eMzinoni erupts in violence V
iolence erupted in eMzinoni on Thursday. It allegedly started with the arrest of gang members. The community is accusing the police of not taking action against the gang members. The Bulletin spoke to bystanders in and around eMzinoni. They all alleged that the Stragel gang is killing people randomly. They would allegedly target any random person before assaulting them, maybe even killing them in the process. The exact spark that started the protest actions is not 100% clear, but it is alleged that a gang member was killed. The rival gang started to go to schools to try and find some of the suspected gang members, disrupting classes and threatening pupils. Parents had to fetch their frightened children from school. The community demanded that action be taken against the gangsters by the police. They demanded that the gang members be arrested and that they stay in jail. The community accused the police of being against the community. They said that they have lost faith in the police.
The community members started to march towards the police station, barricading the roads with rocks, bottles and new storm water pipes. A group of people marched towards the eMzinoni police station, throwing it with stones and trying to set it alight. The SAPS defended the station with shotguns loaded with rubber anti-riot ammunition. The area around the police station resembled a war zone. There were embers left of the tyres that were burning all over the area. The Bulletin entered the station’s charge office only to find a hive of activity with police officers completing forms and tagging confiscated weapons. The community organised an all-night vigil on Sunday night. They started to mobilise around 23H00 and forced other members of the community to join them. If you had a son, he needed to join. If not, then the father of the house had to join. They all gathered at the Raymond Mavuso hall. Tyres and other combustibles were burned, the singing and toi toi-ing continued into the early hours of the morning. Some residents didn’t sleep at all.
Roads were barricaded with anything they could lay their hands on. The Morgenzon road saw a few accidents as the coal trucks were forced to dump the coal in the road. Drivers didn’t see the dumped coal and drove into the coal heaps. A truck was torched in front of the Bethal police station early on Monday morning. The driver had a narrow escape when he heard voices; he heard a window breaking and saw a petrol bomb being thrown into the truck. He managed to escape and raised the alarm. On Monday morning the fires were lit very early and the roads closed off again. The community were dispersed by the SAPS members but kept on returning. The Baanbreker road was a particular problem. The group again mobilised the rest of the community by calling “Soldier! Soldier!” meaning that they continued with forceful mobilisation. One of The Bulletin’s informants was speaking to the Editor when they knocked on his door. “I fear for my life,” he said. Some residents marched to town and continued their protest actions close to
the magisterial court. They demanded that the 35 odd members that were arrested by the police be released without bail and that the gang members be handed over to them so that the community could deal with them. Calm has been restored in eMzinoni following the unrest related to gangs. Police led by Brigadier Sifiso Cele, Cluster Commander, met with various stakeholders and community members in an attempt to resolve the matter. Residents told Brigadier Cele that they decided to take the law into their own hands because they have lost confidence in the police. They accused the police of various misconducts and brutality. Brigadier Cele urged them to calm down and give them a chance to do the right thing. He said that those who have grievances against the police, can report to IPID. About 35 people were arrested for public violence and nine alleged gang members were arrested. The Bulletin was informed that the bail application of the persons that were arrested will be heard on Thursday, 22 August.

