Sasol selling Mining?
B
loomberg news led with a breaking story on Sasol selling its coal-mining business. The information was obtained from several unknown sources, but was not confirmed nor denied by Sasol at that time. “We do not wish to comment at this stage on which assets have been earmarked for divestment, since they form a part of a disciplined and confidential M&A process,” it said. “Sasol will update the market as and when appropriate regarding progress on the asset review process.” Bloomberg reported as Sasol’s response. The following are excerpts from the initial Bloomberg report: “The company will begin a formal sales process in the coming weeks, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the information isn’t public yet. The mining business had a turnover of R20bn in the 2018 financial year, according to the company’s financial report, mostly from internal sales to Sasol’s other operations. The company would plan to sign a coalpurchase agreement with whoever buys the asset said one of the people Sasol announced a long-term review process in November 2017 that would involve disposing of some assets at prices that ensure value for the company, it said in an emailed response to questions, while declining to comment directly on a possible mine sale. The mine sale plan comes as Sasol grapples with cost overruns and delays at its giant US chemicals project. Selling its coal mines may also help Sasol reduce its environmental liabilities at a time when more investors are focusing on how businesses affect climate change. The Lake Charles chemical plant in Louisiana, which is starting up this year, will transform Sasol’s production mix to focus on chemicals. Yet the company has lurched from one setback to the
next, with the project now estimated to cost as much as $12.9bn, about 50% more than initially planned. Sasol’s shares have tumbled 48% in the past 12 months. Besides the cost overruns and start-up delays, the company has also twice postponed its annual financial results while it completes an investigation into what went wrong at Lake Charles.” Several other mainstream publications picked up on the article and reported on it in their publications. The Bulletin contacted Sasol for an official response to the allegations. Alex Anderson, Senior Manager, Group External Communication, Sasol Limited responded with the following Statement: “As part of our long term, value-based strategy announced in November 2017, we confirmed that we had commenced an asset review process to ensure that all assets in our global portfolio deliver against our strategy. This process forms a key part of the asset portfolio optimisation programme. In May this year, we confirmed that we are targeting the disposal of assets which have an aggregate net asset value exceeding US$2 billion. To be clear, these are actions that we are taking by choice. We will proceed only if there is value for Sasol and we will not sell assets at sub-optimal prices. By taking these carefully considered actions, it will support reducing our debt, while optimising our asset portfolio. With this context in mind, since 2017 Sasol has completed several reviews resulting in a number of assets from South Africa and around the world identified for potential divestment. These reviews have resulted in Sasol successfully concluding a number of divestments, totalling over US$200 million, which include our assets in: - Malaysia (chemicals joint venture); - Heat transfer fluids in Germany; and - Lake Desmet in USA (coal reserve). On Monday, 22 July we announced
Aart Reedijk lost his fight On Sunday afternoon just after 15H00 Aart Reedijk lost his fight against the illness that has been plaguing him for the past year. Aart has been a pillar for The Bulletin. He was one of the founding members and enjoyed the newspaper tremendously. He excelled in writing articles and was a keen photographer. After a brief period away from The Bulletin, Encee van Huyssteen, the editor, asked Aart to help with proofreading. He was also tasked with writing stories on a weekly basis. Aart would be remembered as a man
that we had selected Enaex S.A., a subsidiary of the Sigdo Koppers Group, as Sasol Explosives’ preferred partner to engage with for the possible formation of a joint venture that would potentially see Enaex S.A. take full operational control of Sasol Explosives. As this is an early engagement, no final decision has been taken and further communication will be provided at the appropriate time. On Friday, 26 July Sasol and Huntsman Corporation signed a definitive agreement for Sasol to dispose of our 50% equity interest in the Sasol-Huntsman maleic anhydride joint venture. Our asset review process is extensive and extends across a number of assets in the entire portfolio. The review process is underway but has not been concluded. The outcome of this feasibility process will determine the viability of a divestment, if at all, for a final decision to be made at the appropriate time. We do not wish to comment at this stage on which assets have been earmarked for divestment, since they form a part of a disciplined and confidential M&A process. Sasol will update the market as and when appropriate regarding progress on the asset review process.” Sasol has been under pressure lately with less than favourable results with the Lake Charles project where the