Mayor appears in court The mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality appeared before Magistrate Senekal on Wednesday 17 October 2018. Unfortunately, the Magistrate had to attend court in Charl Cilliers and asked that the case be postponed until 28 November 2018. On the morning of Wednesday 20 June, Jane Gwebu, a municipal official, laid charges against Councillor Thandi Ngxonono, GMM’s executive mayor. In tears, Gwebu retold the story of her assault at the mayor’s hands. “She sent her secretary to call me to her office, where she ordered me to sit down,” Gwebu said. Gwebu continued to say that the mayor was “hot-headed” and swore at her, calling her derogatory names and even slapping Ms Gwebu. “She told me that she is the mayor whether I like it or not and she is tired of me going around and talking about her to our other colleagues,” Gwebu said. When the news hit the public, social media was abuzz with comments on Councillor Ngxonono’s character. One social media user said that “she is well known for being a bully”, while others said that she has always had a temper, as far back as her days as a teacher at KI Twala Secondary school, where she allegedly used to hit her students. The general attitude of the public indicated that readers were not at all surprised. In the Eastern Cape a mayor was immediately suspended when there were allegations and charges laid for assault. The ANC in Govan Mbeki Municipality rather showed their support for the mayor. The ANC Women’s league is strangely quiet about the incident. There had been continual pressure from opposition parties to remove Cllr Tandiwe Ngxonono from office. “There were several occasions where political parties wanted the mayor out due to no confidence in her,” said Cllr Aranda Nel-Buitendach of the FF+, “She does not show any leadership towards GMM and the ratepayers. She is supposed to lead by example but since she came into power our Eskom and Rand Water bills do not get paid.” Cllr Ciska Jordaan, Caucus leader of the Democratic Alliance made the following statement: “It is to our disappointment as the Democratic Alliance that the case was postponed to the 28th of November. It is alleged that she had slapped an official during an attempt to apparently reprimand her. The fact that this should have been a mandate of the then Acting Municipal Manager, solely indicates that she has violated the code
of conduct for councillors stipulated in the systems act. In addition, we condemn in the utmost the allegations of a violent act against a woman, that she is accused of having committed. The DA has repeatedly called for her immediate suspension since the case has been opened against her. We are of the opinion that she is unable to carry out her duties impartially as the leader of this municipality, while it is alleged that she has assaulted a person and while she has this pending court case hanging above her head. However, the ANC has consistently disregarded our proposals of suspension and refuses to look into the breach of the code of conduct. Violence within the ANC is apparent throughout the country and seems to be rising closer to the 2019 NPE. Besides, this matter further impacts the negative image of the Govan Mbeki Municipality It is clear that the rule of law does not exist within the ruling party, that there is no accountability for the actions of their members and public representatives and that this is a
clear depiction of the manner that they poorly govern. We sympathise with all victims of abuse and will continue to follow the case against the executive mayor and raise awareness on the matter. The people of Govan Mbeki deserve exemplary leadership that will put its people first by living out the values of Freedom, Fairness, Opportunity and Diversity for All.” Voices within the ANC are now starting to surface calling for her removal. SAPROMO have submitted a new motion of no confidence asking for her removal. This is expected to serve before the council in a sitting on 25 October 2018. Cllr Hlolweni, President of SAPROMO, said in an earlier statement: “These allegations do not just tarnish her image, but that of the municipality as well. The municipality is already in shame for several things happening within the institution, and this is dragging the municipality further down. It is said that the mayor was involved with employees, which she shouldn’t
have done in the first place. She is not an administrator, but a political head. It is not for her to reprimand employees as they are not reporting to her. Her’s is to report every kind of bad behaviour to the municipal manager, who should deal with his employees. This means some people do not understand their roles and it is very embarrassing. If the head is confused the whole body cannot operate properly. In the meantime, SAPROMO suggest that an acting mayor is appointed to give Ngxonono some time to deal with the court case. We cannot have the leader who has a cloud hanging over her. We love the current mayor as a person, but we cannot sacrifice the integrity of this institution.” It is clear that storms are brewing within the ANC as well as the council as a whole. Tensions are running high and every council meeting is turning into a big verbal fight as the ANC refuses to adhere to suggestions by opposition parties, steamrolling their own agenda over good governance and logic.