A 44-year-old female, Sheila Seba Graig, was denied bail by the Nelspruit Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 13 August, after she was arrested on Monday facing charges of Trafficking in Persons. It is alleged that on Monday, 12 August, the suspect arrived at the Nelspruit SAPS Community Service Centre carrying a one-month old baby boy and wanted to write an affidavit to adopt the baby. When asked the whereabouts of the mother of the child, she alleged that the mother is in Belville, Cape Town. The suspect also showed the mother of the child’s affidavit with Belville SAPS date stamp that she was given by the mother of the baby. The police asked the cell phone number of the mother of the child to confirm the adoptions. The suspect gave them a phone number which was answered by a male person who dropped the phone after hearing that he is talking to the police. The ID document of the suspect looked fraudulent. The investigation revealed that the child was stolen by the suspect from the Belville hospital after claiming to be the relative of the mother who was not well after giving birth. The name of the child’s mother is Bernadett Saayman (26). The child was placed in a place of safety. DPCI is investigating the case. The suspect is remanded in custody and the case was posted to 20 August for formal bail application.
Three suspects arrested for dealing in rhino horns The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation deployed an integrated team of experts to execute search warrants in Gauteng Province near Johannesburg, on Thursday, 15 August, following months of investigating an alleged rhino horn syndicate. Three suspects, aged between 45 and 53, believed to be the masterminds behind the rhino horn syndicate were arrested. Two rhino horns, with unconfirmed value and two vehicles as well as an amount of more than R70 000 were seized during the operation which targeted three premises. The operation comes in the wake of a year-long investigation by the Mpumalanga Hawks members who successfully infiltrated this notorious syndicate that traffics rhino horns within South Africa and abroad, particularly, the South East Asian countries. This integrated investigation spearheaded by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Middelburg based members, SANParks, the Department of Environmental Affairs, Financial Intelligence Centre, Asset Forfeiture, Crime Intelligence, Forensic Science Laboratory, Special Task Force, Department of Home Affairs, National Prosecution Authority and Mpumalanga Parks Board demonstrated the government’s ability to work together in fighting wildlife trafficking in South Africa and beyond. Several covert transactions were conducted with the syndicate during the investigation which exposed their entrenched links to the illicit rhino horn trafficking in the Gauteng Province. The syndicate worked meticulously and tried to counter all law enforcement actions to protect their dealings, which made it an
extremely difficult investigation. The crime scene investigations are still continuing to unveil the syndicate’s operations and additional arrests have not been ruled out. All suspects were expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 16 August. The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Mpumalanga, Major General Mokoena, applauded the sterling work of her members, saying that the members always work hard for fight crime within the province and beyond the provincial boundaries. The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lt General Lebeya, commended the integrated work that lead to the dismantling of this Wildlife Trafficking syndicate.
Jealous boyfriend sentenced for murder Last week, the Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Nelspruit sentenced Hemilion Penuel Mazibuko to 12 years direct imprisonment after he pleaded guilty of murdering the mother of his six-year-old child in Gumakhulu tavern. The court heard that in July 2017, the deceased and the accused went to the local tavern. They found the tavern full of patrons and they both did not have a place to sit. Later on, the deceased was accommodated by her friends at their table. While the deceased was occupied by her friends, she disappeared and Mazibuko found her standing at the back of the tavern with an unknown man. He confronted her about why she was standing in the dark with a man and she replied that the man owed her money. He further proceeded that they must leave for their common home. Along the way an argument started where he ended up slapping her and strangling her to death. Upon realising that the deceased is no longer breathing, he buried her in a shallow grave and reported her as missing. Mazibuko was eventually arrested. He confessed to the commission of the offence and pointed out to the police where he buried the deceased’s body. In aggravation of sentence senior state advocate, John Maenga, told the court that the accused committed a serious offence and overreacted to a situation that could have been amicably resolved. During sentencing the presiding officer. Judge Kgoele, found that there were substantial and compelling circumstances to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence. He then sentenced Mazibuko to 15 years imprisonment; three years suspended effectively and he will serve 12 years direct imprisonment. The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Adv. Matric Luphondo welcomed the sentence.

Woman burnt while using paraffin stove On Wednesday, 14 August, Mrs Unati Pakamile (43) was preparing food for her children and while using the paraffin stove it ran out of fuel. Not waiting for it to cool down she proceeded to refill it. At this point there was a sucking sound and the fuel shot out onto her body and she caught fire, causing extensive burns to her chest, legs and arms. She sustained life threatening burns to more than half her body and it will be a hard and long road to recovery. The Bulletin wishes to use this unfortunate incident to highlight the safe use of these, as many of our readers make use of paraffin and gas stoves. The way that a paraffin stove works is that paraffin is released under pressure into the burner, the vapour that is released is the fuel that burns. The stove must be allowed to cool down before it is even opened to be refilled. If you cannot wait, it can be safely cooled with a wet cloth until it is cool to the touch. The stove must always be placed and used on a firm flat surface. It is better to use the stove on the ground if you
cannot put it where it won’t fall over. Children are fascinated by the sound the stove makes and often knock the stove over in their curiosity; therefore, it is best to place the stove where they cannot get to it. Many fires are started by stoves that are knocked over. Remember that the heat of the stove radiates so ensure that anything that could catch fire is NOT left near the stove’s vicinity. There are lots of low quality cheap imported stoves available, many of these lack safety features and are dangerous to use. It is best to keep a bucket of sand close to the stove as using water on a paraffin fire will just let the fire spread, sand is the best and safest method to extinguish the fire. Storing of paraffin in cooldrink bottles is common and is a major cause of poisoning young children. The paraffin is usually sold in childproof bottles and should always be kept in these bottles. If you make use of large containers it should be poured into a childproof bottle. If a child drinks paraffin do not make them
vomit, but make sure they are taken to the hospital. If your gas cooker suddenly starts burning from a place other than the cooker head, the safest method is to close the gas cylinder’s tap. If this is not possible, it is best to cover it with a wet towel, carry it out of your house and leave it in an open area. At this point contact the fire department to extinguish the fire. If not, it will burn until the gas runs out. Always check the condition of gas pipes regularly as they crack and leak. Never use a gas stove or paraffin stove on top of an electric stove in case it is accidently switched on. If a pan of oil catches fire cover the whole pan with a wet towel, don’t use water as the oil will spatter and land on your skin. Always make sure that pan handles are turned away from you so that they face away from the front of the stove. A fire extinguisher is far cheaper than replacing all your possessions in your house so consider getting a small one and keeping it just inside your front door. Phone 112 for a Fire Engine.

