Community mourns Hans
“A righteous man with a huge heart” That is how Koos Meyer (45) describes his father, Hans (70). Hans Meyer, or Short Hans Meyer as he was called, was killed Friday night, when he was shot after three robbers entered his home at about 21H30. The attack took place on his farm Vogelvlei, close to Charl Cilliers. A farm that Hans Meyer has lived on his entire life. Here he retired three years ago as a crop farmer and started to concentrate on cattle. “He was an expert in cattle” says Koos, “in particular the Drakensberger cattle.” “Hans was someone that was well known in the area and was loved by all that knew him regardless of their colour,” says Koos. Hans was a typical Afrikaans man and very sincere. He had an excellent relationship with his workers. Diabetes that was left untreated for a long time left Hans weak and frail. He could easily have been overpowered according to Koos. “They came to kill my father. I am extremely upset,” says Koos, “my father was not an aggressive person and one has to ask WHY? If they wanted to steal why did they not just do that?”
According to SAPS Provincial Spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, three armed men entered the house when Hans and his wife Ilse (69) were watching TV, demanding the keys to the safe. The first words they uttered to Hans and Ilse were “tonight we are going to kill you!” says Koos. The couple were taken to the bedroom and the robbers took the safe keys. No questions were asked. Koos explained that there was an attempt to access their safe about two weeks ago but the thieves could not open the safe. “We suspect that they wanted the firearms and that these were the same people.” The robbers shot Hans in the lounge after opening the safe. They also shot the two dogs that were in the house. Ilse received very rough treatment throughout the ordeal but is a strong woman and is coping well with the situation at the moment. The robbers took jewellery, firearms, cash, cellphone and a laptop before fleeing in Hans’s Ford Ranger. Five male suspects and one female suspect were arrested in connection with the attack on, and murder of
Hans Meyer. The five males aged between 35 and 39 and a female aged 35 will appear in Evander Magistrate’s Court on February 20. Three males will appear for murder and house robbery and two males and the female will appear for possession of firearms and stolen property. The police received information which led to the arrest of the five males and one female. The three who
Some of the recovered items
are charged with murder and house robbery were found with the boots and the firearm of the deceased. The other two were found in possession of the TV, Rifles and ammunition. All of them were arrested at Embalenhle (near Secunda). The female was arrested at Emzinoni (near Bethal) after the cellphone was tracked and found in her possession. The vehicle belonging to the deceased was found burnt at Emzinoni.

Hein Barnard court case - Protesters, wild accusations and threats SANCO/ANC protesters stormed court doors and threw around wild accusations and threats towards Hein Barnard at Bethal Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 14 February. Hein appeared in Bethal Regional Court, accused of being the mastermind behind a conspiracy to murder a ringleader of squatters that settled on his farm near Bethal last year. *The case was postponed to next month. The protest started with a small crowd, later growing in attendance and intensity as more protesters arrived with busses. They stormed the court entrance screaming “we want that man, we want him!” hardly noticing his co-accused, Bonginkosi Excellent Mnisi, Dunisani Sambo and Nomalanga Khumalo. Police and court officials had to stand their man to calm a few upset protesters. They were later escorted out of the court yard and the big gates were locked.
Protesters gathered at the gate, preventing Hein from leaving court grounds. A protester said on live video to the Bulletin “we want to send a message that you can’t chase people away from a farm, we will not allow that. People who are killing people have to be in jail. That f****ng white people, they must be arrested. He (Hein) showed us a gun at the gate (This while police is standing by and no evidence of this could be seen when The Bulletin was there). If he wants to shoot us, he can shoot us, we are not scared of guns.” Hein didn’t leave the grounds and protesters later gave up. Only after a meeting where ringleaders told the crowd they were not organized enough this time round, but next time they want more people there. It was obvious that not everyone was local and some clearly didn’t even know what they were protesting for. Some protesters told the Bulletin that they also want 30ha of his farm or else... *This bizarre story has a long history which includes stock theft, a
rejected eviction order, poisoned cattle, confusing police reports and conspiracies to commit murder. Read previous articles in the Bulletin dated 17 February 2017. Gwendie Venter
A brief history... -Hein apparently had problems with stock theft and said that it doesn’t help to open police reports. -91 of Hein’s cattle, worth approximately R1mil, were poisoned in 2016. -Hein filed for an eviction order to remove settlers living on his farm. This was rejected by court. -Police issued a statement that 5 people were arrested for conspiracy to murder Hein. -One of the arrested told police that Hein hired him to recruit hit men to kill the ringleader of a group of squatters on Hein’s farm. - Hein was arrested and granted bail of R30 000. The hit men Bonginkosi Excellent Mnisi and Dunisani Sambo were denied bail. Nomalanga Khumalo was granted bail.
Farm attacks are violent and gruesome Violent and gruesome farm attacks are on the increase and it is believed by the farming community that these attacks are politically motivated. Farmers getting burned with hot irons, boiling water thrown down their throats and even toddlers’ heads being smashed against walls are just some of the things that happens before people are either left to die or executed point blank. According to the Rome Research Institute of South Africa, the country has seen 42 attacks and 6 murders just in the first month of this year. February month has also been a very bloody month with 37 attacks and 3 murders in the first 15 days. Why do people attack farmers and farmworkers? Mostly to get hold of weapons, money and other valuables, but in many cases, it happens that nothing is stolen and it is suspected that it is purely done out of hate and revenge and the EFF, BLF and SA President Cyril Ramaphosa are not helping with their call to take land without compensation. Some South Africans fully agree that we are heading for a second Zimbabwe. Slogans like “kill the farmer, kill the boer”, “one settler, one bullet” and “one bullet, one boerekind” are freely
flashed on posters with absolutely no consequences whatsoever and it is no secret how certain political parties (EFF, BLF, ANC) feel about farmers. Katie Hopkins, independent British journalist, visited South Africa earlier this year to report on the attacks. She was detained at OR Tambo International because of her reporting but refuses to hide the truth away from the world. It also seems that some farmers are naive and are not taking warnings seriously and in some cases farm workers are involved and give out sensitive information. Lots of tears flow at the annual upgrading of the White Cross Monument (Witkruismonument). The monument is situated on a farm near Pietersburg and has a cross for every fallen farmer. The monument was started by Lita Fourie after her parents John and Bina Cross were brutally attacked and executed on 16 April 2000. The upgrading of the monument takes place again from 31 August – 2 September this year and falls together with the “Groot Trek Fees.” Contact The Bulletin for more information. Gwendie Venter