Telkom Technical Services Robbed Business Robbery occurred at Telkom Technical Services Evander at approximately 01:00 on Friday morning. Five unknown African males removed a cement slab from the back wall to gain entrance to the premises. A security guard from Imvula Security company, Mr.Thembela Tshotana, was in his guardroom when the suspects entered the guardroom and one suspect pointed a firearm at him. The firearm looked like a pistol, they told him to be quiet or they will kill him. The suspects pulled the victim’s beanie over his face and took him outside and tied his hands behind his back with a cable tie. He was made to sit next to a tree outside the premises. The suspects allegedly broke the wooden door of the main building with what seemed like a crowbar. The suspects went into every office and searched for property and keys of motor vehicles, as numerous Open Serve bakkies were on the premises. The suspects proceeded to force open the storeroom door and other doors on the premises and allegedly took two computers and screens. Telkom still has to confirm the make of the computers and what other property was taken. The suspects found keys and tried to start nearly every bakkie with the keys, eventually they started a Ford Ranger with Reg no: DS17NH GP, a marked Open Serve bakkie with a canopy in which they sped away. The victim heard the vehicle speeding away, stood up and started screaming for help. Another security guard, from across the road, heard the victim screaming and went to assist. The SAPS was contacted. Lieutenant Sergeant Khumalo and Capt Mathibe attended the crime scene as station duty officers as well as the
branch commander Warrant Officer Gloy. The Ford Ranger had a Tracker and could be located. The suspects were wearing gloves, but their faces were uncovered. They also spoke Sotho. The value of the property stolen

GMM enforces bylaws in Kinross On Thursday, 18 October, the Govan Mbeki Municipality and the Kinross police teamed up in an effort to ensure the town’s shops all have valid licences to run a business. The effort started at 08:00 on Thursday morning with a briefing at the police station. One of the GMM councillors, who wishes to remain anonymous, briefed the police on the route and their role in the operation. Media houses were requested not to post
anything online or go live with this operation as this would alarm the community of what the plan entailed. The first stop on the route was the park in Thistle Grove. A very successful clean up of municipal lavatories ensued. The police found, in one of the rooms, that someone was using it as a home for themselves. In one of the other rooms it was speculated that it could be used as a drug house because of the evidence to
that effect was lying about in the room. The fleet of police vehicles moved on to town after cleaning and removing everything. In town, in a tin house, the business owner was asked to present the licence of his business and his licence to sell goods. None of these could be presented and the owner was asked to remove all personal belongings from the shop and to lock its doors. The owner of the shop also lived inside the shop although he denied this. The day was a huge success for the Govan Mbeki Municipality and the Kinross police squad. 4 Illegal immigrants were arrested and 10 shops closed until licences could be issued. Some of the shops were shut by the time the clean-up operation reached them, as they must have caught wind of what was happening. – AnÊ Prinsloo

Ds Marius Britz Idillies. My woonplek die afgelope paar jaar. Ek dink aan Neil Diamond: “Well I’m New York City born and raised / But nowadays I’m lost between two shores / L.A.’s fine, but it ain’t home / New York’s home / But it ain’t mine no more / “I am”... I cried / “I am”... said I / And I am lost and I can’t even say why / Leavin’ me lonely still.”
‘n Tuiste is ‘n plek waar jy nie hoef uit te roep: “I am, I said” nie. As hy daar is.” ‘n Tuiste is ‘n plek waar jy weet: as ek vanaand gaan staan met my kar, kan ek vir Org of oom Hendrik of oom Willie bel. Of twintig ander. ‘n Adres is anders. Daar weet jy, as ek nou siek word, of my kar breek langs die pad, is my moeilikheid geboek.

Voorwaardelik weer eens ʼn suksesvolle Projek Suikerbekkie.

Terrell Family seeks answers from hospital On 18 September a life was taken during a dreadful accident. A truck hit a motorcycle and Rebecca Terrell died in hospital. A month after this tragic accident Colin Terrell, Rebecca’s father, wants answers as to why he and his daughter and Rebecca’s sister, Kimberley, were not allowed to be with her during her time in the hospital. Also, why she was not examined properly when she was complaining about pain and still conscious when the doctor saw her. Colin and Kimberley arrived at the hospital after being informed of the accident and at first were denied entry into the hospital. When finally being allowed to see Rebecca, she was complaining of not being able to breath. Rebecca’s leg was broken in two places and her shoulder was crushed and splintered. Rebecca was lying in the emergency room for approximately 45 minutes before the doctor saw her. After returning from x-rays, Kimberley asked the doctor if an external abdominal examination had been done. Only then did the doctor do the examination and replied that she had no fluids in her stomach. She complained about pain but it fell on deaf ears until Kimberley, Rebecca’s sister, asked the hospital staff to give her something for the pain. All the staff did was to put a cast on her leg. Colin and Kimberley were shown out of the hospital and told that they had to come back at 15:00 when it was visiting hours again. Upon arrival at the hospital they were escorted to the

