Protests erupted in Lebohang!
Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin -
Violent protests erupted on Sunday night in Lebohang. Protestors pelted cars with rocks and closed off the R50 between the N17 and Leandra town. A number of tyres were set alight creating an eerie sight, changing the area into what resembles a mini war zone. There was a large police presence and protestors were dispersed a number of times just to reappear elsewhere. Rubber bullets were used as protestors scattered in every direction. SAPS vehicles would follow a short distance to make sure that the protestors dispersed. The reason for the protests is stated as
protests against poor service delivery as well as against Eskom for cutting power. Leandra is supplied by Eskom directly and is not affected by the Secunda cut-offs that are threatening Secunda and Embalenhle.
Crime snippets
Protests still raged on at 06H00 on Monday morning. The Bulletin reported on possible protest action in Embalenhle from 04H00 Monday but by sunrise, there were no reports of any protests in Emba. intersection. When the car stopped, another man emerged wielding a knife and threatened the driver. The driver exited the vehicle and the two men drove off with the car. No arrests have been made yet.

MPUMALANGA: Two accused, Fatima Portia Shekwa (24) and Jabulani Johnson Mapiyeye(50), were released on R1000.00 bail each by Nelspruit Magistrate`s Court on Monday 16 April 2018 after they were arrested for fraud by Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit on Friday 13 April 2018. In March 2018 the accused number one Shekwa made an application to purchase a vehicle, Nissan Micra, from one of the garages around Nelspruit to the value of R178 000.00. The accused submitted her documents including a payslip and bank documents to accused number two Mapiyeye, who is a sales executive. It came to light that accused number one Shekwa did not qualify to purchase the said vehicle. Mapiyeye told Shekwa that he is going to organise a payslip and a bank statement so that she could qualify. Accused number two Mapiyeye, created and submitted a fraudulent payslip and bank statement to one of the prominent banks in the Country. Information was received by Hawks members who acted swiftly and sting operation conducted which lead to the arrested of the two accused on Thursday 12 April 2018 immediately after the accused Shekwa came to collect the vehicle at the garage. The case is postponed to 28 May 2018 for further investigation.

Crippling nationwide bus strike! A crippling nationwide bus strike that affected service in Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) started on Wednesday 18 April. Protesters blockaded the entrance to the Megabus depot near Osisweni. Protests continued as negotiations were underway in Gauteng. The strike means that there will be a significant increase in cars on the road countrywide because bus travellers will use minibus taxis or their own vehicles to get to work and back. South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) spokesperson Zanele Sabela said Satawu, the Transport and Omnibus Workers’ Union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and the Tirisano Transport Workers’ Union had been negotiating since January. The negotiations have been facilitated by the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council (SARPBC) with the

employer associations, the Commuter Bus Employers’ Organisation and South African Bus Employers’ Association. This is what is at stake: • Unions want a 12% across the board wage increase; • They want the minimum basic wage to be R8 000 per month; • They want full pay for dual drivers on long distance; • Unions want night shift to be between 16:00 and 06:00, instead of the current 20:00 to 03:00. • Employers are offering a three-year across-the-board increase - 7% for year one, 7.25% for year two, and 7.5% for year three. Workers also want to be compensated for “sleeping out”, and want “decent” accommodation. The continued strike action comes as a result of failed wage negotiations between unions and employers over
the course of a two-day meeting with the Commission of Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Unions refuse to accept an 8% offer for this year and a further 8.5% for next year, saying the offer includes dropping other demands which include among others full pay for dual drivers and payment relating to night shift hours. “The bus strike is continuing, we are intensifying the action,” South African Transport Workers and Allied Worker’s Union (Satawu) spokesperson Zanele Sabela said. “We are calling on non-unionised members to down tools in order to put more pressure on employers to give us what we want.” Commuters should brace themselves for more delays as there’s still no end in sight for the national bus strike. A call for government intervention is being supported by the South African
National Civic Organisation (Sanco). “Though the inconvenience affects hundreds of thousands of commuters that are bearing the brunt of the standoff, it is the poor working class commuting daily to and from work due to apartheid spatial planning that are the hardest hit as they cannot afford any alternative to the public transport system,” said Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu on Saturday. The negotiations continued on Monday.

Ds Marius Britz Kris Kristofferson sing: “There is something in a Sunday that makes a body feel alone”. Inderdaad. Sondae is refleksietyd, seertyd, verlangtyd, alleentyd vir baie mense. Vroegoggend al sien jy dit. In stede, in dorpe, op die platteland. As jy dan iewers heen moet ry, is die strate stil, meestal verlate.
I don’t want to go to work. Wake me up when Friday comes”. Hulle lag luidrugtig. Die een snaakser as die ander een. In die hoek sit ‘n ou en kitaar speel en sing: “How can you tell me that you’re lonely? Let me take you by the hand, and lead you through the streets of London. I’ll show you something to make you change your mind”

Sasol hands over cheque to Cansa On Tuesday, 27 March, Sasol handed over a donation of R60, 000 to the local Cancer Association. The funds were raised through its employee volunteering initiative, Sasol for Good, where employees heartily participated in the CANSA Shavathon campaign that ran from 01 – 02 March 2018. The purpose of the CANSA Shavathon is to show support to those affected by cancer. Over the past seven years, Sasol Secunda employees have actively participated in the annual Shavathon by shaving, spraying their hair and donating funds. This year’s campaign was mostly exciting as one of Sasol employees, Tanya Toerien, a team assistant from Supply Chain, donated her hair during the event. She had been growing it for three years with the sole intention to donate it to CANSA. CANSA uses donated hair to make wigs for women undergoing chemotherapy. Tanya was inspired by her sister, Angelique, who has done the same several times. “My hair is now shorter than shoulder length, but it can grow back. I am honoured to help cancer patients in this manner,” said Tanya. The local CANSA representative, Giséle Bosman, expressed her gratitude to Sasol for the donation and mentioned that the donated money will enable them to render the basic care and support services to patients in the community. “The amount raised is evidence
that Sasol and its employees are committed in making a difference in people’s lives, through support
of various initiatives that are implemented for the benefit of communities around its operations,”
said Rethabile Ndjibu, Senior Manager Communication and Brand Management, Sasol Secunda.