Take a deep breath and speak slowly. Give the operator your name and phone number in case you get cut off, a second number is also a good idea. Explain what the problem is. Give the address or clear directions on how to find you. Give landmarks near you. If you are not able to, consider getting someone to meet the vehicle at a landmark. If you are able to drop a pin and send it, which is much faster and ensures the vehicle can come directly to you.

Graham baie goed geken.

Soargirlchild host annual event at Sasol Club eMbalenhle The month of August is known as the month for women, where usually many organisations host dinners and other events in celebrating women in excellence, but also to raise funds to help other people in need.
Soargirlchild, an organisation from eMbalenhle, hosted an event called TALITA KORUM LADIES BRUNCH. “The aim of the organisation is to help save a girl child from all bad things happening in our society,” said
Giving back to the Golden Oldies In the middle of winter Prommac ran an initiative named the Winter Warmer campaign. Prommac’s Human Capital Team scoured the community and this year their all seeing eyes fell upon the Golden Oldies, a group of senior citizens in the Secunda area. The team collected non-perishable food items, wool and knitting needles to donate midwinter
and the Golden Oldies were so touched that they invited Prommac to come and be spectators at their athletics day held in July which the Prommac team were thrilled to be part of and stood on the sidelines cheering on those who once cheered us on. “You know you must be doing something right if old people like you.” - Dave Chappelle
Ntandokazimu Tshabalala, the owner and the founder of the organisation. She also explained that as she is a teacher, she saw a great need to have this organisation as many school children miss days in class. An initiative was started in a slogan: “No child must miss a day in school because of her period!” They visited a lot of companies and businesses asking for a donation of at least R50 for a kit where they buy Sanitary Towels and other things needed for young women especially when they have their period. Although it is not easy, but they strive to make sure this is a success. The event had a great turn out of more than 150 guests together with parents who left the event praising the organisers for their excellent work. From ages of 14 – 25-year-old girls from eMbalenhle school said that every year they will attend the event to learn some basics skills of life. According to the study conducted by Soargirlchild, in our community about 500 learners miss days in school. The issue being unable to attend school because she has her period which end up costing them valuable time in class at the end of the year. They lose important class tests and year marks. Several speakers did not overlook the issue of high teenage pregnancy especially in schools around Govan Mbeki municipality. Young school children were encouraged to focus more on studying rather than doing other things. Businesspeople and various stakeholders wished the organisation a long-life span as it changed a lot of lives.
“It begins with one child per person, if you can spend R50 a month when doing your grocery shopping by purchasing a kit of sanitary towels and drop them at any school in the Govan Mbeki Municipality area you would have saved the day,” said one of the teachers in attendance emphasising the problem they face on a daily basis as educators where a young girl starts her period at school and there is no help. Sometimes they must take money out of their pockets and buy Sanitary Towels. A slogan by the house was introduced saying “SANITARY TOWELS FOR FREE AND CONDOMS FOR SALE” meaning having periods is natural whereas sex is a choice! A quick brainstorming session of the ladies on how to better eMbalenhle, came up with brilliant ideas from young girls. Some raised the importance of having an edu centre that will provide for the space of studying. Another idea was a Rehab centre that will help decrease drug abuse in the area. A very beautiful event was hosted by young women in South Africa showing that the continent is busy moving towards the Forth Industrial Revolution. We are very motivated by the owners of the organisation, their hard work and dedication in bettering lives of others and we hope everyone can do that . Liewe Moeders van die Balkie Kinders...
Evacuate! Evacuate! A bomb threat and a fire scare were the two different emergency evacuation exercises that happened last week: one at the Secunda Mall and one at the Megchem building. The Secunda Mall evacuation was well planned and executed. All parties involved were informed beforehand to execute the exercise and to ensure that the plan, should it have flaws, be identified, assessed and managed thereafter. Later in the week an unplanned emergency was organised wherein only management and the relevant emergency services were informed. The employees of the company were only informed after the emergency. This emergency exercise was a bomb threat in a building close to the Johannes Stegman Theatre, the Megchem building. The roads were cordoned off and the employees evacuated the building quickly and efficiently. The employees were briefed after the building was cleared by the SAP bomb squad and all the
information as to why the decision was made to not inform them was carried over. The bomb threat message caused panic over various social media pages with family members and friends franticly trying find out what was happening and whether their family member or friends were safe. The biggest reason why the exercise was not made public knowledge was to ensure authentic reactions from the people working in the building and also their reaction time of the employees for a full evacuation. The SAP responded very well. The K9 unit, bomb squad, flying squad, fire department and ambulance services were on scene to ensure the safety of all involved. The K9 unit used one of their trusty sniffer dogs to find the alleged device and the bomb squad ensured that the alleged device was deactivated. Well done to all the emergency services involved with their swift response and professional demeanour! – Ané Prinsloo
O ek ken hierdie storie. Dis ʼn Afrikaanse skool ding dink ek... En dit tref my so hard!!! Want my kinders het so min tyd vir speel of ontspan...
Maar my hart is dankbaar. So, so dankbaar. Hou kop my mede moeders. Kom ons hou kop en kom ons hou ons oë op die Here. - Tania Greyling Meyer