Colin had to go to the police station in Trichardt and ask the police for the post-mortem report, because the hospital had refused to give him the report. Now the hard questions must be asked: Why was Colin denied to see his own daughter’s post-mortem report and why was the ambulance shown away at one hospital and sent to another with a critical patient? According to an anonymous source: “Protocol says to take the patient to the closest, most appropriate facility. If the facility is a private facility, the patient would be stabilised and then sent to a public hospital should they not have medical aid. 2. Post-mortems are usually released to the SAPS. The next of kin can request a copy once the police docket has been finalised. In specific unnatural deaths reports are only released to SAPS.” - Ané Prinsloo
Cheaper parts and services loom New proposals by the Competition Commission will make it cheaper to service your car and cut the price of car parts and insurance premiums. This is according to a report in the City Press, which said South African motorists will be the biggest winners of these proposals. The proposals drafted by the Competition Commission are aimed at addressing anti-competitive practices in the car repairs and parts industry. As it currently stands, motorists have to service and repair their cars at approved dealers or service repair agents. If a motorist does not adhere to this rule, they will void their warranty and will forfeit their right for free repairs should something go wrong. All equipment and accessories also have to be approved by the vehicle manufacturers, which puts them in full control of the car servicing and repairs industry. New rules coming The Competition Commission’s proposals will break the car manufacturers’ hold on the motoring industry by allowing car owners to service or repair their vehicle at any repair company without voiding their warranty.
This, the Competition Commission said, will result in more choice and lower prices for car services, repairs and parts. Because of the lower parts and repair prices, it can also lead to lower vehicle insurance premiums. “I believe it will have a positive effect. Cheaper prices and better service. Work will be done more quickly too as there’ll be more choice,” Wynand van Vuuren, spokesperson for King Price, said. Big win for Right to Repair Campaign. These new proposals are a big win for the Right to Repair Campaign (R2RC), which fights for consumers to have their vehicles serviced, maintained and repaired at a workshop of their choice. “There is a need for a fair and competitive regulatory environment that enables freedom of choice for the consumers and that gives aftermarket SMEs a chance to stay in business,” the R2RC said. “Only strong, entrepreneurial competition will result in advantageous pricing for consumers and ensure that local businesses can continue to provide quality service in the neighbourhood they serve and support.” mybroadband.co.za

SANBS and Global Citizen partner to end critical blood shortages Donors can earn tickets to the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 JOHANNESBURG, 11 October 2018 - The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and Global Citizen today announced a partnership to highlight the importance of donating blood #ForLife. Global Citizen will partner with SANBS to motivate young South Africans to donate blood in order to earn tickets to the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, a free-ticketed event on Sunday, 2 December 2018 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. Most South Africans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Alarmingly, less than 1% of South Africans regularly donate blood. One person donating blood can save a minimum of three lives. Adding to this, a whole generation is
being lost to the donor community due to aging and accompanying health challenges. With an older generation unable to donate, millennials and younger adults are increasingly crucial to our country’s future blood sustainability. “Despite SA’s youth forming almost 50% of the population, we are critically low on donors. To increase donations, we have partnered with Global Citizen to engage the youth to donate between now and 22 November 2018 to earn tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100. It is our sincere hope that they will continue to donate once the Mandela 100 campaign is over and truly prove themselves as the generation that saves lives,” says Silungile Mlambo, spokesperson for The South African National Blood
Service. “Health is a basic need and those living in extreme poverty rely on government resources to help them when necessities like blood transfusions are needed. Reserves in South Africa are at critically low levels, those who are not able to go to private hospitals suffer the most. We are thrilled to support this initiative and encourage Global Citizens to make regular blood donations their responsibility. It just takes 20 minutes, and with blood drives all over the country, it’s never been easier. What’s more, one unit of blood can potentially save three lives,” said Thato Noinyane, Global Citizen Partnerships Manager. To earn tickets to the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 on 02 December
2018, donors can take action and give critically needed blood. Participants can visit any SANBS donor centre or mobile drive in South Africa until 22 November 2018. By donating blood during this time, SANBS blood donors stand to earn two tickets each, including flights (for donors outside of Gauteng), accommodation with dinner and breakfast and transfers to and from the Festival. For full details on how and where to donate to earn your tickets, visit https://sanbs.org.za/ . Winners will be contacted via telephone on 26 November 2018. For more information, please engage with SANBS and Global Citizen on Twitter and Facebook, using #ForLife @ TheSANBS #GlobalCitizenFestivalSA #BetheGeneration

Fit City made their emblem a white ribbon that represented lung cancer and the words “Aletta this is for you”. “It was a sad moment when we started the race without her and we all had a tear in our eyes” said Emily Erasmus Aletta lived 14 months with the cancer after the doctors said that she only had six weeks to live. “I have Lung Cancer but am not suffering” Aletta always said. Sadly, the race went by far too quick. She was one who we all loved but unfortunately, she ran out of breath! This one’s for You!