Terwyl ek my ma probeer bel het, is hy gebore.
Crime Snippets Former Municipal Director guilty of fraud Piet Retief: Former Director of Technical Services of Mkondo Municipality, Divhambele Ishmael Mandiwane (39), was found guilty and convicted for fraud, theft and money laundering in the Piet Retief Regional Court on Friday, 16 February. terwyl sy ‘n halfuur vir die ambulans gewag het.
I didn’t know I was pregnant.”
Of herders. Ek was selfs in skoolkonserte ‘n klip gewees. In Trichardt was daar tannie A,
In Olifantsfontein was daar ook so engel.
Sy kantoor was langs myne.

Kinders vind veilige hawe

is ‘n sinkkerk staande gebring.
Gwendie Venter

Regstelsel faal 7-jarige
Sasol donates to CPF VACANCIES VAKATURES
Sasol took hands in supporting the local Community Policing Forums by handing over 600 reflective bibs, as well as 300 LED torches. Maureen explained to the Bulletin that Sasol is concerned about the effectiveness of the CPF but realises that the lack of resources can hamper the CPF in their work. Therefore the need to make sure that the lack of resources is addressed. “The safety of Sasol’s employees and the communities where they live as well as communities close to Sasol operations are a big concern to Sasol” says Maureen, “Sasol is not in the policing business, therefore the support to our Police and CPF.”
Legal NOTICEs
“Safety is one of our top priorities and one of Sasol’s values” says Maureen Mboshane, General Manager: Sasol Secunda Corporate Affairs, “if not the top value”.
On the issue of a perceived upsurge in crime Maureen said that they assist by providing visible security services. They are identified by a lot of red in their uniforms. “We call them the Red Ants” laughed Maureen. They are patrolling some streets to ensure that the children can go to school in a safe environment for example. The large fenced off green area around the dams in Secunda is a prime example of this as crime is nearly non-existent in that area. Working close with crime intelligence agencies, high risk areas are identified and security deployed there. Sasol is not only providing security in certain areas, but is also providing Point Duty Officers to assist the community in negating the traffic during peak hours. Sasol was also involved with the fencing of the town to try and curb the random access into town. “The maintenance seems to be a problem as thieves will find opportunities to break the fence” says Maureen, “but hopefully this initiative of us (Sasol) will give an opportunity to repair the fence and catch some of the thieves.” Nathi Khumalo, Secretary of the CPF, says that they are very pleased with the donation and help of Sasol. “The more visible we are” says Nathi, “the more the community will see what we do and work with us” Nathi spoke to the Bulletin. Die gesprek het soos volg gelei: “Is it your baby’s birthday today?” – Beskuldigde “Ja,” – Nicoleen “He is f****ng ugly hey,”Beskuldigde “Sorry?” – Nicoleen “He is f****ng ugly. Even if you don’t like it, he is f****ng ugly” – Beskuldigde Die gesprek is hierna afgelui.