costs have spiralled to nearly out of control. His family and The Bulletin would like to thank Shayne from Langamed and the personnel from Mavcorp for their support in transporting Aart to hospital on Saturday night. its board asked for additional time to investigate cost changes at its Lake Charles Chemicals Project in the US. The SA-headquartered petrochemical group was set to release its earnings report on August 19. This was then delayed until September 19 for the probe to start. In an update to shareholders on Friday, Sasol said it now hopes to release the results by no later than October 31 after its board agreed to “commission additional work”. The group’s shares fell 3.5% by 10:45 on the JSE.” Bloomberg reported on 30 August that: “Sasol has been asked by some of the country’s biggest fund managers to consider executive changes including ousting Stephen Cornell, one of two chief executive officers, over cost overruns at a flagship project, according to people familiar with the matter. Sasol is under pressure to curb air pollution. “South Africa’s air is absolutely filthy,” said Melita Steele, a senior climate and energy campaign manager at Greenpeace Africa. “We simply cannot afford to waste any more time by delaying industry compliance with air-quality legislation or the transition to renewable energy.” Sasol has, however, repeatedly committed themselves to the safety of its workers as well as to the environment. Sasol recently embarked on a program to replace coal fired stoves with gas. The coal fired stoves are one of the major polluters in the area. - Encee van Huyssteen

A 39-year-old man, Samuel Malele, appeared at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on 17 September for murder. It is alleged that on Monday morning, 16 September, the suspect called the victim, his grandmother, into the house at which they were both occupants. Moments later the victim’s son, his uncle, heard strange noises coming from the house and rushed in to investigate. Upon arrival, he (victim’s son) allegedly found the suspect hacking the victim with a shovel and threatened to kill him if he intervened. The son went out calling for assistance and upon returning found her lifeless body outside the house. The police were alerted and they swiftly arrested the suspect at the scene. It was reported that the suspect murdered the victim after accusing her of practicing witchcraft against him. During his court appearance, the suspect was remanded in custody and was expected to reappear at the same court on Friday, 20 September, for a formal bail application. Murder suspect sought Police in Mpumalanga are looking for a suspect who murdered a 32-yearold woman at Moloto Block 4, KwaMhlanga. It was reported that the woman was last seen by her family members on Sunday, 15 September. The following day, Monday morning, the family became suspicious when she still did not show up as she was supposed to prepare her two daughters for school. It is alleged that the children had asked the whereabouts of their mother from the boyfriend who was last seen with her and he alleged that she went to the clinic. He left while the search was being conducted around the area. As the search progressed, information revealed that her younger brother went inside her bedroom after the boyfriend had left and searched everywhere. He reportedly opened a steel case used by her boyfriend as a toolbox where he made a gruesome discovery of his sister stuffed inside the case, half naked with bruises all over. The motive behind the killing is still unknown at this stage and a case of murder has been opened for investigation. The police are currently requesting Thabiso Goliath Masehla to come forward, whom it is believed may assist in the investigation. Anyone with information on Masehla’s whereabouts is urged to contact Lieutenant Colonel Sunnyboy Modisha at 082 470 3329 or 082 923 1974/082 922 9831, alternatively, the SAPS Crime Stop Number 08600 10111 may be called. Man arrested for possession and storage of unlicensed firearms and ammunition A 43-year-old man has been arrested at a farm in the outskirts of Nelspruit for the possession of a plethora of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as the storage thereof. The suspect’s arrest came after police received information about an assortment of firearms, totalling 121, as well as ammunition at his place of residence on the farm in Uitkyk. When police arrived a t the identified place, they discovered a big container that was used to store the firearms. The suspect will appear at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, facing the above-mentioned charges. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga,
Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, praised the cooperation between the police and the community that led to the discovery of these firearms and ammunition. Woman appeared for assault of 13-year-old child A 35-year-old woman, Matshidiso Mtsweni, who allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old boy, was arrested and appeared at the Ogies Magistrate’s Court on 18 September. The arrest came as a result of a video clip circulating on social media and went viral. In the video, a woman is clearly seen assaulting the victim at Phola, near Ogies, on Sunday, 15 September. Information at police disposal suggested that the woman’s anger may have been caused by the victim having had a quarrel with her child. The woman reportedly tied the victim’s hands and legs with a rope against a pole at the veranda of a shack in her yard. She assaulted him using a wooden stick and thereafter, called her child as well as six other children aged between 10 and 15, who were playing soccer nearby to come and join in the assault until the victim broke his right hand. On Tuesday, 17 September, the suspect was handed over to the police by a group of women belonging to a community movement structure in the area who apparently conducted a civilian’s arrest. During the appearance in court, Mtsweni was granted R500 bail with the matter postponed to 8 October pending further investigation. She’s facing a charge of assault with an intention to cause serious bodily harm. The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has applauded the women for working with the police in the fight against crime and not taking the law into their own hands. Four life terms for mother who killed her four children On 20 September the Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Middelburg sentenced Zinhle Leshmee Maditla to four terms of life imprisonment for the murder of her four biological children - two girls, aged four and eight and two boys, aged seven years and eleven months in the Klarinet area in Witbank. In her plea statement Maditla told the court that in December 2018, she poisoned herself and her children with rat poison in an attempt to commit suicide. She further laced her breast to breastfeed the eleven-month-old baby after she discovered that the father of two of her children was cheating on her. Maditla handed herself to the police after the decomposed bodies of her children were found by the neighbours and relatives. In aggravation of the sentence, Senior State Advocate, Ntsika Mpolweni, presented to court that Maditla had time to think about her actions. Instead she did nothing to seek help after the victims showed complications. Mpolweni said that those complications were an indication that Maditla intended to kill them and therefore a prescribed minimum sentence must be imposed. The presiding officer, Judge Sheila Mphahlele, remarked that the accused had been convicted of serious offences and found no reason for the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence. She said that the victims were killed by their own mother who had to nurture, care, protect and provide for them.
27 September 2019 She went on to say that the innocent children were victims of her battles with their father. “They trusted her like any child could have trusted the mother. When they were hungry, they believed she would provide for them. She intentionally gave them food that was contaminated with the intention to kill them,” said Judge Mphahlele. She sentenced Maditla to life imprisonment on each count of murder. The NPA is satisfied with the sentence imposed hoping that it will serve as a deterrent to those who are planning to commit similar crimes. Man, who allegedly stashed body of a woman in steel case, arrested Police in Mpumalanga made an appeal to the community to assist them in looking for a suspect who murdered a 32-year-old woman at Moloto Block 4, KwaMhlanga and fled the scene. However, the suspect’s freedom was short lived. The police were informed that the woman was last seen by her family members on Sunday, 15 September. The following day the family became suspicious when she still did not show up as she was supposed to prepare her two daughters for school. He reportedly opened a steel case used by her boyfriend as a toolbox where he made a gruesome discovery of his sister’s body stuffed inside the case, half naked with bruises all over. The motive behind the killing is still unknown at this stage and a case of murder was opened for investigation. The police made an appeal to the community to assist them with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect. There was a team which was put in place by the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, in line with the 72 Hour Activation Plan to probe this matter. General Zuma is pleased to announce that the suspect has been sniffed out from his hiding place at GaMasemola in an area called Makhutsho in Limpopo. The 32-year-old suspect was found at his homestead and was arrested. At this stage, the police are still busy with further investigations on this matter as it also surfaced that after the murder, he allegedly committed a house robbery to get money to flee the area. Further investigations have also uncovered that there are also other cases ranging from murder and rape that he allegedly committed in Limpopo. General Zuma also extended his warm words of appreciation to the community for working in collaboration with the police that led to the suspect being brought to book. “Working very closely with the community and the police is the way to go in the fight against crime,” said General Zuma. He also congratulated the astute team for working selflessly making sure that the villain was brought to book. The suspect is expected to appear before the Kwamhlanga Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 September, facing murder as well as house robbery. However, he is also expected to be transited to Limpopo to face his atrocious acts he allegedly committed there.