Warrior Princesses brace the cold Saturday, 20 October, blew in princesses of all ages along with rain and cold. The rain and cold did not leave them hesitating. The ladies, young and old, braved the obstacle course set up by the event planners. 900 Ladies participated in the event. There were puddles of mud, mud heaps to climb, a slippery slide and a makeshift mist rain body wash. At one point in the obstacle course, the ladies had to climb into a mud puddle and swim underneath the water under a net without using their hands to push the net up.
After the underwater experience, they had to climb a mud heap and slide off the other side, once again falling into the muddy water. Ladies had their mascara and lipstick smudged all over their faces and perfectly coiffed hair was wet, flat and all over the place. Despite looking like terrified and sad clowns there were big smiles all around. The Laerskool Goedehoop Warrior Princess 2018 was a spectacular event and enjoyed by all!

Elkeen met hulle eie temas uit bekende kinder films: Sneeuwitjie: “Hey Ho”, “Sing”: “Shake it off” en “Hop” se “I love candy”. Die drie Gr 1 klasse het: “Flinstones”, “Juicy Wiggle” van “Alvin and the Chipmunks” en “Footloose” aangebied.
DADS Cyclers stop at Sasol N17 Filling Station Most people dread sitting in a car for three hours to get to their destination. Imagine doing that on a bicycle and that is just to get to the first stop! But not the DADS (Dedicated Ambassadors Delivering Support to Children in Need) Cycle Group! They decided to change the group’s name to an acronym as not only dads are cycling but also women and children. They are taking on the arduous road to Durban from Johannesburg via Standerton and New Castle. Once close to Durban, the group will stop at Fulton School for the Deaf in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands, where they will have a tea party with the children and teach them how to ride a bike. To ride a bike as a deaf individual is already challenging because the part of the inner ear responsible for balancing is the part that is absent in deafness. To balance on a bicycle is a huge achievement for these kids. The group has been in existence for 14 years and has been growing steadily
since its inception. It started with a group of dads who saw friends who needed support with their special needs children. They were all having a cup of… let’s just call it tea. The first ever journey was decided upon and they would all get on their bicycles and get sponsors. There were not enough sponsors and they all pitched in. Now, 14 years later, many millions have been raised for various charities. They have also inspired local businesses wherever they stop over, to give back to their local community. All the charities are focused around children. All monies raised have been given to charities involving children as that has always been the main goal since the group started. Sasol N17 and Steers involvement with DADS had a ripple effect on the community when Steers entertained children from less fortunate backgrounds. Sasol N17 and Steers has been sponsoring them their food and drinks.– Ané Prinsloo

Graceland Annual Ryder Cup Competition The Graceland Ryder cup competition was initiated by Lucky Kgatle in 2016. He donated a trophy for the winning team. The Albatrosses were the first team to win the trophy. The Eagles, however, bounced back in 2017 and took away the trophy. Cold, windy and overcast weather saw about 44 players teeing off in the third annual Graceland Ryder Cup competition. Two teams, the Albatrosses and Eagles, competed over two days for the coveted trophy. The course was in good nick with the rough fairly short to help speed-up play. (Not having to search too long for wayward balls). The greens were hollow-tined and sanded and played slower than usual. The Eagles, captained by Riaan Burger and playing in red shirts, tried to retain the trophy against the Albatrosses playing in blue shirts and captained by Marthinus Venter. On Saturday the teams played four ball better ball and at the end of the day the, the Eagles team of Riaan Burger enjoyed a comfortable lead of 15 points to 7 over the Albatrosses of Marthinus Venter. In the evening a
prize giving was held where novelty prizes for nearest to the pin on the short holes and the longest drives were handed out, as well as the first twelve placings for the day. Charlene Olivier entertained the players during the prize giving and donated some of her CDs. In contrast to Saturday’s unpleasant weather, sunny open skies and a mild breeze, greeted the players when they teed off in the foursomes round of the competition where players played alternative shots. The foursomes round ended in an 11 all draw. After a halfway house, sponsored by Graceland, the singles matches were played according to handicaps. The Eagles won the singles matches by 25 points to 9. The overall score came to 51 points to 37 in favour of the Eagles. The Eagles have beaten the Albatrosses 2 years to 1. Riaan Burger took possession of the trophy for the Eagles. Riaan thanked all players of both teams for the spirit in which the competition was played. Visiting players from Walker Park golf club were also thanked for their participation. Photos and report by Jan Ferreira