It was such an honour yet a scary moment to hear my 4-year-old son honestly say that when he grows up, he wants to be a 3 in 1 package who works at Sasol as a doctor in the Sasol Hospital and a doctor for the animals and also a fireman to put out the dangerous fires in Gasification. He wants to work in Sasol, not just anywhere in Sasol, but he wants to be based at Gasification… Due to the fact that this little intelligent man is so observant and listens to the conversations that takes place at home, he knows his grandfather (Selva Moodley) was a manager who gave commands, (which he thinks is such a cool job) with whom he spends a lot of his time with, worked at Gasification

before he ended his 40 years’ service in February this year and his father (Darien Naidoo) who was an Electrician in the same plant. He is under the impression that his mummy (Lerisha Moodley) works at the farm in Sasol because she always talks about the animals. On the weekends his way of getting out the house and having some fun is for us to take a drive into the Secondary area to go past the farms, the hospital, the big fires at North gate down to Gasification. So, mummy had to get to the drawing board after their discussion and start getting creative to meet his expectations of what he wanted for his career day. The end result was breath taking and what made this even more special was his special Sasol overall pants which once upon a time belonged to mummy. What an honour for a little 4-year-old to represent Sasol at his career day. Lerisha Moodley Right: Ushen at his school’s career day with his PPE, his toolbox and his badges

CAROM @ PANDA’S CUE SPORT CUE SPORTS PART 1 of 8 DID YOU KNOW? The word carom, which simply means any strike and rebound, was in use in reference to billiards by at least 1779, sometimes spelled “carrom” Sources differ on the origin. It has been pegged variously as a shortening of the Spanish and Portuguese word carambola or the French word carambole, which are used to describe the red object ball. In modern French the word carambolage means “successive collision”, currently used mainly in reference to carom or cannon shots in billiards and to multiple-vehicle car crashes. In three-cushion billiards, sometimes called three-cushion carom or carambole, the object is to carom off both object balls with at least three rail cushions being contacted before the contact of the cue ball with the second object ball. Three-cushion is a very difficult game. Averaging one point per inning is professional-level play and averaging 1.5 to 2 points is world-class play. An average of one means that for every turn at the table, a player makes 1 point and misses once, thus making a point on 50% of his or her shots. Panda’s Cue Sport is one of only 5 venues in South Africa with a carom table.
Carom Ranking events will soon take place at Panda’s Cue Sport and the respective participants could participate at the South African Championships. The South African Champion will participate at the Africa Championships. Carom (three-cushion Billiards) is currently one of the Cue Sport disciplines accepted and played at the The World Games 2021 in Birmingham. Could we see a South African in the African team at the World Games from PANDA’S? Keep an eye out in next week’s The Bulletin Newspaper for the follow up of this new and exciting eight part piece!