We have asked that the boxes be closed but to no avail. What will happen if someone touches the open buzzbars etc inside the box?” “Who will take responsibilty if someone dies or loses a limb, just because the open boxes are not taken seriously,” he continued.

Ds Marius Britz Uitgestrekte wit strande is lekker, ja. Die hemelsblou see is ‘n belewenis, ja. Of eenvoudig te gaan brandstof ingooi by Mouton Motors. “Hie is lekke samoesas vemore? Spesiaal
Ek vyl al lankal my tanne vi hom!” Is true my broe!” Ek loop daarna deur my huis, peinsend oor hierdie erfenis-
ding. Ek sien soveel dinge wat wys wie ek is, waar ek vandaan kom. My erfenis. Ons erfenis. Myne en almal daar by die kliniek en by Shoprite. Ouma se gehekelde doilies (in my man-cave weggesteek.)

Celebrating Heritage Day History of Heritage Day before 1995 In KwaZulu-Natal, 24 September was known as Shaka Day, in commemoration of the Zulu King, Shaka, on the presumed date of his death in 1828. Shaka was the Zulu King who played an important role in uniting disparate Zulu clans into a cohesive nation. Each year people gather at King Shaka’s grave to honour him on this day. The Public Holidays Bill presented to the new democratic Parliament of South Africa in 1995 did not have 24 September included on the list of proposed public holidays. As a result of this exclusion, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), a South African political party with a large Zulu membership, objected to the bill. Parliament and the ANC reached a compromise and the day was given its present title and seen as a public holiday. “...when South Africans celebrate the diverse cultural heritage that makes up a “rainbow nation”. It is the day to celebrate the contribution of all South Africans to the building of South Africa” — Lowry 21:1995 South Africans celebrate Heritage Day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. Various events are staged throughout the
country to commemorate this. Former Western Cape Provincial Premier, Ebrahim Rasool, addressed the public at a Heritage Day celebration at the Gugulethu Heritage trail in 2007 in Gugulethu. In Hout Bay, there is an army procession and a recreation of the battle fought there. In 2005, a media campaign sought to “re-brand” the holiday as National Braai Day, in recognition of the South African culinary tradition of holding informal backyard barbecues, or braais. On 5 September 2007, Archbishop Desmond Tutu celebrated his appointment as patron of South Africa’s Braai Day, affirming it to be a unifying force in a divided country (by donning an apron and tucking into a boerewors sausage). At the end of 2007 National Braai Day changed its name to Braai4Heritage and the initiative received the endorsement of South Africa’s National Heritage Council (NHC).[citation needed] Organiser Jan Scannell (known as “Jan Braai”) announced that the aim is not to have a mass braai, but with little ones, friends and family. Some have commented that this is a ploy to make people forget the history and the original meaning of why the day was created. - Wikipedia

Soar Girl Child partook in World Clean-up Day
According to the basic human rights laws of South Africa, everyone has a right to live in a conducive environment. World Clean-up Day was celebrated on 21 September and this year Soar Girl Child joined the Sasol for Good Initiative Campaign as volunteers clean up their community. Soar Girl Child released the following statement: “This initiative has an impact in raising awareness around
issues of waste in the community of eMbalenhle and Govan Mbeki Municipality as a whole. We as Soar Girl Child pride ourselves at looking after our environment and taking care of our people. It was only a pleasure to take the lead in cleaning up the environment we live in. We would like to thank Sasol for sponsoring us with clean-up equipment. The equipment made our lives easier. We thank the
volunteers who came through to help us clean up our selected areas in eMbalenhle. This day wouldn’t be possible without you all!” According to Govan Mbeki Municipality bylaws, it is an offense to litter or dump waste anywhere. Littering anywhere destroys and blocks the drains which makes it difficult for water to flow during the rainfall season. Speaking to community members