Fightstar success for Dominators Den Fightstar 36 was a huge success! The atmosphere was electric at Graceland as the fighters prepared for their fights. Saturday morning saw the weigh-ins in the arena that looked far from finished. Only the cage loomed over everybody as they scrambled to get everything ready. Chairs were still scattered around and banners littered the arena. It was a different story altogether when people started to arrive for the fights. Lights were dimmed, illuminating the cage as it stood ominously in the middle of the arena, leaving visions of things to come to one’s imagination. Spectators were bustling by, trying to find their seats in the darkened arena. The tension started to build up as the fighters warmed up behind the scenes. The noise inside the arena was increasing as more and more spectators arrived. Then the first call, 15 minutes to go! 10 minutes to go! First Fight! Heinrich Wiese (of Dominator’s Den - DD) faced off against Christopher Matukane. Matukane reversed a massive takedown and landed with Heindrich Wiese in a rear naked choke. Christopher’s steady squeeze wins him the first fight of Fightstar 36. Stephan Diedericks (DD) faced JP Albos in the second fight of the evening. Stefan “The Berzerker” Diedericks beat his opponent in 1 min and 21secs in a fast-paced fight. Hendrik van der Merwe (DD)
faced G.P. van de Venter in the third bout. GP delivered a vicious stand-up game to earn his win against Hendrik via TKO in the second round. Next up was Kerwyn “ Dr Kush” de Waal (DD) and John “Butcher Boy” Ledwaba. Kerwyn beat his opponent with a guillotine choke after a nailbiting fight. The night started to look good for the fighters of Dominator’s Den. Vince “His Majesty” Nkosi fought a tough fight against Mthunze and were the first athletes to go all three rounds that night, each displaying their takedown and boxing abilities. Vince was titled the winner via unanimous decision by the judges. No local fighters were involved in the next three fights. Despite an excellent defence by Nicholas Hwende, Shannon van Tonder managed to construct a relentless rear naked choke. Shannon took the victory in the second round following some competitive ground game. Qhayiya Pefile and Jordan Chetty had a fight that had it all. Excellent striking, grappling and reverses eventually took their scrap to the ground where Qhayiya finished it with a TKO. Herman van der Westhuizen and Peace Nguphane went the full three rounds, breaking the silence in the second round. Eventually declaring Peace the victor via split decision. In the first of the main fights, Paul “Macpanda” Rich survived
an infamous throw from Donald Mabusela and managed to use a guillotine choke. Paul subdued Donald in the second round of their fight, following a series of fast pace striking. Smit “Malboer” Steyn (DD) unleashed a fury of strikes from the start of the first round against Denis “Black Jesus” Mashinini, earning him the victory via TKO. Malboer wasted no time putting a stop to this bout after 1 min 45 secs in the first round. The next fight saw a tremendous kick that put an early end to the fight after Dimitri “The Russian” Fogg controlled the first round. Eliezer Kubanza landed a flawless head kick, winning him the fight via knock out. Cedrick and British were up next. Cedrick Mbala managed to land the mount on British and began the ground and pound, finally winning via TKO in the third round. With three fights to go, it was the turn of Julio Plaatjies and Gift Walker that met for a second time. This time, however, Julio walked away with the Flyweight Title after winning with a rear naked choke. The second last fight of the night was the highlight for the Secunda fans. Paul “Piksteel” Ronge and Nathaniel Komane went head to head for the interim Featherweight Title. After several deadly strikes from Nathaniel, Paul finally won the fight via a rear naked choke. Piksteel won his first title: Featherweight Champion! Piksteel is definitely Secunda’s favourite son! The final fight was between Nkosi Ndebele and Francois Meyer. During a full five rounds, Nkosi Ndebele and Francois Meyer displayed an excellent mix of striking and grappling to finally determine the Fightstar Lightweight Title. Francois remains the champion of this division. Dominator’s Den fighters won 5 of their 7 fights! Well done to Coach Cedric “The Dominator” Doyle and his boys!
