled persons.” This is an excellent regulation, which will be adhered to by such driver and person. The question remains: why are there no such facilities for access to the GMM offices and or the library? Back to Sophy, a good Samaritan afforded her a lift to the offices, the guard at the gate was persuaded to give the car entry to the “exclusive” parking area. After a feeble excuse of persons not doing their work properly, this should not have happened. The power was restored at 16H00. Now the question is: will Sophy the rate payer, be required to pay the R399 reconnection fee? - Aart Reedijk

The past weekend Youth Day was celebrated across various platforms and through various events. Some history behind Youth Day: The Soweto uprising was a series of demonstrations and protests led by black school children in South Africa that began on the morning of 16 June 1976. Students from numerous Sowetan schools began to protest in the streets of Soweto in response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. (https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Soweto_uprising). New Age engineering was started in 2003 and in January 2017 changed their name to New Age Engineering Solutions. The fully black owned company prides itself in giving back to the community and did just that on Friday, 14 June, at the Sasol Club in eMbalenhle with their Youth Enterprise Day. The whole day was so constructed and structured that young entrepreneurs would learn tips and tricks, meet and greet and learn industry tricks to assist in their future endeavours. The morning was opened with prayer and was followed by Mr Joseph Zinyana, New Age Engineering Solutions CEO. Mr Zinyana spoke to the entrepreneurs about the background and history of the company. VACANCIES
VAKATURES Piksteel and Dr Kush dominated in Roodepoort Dominators Den Fighters took part and made Secunda as well as their gym proud in the Victor Grappling competition over the past weekend in Roodeport, Johannesburg. The event took place on Saturday, 15 June, at Hoërskool Florida. Fighters Paul “Piksteel” Ronge and Kerwin “Dr Kush” de Waal took part and both won Silver Medals at the event. There were 2 rounds of 5 minutes and if there was no clear winner from those rounds, they would go to sudden death in order to find the winner of the matchups. Paul “Piksteel“ Ronge won his first match-up by using a triangle choke hold to get the opponent to submit and tap out of the match-up. In his second match-up he won when the roll went to sudden death. This was a great achievement as he went into the competition after finishing a 12-hour nightshift showing his skill and passion for the sport. Kerwin “Dr Kush” de Waal was able to achieve a win by forcing a
submission of his opponent with a rear naked choke and set the standard in his roll. Both fighters are dedicated to the sport and committed to achieving success through their strict training. Grappling is a form of hand-to-hand combat that happens when two opponents try gaining advantage against their opponent by obtaining a submission via a tap (hence the term “tap out”) or points-based movements in attempts to subdue the opponent in close range fights. Grappling is a “Martial art” using elements of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Wrestling where no kicks or punches are used but rather choke holds, submission holds and moving between guard as well as mount positions. The sport takes many years to master as well as uses a complete understanding of the body and its abilities as well as weak points, also an extreme level of mental calmness and ultimate fitness. - Ané Prinsloo

Walker Park Golf Club’s 39th Gold Rush The 39th Gold Rush at Walker Park Country Club was played this past weekend, 14 - 17 June and approximately 89 players played this year. Like previous years, the golfers were not scared to brave the cold winter mornings and ensured they were covered from head to toe. This did not deter any of the players. As usual the days were well sponsored by various sponsors on the four days. The sponsors were: Gavin Gertzen from Gavin Gertzen Steel Co., Lukas and Susan Potgieter, Fortis Hotel Evander, Lake Umuzi, Boesies, Papa de La and Klinger. The course was in immaculate condition despite the winter field that is in play and the greens had their trademark quick roll. Some golfers laughed when asked about the putting and said that the greens were incredibly fast! The winners on Day 1 were: RJ Ferreira – 40 points and Vanessa Potgieter - 35 Day 2: Renet van Biljon – 38 and Deon Uys – 43 Day 3: Henry Brooks – 44 and Vanessa Potgieter – 39 On Day 4 the overall winners were announced: Renet van Biljon - 77 and the men’s winner was Hansie Annandale – 83. The Gold Rush was again a huge success and a big thank you to all the sponsors. The biggest thank you goes to the Walker Park team. The staff did an amazing job and without them the Gold Rush would not have been as successful as it was! Well done team! - Ané Prinsloo Right: Mr Hansie Annandale won the Gold Rush with 83 points with MJ van Rensburg. Far Right: The amazing Walker Park Golf Club team. This team worked night and day to ensure everything was perfect for the 39th Gold Rush.