passing by when Soar Girl Child members were busy doing their tasks, people said it was a good initiative but it would not help because the municipality doesn’t supply them with refuse bags and the municipality does not collect waste either. We would like to applaud the young women who took their precious time and made difference in the community. - Sandile Mkhwanazi
Everyone unites fighting gender-based violence
It has been a big topic on all social media platforms across South Africa, even President Ramaphosa called off the summit that was supposed to have taken place in order to give much needed attention to the ongoing shameless behaviour by men. The president said he will speak to the Judiciary and Constitutional courts of South Africa to amend the law to be firmer when it comes to cases of rape and murder. A review committee has been formed to help making sure that rape cases are treated with high priority.
On Thursday, 19 September, Miss Teen Unity South Africa 2019, Miss Hope Maseko, Miss Valentine 1st princess 2019, Miss Zanele Ngwenya and Mister Hulk 1st prince 2018, Mr Karabo Khoza, celebrated their Heritage Day early at Kinross Primary School and had a talk with the students about gender-based violence, depression and rape with help from Miss Nkwekazi the Deputy principal of Kinross Primary. Hope Maseko’s message of the day was: “Gender-based violence is a profound and widespread problem in South Africa, hence it does affect both males and females but the majority are females. I hope individuals think it is a good start to talk to the students about being victims or past experience with gender-based violence. It might be easier for them to talk to us than their parents and/or teachers.” With over 25 cases of rape and murder reported in Mpumalanga province a day, half of the cases include children especially children who are still in school. It begins with one helping another, because some people or children need someone they can talk to only. - Sandile Mkhwanazi Isaiah 58:11 11 The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sunscorched land and will strengthen your frame.
Facebook Post Errata: We would like to rectify our initial post; it wasn’t thought through well enough. In 2008 when we added one thousand Bass, to increase the recreational value (with tilapia as diet), to our dam, the water was still murky, which prevented the sunrays from penetrating the water. A year later, in 2009, we noticed the water becoming clearer. By 2011, when we planned a Jet ski show, we noticed the watergrass and by the time the show was due, we had to move the event to Unicor Dam as the grass took over the entire dam. Since then it got progressively worse. Of course, we are well aware that the inflow of sewerage upstream is feeding the grass and algae, but it is out of our control. We do plan to mechanically clean the dam
shortly. The idea is also to reduce the large number of small bass (between 200 & 300 mm long) and allow Bass over 300 mm to grow even larger for future fun of the Bass enthusiast. We also plan to introduce new Carp, under permit from Mpumalanga Fisheries, to control the new algae growth. We hope that in the future, Lake Umuzi will not only be known for the giant Carp but also to be a fun place for the Bass enthusiasts. It is important to note that the bass reduction programme is only for the Lake Umuzi (upper) Dam and
not for Kamp Oase (lower) Dam, as it is reserved for campers only. Permits, at No Charge, may be obtained during office hours (Mon to Fri, 8h00 to 16h00) from Roos & Rosslee’s office at Lake Umuzi South Bank. No one will be allowed to fish without the relevant, valid permits. This is simply a measure to control access and fishermen’s behaviour on our premises. We hope that this will go a long way in clearing the matter. Any interested person is very welcome to visit our office during office hours to discuss any related issues. - Johan Rosslee