Business women master Facebook
The online sphere is no longer just about socialising and staying in touch with old friends. Social media has become a strong marketing tool for businesses and is increasingly important in staying in touch with one’s audience. Taking this into consideration, business women of the TEKS area gathered at a digital marketing workshop hosted by the South African Council for Business Women (SACBW), with guest speaker Henriette Brand, a digital marketing specialist and chairlady of SACBW’s Centrurion Branch. The workshop, held on Thursday
19 April, touched on strategies that seek to improve a business’s online presence, as well as increase engagement with one’s audience, with particular focus on Facebook as a platform. Shimona Mariah, an organiser of the event, called it “overall well-attended”. “We are definitely going to have a follow-up,” she said. “We hope to include Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn next time.” The follow-up workshop will be a full day event, and attendees expressed immense interest at the idea, set to be held in May.

Accidents 101 The roads are rife with accident scenes and safety becomes more and more of a concern when it comes to driving. Although there are many ways to avoid accidents, what do you do when one has already happened? Panic is a natural reaction, especially when you don’t know what to do. So here are a few tips and guidelines in the case of a roadside emergency. You’re the first one on the scene. Here’s what to do - Park at a safe distance, as far off the road as possible, and turn on your hazard lights and headlights
- Phone emergency services - you will be required to provide your phone number, location and details of the accident, and whether there is a fire - Don’t attempt to move any injured persons, as this could cause further injury. An exception is if their life is endangered by not being moved, for example, if the car has caught fire or if they are blocking traffic in the middle of the road You’ve just hit a pedestrian. Here’s how not to get into more trouble than you already are. - Even if there are no serious injuries and the pedestrian agrees that there

are no hard feelings, the police need to be notified of the incident and an Accident Report should be opened at a police station. This needs to be done within 24 hours. An absence of injuries on the spot does not mean that the person may not experience complications in future. If you do not report the incident, you may be charged at a later stage. - Accident Reports should also be made if a driver hits an animal on the road, as animals with owners count as property and such an event qualifies as damage to property. - If the road accident is not reported within 24 hours, and no reasonable
explanation is given for late-reporting, the driver must be issued with a Written Notice to Appear in Court. You’re driving near an accident scene. Here’s how not to cause another one - Remain focused and notice changes in the traffic pattern around the accident - Look for personnel and signs directing traffic - If instructed to stop, do so immediately and do not keep coasting slowly - Do not stare at the accident scene and flashing lights while your vehicle is in motion Sources: Arrive Alive, AA, ER24, SAPS

Sasol making strides in environmental health Sasol has placed its Sasol Air Quality Offset Project in the pipeline for residents of eMbalenhle and Lebohang. The project’s goals include RDP house insulation and a coal stove exchange, both of which will “assist and enable households to have a better and healthier quality of life by reducing household emissions caused by solid fuel burning”. The coal stove exchange will see residents receiving LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) stoves and gas heaters, as well as two LPG cylinders to replace the coal stoves that they are currently using. Sasol then seeks to take the old coal stoves, destroy them and recycle the metal. To ensure heat retention, polyurethane foam is sprayed on the ceilings of the
homes for insulation. The project is one of many initiated by Sasol, in light of concerns raised about the company’s emissions and their effect on the environment. The use of solid fuel burning (as in the case of coal stove use) is the biggest source of pollution in local communities. With winter approaching, this pollution is well on the rise. For the safety of its recipients, Sasol also requires affected households to attend LPG training that will equip them with the knowledge and procedures associated with operating their new equipment. Sasol cited a need to “to improve the lives of its fence line communities” as one of the main reasons for the implementation of the offset project.

It could have been there to make sure that the parents and grandparents that needed help could be attended to but this was not confirmed. The small children were screaming with laughter as they took part. All the activities were adapted to fit nursery kids. They took part in the following activities: High jump, Javelin, Hurdles, Wheelbarrow
pushing, Shotput, Bike race and Sprints. Curro Castle is called castle to fit into the fantasy world of children where every child is a prince or princess. Curro Castle places a lot of emphasis on sensory play and gross motor development. A lot of educational toys are used to play. The day ended after everyone had an opportunity to partake. Medals, a small "sweetie" bag as well as a certificate were given to every learner that was there on Saturday. As all headed home some heads started bobbing and soon a number of children were fast asleep. It was a day enjoyed by all. Let everyone storm the castle again next year.

The South African 9 Ball title was played for the first time in 2000, 18 years later and Mr David Anderson does it again. Will one see the comeback of one of the greatest cue sport talents in SA over the past 20 years? Will athletes like Wetsi Morake & Ishmael Mthethwa be participating more on the 9 foot table and follow the foot steps of Richard Halliday? Head Referee Kobus Kirstein and his 2 assistants Jacques Muller and Lolita Kritzinger did tremendous work during the tournament. Sharlene Erasmus and Sylvia Pieterse from Mpumalanga Cue Sport needs special mentioning on the capturing of live scores onto Cue Score. Without the support structures no successfull tournament can be held.