Stormwater drain poses hazard Govan Mbeki Municipality were lucky recently after an incident that could’ve ended in court after a mom stepped into a broken storm water drain with her babygirl in her arms. Alet Greeff was on her way to Clicks in Bethal on 27 January when she parked in the main road next to Mr. Price. When she got out of her vehicle, she walked to the passenger side to get her 11-month (now 12 months) old daughter Zamoné out of the car. “I took her out and as I turned around I landed with both my legs in a broken stormwaterdrain,” Alet said. Zamoné was in her arms at the time and fell with her head on the pavement. Fortunately no one
sustained serious injuries apart from a very hard fall, broken shoe and minor injuries. “It is absolutely ridiculous that the municipality leaves it just like this,” she said. It is clear that GMM does not care about the safety of their citizens. This is not an isolated case and if one looks at the bigger picture, this might be the most dangerous municipality to live in, health wise. It is well known that refuge lies in front of houses to rot for up to a month. Kinross dumping site is closed, Evander doesn’t have one and Secunda and Bethal’s is almost inaccessible. Evander residents are now literally living amongst an illegal
dumping site which is situated at the side of a main road. Power boxes are left unlocked (the ones that have doors anyway) and connections are made with an extension cord because the municipality is not able to fix a problem to a house in Secunda. Then we also have the non existing and out of order traffic lights, the taxi’s who think that road rules doesn’t apply to them and then everyone knows the situation with pot holes. Fire hazards in GMM are also skyrocketing but it seems like no one at GMM cares. Residents are paying millions each month. What exactly is it for, Is the question?

Dot Prinsloo, SANBS Donor Relation Practitioner (Left) and Sr. Sanet Kalse hands Roelof Stander his trophy and a small token of appreciation. The Jail-in/Jail-out that was held last year is a good way for SANBS to boost their blood levels as there is always a shortage of blood. The blood drive gets people to participate by “arresting” someone and then only “releasing” them once the “ransom” have been paid in blood donations. Roelof Stander from Eish restaurant was able to muster the most support during the blood drive. Roelof set the record for the most units of blood mustered by one person. He had 29 units of blood collected.SANBS surprised him with a floating trophy as well as a small token of appreciation. Blood shortages can mean the difference between life and death. Please support the South African national Blood Service (SANBS) with your donation. You might need blood next!

Weer ‘n Goedehoop eerste – Die Goegiespele!

Bowls business league starts It was a cacophony of noises and colour as 14 teams took to the bowling lawn on Wednesday night. Controlled chaos might be a better description. Teams consisted of two regular players and two business people. Once sanity started to creep in for the new players it all started to make sense. It was quite simple, get your bowl as close as possible to the white ball and if you are closest you get points. Or so it seems. Terms such as “Jack and Kitty”, which coincidently are the same thing, “You played the wrong Bias, a little less grass next time,” were shouted across the field at the bowlers, confusing the new ones even more. That was then followed by “that was a Potato Bowl, roll past the Hog Line” and “that is a Toucher”.
Slowly the players got down to business and played Bowls! The strange terminology, there isn’t too much, started to make sense and the shouts turned into shouts of encouragement rather than confusion. The occasional “you took the wrong bias” would bring scores of laughter from the surrounding teams and the player would stand, watching whilst grinning sheepishly. The night was enjoyed by everyone and by the look of things, competition will be getting tougher as the weeks progress. The business league is played over 7 weeks, weather permitting, with the final in April. The final date will be confirmed closer to the time. Please come and support the bowls this Wednesday evening 21 February, at Sasol Bowling club.

Sasol 1 retains 7’s title
Sasol 1 retained their 7’s title on Saturday. Sasol Rugby club hosted the Mpumalanga Rugby Union’s 7’s finals on their home grounds. A festive atmosphere reigned around the rugby field and the spectators really
enjoyed themselves. The harsh sun did not deter from some excellent 7’s rugby as all the teams played their hearts out. The Lowveld teams all withdrew from the tournament that placed some damper
on the expectations for the day but the Highveld boys did not disappoint with some good rugby. There were some very good individual plays that baffled the opposition teams and there were also some excellent
team efforts. Sasol 1 displayed good team spirit and won all their games. They Beat Highveld 1 by 49-0 in the final. Well done to all that participated and congratulations to Sasol 1 on retaining the trophy.
Breezeless day sees good golf On a hot and sunny Saturday morning with no breeze to speak of, Walker Park Golf club hosted a league match in the third round against Graceland Country Club. Both local teams compete in the senior league for players over the age of fifty. League teams consist of six players to a side playing in pairs. The format of play is better ball with the best score per pair to count for each hole. The team with the most betterball points at the end of the round is declared the winner. The Walker Park team consisted of: Okkie Smit (captain), Lukas Potgieter, John Berning, Danie Heese, Mossie Ouruque and
Koos Swart. Graceland Country Club was represented by Peet van Zyl (captain), Chris van Rensburg, Francois Malherbe, Danie Kruger, Daniel Nyathela and Frik Hennop. According to Blits, (Chris Janse van Rensburg) green keeper for Walker Park, the course is in great shape with the rough cut fairly short. Although the greens may be a bit slow with 9.8 meter on the stint meter, they are in perfect condition with only a few greens showing dollar spots as a result of the hot weather experienced lately. As the visiting team, Graceland had the honour to tee off
first from the tenth tee. This abnormality is because of a fun day competition held for pairings of golfer and nongolfers which would have held up play for the league matches. Okkie Smit, captain of Walker Park, said that it was a tough competition that was contested to the very last holes. Although the competition was fiercely contested, the matches were played in great spirit. Graceland walked away with the honours with a result of four matches to two. All team members declared it a most enjoyable day and whished each other well for the remainder of the competition.