Lake Umuzi Soccer Challenge 2019 Over the past year, U/12 teams from Govan Mbeki and surrounding towns competed against each other until the top eight local teams were selected. On 7 September, the top eight local U/12 soccer teams competed against eight U/13 teams from Gauteng on the sport grounds of Wits University. In the final, Kagiso Sport School Academy, from Kempton Park, just managed to beat the local team, Home Boys from Embalenhle. On Saturday, 14 September, AquaZone Waterpark was host to the annual Lake Umuzi Soccer Challenge Prize Giving and Fun Day. All sixteen teams comprising of approximately 320 young boys and the officials, who played at Wits, were invited The day was opened by the Mdaba Cultural Dance Group from Leandra, who entertained the players with their African Dance routines. In his welcoming address, Lake Umuzi director, Johan Rosslee thanked Mr Jacob Mtkwende for his relentless work in organising the Lake Umuzi Soccer Challenge and for managing it to expand into Gauteng. He also thanked Wits University for providing the facilities for the finals. The vision of the Lake Umuzi Soccer Challenge is to keep youngsters occupied with playing sport rather than to get involved in the wrong things. By bringing everyone to the AquaZone Fun Day, was for the kids to see a better future if they make use of their opportunities by working hard at school and training hard in soccer. Both Wits Junior Soccer Head Coach, Mr Rainer Abraham and assistant coach, Mr Henry Brownlee, talked about the high level of skills from our local teams. They are always on the lookout, not only for soccer talent from the outlying areas, but also for kids who perform well academically to be provided with free university education
through sport bursaries. They gave many examples of kids who come from underprivileged backgrounds who went through their system to become better adults. They also stressed the importance of honesty in small things, like declaring the right age when competing, as cheating at small things leads to bad habits in adult life. Mr Nathi Zwane, from Kathorus Football Club, thanked Lake Umuzi for allowing the children to come to AquaZone fun day and also Boesies Restaurant for providing everyone with food and drinks for the day. After the kids enjoyed lunch, they had the rest of the day to enjoy the slides and pools. It was a day for the kids to remember for the rest of their lives.
No time for a lucky shot, WPA 10 Ball Nomination is the key to this precise cue sport discipline. Most of the same rules apply as in nine-ball. This means that in order to establish a legal hit, the cue ball must contact the lowest numbered ball first and subsequently at least one ball must hit any rail or be pocketed without the cue ball being pocketed. In 10-ball, shots have to be called, which means that the player must call a ball and the pocket in which to make the ball, usually by pointing to a pocket with his finger or cue and stating the number of the ball he intends to make in that pocket (not necessarily the lowestnumbered ball on the table, e.g. if a combination or carom shot is being attempted).
If the 10-ball is pocketed on the break, it will be spotted and the player will continue his inning (previously a 10ball made on the break resulted in a win). Under WPA World Standardised Rules, it is a call-shot game, in which flukes or shots that go in an unintended pocket (usually by simple random chance) do not count; that is, unlike in nine-ball, the ball to be pocketed and the pocket must be specified. If a player pockets only the wrong ball or pockets the nominated ball in the wrong pocket, the ball stays down. The opponent then has the choice of taking the shot or handing it back At Panda’s Cue Sport we play all 3 WPA American style cue sports. Usually we play this respective discipline on a 9 ft
table, although in the Americans play on a standard 7 ft table with a WPA 8/9/10 Ball cut cushion. WPA 8/9/10 are played with heavier balls. The US 10-Ball Championships is the largest 10 Ball event in the world and players from all over the world visit Texas for these Championships. South Africa recently sent two players to participate in the US 10-Ball Championships, Jason Theron and David Anderson. David is the current South African 9-Ball Champion. You can see him defending his title 11 - 13 October at the KWV SA 9-Ball Championships at Panda’s Cue Sport, Lake Umuzi, Secunda. 10 Ball leagues would start take place in March 2020 over 3 Sunday’s.
