Rape victims now help others Sibonelo Ngubane and Sylvia Mbanjwa with the children who lives at the Velile Victim Empowerment Centre full time.

Velile Victim Empowerment Centre in eMbalenhle is the brainchild of a rape survivor, Sylvia Mbanjwa (41). This courageous woman opened the centre in 2010 to empower other vulnerable women and children. Presently there are 22 vulnerable and abused children and seven women living at this centre. Sylvia bears her own emotional scars from years abuse. She said there was something wrong mentally with both her parents and her father left them when she was only two years old. Sylvia was a mere nine years old when she was first raped. The culprit was a trusted family member who continued to abuse her throughout her school years. As a young woman, she was violently raped by another man in KwaZuluNatal. When she found out she was pregnant, she made the tough decision to keep the child. She came to live with family in eMbalenhle and supported herself and her infant daughter by selling spices and clothes. Her daughter is now 21 years old with a child of her own. Her own ordeal prompted Sylvia to

open a place of safety for vulnerable and abused women and children. “As a victim, I saw many parents in eMbalenhle who abandoned their children when they go to the taverns,” said Sylvia. The Velile Victim Empowerment Centre is dependent on sponsors and donations. Sylvia thanked all her supporters for their regular donations. Another woman who made the Velile Victim Empowerment Centre her permanent home, is Sibonelo Ngubane (25). She was raped by her own brother, the infamous eMbalenhle serial rapist, Sipho Nkosi. Nkosi was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year on several counts of rape. Sibonelo fell pregnant because of the rape. She is raising the child on her own, as well as another child who was also conceived through an act of rape. “God is our helper. We pray with the children each night,” said Sibonelo. The women living at the centre are responsible for all the children’s needs, including food and laundry. If you want to support the centre, contact Sylvia at 076 797 9142.

Willie’s health deteriorates The Bulletin reported about Willie Brink who was left in his hospital room in Evander Hospital with a pile of paper towels covered in faeces on the floor. According to Deon Coetzee, Willie’s friend, he was neglected. A case of assault was opened against Deon after he complained to the nurses and security guards about the condition of the room. Willie was transferred to Witbank Hospital and is connected to a ventilator. “I do not understand how his condition worsened like this, he was admitted to hospital with a broken

leg” said Deon. According to Deon Willie has no life function anymore. He and his wife, Shirley were not able to speak to doctors at Witbank Hospital because the doctors are only available between 10:00 and 11:00 and Deon and Shirley can only visit during the evenings because they work during the day. In the meantime Deon was summonsed to appear in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on 1 August in connection with the assault case. According to Evander Police Deon assaulted one of the nurses, but Deon denies it.

Fire fighters pelted with stones Residents pelted firefighters with stones while the rescue workers were responding to a fire in Extension 22 in eMbalenhle on Tuesday, 20 July. The fire engine was damaged. Govan Mbeki Municipality is concerned about the rising number of attacks on firefighters when they respond to scenes. “The extent of the fire could not be ascertained because the members had to leave the scene after being stoned,” said Bheki Kubheka, acting head of marketing and communications at Govan Mbeki Municipality. According to him, there have been several similar incidents. “We urge residents to refrain from attacking firefighters as they are placing lives and property at risk,” said Bheki.

Bank employee sentenced Tankiso Gerald Radebe (28), a former Standard Bank employee was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for fraud. Radebe worked in Evander and transferred money from a client’s account to a fraudulent account in August last year. A few days after the transfer, R40 000 was transferred into Radebe’s account and a case was opened at the Mpumalanga DPCI (Hawks). During the investigation, the Hawks

discovered that R70 000 was also involved in this case. “There is no court which can sentence an accused without evidence, this was demonstrated when W/O Sipho Patrick Nyathikazi pursued the case,” said the Mpumalanga DPCI provincial head, Maj.-Gen. Mokoena, Mpumalanga DPCI Provincial Head. He further treasured the judiciary for their constant resolve by eliminating offenders from the community to the place where they will learn a lesson.

Cop killers sentenced Sydney Mashaba (44), Frans Nathibela (45) and Khayelile Welcome Ngubane (38) have been sentenced in the Evander Regional Court to life imprisonment on 12 July. The three men were found guilty for murdering a police officer on 18 February this year. Const Phumlani Nxumalo (44) was off duty on the day of the murder and parked his vehicle alongside the road at Kinross, Afghanistan. The three men approached him and ordered him to get out of the vehicle. Const Nxumalo tried to defend himself and was hit over the head with a firearm. He fell down and the trio sped off with his vehicle which was later found abandoned at Duba Park next to a tavern. Const Nxumalo tried to get up and run

to get help, but he succumbed and died of his injuries a few meters from the scene. The trio hijacked a woman on 19 February, took her to the bushes, undressed her and left her there naked before fleeing with her vehicle. They then went to Middelburg where they committed robbery. They were arrested on 20 February and investigations positively linked them with all three cases. They were found guilty on 10 other charges including hijacking, the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, the theft of a motor vehicle and robbery. Two of the accused were sentenced for an extra 20 years for the other charges against them and one of them was sentenced to an extra 18 years’ imprisonment

As jy die AfriForum Secunda-tak wil ondersteun, raak by dié inisiatief betrokke. Vir meer inligting, skakel 081 217 3155.

Michelle vier perfekte verjaardag

“My grootste verwagtinge vir dié dag is oortref.”

Michelle Fick spandeer haar 40ste verjaarsdag Saterdag by die Kosmos Kriel Kinderhuis.

Jacob thanked Jabu Nekel who sponsored the books and said if there is anyone who wants to sponsor any books, they can contact him. “They must not just play soccer, they must learn other things as well,” said Jacob. All children taking part in sports between the ages of 10 and 15 are welcome to attend Jacob’s life skills programme. For more information, contact Jacob at 082 705 1247.
